Philosophy St John’s Lutheran congregation recognizes that the prime responsibility for training children

rests with the parents. Parents begin and nurture this training by regularly and faithfully

attending worship and Family Discipleship Hour, and participating daily in family devotions,

Bible study, and prayer.

St John’s Lutheran Church has developed an effective ministry to support and nurture spiritual

growth. Worship, the sacraments, and Bible study are a vital part of our program for the

edification of the entire family. Paul writes in Ephesians 4:16, “From Him, the whole body,

joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love.”

To help parents provide a Christian education for their children, St John’s West Bend maintains a

Christian Early Childhood Center, an Elementary School and a Middle School. Our education

curriculum integrates the Christian faith throughout our academic studies and includes daily

Christian Education and Discipleship classes, devotions, and worship experiences. It is the all-

day Christian setting that gives the children the opportunity to practice their Christianity while

developing thinking and academic skills, knowledge, and communication tools.

We believe that Christian education is a lifelong process of growing in faith through God’s

Word. As God’s Word is taught, the Holy Spirit actively works to produce faith in the heart of

the hearer. Therefore, our entire curriculum is centered on God’s powerful Word. We believe

that an education apart from Christ is incomplete.

Discipleship is most effective when we work in partnership with the family to develop the child

spiritually, socially, physically, emotionally, and intellectually. Parents and teachers working

together provide the best form of Christian education.

It is our prayer and purposeful goal that all students of St. John’s Lutheran School grow in

Christian discipleship, stewardship, and citizenship.

We realize that ours is an awesome responsibility. God has called us with a holy calling and has

entrusted into our hands the care and instruction of His precious lambs, your children. With His help we

pledge to do our best in assisting you to carry out His command to “bring up the child in the way that he

should go.” We sincerely desire to work cooperatively with you in this endeavor.

2017-18 Parent School Covenant

We believe that the prime responsibility for training children to be disciples, or

followers of Christ rests with the parents. To support and assist the family, St. John’s

maintains an educational ministry which provides Christ Centered quality education

for ages 6 weeks through 8 th grade.

What parents can expect from St. John’s Lutheran School:

Parents can expect that St. John’s faculty and staff will model Christ in all its

student/parent contacts.

Parents can expect that St. John’s Lutheran School, in accordance with its mission,

philosophy, and guiding principles, will strive to maintain a safe, secure, and welcoming

environment for their children.

Parents can expect regular communications about their children from the school: fall

conference; grade reports, mid-quarter reports (3-8), other “early warning” messages,

including voice mails and/or e-mails. Parents can expect assessments of their children,

thoughtfully and carefully presented in writing and in person.

Parents can expect to be informed immediately if there is a serious disciplinary infraction

involving their children.

Parents can expect timely notification if a child is encountering academic difficulties and

parents will be kept informed of follow-up plans, actions, and strategies.

What St. John’s Lutheran School can expect from parents:

St. John’s can expect parents to maintain close contact with the Word of God

through regular and faithful worship attendance, Bible study, and family

devotions.

St. John’s can expect that parents will support and endorse the philosophy, mission, and

guiding principles of our school; that they will attend school events and activities,

including parent conferences; and that parents will support and take part in the activities

and work of the PPO Parent Partner Organization.

St. John’s can expect that parents will model discipleship as they support, encourage and

help order the lives of their children in accordance with the Word of God holding them

accountable for inappropriate behavior.

St. John’s Lutheran School can expect parents to make timely payments of tuition and

other expenses.

St. John’s can expect parents to register dissatisfactions and concerns in a responsible and

fair way; to use the guidelines found in the handbook; to give everyone the benefit of the

doubt before judgment; and to seek a collaborative solution to problems in accordance

with God’s will as written in Matthew 18; 1 John 1:8-2:1; 1 Peter 3:8,9.

Accreditation St. John’s is accredited by National Lutheran School Accrediting Association (NSLA). In order

to maintain accreditation, St. John’s must demonstrate continued school improvement in its

annual accreditation report. Every five years an extensive self-study is conducted and an outside

team visits the school for an objective evaluation. Data from the needs assessment is used to

write a school improvement plan and set the course for ongoing and continuous school

improvement. Our school was granted five year full accreditation in August of 2015.

Achievement Tests Students will be assessed and evaluated twice a year using NWEA Online Measures of

Academic Progress (MAP) testing. MAP tests are web based and adaptive. Questions are

generated based on the previous question’s response for each student. As a result, the test is

truly individualized. Additional information can be found at www.nwea.org. Just type in the

word “parent” and several options will appear. Assessment data will provide classroom teachers

with invaluable information to individualize education for your child, and parents will be able to

monitor their child’s academic progress from year to year. The Fountas and Pinnell reading

assessment is given annually in the spring.

