When Anna was 21-years-old, she came to
Gateway but decided she was not yet ready for the
commitment to recovery. After three group homes
and four years of maturing, Anna is back and proving
that she has what it takes to become independent.
She is now living in an apartment on our Chesterfield
You Help Individuals with Serious Mental Illness Give Back to the Community
campus while learning to balance her personal life
with home and work duties. That’s exciting, but
what’s even more heartening is Anna’s newly found
dedication to helping others.
Over a year ago, Anna began volunteering with
individuals with physical disabilities at The Virginia
Home. She has a gift for making people feel
comfortable, and a group of individuals look forward
to Anna’s camaraderie and fun ideas when she visits.
Anna takes the time to go beyond small talk and
really listen, which sometimes means understanding
subtle nonverbal cues. Anna’s known to help
individuals set up their rooms to make them more
comfortable. And, she’s happy to sit down with them
to write letters to loved ones, read a book, or play a
game. As the holidays approach, Anna is sure to find
ways to brighten the season for her friends at The
Virginia Home.

On July 25th, Wendy’s dream of moving back
to her home town, Martinsville, came true. Like
95 percent of the individuals you help, Wendy
remains psychiatrically stable and enjoys living as
independently as possible. We will miss Wendy,
but the welcome she received from family and
friends in Martinsville makes us very happy for her!
Nate and John are enjoying a
gorgeous afternoon in front of Gateway’s
Activity Center after attending psychosocial
rehabilitation group and activities.
You’re helping Kieran to earn her Certified
Nursing Assistant degree so she can
work with a registered nurse to provide
healthcare in a medical setting.

Nick transitioned into the community once before
and lived by himself in an apartment. Unfortunately,
he experienced a relapse. Gateway moved him
back to campus, and he quickly progressed toward
recovery once again. He reestablished his mental
health stability, strengthened his independent living
skills, and successfully transitioned to the community.
And, You Understand that Sometimes a Do-Over Is Necessary
...and Happy Endings for Those with Serious Mental Illness
Not only did you help Betty and Erik gain the skills
and confidence they need to live independently, but
you also helped them find each other! On March
7th Betty and Erik had a beautiful wedding at our
Chesterfield Campus among those who love them.
They are starting their new adventure together in
their own apartment in Chesterfield County where
Erik works full time. Together, we will support their
success with psychiatric, nursing, and counseling
services as well as any needed transportation.

The center is a bustling place where individuals
gather for small group counseling sessions
such as art therapy, cooking classes, and
recreation activities. (This is where Betty and
Erik were married.)
You partnered with the Metropolitan Health Foundation and the Windsor Foundation to Update Gateway’s Activity Center

You’ve Extended Gateway’s Program to Reach Individuals in Williamsburg...
WILLIAMSBURG JUST CELEBRATED ITS FIRST
ANNIVERSARY!
Over the year, you have facilitated the discharge of
36 individuals from Eastern State Hospital!
Kelly and Matthew have become best friends at the Hamilton House in Williamsburg. They love to take “guys’ trips” to the beach so Matthew can cut the waves with his surfboard, and Kelly, a keen birdwatcher, can track a new species or two.
“Best program I’ve been in. I am happy that Gateway accepted me into the program and happy that the transition was smooth for me.”
- Terrell Taylor
Ramel published a book of musings and personal experiences about his journey with schizoaffective disorder. His book has been added to the Local Authors Project Collection at the Williamsburg Library.

...and Fairfax
THIS YEAR IN FAIRFAX, YOU INCREASED THE
NUMBER OF INDIVIDUALS WE HELP AT ANY ONE
TIME FROM EIGHT TO 40!
We continue to work with Health Planning Region II
and Fairfax County to meet the challenging needs of
the the people they serve.
Due to the expansion, Gateway was able to reunite twin brothers, Christian and Eugene, and move them closer together. Both have identified each other as their primary support, and now living less than one mile from each other makes visiting possible and exciting for both.
On October 31st, Fairfax hosted a grand Halloween party bringing together all Gateway residentsand staff. The party was so successful it will now become an annual event.
Gateway’s administrative office for Health Planning Region II and Fairfax County has relocated to one of the four new residential facilities opened in August 2017. The four new facilities located throughout the county includes one which serves more intensive care needs of residents and three others providing supervised living.

Families are a priority
One Step at a TimeGateway clients and staff enjoy raising awareness of and funding for mental health through Virginia’s 10th
annual NAMIWalk.
We love Gateway Families! Supportive families of
individuals with serious mental illness make a huge
difference to the success of the individuals. On the
frontline, they reinforce what we teach, demonstrate
positive behaviors and provide supportive networks. They
are strong advocates for Gateway and mental health, and
we applaud their steadfast efforts!

Since 1983 Gateway Homes is the only 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in
Virginia to provide a transitional residential treatment program for individuals
diagnosed with a serious mental illness. In the last two years, Gateway has
added six new facilities in northern and eastern Virginia and doubled our total
bed capacity from 48 to 96.
Mrs. Florence Z. Segal, Co-founder of Gateway Homes is the honoree for the Volunteer Impact Award for the
2017 National Philanthropy Day. The award was presented at the Association of Fundraising Professionals
