Games4Health Background

Games4Health is a student game design competition hosted by the University of Utah’s Sorenson

Center for Discovery & Innovation. This competition challenges students and their teams to design

a game or an app that promotes health. There are a number of ways that games and apps can

positively impact the way we care for ourselves and each other; we encourage you to explore the

many technologies available today and create new solutions that engage people and help them live

happier, healthier lives.

$60,000 in prize money is available in the Games4Health 2017 competition. There are five challenge

categories, each with prizes for first, second and third place of $5,000, $3,000, and $1,000 respectively.

We are also introducing our new category this year: the Virtual/Augmented Reality Challenge.

Anyone who creates a VR/AR game will automatically be entered in the VR/AR challenge in addition

to the challenge in which they have selected to enter. The prize allocations for the best VR/AR game

are $5,000, $3,000, and $1,000 for first, second, and third place. There will also be a $1,000 prize each

for “Best Of” and “Most Popular” categories. The judges will determine the overall best teaser video

and the overall best commercialization video, each worth $1,000. We will also have arcade voting for

the favorite game displayed at the arcade event on March 30, 2017. The community will vote for the

people’s choice award by voting for their favorite Games4Health competition game on Facebook.

Both of these awards are worth $1,000.

Games4Health gives students an opportunity to experience innovation and entrepreneurship while

making a difference in people’s lives. We encourage you to participate in the competition regardless

of your academic background. We have designed the competition so that any innovative student

can compete.

Eligibility

Each participating team is required to have at least one currently enrolled student. This student

must perform a primary role in the game or app design and business model development. Other

team members can come from any background or level of expertise (there are no restrictions). We

encourage teams to have members representing many disciplines: marketing, software development,

liberal arts, medicine, and others.

This is a global competition where you do not need to be local to compete. We invite all students

from university, college, high school (or equivalent) across the globe to participate. In past years,

students from over 12 different countries have participated. This is an exciting opportunity to be a

part of a global effort to improve health.

The Competition Process

1. Registration

Registration closes February 10, 2017 (11:59pm MST)

Registration for the Games4Health 2017 Challenge is open between October 19th, 2017 and February

10th, 2017. Each individual participant on a team must register on the Games4Health website in order

to receive prize money (http://g4hutah.com/participant-register).

Each team member must register with the same team name. It is important to use the same team

name because prize money will be disbursed to each registered person on the team.

Games4Health will not disburse prize money to team members who are not registered.

2. Select a challenge and design a game

There are five challenges in the 2017 Games4Health Challenge. Each challenge deals with a different

aspect of health and healthcare, including corporate wellness, adolescent social and emotional

health, general fitness, clinical healthcare, and chronic diseases. Your team must select one challenge

and design a game or an app that fits within the challenge category. You may submit more than one

entry, but each entry can be used only one time. The challenges are described in detail below, in this

packet.

There are no limits to platforms, type of game, interfaces, or gaming mechanics. Be creative,

innovative, and use anything you can to drive healthy living through a game or app. Keep in mind

that your game should be developed to satisfy the judging criteria. These criteria are provided in the

appendices of this packet.

3. Submit two videos

Submissions are due March 8, 2017 (11:59pm MST)

Only two videos are required for submission. We do not require any documents, presentations, or

even a copy of your game. The two videos required are a Teaser Video and a Commercialization

Video. Submissions are due by March 8th, 2017.

Teaser Video – 90 seconds

The Teaser Video allows you to showcase your game in a creative way that captures your audience’s

attention and engages them on an emotional level. A great Teaser Video will motivate the audience

to want to immediately download your game or app. This video is open-ended and can be in any

form that best presents your game, its purpose, capabilities, and potential. The team must decide

what you feel is the best way to engage your audience and the judges. The video must be 90 seconds

in length or less. If your video exceeds this 90 second limit, judges will severely penalize your

submission.

Your Teaser Video could be:

A commercial for your game

A dynamic infographic showing us how your game works

A demo of someone playing the game

A live skit of the game mechanics

A cartoon animation describing your game and its value

Any other form your team feels that showcases your game or app

Commercialization Video - 3 minutes

The Commercialization Video is your chance to tell us how you will implement your game or app. A

successful Commercialization Video will convince the judges that your game or app will be a

successful business opportunity. This video needs to address the following issues:

Provide screen shots, story board and wireframe to provide the look and feel of your game

or app

Provide a description of the revenue and business model to answer the question of where,

and how you will make money

Provide a description of the health efficacy of your game or app and how you would test it in

a rigorous manner to provide evidence of its efficacy

Provide a description of the behavior change science embedded in your game or app in order

to explain how you would get user adoption and how you would change their behavior to

improve health

Keep it professional. Do not use inappropriate sounds, language, or images. Videos containing

content deemed inappropriate by Games4Health staff will be disqualified. Additionally, do not go

over the specified time limits. If your video exceeds this 3 minute limit, judges will severely

penalize your submission.