Admission and Enrollment Policies As a ministry of St. John’s Lutheran Church, St. John’s Lutheran School provides Christian

education for children kindergarten through grade eight.

Enrollment is open to all families in the West Bend and surrounding area who seek a Christian

Education for their children. Parents must understand that we uphold Lutheran doctrine in our

teachings. To better understand Lutheran doctrine, parents are encouraged to participate in the

Promises of Grace class offered throughout the year. It is our intention to welcome and

encourage school families to join our church and share in our entire church ministry.

St. John’s Lutheran School must receive the transfer records of newly enrolled students within

the 30-day probationary enrollment period.

Children entering kindergarten must have attained the age of five, on or before September 1.

Health examinations are recommended for all new students and all students entering

Kindergarten. Physical exams are required for all fifth and seventh grade students participating in

interscholastic activities. All students are expected to have all current immunizations as required

by the State of Wisconsin.

St. John’s admits students of any race, color, or national or ethnic origin to all the rights,

privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the

school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, or national or ethnic origin in

administration of its educational policies, and athletic and other school administered programs.

Enrollment Procedures

New Families

The enrollment process begins with an interview with the Administrator to help new families

become acquainted with the mission of St. John’s. After the interview, families desiring to enroll

must complete a registration form, available online, and return it to the school office after

January 15. All enrollments are subject to a thirty day probationary period during which time

either the faculty or the family may determine that enrollment is not in the best interest of either

the student or the class.

Returning Families

Returning students from kindergarten through grade eight are to register by January 15 for the

new school year. Families not completing the enrollment process during this period forfeit their

guarantee of a spot in the class and later enrollment is subject to the class size policy. All tuition

and fees from the previous year must be paid in full before the child is allowed to attend a new

school year.

Non Discrimination Policy

St. John’s Lutheran Elementary and Middle School admits students of any race, color, national

and ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made

available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national

and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship

programs, athletic and other school-administered programs.

Athletic Program Maximization of effort and participation are the key components of our athletic program. Our

well-rounded athletic program includes physical conditioning, knowledge, practice of

fundamentals, and competition in soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, softball, and

track. While competition and winning attitudes are an integral part of our program, participation

is the primary emphasis. Students in grades five through eight are eligible for our extra-

curricular athletic program which includes soccer; cross country; volleyball; basketball; and

track.

Mr. Rose, our athletic director, is in charge of our entire athletic program with the assistance of

Mr. and Mrs. Young. Parents who desire to volunteer to coach need to contact Mr. Rose. The

volunteer coaches deserve the respect and appreciation of our students and parents. These

volunteers are not professionally trained, but are interested in the opportunities that a sports

program offers to children. Mr. Rose will provide a coach’s handbook and each coach is

required to attend a Coach’s Clinic held at the beginning of each athletic season. This handbook

explains the philosophy of our athletic program, our expectations and the details of schedules

and responsibilities. Parents interested in assisting with our athletic program should contact Mr.

Rose.

In keeping with Matthew 18, whenever parents have a concern with a coach, the concern should

be brought to the coach first before bringing it to the athletic director or the Administrator.

Athletic Eligibility

Only students in good academic and behavioral standing will be allowed to participate in St.

John’s athletic programs. Students are considered to be ineligible if they earn two D’s or one F as

their overall grade in the core subjects (Math, Social Studies, RLA, Science, Spanish, Music, and

Christian Education). Grades will be checked weekly on Fridays. If a student is deemed

ineligible, the ineligible period will begin Monday and remain in effect until reevaluation the

following Friday. If eligibility requirements are still not met, the student’s ineligible status will

continue. The Friday the student is found the be back in good standing, he/she will be

immediately reinstated. Please remember grades will only be checked on Fridays.

A student who does not meet the grade point or grade requirements may remain eligible as a

result of an individual variance granted by the faculty members involved.

Attendance The State of Wisconsin requires regular school attendance. Parents are to call the school office

by 8:15 a.m. if their child will not be attending. If students are going to be absent for reasons

other than illness, the school office and your child’s teacher should receive written notification in

advance of the absence.

Students are not permitted to leave the school grounds during the school day unless accompanied

by their parent/guardian, or a parent/guardian designated adult. Parents picking up children

during the day must come to the office to sign their child out.

When students have practices or games scheduled after school, parents are not to assume the

school is responsible for child care activities before the practice or game begins. Therefore we

ask that parents make arrangements for the supervision of their children during these time

periods. Parents are encouraged to restrict their children from walking the streets or the hallways.

While regular attendance at school is very important, we recognize that there will be times when

parents need to have their children miss school. If this is necessary, students are responsible for

making up any work that they have missed within two weeks upon their return.

