Providence House began in 1988 when two members of First Presbyterian Church in Shreveport, Louisiana, Mary Anne Selber and Jean Sayres, recognized a need for shelter services for homeless families with children. Originally named Evergreen House and operated by the Salvation Army, the organization served as a temporary shelter until 1992 when it became evident there was a greater need in Northwest Louisiana for transitional housing for families with children. The organization was then renamed Providence House and the mission evolved to provide long-term solutions to breaking the homeless cycle. The comprehensive support services were developed to help each family address the root causes that led them to homelessness and ultimately move them toward their highest level of self-sufficiency. Providence House has continued to grow over the years in response to the needs of residents and the greater community.

Mission: The mission of Providence House is to, ”Break the Homeless Cycle One Family at a Time”. Our mission statement speaks to what we believe and is the underlying motiva-tion for all that we do at Providence House. The Lord who created you says: “Fear not, I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine.” Isaiah 43:1 Providence House is a ministry called to live out God’s gracious intention, sovereign purpose and steadfast love for each and every person. In providing shelter, care, support and encour-agement for families in need, we seek to be a visible sign and instrument of God’s own provision for all of His children.

Programs: Our programs are founded on three strong pillars: (1) Education- 4 STAR/Type III Child Development Center and a full time HiSet/GED Program- Working to Learn, (2) Supportive Services- Counseling, Financial Literacy, Parent-ing/Life Skills, Employment Preparation, Workforce Development, Case Manage-ment, and (3) Emergency/Permanent Housing - The “House” will accommodate up to 27 families and we manage up to 40 apartments throughout Shreveport and Bossier City.

Lessons from Our Team

5

It is impossible to understand purpose until you have launched into the deep or embarked upon your dream. Both are true for me! Since December 14, 2015 I have been blessed to give leadership to an incredible team whose focus and commitment to service is unparalleled. We are thankful for every lesson learned, every hug given, and every mountain crossed- it has made us better, more focused and more determined than ever to, “Break the homeless cycle one family at a time.” Together, we have found new footing and are embarking on a new journey. The best is yet to come! Homelessness is not helplessness. We are watching lives being transformed right before us because of the generosity of this community. The hours are long and the work is hard, but the rewards are far greater. Thank you, for allowing us to serve, give, live and learn. We are better because of you and the Providence House Team.