4. Complete W9 form

Every winning team within the United States will be sent a request for a W9. This is necessary to pay

taxes on the prize money, required by law. Each registered team member must provide a complete

W9 in order to receive any cash prizes. Participants who reside outside of the U.S. and are not U.S.

citizens, must submit a completed W8BEN. Please note that all prize money is subject to taxes as

required by law.

5. Attend the Arcade and Awards Gala

Every team that submits the two required videos is invited to showcase their game at the Arcade on

March 30th, 2017. The Arcade is an exhibit style event where teams will be given a table to setup and

show off their game. Those who cannot make it in person may Skype in and will be given a booth

with a tablet to communicate with the student audience. We invite several surrounding organizations

and schools to attend the Arcade to come and experience your games. We also invite judges,

corporate sponsors, and potential investors to attend. Come prepared to show off your creative

genius.

There will also be an Arcade specific competitions held during the Arcade. Only teams that participate

in the Arcade are eligible for the Arcade Favorite award. We encourage every team that can attend,

either in person or remotely, to showcase your game at the arcade.

Following the submission deadline, each competing team will be sent an Arcade invitation and form

in which to RSVP for Arcade attendance and participation. Teams that do not RSVP by the deadline

will not be allowed to participate in the arcade and will not be eligible to receive the Arcade Favorite

award.

Games4Health Awards Gala March 30, 2017

All teams that submit to Games4Health are invited to attend the Games4Health Awards Gala. The

Awards Gala is a celebration of the efforts of all participants, and free to attend. Contestants,

sponsors, judges, and competition organizers will come together for dinner, highlighted by a guest

keynote speaker. At the conclusion of the event, we will announce the winners of each challenge.

Because this is a global event, many teams will not be able to travel to attend the Arcade and Gala.

These are not required events. All submissions will be considered for the main challenge prizes,

regardless of attendance at the Arcade and Gala.

The Challenges

There are five challenge categories as well as the Samsung Grand Prize and the best VR/AR game.

Each game or app submitted for competition must address one of these five challenges. A single

game or app will not be considered for multiple challenges. All entries in all categories may be

considered for the Samsung Grand Prize worth $10,000. In addition to these 5 challenges, if your

game contains VR/AR technology it will be automatically entered into another category (Best VR/AR

game) in addition to the category that you have chosen to compete in. View all of the challenge

SAMSUNG S Health

Grand Prize $10,000

Samsung S Health is a globally pre-loaded application on Samsung smartphones that provides core

features to keep your body fit and healthy. It will record and analyze your daily activities and habits

to help maintain a successful diet and lead a healthy lifestyle. You can add and track the various

physical exercises and activities in a single step using the various built-in trackers. S Health helps to

create a balanced lifestyle pattern by recording a variety of information like your food, caffeine, water

intake, sleep, and stress details. Manage health and environmental records such as heart rate, blood

pressure, blood glucose levels, stress, weight & SpO₂ using built-in sensors and third party devices.

Manage your fitness activities, track your weight and monitor your diet using Samsung Galaxy and

Gear devices.

Samsung S Health is seeking bright new ideas for future feature and services for our application. To

be eligible for this award students will be asked to submit their current ideas for the challenge they

have registered for along with a short explanation on why your idea submission will be beneficial for

current and future S Health users. Submit this document as a supporting document when submitting

your project videos on the website. The winning submission may also have an opportunity to

commercialize the idea to S Health users worldwide.

SocialWellth/DHX Group Happy Fitness Challenge

Research indicates the increasing physical activity and

performing it on a consistent basis is the most effective therapy for most diseases

including mental health and is the most reliable way to increase your happiness. Yet

too few people are engaged in such activity and have begun to seek new digital

health technologies to make fitness fun and engaging. Students competing in this

challenge will be designing and creating apps and games that increase engagement

in fitness.

MetLife Corporate Wellness Challenge

Over 60 percent of all employers provide wellness programs for employees to help promote health

behaviors that lead to creativity, productivity and wellbeing. Yet many of these programs fail to

achieve the adoption necessary for success because they are boring and lack the gamification

necessary for sustainable engagement. Students participating in this challenge will design and create

games that address this market need.

Happify Mental Wellbeing Challenge

Emotional wellbeing affects every facet of our lives and has an even more profound impact on those

with health conditions. Positive psychology, mindfulness and cognitive behavior therapy research

indicates that mental wellbeing can be powerfully supported and improved by building particular

skills. Competitive entries in this challenge should be grounded in peer-review research, have the

potential to provide lasting user engagement, and should appeal to all adult age groups. Cross-

platform compatibility is strongly preferred.

GE Healthcare Clinical Challenge

Doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals have begun to embrace the use of various digital

technologies in the practice of medicine. By doing so they can deliver a novel and high value-added

experience to patients that deliver digital experience in the clinical and non- clinical environments to

achieve the triple-aim of healthcare: affordable services with ubiquitous access, and high quality. In

the GE Healthcare Clinical Challenge students will design and create apps and games that enable the

same type of digital experience in healthcare that consumers experience in all other aspects of their

lives.