Teachers are not expected to provide work ahead of time nor are they expected to re-teach

subject matter when parents choose to have their children miss school. We strongly

encourage parents to keep these kinds of absences to a minimum.

Students will not be permitted to participate in extra-curricular events if they are absent from

school the afternoon of the event. However, students who are absent for doctor appointments

and special emergencies may participate at the discretion of the school administration.

Bullying and Harassment Policies We are committed to making our school a safe and caring place for all students to grow as God’s

dear children. In response to God’s love for us and by His power, we will treat each other with

Christian love and respect and we refuse to tolerate bullying at school.

At St John’s Lutheran School we acknowledge that children have been entrusted to our care.

With that care comes the responsibility of providing a safe environment so that physical, social,

emotional, intellectual and spiritual growth can take place. The mandate to care for one another

comes from our Lord Jesus. Jesus’ commands us to love God and to love one another.

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all

your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your

neighbor as yourself.’” Matthew 22:37-39

At the heart of following Jesus command is a commitment by the faculty and staff of St John’s

Lutheran School to model the love that Jesus has shown to us, to validate the pain caused by

bullying behavior(s) and to take immediate action in stopping the bullying behavior(s).

Because of the grace shown to us in Christ Jesus, we embrace a conflict resolution model that

emphasizes accepting responsibility for our actions and forgiving one another. Character

education focusing on God pleasing character traits is routinely taught and nurtured.

Bullying Policy

Bullying is defined as “any written or verbal expression, or physical act or gesture, or pattern

thereof, that is intended to cause distress upon one or more students in the school, on school

grounds, or at school activities, sanctioned events or in transit to activities or events.”

Bullying is aggressive behavior that is intentional and involves an imbalance of power or

strength. Typically, it is repeated over time. A child who is being bullied has a hard time

defending him or herself.

“Bullying is the conscious, willful and deliberately hostile activity intended to harm someone

else for pleasure.”

“A student is being bullied or victimized when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to

negative actions on the part of one or more other students or adults.”

“If your child’s feelings have been hurt, this does not necessarily mean that they have been

bullied”

It is the policy of St. John’s Lutheran School to prohibit any conduct that constitutes bullying or

sexual harassment of any kind and, as appropriate, to contact the authorities in any situation

involving this conduct.

Bullying or sexual harassment in any form toward any student by another student, employee,

non-employee, volunteer, or parent will not be tolerated. Students who believe they have been, or

are being bullied or sexually harassed will inform the person that the behavior must stop

immediately, and that it will be reported.

Parents have the right and the responsibility to monitor their own, as well as all of their child’s

electronic communication. Please report all instances of electronic predatory communication to a

pastor or the Administrator. In the event of inappropriate electronic communication, school

authorities will strive to provide the family of the cyberbully with a downloaded copy of the

harmful online material and advise them of their potential personal liability if they are unwilling

or unable to end the harmful activities.

Bullying may include but is not limited to...

1. slyly kicking, hitting, pinching, punching, tripping, etc.

2. verbal threats.

3. furtively teasing or calling names.

4. leaving someone out, or spreading rumors about them.

5. using e-mail, social networking sites, game sites, telephone, or text messages in or out of

school that create a sense of power over another student.

Conflict is normal. Bullying is not normal conflict. Use the chart below to see the difference

between conflict and bullying. When someone makes a conscious choice to hurt, humiliate,

harass, make fun of, degrade, or put down another human being the individual being targeted

becomes a victim.

Students who believe they have seen or experienced any form of harassment or bullying shall

report, in confidence, the conduct to the principal, a pastor, or a trusted adult. Any staff member

who observes harassment or bullying shall stop it and report it to the Administrator. The

Administrator will investigate the incident, and may present the findings and recommendations

to the Senior Pastor. Action could include the termination of employment or enrollment.

Harassment Policy

St. John’s Lutheran Church and School is committed to providing a learning environment that is

free from harassment in any form. Harassment of any student or employee by any other student

or employee is prohibited. The church and school will treat allegations of harassment seriously,

and will review and investigate such allegations in a prompt, confidential, and thorough manner.

A charge of harassment shall not, in and of itself, create the presumption of wrongdoing.

However, substantiated acts of harassment will result in disciplinary action up to and including

dismissal. Students found to have made false or frivolous charges will also be subject to

disciplinary action, up to and including expulsion.

Harassment occurs when an individual is subjected to treatment or an environment which is

hostile or intimidating because of a person’s race, creed, color, national origin, physical

disability, or gender. Harassment can occur any time and includes, but is not limited to any or all

of the following:

Verbal/Digital/Cellular/Cyber/Electronic Harassment: Derogatory comments or jokes with

intent to harass; threatening or obscene words spoken to another person or through digital means,

such as texts, posts, emails. Retaliation for the reporting of harassment or participation in an

investigation.

