A message from our President…

Dear WLCT Members,

Thank you again for supporting another successful year of land conservation. With your help, WLCT protected 82 acres with two key acquisitions and a large conservation restriction on private land. The preservation of Westport’s unique character is only made possible by you!

Last year, we began a project to bring a new farmer to Westport while protecting working farmland through the purchase of the Rulon/Sherman Farm on Blossom Road. WLCT partnered with the Town of Westport’s Agricultural Open Space Preservation Trust Fund to permanently protect the property with an Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR) and then held an open proposal process to identify a new farmer for the land. In 2018, the land will be sold to the win-ning farmer at a restricted value and a new farm can begin contributing to our local agricultural community.

In addition to farmland protection, WLCT completed an acquisition on the upper portion of the Westport River near Route 177. This 33-acre property next to the old Lincoln Park will be a fu-ture addition to the Forge Pond Conservation Area. The property boasts over 2,500 feet of East Branch river frontage in an area where most community members have had limited access. We expect to have trails built and open this land to the public in late 2019.

Our land protection efforts were a major focus during 2017, but we were working hard at connecting people with the land as well. We opened the Camara Conservation Area off of Tickle Road which boasts another half mile of trails for visitors to enjoy. We also hosted over 1,000 visitors in our public programs and expanded our efforts through staff and volunteer work to steward the over 800 acres we manage trails on. The Tuesday Trail Team has supported the maintenance of 12 miles of trails this year with over 2,000 volunteer hours. Thank you! Our 10 destination properties continue to delight thousands of visitors a year with stunning views, abundant wildlife and plenty of outdoors to explore!

On behalf of WLCT Board of Directors and staff, I want to thank you all for your tremendous generosity in 2017. But we have more to do! We hope you will continue to support the protection of Westport’s rural character, because development pressure is a consistent peril. Help us ensure the last crop is not asphalt!

The Westport Land Conservation Trust Restricted Funds 12/31/17

The Agricultural Preservation Fund $38,741.00

A revolving fund to provide the Board of Directors with ready access to funds for the acquisition of agricultural land.

The Conservation Restriction Monitoring and Enforcement Fund $96,617.00

A fund for monitoring, enforcement and legal defense related to the stewardship of conservation restrictions held by

the Westport Land Conservation Trust.

The Dune Conservation Fund $25,711.00

A fund restricted to maintenance of coastal dune areas owned by the Town of Westport through planting, fertilizing,

anti-erosion barriers, and placement and maintenance of signs.

The Howland Memorial Stewardship Fund $309,750.00

A fund in memory of Llewellyn and Sarah Howland to provide funding for

the physical maintenance of properties in Westport which are owned in-fee

by the Westport Land Conservation Trust.

The Richmond and Cockeast Ponds Fund $261,591.00

Money restricted to land conversation projects within the Westport Har-

bor area and along the shores of the Richmond and Cockeast Ponds.

The West Branch Fund $23,470.00

Money restricted to conservation-related expenses of land planning of the

West Branch Association, Inc., a neighborhood association of twenty water-

front landowners along the east shore of the West Branch of the Westport

River.
