Year in Review

This 2013 Michigan Opera Theatre (MOT) Annual Report is intended to provide a brief overview of the events and activities that occurred between July 1, 2012

and June 30, 2013. Michigan Opera Theatre’s 42nd season of opera consisted of two company premieres, and two beloved operas, all featuring outstanding casts. The autumn opera season, made possible by Ford Motor Company, began in October with five performances of Rossini’s quintessential comic opera, “The Barber of Seville.” November brought about the highly-anticipated company premiere of Handel’s “Julius Caesar,” featuring world renowned countertenors, David Daniels and Anthony Roth Costanzo, in company (mainstage) debut performances. The spring opera season, generously sponsored by the General Motors Foundation, began with another new addition to the repertoire, Beethoven’s “Fidelio,” which garnered rave reviews. The curtain came down on the spring season with a spectacular production of Verdi’s “Aida,” featuring Met favorite Latonia Moore, and conducted by Steven Mercurio. The landmark season was supported by a marketing campaign tagged as “Drama In The D.” Location photography for the four productions commenced at Pete’s Barbershop in Greektown for “The Barber of Seville,” the former Wayne County Building in Downtown Detroit for “Julius Caesar,” Detroit’s St. Joseph Catholic Church on Gratiot Avenue for “Fidelio,” and the former Michigan Central Station in Corktown for “Aida.” Once again, for those who could not attend a performance of opera at the Detroit Opera House, audiences could listen to a live broadcast on WRCJ radio, Detroit’s home for classical and jazz programming. The 17th season of dance began with a Detroit Opera House stage debut by New York City Ballet, which danced a mixed repertory program. This was followed by Detroit’s original holiday tradition “The Nutcracker,” performed by BalletMet Columbus, and accompanied by the Michigan Opera Theatre Orchestra. The spring dance season featured the return of Michigan-based Eisenhower Dance Ensemble, with a production dubbed “Red, Hot and Blue.” The season concluded with the long-awaited return of Dance Theatre of Harlem, and an annual visit by the wildly popular Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. The holiday season, in addition to “The Nutcracker,” featured annual partnership with the Rackham Symphony Choir production of Handel’s “Too Hot to Handel.” Additionally, the Opera House hosted a multi week run of Broadway in Detroit’s production of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” which brought over 30,000 patrons to the Opera House, many for the first time. The Michigan Opera Theatre Children’s Chorus, performed a spirited holiday “fantasy” concert, and produced a robust production of “The Happy Prince” in April. The season also marked the debut of the MOT Preparatory Chorus (seen page 16). Additional events this season included the return of Broadway in Detroit’s production of Disney’s “The Lion

King,” which once again sold out its entire four week run at the Opera House, with over 80,000 patrons enthralled by this spectacle, and, at the same time, being exposed to the Opera House and its many other offerings. The Detroit Opera House calendar also included myriad comedians, concerts, fundraisers, meetings, weddings, graduations, and a week-long series of meetings and award ceremonies conducted by the Quicken Loans family of companies. Outreach initiatives continued to be an important part of reaching new audiences, and included the Family Discovery Series, sponsored by Metro Parent magazine; Access Opera and Dance for young professionals, sponsored by Pridesource Media Group and the Masco Foundation; special events conducted to support National Opera Week; and the Metropolitan Opera regional auditions. As always, touring programs and summer camps, presented by the Michigan Opera Theatre Department of Community Programs were paramount to reaching children and adults throughout the region (see page 17). Dance Education programs continued to grow and help foster new talent and audiences. The Detroit Opera House Parking Center was the site for several television commercial shoots and we added a new tenant on the main floor of the retail building: Lambert Edwards Associates, a public relations firm with offices in Detroit and Grand Rapids.

Mission StatementThe mission of Michigan Opera Theatre is to be one of the outstanding opera companies in the United States and, in particular, to serve as a major cultural resource to the City of Detroit and the State of Michigan.