Physical Harassment: Unwanted physical touching, contact, assault, deliberate impeding or

blocking movements or any intimidating interference with normal movement.

Visual Harassment: Publicly displaying or making obscene gestures with the intent to harass;

derogatory or inflammatory posters, cartoons, written words or drawings.

Sexual Harassment: Includes unwelcome sexual advances, unwelcome requests for sexual

favors, and unwelcome verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.

Reporting of harassment: Students or employees who feel aggrieved because of conduct that

may constitute harassment should directly inform the person engaging in such conduct that such

conduct is offensive and must stop. If students or employees do not feel comfortable doing this

or are unable to do so, they shall direct their complaint to the Administrator , a teacher, or any

pastor of the congregation.

Consequences

Students who engage in any act of bullying or harassment are subject to appropriate disciplinary

action, which may include classroom discipline, discipline by the Administrator via Office

Referrals, and/or referral to law enforcement authorities. The severity and pattern, if any, of the

bullying or harassment shall be taken into consideration when disciplinary decisions are made.

Chapel Our school family joins together to worship the Lord each Wednesday morning at 8:10 a.m.

Family and friends are always welcome to join us for worship. Students take an active role in

chapel presentations under the direction of the pastors and teachers. Chapel offerings are

collected to support a quarterly mission project. Students are required to wear their St.

John’s chapel shirt or St. John’s Spiritwear Polo every Wednesday. Appropriate dress for

young men is slacks or nice jeans and for young ladies a skirt, slacks, or nice jeans. This attire

will apply throughout the day. No Shorts or capris. In this way we will honor our Lord.

Curriculum Students at St. John’s Lutheran School receive a well-rounded elementary and middle school

curriculum grounded in God’s Word. Our teachers have been specifically trained to integrate the

Christian faith in all areas of the curriculum. A written curriculum guide is available in the

Administrator’s office. Our curriculum is reviewed and updated regularly. St. John’s is

continuing the process of mapping and aligning our curriculum to State and National Standards.

Custody Notification The school will respect the rights of parents/legal guardians with legal custody by observing any

restrictions as to custody and physical placement as required by a court order, when a copy of the

order is given to the school. It is the responsibility of the parent(s) with legal custody to provide

the school administrator with a copy of the most recent court order if restricted access to student

records is requested.

Parents/guardians with legal custody, except those who have been denied periods of physical

placement under state statutes, have the right to view the child’s school records, receive school

program reports and all school mailings, attend parent teacher conferences, attend school

functions, and visit the child briefly at school.

It is the responsibility of the parent who does not have regular physical placement of the student

to inform the school office of his/her name, address, email, and phone number if he/she wishes to

be consulted regarding his/her child or wishes to be placed on the school mailing and email list.

School procedure provides that only custodial parents with the right of physical placement have

the right to remove the child from school. If more than one parent/guardian has the right of

physical placement, it is the responsibility of such parents/guardians to provide the school with

written documentation (court order or agreement signed by both parents) explaining the

arrangement for physical placement.

Definitions for this policy:

Legal custody - the right and responsibility to make major decisions concerning the child.

Major decisions- include but are not limited to decisions regarding choice of school or religion;

consent to marry, enter military service, and obtain driver’s license; and authorization of health

care.

Joint legal custody - both parties share legal custody and neither party’s legal rights are superior

except as a court may specifically order.

Discipline Policy “For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant; later it yields the peaceful

fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” Hebrews 12:11.

Core Beliefs

We believe that each of our students is created by God, redeemed by Jesus, and called by the

Holy Spirit to be a child of God. As such, each child is a unique and special gift from God to his

or her parents. Parents allow St. John’s Lutheran School to assist in the nurturing and educating

of their children during the school day.

Discipline, in the true sense, refers to methods of modeling character and of teaching self-control

and acceptable behavior; in fact the word “discipline” comes from the word “disciple”. Our

school staff dedicates itself to this set of core beliefs as a guide for dealing with student

discipline. These core beliefs guide our individual classroom plans and consequences. Just as

every child is unique, every discipline situation is unique in nature. It is our prayer that God

would provide each of us with the wisdom to apply these core beliefs. In the event that we

operate in ways that appear inconsistent with these core beliefs, please contact the appropriate

staff member.

Every attempt will be made to maintain the dignity and self respect of both the student

and the teacher.

Students will be given opportunities to make decisions and live with the consequences, be

they good or bad.

Students will be guided and expected to solve their problems, or the problems they create,

without creating problems for anyone else.

