Summit Medical Group Annual Report / 2017 1
Letter from the Chairman
Sincerely, Jeffrey Le Benger, MDCHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Thank you to all the providers and employees who are so passionately committed to helping our patients live well and stay well.
Welcome to Summit Medical Group’s 2017 Annual Report. It’s truly a pleasure to reflect on the progress we have made during this year of significant expansion. Summit Medical Group (SMG) has seen positive growth in providers, services, and facilities – all with the goal of enhancing our ability to care for our patients and their families. Highlights include:
• Adding 100+ providers, bringing our total to 813 providers working out of 87 locations across seven New Jersey counties
• Extending our signature care model into Bergen County in northern New Jersey through our acquisition of Fair Lawn’s New Jersey Associates in Internal Medicine (NJAIM)
• Working diligently to deliver efficient, convenient, high-quality care at reduced cost, and continuing a five-year trend of year-over-year savings for commercial ACOs
• Educating the public about the partnership between SMG and Texas-based MD Anderson, the nation’s leading cancer center
• Completing construction of Summit Medical Group MD Anderson Cancer Center at Florham Park, setting the stage to give patients in
northern New Jersey access to a continuum of high-quality outpatient care, from diagnosis to survivorship, close to home
• Opening the new Summit Medical Group MD Anderson Radiation Oncology Department in Berkeley Heights, offering a full spectrum of radiation treatment modalities
• Leading the response to New Jersey’s stringent opioid prescribing laws by helping to educate physicians and patients about new requirements, and identifying alternative therapies
• Developing strategies to manage risk by creating a care management system – especially for patients with chronic illnesses – that focuses on upstream interventions to avert ED visits and inpatient hospitalizations

CLINICAL DIRECTORS AND ROLES
Our Clinical and Administrative Directors play a pivotal role in SMG’s daily operations. These talented individuals are the critical link between our providers and clinical and administrative staff. With their finger on the pulse of our key departments and service lines, they provide not only the clinical and administrative know-how to get the job done, but also the human touch necessary to keep SMG centered on patients and on our people.

INFUSION SERVICES AVAILABLE IN FLORHAM PARK
As of September, infusion services became available in the Florham Park Urgent Care Infusion Center. Specialty infusion services are provided Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. These in-house infusion resources help SMG providers maintain oversight of their patients and improve patient satisfaction, while reducing the total cost of care and increasing revenue for SMG. Whenever these infusion services are needed in the Florham Park area, patients can now be referred to the Florham Park UCC Infusion Center.
INFUSION COMPOUNDING ROOM
2017 saw the opening of SMG‘s first infusion compounding room. The state-of-the-art facility is designed to ensure patient safety in every aspect of infusion. Our infusion compounding room is one of the first in New Jersey to meet the USP 800 requirements that go into effect December 2019, and we actually met them in 2017! The infusion compounding room is staffed by trained New Jersey state-licensed pharmacists and technicians, with pharmacists overseeing every step of infusion preparation.
• Adding tomosynthesis (3-D digital mammography) in Florham Park (previously only available in Berkeley Heights and Livingston)
• Adding diagnostic mammography in Florham Park and Livingston (previously only available in Berkeley Heights)
• Appointing Dr. William Diehl as the Medical Director of the Breast Care Center
• Recruiting a new surgeon, Dr. Priya Jadeja, to accommodate increasing patient volume
• Using a multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer care, ensuring that patients can see all necessary specialists in a coordinated visit, to minimize stress, delays, and time between diagnosis and treatment