The Detroit Opera House and Dance Theatre of Harlem collaborated to host a Dance Theatre of Harlem

Summer Intensive. Over 60 children ages 8 – 16 studied with faculty from the Company for a period of three weeks. The Intensive culminated in a final performance on the stage attended by family and friends of the participants. Eisenhower Dance Ensemble also initiated a summer Intensive with teachers from the Company teaching a one-week intensive workshop in modern and jazz dance. Throughout the season, dance students had an excellent opportunity to learn from professionals. Master classes were offered by each company including New York City Ballet, BalletMet Columbus, Eisenhower Dance Ensemble, Dance Theatre of Harlem and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. These master dance classes are free with a ticket to the corresponding performance and were held in the Margo V. Cohen Center for Dance. Ballet Renaissance and Inner City Dance Scope continue to call the Detroit Opera house their home for dance training. They both hold regular classes for students of all ages during the evenings and weekends. A favorite of Detroit audiences, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater continued their outreach efforts by sending professional teaching artists to Spain Elementary and Middle School in Detroit to share their Revelations: An Interdisciplinary Approach residency program. Students explored ways to express themselves through dance while learning different subjects such as social studies, music and language arts. The sign of success was the outpouring of tears and gratitude when the artists had to leave their one-week program. The Margo V. Cohen Center for Dance was also host to auditions for summer programs around the country including Alvin Ailey, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Interlochen, Gelsey Kirkland Dance Intensive, Boston Ballet and of course our own Nutcracker auditions held every year in September. Over 150 children auditioned for a chance to perform on the Opera House stage with a premier professional ballet company.

The Michigan Opera Theatre Children’s Chorus continues to become an

important resource in music education and young audience development for Michigan Opera Theatre. The 2012-13 Season marked the MOTCC’s 6th season and the inauguration of our new Preparatory Chorus bringing the total MOTCC roster to 80 talented young singers from five southeast Michigan counties. Over 100 singers auditioned for positions in the MOTCC with thirty singers selected for the Preparatory Chorus and 50 for the Principal Chorus. We added two new staff members: Annie Klark as the Director of the Preparatory Chorus and John Pavik as the Preparatory Accompanist.

Description of Preparatory Chorus: The Preparatory Chorus is a comprehensive program of vocal training and performance protocol to 8-11 year old children and prepare them for possible advancement into the Principal Chorus. The Preparatory Chorus rehearses once a week on Mondays for 1 ½ hours. They learn to sing in unison and in two part harmonies, with and without accompaniment. They will learn how to read, study and memorize music. A portion of the rehearsal is devoted to include sight reading, terminology, and learning key musical concepts. They explore text and music interpretation and receive exposure to foreign languages through repertoire study. Correct posture, diction, tone placement and breath management is taught and developed so that participants will be able to sing accurately with good breath control and resonance throughout the singing ranges. The preparatory chorus participates each season in “A Winter Fantasy” concert, on the main stage prior to the MOTCC principal chorus’ main stage opera, and other performance opportunities in the community that are appropriate for their age group. After orientation in early September, regular Monday rehearsals were held from September through April, with additional

Saturday rehearsals during the months of January-May. In October, the Principal Chorus performed for the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council (MMSDC) Annual Awards Dinner at the Detroit Institute of Arts. In November, they performed for the Detroit Tree Lighting Ceremony at Campus Martius and in MOT’s production of “The Nutcracker.” In December, the MOTCC held their annual concert/fundraiser “A Winter Fantasy” which helped to raise funds to support the program. This marked the premiere performance of the Preparatory Chorus. The MOTCC Principal Chorus was also invited to return to Ida, Michigan to sing in the Christmas in Ida Festival. The Spring 2013 opera performance was Malcolm Williamson’s “The Happy Prince,” directed by Michael Yashinsky and conducted by Dianna Hochella. Since the theme of “The Happy Prince” was the

