Dear Parents, Carers and Students, READING CHALLENGE Once again, we will be running a holiday reading challenge. Keep an eye out for the forms which will be going home today. It would be fantastic to have even more participants during these holidays! Parents, please encourage your child to join in the challenge as a way to create the habit of reading daily. CANTEEN MENU A slightly revised canteen menu will be going home on the first day of next term. We are adding a new special on Thursdays which will be a child-friendly grazing platter with a variety of healthy and delicious options. Please give it a go! One important change to the canteen is that, due to food health and safety regulations, we will no longer be reheating food brought in from home. This is to ensure we are meeting the relevant legislation for food safety and to ensure the wellness of our students. Please support our school canteen, as it provides a valuable service to our school community and we would like to keep it sustainable into the future. MOORA SHOW I was very excited to attend my very first Moora Show and it did not disappoint! It was a joy to see all of the fabulous arts and crafts that our students entered and I spotted many winning entries from our school. The banners from each class on display were also amazing! Our staff and students did us proud and I thank them for their efforts in ensuring our school was represented well. WALK LIKE A PIRATE LAPATHON Another first for me was the Walk Like a Pirate Lapathon day on Monday. There was a fabulous spirit around the school on the day with many ‘aarghs’ and ‘ahoys’ being heard throughout! Thank you to parents and community members who agreed to sponsor our students to help the P & F raise funds for our school. LEARNING JOURNEYS We had a great turn out to the Learning Journeys last Thursday and I heard that the children and their parents and carers enjoyed it very much. It was a great opportunity for students to show off some of their learning and for parents to get a peek inside their classrooms. Thank you to all the parents who attended and also to the teachers for the preparation they did for the afternoon. Learning Journeys are just one of the ways we communicate with families about the progress of their child, so it was great to see there was such a good turnout. 2017 Edition No 16 - Wednesday, 20 th September 2017 St John the Baptist Parish Moora Weekend Masses: 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd & 5 th Saturday 6.30pm 4 th Sunday 10.30am Mass this weekend – Sunday 1030am Weekday Masses: Wednesday - 5.30pm & Friday - 8am Upcoming Dates September 2017 Fri, 22 Sep: Last Day of Term October 2017 Mon, 9 Oct: Pupil Free Day Tues, 10 Oct: Students Resume Thurs, 12 Oct: K-2 Excursion to MPAC Reading Challenge Due Back Fri, 20 Oct: Cricket Clinic Yr 3-6 Sat, 21 Oct: School Fete Fri, 27 Oct: Yr 3 Assembly 2.30pm World Teachers’ Day Tues, 31 Oct: Cybersafety Day November 2017 Wed, 1 Nov: All Saints Day Mass 9am Thurs, 2 Nov: Music Count Us In Incursion 9.20am Fri, 3 Nov: Kindy Assembly 2.30pm Fri, 10 Nov: Remembrance Day Liturgy P & F Disco 5.30-7.30pm Tues, 14 Nov: Book Swap Fri, 17 Nov: PP Assembly 2.30pm Local Music Recital MPAC 7pm

INTERSCHOOL ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Last Friday, Katie Monaghan and Emma Trevaskis did a splendid job of organising our Interschool Athletics Carnival. Our team did us proud and we ended up with many children winning ribbons and medals on the day. Special mention to:

A big thank you to the parents who volunteered to help at the carnival and all those who came to support the students. St Joseph’s finished Runner-Up in the Primary section with Wongan Hills on 708 pts, St Joseph’s on 643 pts, Moora Primary School on 521 pts and Dalwallinu on 518 pts. SNAICC Conference Catholic Education recently invited Ms Dawson, Ms Drayton, Mrs Machin and me to attend the SNAICC Conference in Canberra. This was a 3-day event, held last week, focusing on early childhood education and care for children of indigenous descent. It was a valuable learning experience for us all and the overall theme was centred on the importance of cultural practices for these children in the context of their school and community. I have come back with a number of ideas that our school will look at implementing. Assistant Principal 2018 As you know, Mrs Jackie Riches has been acting in the role of Assistant Principal for most of this year and has been doing a fabulous job. Jackie will be stepping back into a classroom teaching role at the end of the year and we have appointed a new Assistant Principal. Mr Jae Dornan will be joining our staff from the beginning of 2018. Jae is currently a teacher at All Saints' College Junior School in Perth and has previously taught at Scotch College and Yidarra Catholic Primary School, as well as having some overseas experience in Japan and Canada. Jae and his family are planning to visit Moora to attend the school fete, so you may get to meet him then! PARENT FEEDBACK SURVEY Just a reminder that we are currently running a parent feedback survey so that you can tell us what you think about our school. I encourage all parents and carers to have their say as this information will be used when we are discussing plans for school improvement. You can access the survey here: http://bit.ly/2vqbIfX or by scanning the QR code on this page. CODE OF CONDUCT Our School’s Code of Conduct can be found on the school website http://www.sjsmoora.wa.edu.au/code-of-conduct. This is a set of minimum requirements that apply to all staff, parents and visitors to our school and outlines the most appropriate behavioural guidelines to ensure the well-being and safety of our students. Conduct Statement 1 states that “you act safely and competently”. The whole school community has responsibility for student safety. While we have a range of policies and procedures in place to minimise risk to students and the teachers have duty of care for children while they are in their charge, we also encourage parents and other community members to let us know about anything they are concerned about. For example, if you see students riding their bikes home from school without helmets, or in a dangerous manner, please let us know as it might be an indication we need to re-address road safety with our students.

God bless

Lisa Gallin

What’s Happening in the Senior Room? Escape the Classroom - this is an interactive escape game, requiring

the students to locate and decipher a series of clues and puzzles to escape the area. The senior students will be told they need to escape on time if they wish to enjoy their holiday break! This term all our study and research was based on investigation and criminology so we have created an Escape Room challenge for the students to enjoy. With their groups, your child must use their senses and team work in order to solve and decipher lingual, visual, mathematical, spatial, physical and lateral puzzles. Each activity relates to the lessons we have covered in Term 3. It should be a fun way to practise the skills they have been taught and need to succeed in the real world. What a terrific term! Even though I was on leave for some of the time, I was in touch with the teachers involved on a daily basis. I cannot believe the children completed the huge range of writing and learning we put in place. Both Tarlee and I are extremely proud of what they have accomplished. They have excelled in many ways. It is a delight to see the interest and the enthusiasm your child has developed towards their learning. It has had such a positive effect on us we are already busy planning for Term 4. A big thank you for your support and I hope you have a wonderful break and make time to have some family fun. See you in two weeks.

Mrs Robyn Watson