BREAST PROGRAM EXPANSION
The Summit Medical Group Breast Care Center has been designated a Certified Quality Breast Center of Excellence™ by the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers (NQMBC). The Breast Center also holds another national accreditation by The American College of Surgeons – the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). We are currently working to enhance access to breast cancer screening and treatment resources with an emphasis on early detection. We have also strengthened our breast program through the following improvements:
6
WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
Our multidisciplinary, evidence-based program takes a highly personalized approach to the medical management of obesity. In order to promote safe, effective weight loss, we provide each patient with a customized plan, including diet and recommendations for healthy lifestyle changes. Our multidisciplinary team, led by Dr. Taraneh Soleymani, includes behaviorists, certified trainers, registered dietitians, and bariatric surgeons.
OPIOID STEWARDSHIP
Summit Medical Group has taken a proactive approach to combating the opioid epidemic. In addition to joining Turn the Tide RX, the Surgeon General’s national campaign to combat the opioid crisis, we held physician forum meetings to educate doctors about complying with the New Jersey law. Our multipronged approach includes:
• Using the state’s Prescription Monitoring Program
• Educating patients about risks and side effects of opioids through simple flyers physicians can hand out in the office
• Analyzing each patient’s cause of pain to determine whether alternative pain management treatments would be effective
• Establishing an agreement between doctor and patient whereby the patient agrees they can only receive an opioid prescription from one doctor and no more than two pharmacies
• Mandating CME every two years on responsible opioid practices and alternative pain management, and recognizing the signs of opioid abuse and addiction
CONVENIENCE CARE
Summit Medical Group is committed to providing care to patients when and where they need it. Under the directorship of Dr. Corey Smith, we operate four Urgent Care Centers in Berkeley Heights, Florham Park, Livingston, and Westfield. We also added our popular Fast Track services in the Livingston Urgent Care, which features same-day evaluation and treatment for minor health problems. Fast Track shortens wait times, enhancing patient convenience and satisfaction. In addition to Urgent Care, we now feature Orthopedics and Sports Injury Walk-In Clinics (led by Dr. Eric Mirsky) and Pediatrics After Hours (led by Dr. Pompeo Lucciola).

Online Scheduling
Consumers are increasingly coming to expect the convenience of online scheduling, and SMG delivers. We are now offering online scheduling for existing and new patients in New Jersey via Zocdoc and the Athena patient portal. Our portal adoption rate held steady at around 56% of the patient population. We saw an increase in use of online scheduling after implementing changes in May that enabled patients to view open spaces on physicians’ calendars, and to schedule appointments for physicals online. We also opened up online bill payment to enable patients to self-pay with only a statement, without requiring a portal account.

With the acquisition of Fair Lawn-based New Jersey Associates in Internal Medicine (NJAIM), SMG established a presence in Bergen County and expanded the service area to include 11 counties. A pillar of the Bergen County medical community for over 65 years, NJAIM has two well-equipped office locations and 20 practitioners with multiple specialties.
We have also strengthened our presence in other parts of New Jersey, thanks to the acquisitions listed below:
Ridgedale Family Medical Associates – Located in East Hanover, this practice provides the expertise of two physicians specializing in internal medicine and pediatrics.
Neurology Group of North Jersey – In addition to their expertise in neurology, the providers in this Clifton-based group are fluent in Spanish, Yiddish, and Afrikaans!
Center for Orthopedics – This West Orange-based group is a great addition to our team of orthopedic experts.
ENT Solutions of New Jersey – Based in Nutley, this group includes both ENTs and audiologists.

2017 Highlights
A NEW MODEL FOR CANCER CARE
More than a state-of-the-art cancer care facility, Summit Medical Group MD Anderson Cancer Center is a transformative care delivery model for the nation. We are the first and only physician-owned care delivery system to partner with a premier academic cancer center, as opposed to a hospital or health care system. This allows Summit Medical Group to provide our patients with access to leading-edge technology, advanced therapeutic modalities, and emerging treatments – the highest level of care in the most value-based way.
Our partnership with MD Anderson Cancer Center is an extension of MD Anderson’s relationship with South Jersey’s Cooper University Health Care. This collaboration officially began in 2016, when we began offering cancer care based on MD Anderson’s guide-lines out of our Berkeley Heights and Morristown locations. We are taking a phased approach to the opening of our
new Cancer Center. While many departments are already serving patients, the center will hold an official grand opening in the fall of 2018.
A STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY
The center is housed in a striking, state-of-the-art, 130,000-square-foot building in a peaceful wooded setting in Florham Park. Designed for seamless, collaborative care, Summit Medical Group MD Anderson Cancer Center provides a full spectrum of treatment modalities including medical oncology, infusion, surgery, and radiation. Covering the entire continuum of care, from rou-tine screenings and diagnostics all the way through survivorship, services include the following:
• Breast Surgery
• Chemotherapy Infusion
• Dermatology
• General Surgery
• Gynecologic Oncology
• Imaging
• Laboratory
• Oncology & Hematology
• Plastic Surgery
• Radiation Oncology
• Vascular Services
Although Texas-based MD Anderson has been ranked first in the nation for cancer care for the past decade, consumers in New York and New Jersey are more familiar with other esteemed cancer care providers. In order to edu-cate the public about Summit Medical Group MD Anderson Cancer Center’s high-caliber care and capabilities, we launched a multimedia marketing campaign. The campaign urges people with cancer to “think about #1” and seek “better care closer to home.”
With 600 patients scheduled in Medical Oncology the first week we opened, we are well on our way to our goal of becoming the lead provider of cancer services in the northern New Jersey Metropolitan Area.