importance of charity, one of our objectives for the year was to connect MOTCC chorister’s to the meaning of the opera. With help from parent mentors, we provided them opportunities to perform service work in their community. The children volunteered in several events including a performance at The Meer Family Senior Living Apartments on the West Bloomfield Jewish Community Center Campus, the Annual Cass Community Social Services’ Christmas Parade Breakfast to benefit programs for mothers and children, a performance at 1st Annual Advent by Candlelight at Christ Church, Cass Community Social Services (making sandwiches and singing for the patrons), and a workshop at Vista Maria. MOTCC also sponsored a canned food drive the day of the dress rehearsal with all proceeds donated to Cass Community Social Services. In addition to the MOTCC public performances, the chorus has been featured in many local newspapers, and numerous television and radio broadcasts. Mitch Albom interviewed one of our singers and parents and his production team filmed portions of “The Happy Prince” for a future broadcast on Channel 4’s “The Heart of Detroit.” In May, Twannette Nash was hired to replace Megan Warzecha as Chorus Administrator. We also began our auditions for the 2013-14 season.

The Department of Community Programs has been working in partnership with Matrix Theater

in Southwest Detroit, offering accessible workshops to disabled working artists, musicians, story-tellers, actors and dancers. Most of the workshops take place in the Chrysler Black Box Theater at the Ford Center for Arts and Learning, Detroit Opera House. So far, Teaching Artists have included a percussionist; a poet, and a film and discussion about and with people with Autism. Response to the workshops has been very strong. The program is being funded by the Michigan Disability Rights Coalition. The Department of Community Programs has been accepting private students in voice, piano and music composition. By the end of 2013, the department has five teachers giving lessons. So if you have an interested youngster, a gifted high school student, a talented college music major needing extra coaching, or would like to expand your own horizons, call Karen V. DiChiera to explore lessons. A portion of the student fee is returned to MOT. Prices have a wide variance. The summer program, Learning at the Opera House, lost some students because of the financial problems that hit our area and country. However, some young people were very interested in summer study. We let some of the most gifted youngsters attend for substantially lower prices, or for free. Create and Perform performers, writers, choreographers and composers had a fine time improvising some scary skits and some very nice original songs. They re-set the Italian folk tale — Stregga Nona (Grandmother Witch) to the delight of the audience, and ended with patriotic songs. The Gilbert and Sullivan workshop featured the operetta Princess Ida, a rarely done piecethat deserves far more attention. The comedy involves the confusion of who is falling in or out of love with whom, plus a problem with an ancient curse, plus the necessity of either doing one bad deed a day or succumbing to an agonizing death, all under the threat that refusal to commit a crime is tantamount to suicide,

but suicide is itself a crime! Somehow, everything comes to a confusing, but satisfying, denouement, performed on our main stage, over four hundred people attended and loved the show. Opera Workshop featured an all women group of students. This was not the choice of the instructors, but rather simply, that’s who applied for the workshop. The opera scenes were perfectly chosen with delightful scenes from well known and not-so-well known examples from the French, Italian, American and British repertoire. The workshop ended with the heart — wrenching finale of Francis Poulenc’s opera, Dialogues des Carmeliites, a true story of how an entire convent of nuns were guillotined during the French Revolution. A photo exhibit by our intergenerational and multi-family students, who took our class, Lens On The City, was greatly admired by the Opera Camp audience during intermission and following the opera performances. Likewise, the Lens on the City students enjoyed hearing the performances of the opera scenes by our talented bevy of young future opera hopefuls. Even with lower numbers of students, the enthusiasm of students, teachers and instructors hailed 2012 Learning at the Opera House programs a success. Also, during the last fiscal year, our touring company of the Department of Community Programs performed in seventy two locations across Michigan. Some old favorites were “Footsteps to Freedom” during Black History Month; works for children by Seymour Barab including “The Pied Piper” and “Little Red Riding Hood;” our popular Broadway Revue, which delights a wide range of Music Lovers and our Senior Citizen performances that are funded by the Mary Thompson Foundation. One unusual highlight performance was our Broadway