Behavior will be handled with natural or logical consequences, be they good or bad.

Misbehavior will be viewed as an opportunity for individual problem solving and

preparation for the real world.

Behavior

The Ten Commandments are the norm for Christian living. God has given them to us for a

threefold purpose: a curb to restrain us from sin, a mirror to show us our own sinfulness, and a

guide to show us how to lead a life pleasing to Him.

As disciples of Christ, our behavior will be God-pleasing. Jesus summarized the Law this way:

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind,” and

also, “Love your neighbor as yourself” students of St. John’s Lutheran School are expected to:

* Put God first in everything.

* Treat God and His Word with respect so that His Name is honored. This means no

cursing, swearing, lying, deceiving, or involvement in satanic arts. This also means that

God’s Word is gladly heard and learned.

* Honor those whom God has placed over them including parents, teachers, pastors. As an

act of honoring God, students will follow classroom rules and come prepared to learn.

* Help, support, and respect their fellow students and neighbors as encouraged in

Philippians 4:8. “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right,

whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or

praiseworthy - think about such things.” There are to be no putdowns, vulgar or

inappropriate talk or actions, cheating, or fighting.

* Respect the facilities. There is no eating in the school, church, or on the playground with

the exception of morning break, lunch, and special occasions. Gum is not allowed in

school. All garbage from snacks and lunch is to be placed in waste containers.

* Act safely.

Our Lord has provided for us in Scripture a model for Christian discipline that is expressed in

His Law and Gospel. We seek, in our approach to discipline, to nurture the child by calling

him/her to repentance and offering loving acceptance to the child even when we disapprove of a

behavior so that he/she may grow in wisdom, faith, and godliness. Our goals are to encourage

the recognition of sin and its consequences for self and others, to provide opportunity for

repentance and contrition (God’s Law), and to offer forgiveness and acceptance to the repentant

child (God’s Gospel), and ultimately to encourage a greater measure of self-discipline and a

stronger sense of responsibility in each child.

This means that classroom management will be based on our school core values and the

following statements:

St. John’s Lutheran school implements “Truth Works” a four step decision making and problem

solving process for helping children make the right Godly choices. The foundation of this

process is that God and His Word are truth and that God’s Will is best for us.

Step 1: Consider the Choice

Step 2: Compare it to God

Step 3: Commit to God’s Way

Step 4: Count on God’s love to protect and provide

Classroom Discipline

Each teacher establishes his/her own classroom rules and expectations. These are shared with

students in the classroom and with parents at orientation.

Grades K-2 Each K-2 classroom implements its own unique positive reinforcement system to

promote positive behavior. Initial breaking of a class or school rule will be handled through

verbal warnings. A second warning will result in a tally. Tally marks will be recorded at the end

of each day on a weekly chart. Parents will be contacted if student receives excessive amount of

tallies per day or if a continuous pattern is apparent.

Grades 3-5: Initial breaking of a class or school rule will be handled through verbal warnings.

If a child chooses not to follow classroom or school rules after verbal warnings, he or she may be

asked to move to the recovery zone, which generally is a place in the classroom where students

can continue to hear and observe class instruction. The purpose is to serve as an opportunity for

the child to stop, reflect and change his or her behavioral choices. If a child is unable to recover

in a timely manner without disrupting the class, the location of the time out could range from

just outside the classroom, another teacher’s classroom or the administrator’s office. Teachers

will allow the students to return to the classroom when the student feels that he or she is ready.

Documentation will take place daily and parents will be notified if the student spends excessive

time in the recovery zone or if a continuous pattern is apparent.

These visits to the recovery zone are not considered official office visits even if the child spends

time in the administrator’s office. If a child persists in misbehavior or the behavior escalates, a

parent conference will be arranged.

Grades 6-8: An initial breaking of a class or school rule will be handled as a warning and the

teacher will write the child’s name on a clipboard kept at the front of the classroom. A second

warning will result in a Discipline Notice which will be sent via Sycamore to the parent and the

Administrator. A third warning will result in a detention to be served from 3:15-3:45 on the day

it is issued or no later than the following day. In the case of a detention, the parents will be

contacted by the teacher or the Administrator and a notice will be sent through Sycamore

requiring a parent signature. A fourth warning will result in the student being sent to the office

for an Office Referral.

Based upon teacher discretion and specific situation, teachers may send home additional Parental

Communication Forms with consequences.

Detentions

If a child is given a detention, the parent will be contacted by the teacher or administrator as

soon as possible. A detention is to be served the day it is received, or no later than the following

day; and the child will stay from 3:15-3:45.