Building Our Base in Bergen County
This past year, Summit Medical Group made major inroads into New Jersey’s most populous county with our acquisition of Fair Lawn’s New Jersey Associates in Internal Medicine (NJAIM). The main NJAIM facility in Fair Lawn encom-passes a fully renovated suite of offices and 44 examination rooms. Patients enjoy access to a full array of services, from bone density testing and X-ray imaging to colonoscopy and infusion care, in one central location.
To accommodate this area’s growing health care needs, we added OB/GYN and surgery to this facility. We also opened a location at 19-21 Fair Lawn Avenue, which provides family medicine, OB/GYN, and allergy/immunology services. This additional site will accommodate 15-20 physicians. The addition of NJAIM to our network of care significantly expands our presence in northern New Jersey.
Radiation oncology is a crucial part of the comprehen-sive, collaborative cancer care we are able to provide patients through our partnership with MD Anderson. We were thrilled to begin offering state-of-the-art radiation services in Berkeley Heights in November 2017. Our facility on 1 Diamond Hill Road houses the area’s first PET/CT scanner, a powerful tool that combines two imaging techniques: a positron emission tomography (PET) scan that reveals physiological changes in the body and a computed tomography (CT) scan, which depicts the anatomical structure where
the changes are taking place. Combining these two images offers a complete picture of what is happening in the body, allowing for earlier detection of tumors. In addition to this exciting PET/CT technology, our advanced radiation oncology services cover the full spectrum of therapies, including External Beam Radiation, Brachytherapy, Stereotactic Radiosurgery, Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy, Rapid Arc, and Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy. Services will be available at Summit Medical Group MD Anderson Cancer Center in Florham Park in mid-2018.

Clinical Advancements
Medication Adherence Success
Summit Medical Group Clinical Pharmacists collaborated with providers and patients to address the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) triple weighted stars medication adherence measures. The team was successful in achieving tier 3 for all three therapeutic drug categories with one of our Medicare Advantage payers (see table at right). In order to achieve this, they reached out to patients identified on payer reports as being non-adherent with taking these life-saving medications. In addition, the Clinical Pharmacy team developed a Medication Adherence Best Practices document. This document included provider-driven, patient-focused, and tool-oriented recommendations. While patients may be non-adherent to their medications for a variety of reasons (cost, pill burden, or side effects), the Clinical Pharmacists tailored recommendations based on the patient’s reason for non-adherence. The team will continue to work with patients to involve them in choosing the prescribed therapy by selecting between agents based on desired outcomes.
Behavioral Health
Summit Medical Group has 50 full- and part-time behavioral health staff, including psychiatrists, psycholo-gists, LPCs, and clinical social workers providing medical management as well as adult and pediatric cognitive behavioral treatment. In 2017, we expanded services to Warren and Clifton.
We have also embedded eight behavioral health specialists in several of our practices: five in Primary Care, one in Pediatrics, and two in Oncology. They are there to intervene when a physician feels a patient could benefit from counseling for substance abuse, depression, and other psychological issues. Whenever possible, the physician will introduce his or her patient to the integrated behavioral health clinician in a real-time “warm hand-off.” This specialist will see a patient for as many as four sessions, after which they are referred for more specialized behavioral health care as needed. Behavioral health is currently exploring two new initiatives:
• A collaborative care pilot with Cigna in which Summit Medical Group will get reimbursed if we identify and care for Cigna patients who have a chronic health condition and a behavioral health or substance use problem. This is to focus on addressing both the physical and emotional issues that negatively impact each other.
• Introducing a telepsychiatry program with the focus of eventually having psychiatry accessible to patients in their primary care physician’s office.
Partnerships with Medicare and Other Payers to Improve Care
In 2017 Summit Medical Group completed its second year of participation in Medicare’s Next Generation Accountable Care Organization (ACO) care model. We have partnered with the Trinity Health System to create the multistate Trinity Health ACO. This past year, we also learned that in 2016, our ACO was successful in delivering high-quality care while reducing the cost of care for our population. Approximately 80% of the savings were shared by CMS with the THACO chapters.
Summit Medical Group continues to partner with Aetna and United Healthcare to manage their Medicare Advantage populations through value-based agreements that reward us for better patient care outcomes and reduced health care expenses. Based on the success of these contracts, we entered into a new value-based contract with Horizon Medicare Advantage in 2017.
In 2017, the 2016 performance on ACO contracts with the state’s largest commercial insurers, Horizon, Aetna, and Cigna, was finalized. And once again SMG delivered some of the highest-quality care in the region while continuing to bend the cost curve. SMG was recognized for having one of the lowest Emergency Department utilization rates of any group in the country.