Revue that took place at Camp Grayling for the surrounding Homeowners Association! Rebecca C. Blaesser, a teacher from Munger Elementary/Middle Scool in Detroit excitedly wrote: I want to thank you for the wonderful program we saw today! My Kindergartners were enthralled with the performance and later did an exceptional job of retelling the story. I appreciate having the opportunity to bring my class to the production of “The Pied Piper of Hamlin.” Seeing and hearing an opera at my school may be the only exposure they have. Maybe it will inspire my students to go to other performances. Keep up the great work! We discovered a delightful new piece by composer Ron Perera and librettist Constance Congdon based on the award-winning book by children’s author Sam Swope, called “The Araboolies Of Liberty Street.” With a message of accepting diversity, some children are invited to be part of the performance. Children learn about embracing all kinds of people and even have the chance to play “Oola-Boolie-Ball” by pretending to toss an invisible ball back and forth with the performers! Our touring company also taught workshops about vocal health, careers in opera and musical theater, acting, and movement, which reached elementary, middle and high school classes in many different schools. Several lectures were given to adult groups about the opera seasons, opera in general, and lectures about various topics pertaining to the arts, history and the lives and works of various composers including women. In all, our touring season reached over 20,000 people.

Michigan Opera Theatre (MOT) extends its

appreciation to the many generous individuals, corporations and foundations, as well as the State of Michigan and the National Endowment for the Arts, who contributed more than $3.3 million to support the organization’s annual operations during FY 2013. In Fiscal Year 2013, MOT’s corporate support continued to increase as the economy continued to recover from the recession. Ford Motor Company sponsored the Fall Opera Season for the 16th consecutive year of performances at the Detroit Opera House (DOH), and General Motors Corporation was the sponsor of the Spring Season. Chrysler Corporation’s Fiat division was the title sponsor of BravoBravo! for the second consecutive year. The Michigan Opera Theatre Board is very appreciative of the auto companies’ support of the organization and the cultural community in general. The industry has always demonstrated extraordinary civic responsibility, even during difficult economies. Each Fall, the Opera Season is heralded by the annual, elegant Opera Ball in October prior to the opening production. However, the MOT Board of Directors and Administration decided to forego the gala in 2012 because of the extreme generosity of many donors in response to the Preserve the Legacy Campaign. Many of these donors also contributed annual gifts, and the Board wanted to recognize their additional contributions by not scheduling the fundraiser. Many people in our MOT Family helped to make the year successful by donating their time, talent and resources in a variety of ways. Following are highlights of some of these activities.

In September, the annual General Director’s Circle (GDC) thank you party was held at Leon & Lulu, the eclectic furniture, arts and gift store in Clawson. Owners Mary Liz Curtin and her husband Stephen Scannell donated the space and contributed 10% of all sales during the event to MOT. GDC Chair Barbara Frankel and Co-Chair Dodie David were on hand to greet and thank each GDC member personally. Barbara and Dodie worked diligently throughout the year to ensure that members renewed their annual gifts and were properly acknowledged. During the opera season they acted as hostesses in the GDC Lounge welcoming new and long-standing members. We are

very grateful for their efforts and those of the GDC Committee. We also thank Monica Moffat and Pat McGuire for the design, editing and publishing of the semi-annual GDC Newsletter. During the year, many other events occurred under the auspices of the Michigan Opera Theatre Volunteer Association (MOTVA). Through the direction of President Terry Shea, more than 500 volunteers served as ushers, ambassadors, office and Boutique workers, Opera League

volunteers, Dance Council, Divas/Divos, Young Professionals and Community Programs members. The group’s collective fundraising initiatives for Fiscal 2013 resulted in gross revenues of $451,000. In August 2012, Floy and Lee Barthel continued their tradition of hosting an Ice Cream Social at their home. Guests enjoyed ice cream treats and an exhibit of classic cars. This annual event is a favorite among returning guests, and Floy and Lee have a great time welcoming everyone and exhibiting their beautiful classic cars. In October, a small committee of volunteers from the Young Professionals group and MOT/DOH staff held the third annual Halloween event – Haunted in the