Discipline by the Administrator- Office Referral

Trips to the office for inappropriate behavior are very serious. When a student is sent to the

office for discipline by the administrator, the teacher will prepare a written description of

behavior that resulted in a trip to the office. The administrator will personally contact a parent

to arrange a conference with the parents, teacher, and student. This conference will be held

within 24 hours of the student being sent to the office. The administrator will document the

office trip and the conference with the parents. The documentation will be kept as part of the

student’s school records. If warranted, the student will serve a suspension the first school day

following the office trip.

An Office Referral will result for the following reasons;

2 detentions in one week

4 detentions in one quarter/12 detentions in one year

Bullying- interfering with other students’ rights to an education by force, coercion, threat,

harassment, or disruption

fighting

leaving school grounds without permission

truancy

destruction or theft of school property (student will pay for any damages)

defiant or hostile acts

acts involving immoral behavior

disrespect for authority

1st OFFICE REFERRAL: Mandatory Conference with student, parents, and principal and a

minimum of one (1) day of in-school suspension.

2nd OFFICE REFERRAL: Mandatory Conference with student, parents, and principal and a

minimum of two (2) day of in-school suspension.

3rd OFFICE REFERRAL: Three (3) days out-of-school suspension

4th OFFICE REFERRAL: Administrator, Senior Pastor, parents, and designated staff will

conference to consider expulsion and termination of enrollment.

The following infractions will result in immediate notification of local law enforcement and

parents. The student will be suspended from school pending possible expulsion after a hearing.

knowingly possessing or transmitting any firearm, explosive, or any other dangerous

object or weapon of no reasonable use to the student at school.

knowingly possessing, using, transmitting, or being under the influence of any narcotic

drug, hallucinogenic drug, amphetamine, barbiturate, marijuana, alcoholic beverage,

tobacco products, or intoxicant of any kind.

Dress Code and General Appearance “You shall be my witness.” (Acts 1:8) We are constantly witnessing to others through the way

we work, play, walk, talk, and dress. Our students and staff are expected to dress in a manner

worthy of their calling as Christians. Dress can also affect the way we feel, perform, and behave.

Therefore, boys and girls are required to wear clothing that is both modest and sensible. It is felt

that all parents and students will use discretion as far as clothing is concerned. Parents are

encouraged to assist their student with appropriate dress to ensure compliance with school

standards. If the teacher and administrator feel the child’s attire is not proper, the child will be

asked to change into appropriate clothing.

Students will be well-groomed and modest in appearance. Students should be clean and free

from odor. Make-up is not allowed below fifth grade.Hair must be clean and brushed or

combed. Hairstyles must not be distracting.

Students will wear clothing appropriate for a Christian setting. Clothing must be clean, free from

holes or tears. Students must comply with the following:

Students must have tennis shoes for P.E. class.

T-shirts with drug, alcoholic, skulls, or suggestive pictures or language will not be

allowed.

Shoes and sandals must have a strap around the heel and fit properly- NO FLIP FLOPS.

Jewelry should be appropriate for the Christian classroom, i.e. nothing sacrilegious; nose

rings, chains, body piercings are not allowed.

Hats may not be worn inside the school facility.

Specific to the Elementary School (K-5)

Skirts, dresses, shorts, or skorts are to be modest length, use fingertip length as a guide.

Students in grades K-5 may wear wind pants/coordinated athletic pants and jackets, but

sweat pants are not allowed.

Spaghetti or thin strapped tops are not allowed. Modest sleeveless tops and dresses are

permitted during hot weather.

Specific to Middle School

Students must have tennis shoes and a change of clothes for P.E. classes.

Clothing should fit appropriately and not be too tight or revealing.

Students may not wear midriff bearing or low cut shirts.

No draw string/athletic/yoga pants or shorts.

Spaghetti or thin strapped tops are not allowed. Sleeveless tops and dresses must have a

strap the width of three fingers or wider.

The length of dresses, skirts, shorts, and skorts must be no shorter than three fingers

width above the top of the knee.

Leggings are considered undergarments rather than pants. They must be covered by a

shirt, skirt, dress, pair of shorts, or skort that meets the length requirements listed in the

rule above.

Chapel Dress Code

Students are required to wear their St. John’s chapel shirt or St. John’s Spiritwear Polo every

Wednesday. Appropriate dress for young men is slacks or nice jeans and for young ladies a

skirt, slacks, or nice jeans. This attire will apply throughout the day. No Shorts or capris.

Due Process Policy When a parent has a grievance against a member of the faculty, staff, or another parent, the

parent is encouraged to follow the procedure found in Matthew 18. The parent will be directed

to first voice the grievance in person to the individual in question.

If after a personal conference, the parent feels the problem has not been resolved, the parent can

present the matter in writing to the administrator in a private conference.