AMGA AI Collaborative
Summit Medical Group was selected to participate in the American Medical Group Association’s Adult Immunization (AI) Collaborative in April 2017. We focused on improving influenza vaccination rates for all patients and pneumococcal vaccination rates in patients 65 and older. In order to achieve this, we opened additional influenza clinics and developed a pneumococcal vaccination algorithm based on CDC guidelines to reduce variation and improve clinical outcomes. We then provided educational programs to specialty and primary care providers, emphasizing adherence to guidelines and the importance of capturing documentation of vaccines administered at retail pharmacies. Our efforts resulted in a 9% increase in our influenza vaccination rate over baseline and a 4% increase in pneumococcal vacci-nation rate over baseline.
This has helped reduce the clinical and economic burden of these vaccine-preventable diseases in our patient population. We will continue to monitor adherence to the guidelines through data collection and drive improvement through ongoing education and transparent data reporting to our providers.

Clinical Informatics Enhancements
Summit Health Management Clinical Informatics Specialists have been instrumental in promoting consis-tency of care. They have achieved this by standardizing workflow processes within the Electronic Health Record (EHR) to reduce variation, improve quality of care and outcomes, and optimize Population Health Management.
The Clinical Informatics team partnered with providers, clinical staff, and medical leadership to identify and resolve documentation and compliance challenges, gaps in care, and patient safety concerns, helping to satisfy evolving federal, EHR meaningful use, and other regula-tory programs. In close collaboration with Information Technology and Population Health, the team facilitated many technology projects related to Electronic Health Records, clinical information systems, and clinical information including the following:
• Implementation of Athena Streamlined
• Urgent Care Athena optimization
• Healthfinch Medication Refill project
• Collaboration on the Aria Medical Oncology implementation
• Development of Florham Park Infusion Center order sets
The Clinical Informatics team, led by Dr. Nele Jessel, created EHR templates and electronic workflows that have reduced paper, increased compliance and charge capture, and improved provider efficiency and produc-tivity. This included development of the New Jersey State Law Compliant Opioid Prescribing workflow, the Medicare Annual Wellness Visit workflow, the Nurse Visit with Injection workflow, the Lung Cancer Screening Workflow, and more, allowing SMG to satisfy quality metrics for depression screening, smoking cessation counseling, medication reconciliation, and pediatric care. Reducing the Need for Breast Biopsies with the New Videssa® Blood Test
The Breast Care Center at Summit Medical Group was the first center in the tri-state area to offer the ground-breaking new Videssa® Breast blood test. Videssa can detect the presence or absence of breast cancer in women whose imaging results are difficult to interpret. Before the blood test was available, the standard of care was to biopsy the suspicious area. Nine out of 10 of these biopsies would turn out to be benign. A clinical trial found that the blood test reduced the number of recommended biopsies by 63%. Videssa was more than 80% accurate when determining if cancer was present.
Women who are eligible for the test have blood drawn and sent to the laboratory. By combining the Videssa results with imaging tests, medical history, family history, and a physical exam, physicians can better determine if a biopsy is needed. The blood test is most helpful for women who have mammogram results that fall into either the BI-RADS 3 category (probably benign) or the BI-RADS 4 category (suspicious).
Paxman Scalp Cooling Device
For many cancer patients, women in particular, the hair loss that accompanies chemotherapy is especially traumatic. By lowering the temperature of the scalp before, during, and after chemotherapy, scalp cooling minimizes damage to hair follicles by reducing blood flow to the area around the hair follicles. Both our Florham Park and Berkeley Heights infusion facilities currently have Paxman Scalp Cooling Devices available in the infusion rooms.
Clinical Research
Clinical Trials to Alleviate Sinus Congestion
OPTINOSE XHANCE™
Nearly 10 million people in the U.S. suffer from benign growths that block the nasal passages and cause congestion, pain and pressure, sinus infections, and difficulty breathing. Our ENT/Allergy Department was part of a clinical trial that led the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to approve XHANCE™ (fluticasone proprionate), a new nasal spray for the treatment of nasal polyps in patients 18 years of age or older. The trial helped earn this product FDA approval, and it has since been brought to market.
RESOLVE 2 SINUS IMPLANT
Our ENT/Allergy Department is currently participating in a trial of the Resolve 2 Sinus implant. This is an implantable device that releases a steady dose of steroids directly to the sinuses. The implant could bring new hope to patients whose chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis has not improved after surgery.
Summit Medical Group is committed to contributing to medical innovation, whether as early adopters of innovative treatments and devices or by participating in clinical trials.