House. The party attracted more than 600 costumed guests and raised more than $25,000. The Divas/Divos, chaired by Helen Rowe, helped visiting artists feel at home during their stay in Detroit by chauffeuring them to different activities such as shopping, dinners, etc. They also hosted four “Meet and Greet” receptions so that the cast could meet the staff and volunteers. The Opera League, under the chairmanship of Gloria Clark and Dodie David, hosted

the opening night dinners for the Fall and Spring opera seasons. Drawing an average of 90 guests, the dinners provided attendees the opportunity to hear David DiChiera’s remarks on the evening’s performance. The Dance Council, chaired by Cheryl McIlhon, hosted events connected with the visiting dance companies during the season. In October, the Council celebrated the opening night of New York City Ballet MOVES with a dinner and afterglow chaired by Gloria Clark and Amy Jidov. The volunteers once again offered special children’s activities prior to performances of The Nutcracker. The Eisenhower Dance Ensemble Red Hot and Blue afterglow in January 2013 was chaired by Susie Boynton, and the return of Dance Theatre of Harlem was celebrated with a chic afterglow chaired by Betty Brooks and Carolyn Demps. The Young OperaHouse Council group, chaired by Dominic Arellano, hosted the 14th annual fundraiser BravoBravo! in June, which once again attracted a sold out crowd of 2,700 people of all ages and raised more than $300,000. Chrysler/Fiat was the lead sponsor for the second consecutive year of this fundraiser entitled “Black and White.” Guests enjoyed offerings from 40 of the best restaurants and entertainment venues in metropolitan Detroit. Michigan Opera

Theatre recognizes and appreciates the commitment, energy and creativity of the three event co-chairs, Jeanine Fields, Amy Kaminski and William Robinson, their hardworking committee and MOT/DOH staff who contributed many hours to make the event such an overwhelming success. Volunteer activities in Fiscal Year 2013

ended with a summer event “Party on the River” at the end of June. Chaired by Annette Marchesi, the party took place at the Roostertail gazebo on the river. Paula Tutman from WDIV/Channel 4 was the Honorary Chair. The beautiful night on the water under the stars was a lovely harbinger of the coming summer months. The event and silent auction

raised more than $10,000. We extend our warm appreciation to MOT Trustee and MOTVA Board Member Dodie David who has been donating her time since 2009 to serve as the company’s Human Resources Consultant. She continued her service to administration and staff as an impartial sounding board. Dodie is a very qualified HR professional and has helped the company in many ways, including the negotiation of employment benefits with vendors and instituting formal policies and updating the employee manual. She is an impartial sounding board for the staff and management, and we are grateful for her many hours of support, Michigan Opera Theatre is sincerely appreciative of all of the volunteers who donate so much of their time and talent. The company has always enjoyed the privilege of volunteers who serve in many areas and also save the organization countless dollars in expenses each year. They truly are the best ambassadors into the community for MOT because their energy and support are genuine.

Ensuring the Future

Imagine a gift that outlives you—that touches future generations in your absence—to experience and enjoy the world of opera.

That’s the goal of the Avanti Society, Michigan Opera Theatre’s Planned Gift Recognition Program. The Avanti Society represents a designated group of friends of Michigan Opera Theatre who have made plans to include the organization in their estate plans—whether by will, trust, insurance, or life income arrangement. Membership in the Avanti Society is open to all. Members of the Avanti Society receive a beautifully designed lapel pin, recognition at the annual Avanti Evening and invitations to special events and performances, and are listed as members in our program books throughout each season.

AN AVANTI FOR TOMORROW The growth of Michigan Opera Theatre’s permanent Endowment Fund ensures the growth and future vitality of one of the region’s greatest cultural assets. You are invited to create your own legacy—your Avanti—through Michigan Opera Theatre. You may use the attached confidential reply card to indicate your gift, or contact Kim-Lan Trinh at (313) 237-3408 to discuss gift options that may benefit you, your heirs and Michigan Opera Theatre.