Sorenson Center Chronic Disease Challenge

Two-thirds of all healthcare costs are associated with chronic disease. Two-thirds of all American’s

are overweight or obese, a comorbid condition that increases the risk and complications associated

with diabetes, asthma, cardiovascular disease, mental illness, and other similar disease. Students in

this challenge will be adding the gaming mechanics and principles to the experience of managing

chronic disease to help people achieve better health outcomes at substantially lower costs.

Virtual/Augmented Reality Category Many see Virtual and Augmented Reality as having a profound impact on our health. Through these

technologies, we can improve our training of clinicians and other healthcare professionals to give

their real-life experience through simulation. For patients, we can engage them through unique

health, wellness and fitness experiences. Recent innovations have used these technologies to manage

pain, decrease anxiety, and improve healthcare procedures and safety. This category will be looking

at any VR/AR submission in all categories to find the best application of this new technology to

health.

Teams may also enter more than one game into the competition. Each game must be submitted

Example of an eligible student: a student building a game or app at an internship with the support

of co-workers may enter the game as long as the student performed a primary role in the

development of the game.

Appendices

Video Judging Criteria

There are four different areas in which Games4Health submissions can be judged and evaluated in:

challenge specific, best of, kid’s Arcade favorite, and people’s choice. All submissions will be included

in general, best of, and people’s choice judging. The Arcade favorite award will include all

submissions that participate in the arcade.

Challenge Judging Criteria

The following criteria will be used to judge all submissions to determine first, second, and third place

winners. The criteria are the same for each of the five challenge categories, but each submission will

only be judged relative to the other submissions in the same challenge category. Each question is

rated on a consistent five-point scale:

strongly agree | agree | neither agree or disagree | disagree | strongly disagree

Research:

1. The game gathers research data that is used to improve the game and validate its effectiveness.

Behavior:

2. The game has identified a clear targeted focus for behavior change and will effectively change

the behavior.

Overall ranking:

3. This game/app is the best in its category.

Commercialization:

4. There is a clear and effective plan to test the efficacy of the game/app.

5. There is a clear target market identified with reasonable purchasing criteria.

6. The target market is highly likely to pay (directly, indirectly, or through third-parties) for the

game/app based upon the proposed revenue model.

Gamification:

7. The player/user of the game/app will be very emotionally engaged and find it fun.

8. The player/user will find the game/app's user experience and navigation simple, intuitive, and

easy to use.

9. The game mechanics such as levels, incentives, social elements, narrative, etc. will ensure the

game is fun and challenging.

Best of Judging

An overall “best” submission will be chosen for both commercialization and teaser categories.

Whereas in the Challenge judging each submission (both the Teaser and Commercialization videos

together) is judged relative to other submissions for that challenge, in best of all Commercialization

videos are judged relative to each other, across all five challenges, and the same for all Teaser videos.

Judges will then determine the best using the following criteria on the same five-point scale:

Teaser: “This teaser video motivates me to download and play the game”

Commercialization: “This commercialization video convinces me that this will be a successful

business.”

Arcade Favorite Judging

There will be one winner of the Arcade Favorite prize, chosen from those submissions that participate

in the arcade. High school, media, and other students that attend the arcade will vote to determine

their favorite game. The voting period is the 3-hour time window of the Arcade March 31st 2016.

People’s Choice

The People’s Choice award will be chosen using a social media platform, or Facebook voting. All

submissions will be loaded onto the Games4Health Facebook page; then whichever submission

receives the most “likes” during the voting window will win the People’s Choice award. There will be

one winner of the People’s Choice award; either a Teaser or a Commercialization video can win. The

voting period is the same as the voting period for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place Challenge winners. Late votes

will not be counted. Everyone is eligible to vote (participants included) for the People’s Choice award.

Intellectual Property and Legal

During registration, you must accept a Terms of Use agreement to participate in the competition. A

discussion on intellectual property and legal subjects is addressed in the Terms of Use below. Please

refer to these Terms of Use for details on these subjects.

Intellectual Property and Legal Statements

Entry Intellectual Property; Ownership and License. G4H Competitors shall own all intellectual

property they create and submit, including G4H Competitor IP that is created by those G4H

Competitors whose entries are awarded prize money from the Sponsorship (“Winning Entry IP”). If

Sponsor elects to make any use of any G4H Competitor IP, including Winning Entry IP, Sponsor will

be solely responsible for obtaining all rights necessary to use that G4H Competitor IP pursuant to a

separate licensing or other arrangement between Sponsor and the owners of G4H Competitor IP.

Residual Rights of Personnel. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary herein, the Business

School and the Business School’s personnel shall be free to use and employ the Business School’s

and their general skills, know-how, and expertise, and to use, disclose, and employ any generalized

ideas, concepts, know-how, methods, techniques, or skills gained or learned during the course of this

Agreement.

No Use of Trademarks. Without the prior written consent of the other party hereto, which party

may grant or withhold in its sole discretion, neither the Business School nor Sponsor will use any

service marks, trademarks or trade names or other intellectual property now or which may hereafter

be associated with, owned by or exclusively licensed by the other party.