Physician Support and Engagement
NEWSLETTERS
Based on what we heard from physicians, we’ve created a range of regular newsletters to help keep everyone informed about news and updates from medical group management.
• Provider Matters offers high-level, strategic insights about Summit Medical Group’s future, structure, and expansion
• Provider in the Know updates providers on day-to-day operations
• Primary Care in the Know offers news of particular interest to our large and growing roster of family medicine, internal medicine, and other primary care clinicians
• APC in the Know has a specialist focus and is geared to our Advanced Practicing Clinicians
WAYS TO COMMUNICATE
It’s often difficult for physicians to make in-person meetings, so we are experimenting with more “virtual” meetings and interactive channels to enable more providers to participate and give feedback via phone or web link.
Communication
To Enhance the Professional Fulfillment and Personal Well-Being of All SMG Physicians and Providers
Physicians face significant pressure striving to balance the competing demands of caring for patients, maintaining the EHR, managing their practice, and finding time for personal life. As a physician-led organization, we understand these concerns, and we are working diligently to develop programs to alleviate stress that can lead to burnout. To determine what type of support would be most beneficial to physicians in our group, James Korman, PSYD, ACT, Director of Behavioral Health and Provider Engagement, led a key initiative designed to gather input and provide solutions.
Almost 500 physicians and providers were invited, and more than 250 participated in a series of meetings with the board of directors. Participants had the opportunity to discuss issues, share ideas, ask questions, and collaborate on potential solutions. The open dialogue revealed three key goals for improvement (Communication, Provider Support, and Sense of Community), and we have since rolled out programs to assist in each area. Meetings on these topics are still ongoing, and physicians can also confidentially communicate their comments, concerns, and solutions by email and phone. We are committed to honing these programs and developing others as needs evolve.
22
Provider Support – In an effort to help providers avoid burnout, cope with stress, and navigate legal and ethical issues, we added a few valuable support programs in 2017.
PEER PROVIDER SUPPORT PROGRAM (PPSP)
Our new Peer Provider Support Program (PPSP) is designed to assist providers who experience stress from an unexpected adverse outcome, legal issue, or even a personal situation outside of work. The program provides confidential support from specially trained colleagues who provide empathy and under-standing to help participants successfully navigate these issues.
INBOX MANAGEMENT FOR PHYSICIANS ON VACATION
Taking time off is vital for work/life balance, but it’s often difficult for Primary Care physicians to realistically “unplug” from the EHR and the daily concerns of their practice. A team comprised of Drs. Kerry LeBenger, James Korman, Richard Paris, Epifanio Calcara, Nele Jessel, and Robin Simmons helped implement a new system to reduce this fatigue and stress. The new Athena Vacation Inbox Management system is designed to enable physicians to get away without worrying about patient orders and tasks going unaddressed or piling up into post-vacation blues.
Now, dedicated Advanced Practice Clinicians (APCs) are responsible for monitoring and responding to critical patient messages while the PCP is out of the office. This way, physicians can unplug, relax, and recharge while their office team is not burdened working over and above their daily responsibilities.
Sense of Community – In addition to the other efforts to help our providers network and engage with each other, we planned for and will be implementing a new digital platform for clinicians in the coming months. Yammer 365 is a closed Microsoft social network designed to build a secure intra-office community. Participants can create their own group, by office, specialty, or even common interests.
PRIMARY CARE POD RESTRUCTURING
Because it is our largest specialty, communication between leadership and our Primary Care physicians is crucial, but it can be challenging. In order to ensure more effective, seamless communications, we replaced our previous POD Liaison structure with a new Regional Lead Physician structure. Our goal is to facilitate engage-ment, enhance networking opportunities, and provide a better avenue for constructive feedback to leadership. Under this plan, eight Regional Lead Physicians received training in communication, leadership, and conflict resolution to help prepare them for their key role in improving bilateral communication, provider support, and a connection to the SMG community.
NETWORKING EVENTS
Feedback from the initial input meetings with providers revealed that some feel isolated and would be interested in more opportunity for interaction with other specialists, both professionally and socially. In 2017, we began holding “meet & greet” and networking events for physicians to engage with colleagues.