If after following the first two steps, the matter still cannot be resolved, the matter can be

presented in writing to the Senior Pastor. A follow up conversation will be scheduled.

Electronic Devices and Cell Phones Students are not allowed to use the following electronic devices on school grounds between 7:30

a.m. – 3:00 p.m.: cell phones, video game players, radios, cd players, dvd players, or the like.

Such items will be confiscated by school officials and may be picked up by the parents only.

Electronic devices may be used if permission is granted by the classroom teacher. St. John’s

Lutheran School is not responsible for any damage or loss of electronic devices brought to

school.

Emergency Care Parents are notified whenever a student becomes sick or is injured. In the event that parents

cannot be reached, the parent designated care-taker will be contacted. If neither the parent nor

the designated care-taker can be reached, the child will remain at school, apart from the

classroom, under supervision, until the parent or designated person can be reached. It is very

important that designated care taker information, as well as other emergency phone number

information be kept up-to-date. In the event of a serious emergency, the school may contact the

family physician listed on the emergency form or the nearest emergency care facility. The cost

of any emergency care is a parental responsibility.

Field Trips Field trips are designed to expand the realm of education beyond the school grounds. They are

considered part of the curriculum and participation is expected. Parents are notified in writing

prior to all field trips. When field trips are scheduled, a specific permission form will be sent

home. The permission slip must be signed by a parent or guardian and returned prior to the field

trip.

We depend on many volunteers throughout our program. Teachers may contact parents to

volunteer as field trip chaperones and drivers. Volunteer drivers are required to have a validation

form on file before transporting St. John’s students and the vehicle must have seating that meets

all state regulations. Forms are available in the office for each event. Drivers must be at least 21

years old to transport students. Parents, please be willing to chaperone whenever possible.

Chaperones are not to bring young children unless specifically invited by the teacher. The cost

of transportation and chaperone participation in field trips will be shared by the entire class. If

additional parents desire to participate in a field trip they need to receive permission from the

teacher and are responsible for the fees. Parents who cannot afford a field trip are to contact the

principal regarding financial assistance. Non-parental chaperones must be approved by the

classroom teacher prior to the day of the event.

Outdoor Education- 7th Grade Educational Fall Activity

Each year our seventh graders enjoy a three day camping experience in conjunction with

neighboring Lutheran schools. The expense of the Fall event is the responsibility of the parents.

To help with budgeting for this event, the cost is approximately $150. Details will be furnished

to seventh grade families in the fall.

Annual 7th and 8th grade School Class Trip

Each year our 7th and 8th graders will take a joint class trip in late April. This trip’s location will

rotate between Washington D.C. and the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Ky. St. John’s 7th and

8th grade students and their parents are encouraged to attend the end of year trip to Washington

D.C. The Kentucky Trip will be for students only. Numerous fund raising opportunities are

provided to help defray costs.

Fund Raising through PPO, Parent Partnership Organization We encourage our families to support our school by participating in our annual fundraisers.

These include two PPO food item sales, our three athletic tournaments, and the St. John’s

auction.

Monies from these fundraisers are used to provide non-budgeted items including: field trip

bussing; over $6,000 in athletic fees; $200.00 per classroom to spend on room and learning

enhancements; teacher appreciation events; social events and receptions including our Back to

School Social, Faithhaven Family Bonfires; Graduation; and refreshments at our concerts and

musical.

Grading Academic progress is recorded and distributed on a written quarterly report card. Grades 3-8

will use on online grading program accessible to families at any time. Mid quarter reports will be

available electronically. Parents will be provided with log-in information in August.

Students in grades K-2 receive standards based report cards each quarter assessing their progress

in academic and social growth.

Students in grades 3-5 receive mid-quarter and quarter reports using the following scale:

Homework Homework is an important part of the learning process for students at St. John’s. Students are

expected to complete their homework neatly, accurately, and in a timely manner. Generally the

amount of homework increases with the child’s age, and the general rule of thumb is 10 minutes

per grade level (i.e. 1st grade – 10 minutes, 2nd grade – 20 minutes, 3rd grade – 30 minutes, etc.).

Studying for tests, working on special projects, not using classroom time effectively, or some

other reason may affect the amount of time spent on any one night. If a student is regularly

spending two or three hours per night on homework, this may be a cause for concern, and parents

should notify the classroom teacher. There are numerous factors that may contribute to lengthy

homework sessions, and those matters are best discussed between the parent and teacher. High

quality work is the expectation of all students enrolled in St. John’s.

