2017 Annual Report Squam’s Land Trust Dear Friends, What a remarkable year it has been for your Squam Lakes Conservation Society! We assess our performance across a number of metrics, and for this last year those metrics were at record highs or very strong when compared to previous years. We saw major successes not just with significant land conservation projects but also with new memberships, annual and planned giving, volunteer engagement like easement monitoring, and our collaborative partnerships with other Squam-based or regional organizations and our local towns and communities. None of this success happens by accident. If you can imagine your SLCS to be a sailboat, then it is you—our members—who provide the steady winds that fuel our progress. Without your engagement, our ship would go nowhere. The financial support has once again been outstanding, as well as your volunteer efforts, your ideas, and your sourcing of new projects that have kept us moving forward so swiftly. We can navigate under such power so well because of our crew. Yes, your Board of Directors has its hands firmly on the tiller, but the real work is done day-in and day-out by your SLCS staff: Executive Director Roger Larochelle, Stewardship Director Pete Helm, Director of Advancement Alicia Abbott, Land Protection and GIS specialist Zak Brohinsky, and our in-house legal eagle Doug Hill. Each truly is a seasoned expert at what he or she does, and each brings an uncommon level of dedication to our mission. For those of you who have met them, you know how personally devoted they are to our success. And for those of you who have not yet met them, please stop by our SLCS office to say hello! Our organization thrives in part because of the personal relationships we share. Whether you are new to the area or an old timer who hasn’t yet met us, we welcome you to our team. I wish I could predict that it only will be “smooth sailing” for 2018 and beyond, but we know that there will be shoals and sudden storms to keep watch for. This last year, for example, we saw the passing of a number of SLCS’s strongest, long-time supporters. Each of these individuals had led remarkably productive and full lives. They will be missed not just for their friendship and all that they did for Squam, but for their personal embodiment of the values that our organization seeks to foster through our land conservation work. One of our challenges moving forward is to keep teaching the next generation about those values and getting those folks more engaged in our efforts. Land in our Squam Lakes Region often gets passed on from one generation to the next, and similarly passing on the values of responsible land stewardship takes nurturing over time. We have seen members be wonderfully creative in their strategies for doing that, such as giving children and grandchildren SLCS memberships as gifts, bringing younger generations on monitoring walks, and having “family conversations” about the importance of land protection for clean air and water, and for preserving wildlife and native species habitats. We have started our work for 2018 with a genuine sense of optimism and excitement. Our past successes, not just last year but for many years now, have positioned us well for advancing our land conservation goals and our community engagement. What we need most is for you to stay involved and committed, despite the competing demands of this ever-busier world. Let us know your thoughts, and what about our work matters most to you. With your support again this year, we are confident that we will continue to flourish. Best Wishes Carl Metzger, President

2017 Annual Report

Squam’s Land TrustDear Friends,

What a remarkable year it has been for your Squam Lakes Conservation Society! We assess our performance across a number of metrics, and for this last year those metrics were at record highs or very strong when compared to previous years. We saw major successes not just with signifi cant land conservation projects but also with new memberships, annual and planned giving, volunteer engagement like easement monitoring, and our collaborative partnerships with other Squam-based or regional organizations and our local towns and communities.

None of this success happens by accident. If you can imagine your SLCS to be a sailboat, then it is you—our members—who provide the steady winds that fuel our progress. Without your engagement, our ship would go nowhere. The fi nancial support has once again been outstanding, as well as your volunteer efforts, your ideas, and your sourcing of new projects that have kept us moving forward so swiftly.

We can navigate under such power so well because of our crew. Yes, your Board of Directors has its hands fi rmly on the tiller, but the real work is done day-in and day-out by your SLCS staff: Executive Director Roger Larochelle, Stewardship Director Pete Helm, Director of Advancement Alicia Abbott, Land Protection and GIS specialist Zak Brohinsky, and our in-house legal eagle Doug Hill. Each truly is a seasoned expert at what he or she does, and each brings an uncommon level of dedication to our mission. For those of you who have met them, you know how personally devoted they are to our success. And for those of you who have not yet met them, please stop by our SLCS offi ce to say hello!

With your support again this year, we are confi dent that we will continue to fl ourish.

Best Wishes

Carl Metzger, President

As you will see from the following list, our Members are a remarkable group of dedicated individuals and families. They are bringing us one step closer to ensuring the Squam we enjoy today is successfully and respectfully handed down to the next generation. The love for Squam manifest in each contribution provides the resources resulting in 28% of our watershed now permanently protected. My deepest thanks to all our members and partners for another exceptional year in 2017. We are making tremendous progress. Onward!

2017 Property Monitoring Team Wins GoldWell, not quite…but they sure deserve it! And, if there were an Olympics for monitoring, the group below would, no doubt, be the world’s favorite! These folks give of their time and energy to walk conserved lands all over the Squam Lakes watershed. They use their eyes and ears to track critters that call the land home. They keep watch for invasive plants. They use technology to get there and back. And they write a quick story of their adventure. They are an amazing group of individuals, who collectively, provide added value to the Squam community, the surrounding lands and water, and to all of us who care about this place we call Squam. Look for Team Synergy at the next Conservation Olympics! And until then, please thank those in this group for their dedication and commitment to SLCS and this wonderful community.