Our Great Doctors Are Doing Good
Summit Medical Group physicians do all they can to help people get and stay healthy – including taking a healthy interest in people outside of their practices and communities. Below are just a few examples of physicians who used their skills and passion to help others.
PROVIDERS EMBARK ON A MEDICAL MISSION
Waves of Health has been addressing the primary care needs of underserved people in developing countries since 2007. The nonprofit medical outreach organization puts together interdisciplinary teams that travel to communities where care is badly needed to establish a treatment center where patients are triaged, medically evaluated, dispensed medications required to manage acute or chronic illnesses, and counseled about health concerns. SMG providers Dr. Christopher Boni and Kelly Healy-Kries, NP, organized a team that included Dr. Charles Gelber on a medical mission to the Dominican Republic. The daily clinic in Restauración, near the Haitian border, sees up to 400 patients a day for a week. It’s hard work, but our providers report that the days are highlighted with moments of joyful human connections.
DR. MANDAL PUBLISHES CHILDREN’S BOOK
SMG Internal Medicine specialist Dr. Soma Mandal published a children’s book, Sonya Sahni and the First Grade: It’s International Day! Based upon her own experience, it’s a heartwarming story about a USA born girl of Indian descent who discovers that she can simultaneously appreciate and celebrate different cultures.

Corporate Social Responsibility
FUNDRAISING: GOOD TIMES FOR THE GREATER GOOD
The Foundation raised well over a million dollars in various fundraising events:
Hosted by Seth Meyers, the Laugh, Love, and Bid Gala raised $1.1 million for local underserved communities.
The 5th Annual Golf Invitational at the Hamilton Farm Golf Club in Gladstone, New Jersey, hosted 128 golfers and raised nearly $280,000 for the Foundation’s healthy community programs.
Broadway’s brightest stars joined forces with Summit Medical Group Foundation and the Community Food Bank of New Jersey to stage a holiday benefit cabaret to battle hunger. The December event raised $50,000 for the Food, Health and Hope: An Answer to Diabetes Initiative, a community program striving to eradicate diabetes among underserved New Jersey adults.
WORKING FOR A HEALTHIER COMMUNITY
In an effort to prevent, diagnose, and control diabetes among New Jersey adults living below the poverty level, we partnered with the Community Food Bank of New Jersey and seven community/faith-based agencies on an initiative called Food, Health, and Hope: An Answer to Diabetes.
We staged asthma, diabetes, and hypertension screenings at food bank locations, working with each to educate clients about healthy eating. We also donated 600 holiday turkeys and more than 1,000 pounds of fixings.
We held drives to donate 875 backpacks and Christmas toys to underserved New Jersey schoolchildren. Our mobile health screening van also tested children for vision problems.
HURRICANE RELIEF
As a clinical partner with The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, SMG joined in their relief effort to help those impacted by Hurricane Harvey. We sent $24,000 in cash donations to MD Anderson’s Caring Fund and divided 4,133 pounds of donated goods between Texas and hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico.
EDUCATING TOMORROW’S HEALTH CARE SPECIALISTS
This year, the Foundation’s Next Generation Medical Scholarship Program awarded more than $60,000 in scholarships. In addition, our Careers in Medicine program provided hands-on, one-on-one shadowing for young people over 18. This is an inspiring and eye-opening opportunity for young people contemplating a career in health-related fields.
The Summit Medical Group Foundation: Charity Really Does Begin at Home
The SMG Foundation, led by Executive Director Joe Finocchiaro, has two overarching goals: to provide access to health care for the underserved population and to inspire and educate future health care leaders. These are just a few of the key projects the Foundation embarked on in 2017.