Honor Students The St. John’s Lutheran School high honor roll is made up of students in grades six through eight

who complete a quarter with a 3.75 or higher grade point average on a 4 point scale. Students

who achieve a grade point average between 3.5 – 3.75 qualify for the honor roll. Honor students

receive a certificate during a designated chapel service and their names are submitted for

publication in the local newspaper.

Hot Lunch and Milk Hot lunch, including milk, may be ordered daily. Milk may also be purchased by those who

bring their own lunches and for those who want milk during the morning break. Our hot lunches

are prepared by the West Bend Public School. The menu is the same as the public school

elementary menu and will be posted monthly via Sycamore.

School Lunch Meal Charge Policy

St. John’s – West Bend contracts annually with the West Bend School District to provide hot

lunch through the National School Lunch program. Each meal offers balanced options for your

child, and includes milk in the meal price. Prices for the 2017-18 school year are:

We require that families pre-pay for their students lunches throughout the year. This can be done

by cash, check, or credit card in the school office. Lunch accounts are kept current week to week

so that you may monitor your balances in our student information system, Sycamore.

At times, families do fall behind on keeping current with their lunch accounts. When a negative

balance is incurred on your account, please do your best to bring it current as soon as possible.

At the end of the school year, families who still have a negative balance will not receive their

child’s report card and awards until the account balance is $0.

Federal Lunch Program

Free or reduced price lunches are available for families who meet the eligibility guidelines under

the National School Lunch Program. Application forms are available in the office and at

registration.

Insurance St. John’s Lutheran Church and School does not assume responsibility for financial expenses

incurred due to injuries incurred during school related events. Therefore families are encouraged

to purchase their own health and accident insurance.

Library Procedures Lower grade students may check out 2 books and/or magazines for a one week period. Upper

grade students may check out 5 books for four weeks. When no Librarian is present, students are

to use the self-checkout list on the clipboard to sign out their books. Returned books and

magazines should be dropped off in the book return slot in the library or given to the librarian.

They are not to be returned directly to the shelves. The librarian reserves the right to restrict

check outs for students with overdue materials. We do not charge fines for library materials

turned in late, but lost or damaged books or magazines will be assessed at replacement cost.

Lockers Lockers are provided for our middle school students and are the property of St. John’s Lutheran

School. No defacing will be tolerated and parents will be liable for any damage. Students may

not apply stickers or labels of any sort. Because the lockers are the property of St. John’s, the

school maintains the right to open or inspect the locker at any time with or without the presence

of the student. Homeroom teachers will hold regular locker inspections to maintain cleanliness.

Lost or damaged locks will be replaced and the student will be charged $10.00 for replacement.

Medication All medications are administered according to the Wisconsin Legislation Act 160. Parents whose

children need medication administered at school must submit the required medical authorization

forms and bring the medication to the office in person in the original container. Designated

school personnel will administer the medication. No medication shall be administered unless the

Health Release and Medication Authorization Form has been submitted. Students with inhalers

are required to submit the above mentioned form before using their inhalers at school.

Non-prescription medication shall be administered only with written instructions and permission

from the student’s parent or guardian. Non-prescription medication must be provided in the

original container.

Prescription medication shall be administered only with written instructions, permission from the

student’s parent or guardian, permission from the physician, and a properly labeled container

houses the medication. The label shall include:

a. The name of the student (first and last)

b. The name of the medication

c. The name of the prescribing physician

d. The dosage to be given

e. The effective date

f. Directions for administration.

Music and Performance Opportunities Band Program

Students in grades five through eight may participate in our band program. Instruction is

provided without charge during the regular school day. Parents are responsible for the cost of the

instrument and lesson books. Students are responsible for completing work assigned during their

band instruction and teachers are not responsible for re-teaching lessons when a student is

involved in a band lesson. Lessons are scheduled on a revolving basis so the same class period is

not missed. Those who take lessons are expected to participate in one of the school’s performing

ensembles.

Lambs Choir

Lambs, an extra-curricular choral group, is available to students in grades 2-4 throughout the

school year and to students in grade 1 the second semester. Students meet with Mrs. Esther

Hesse on Thursdays from 3:00 – 3:45 p.m. in the music room. The Lambs sing approximately

six times per year for church services and concerts. Participants who accumulate more than two

unexcused absences for performances will not be able to continue in Lambs. Absences are

excused at the discretion of the director. An announcement identifying the start of the Lambs

season will be made soon after the start of the school year.

Hallelujah Singers

Hallelujah Singers is a choir for students in grades 5-8. The choir will rehearse on Friday

mornings from 8:30am-8:55am. Hallelujah Singers will perform approximately four times during

the school year at concerts and church services.

Handbell Choir

Handbell Choir will be an elective choice for students in grades 5-8. The Handbell Choir will

rehearse Wednesday mornings from 7:20am-7:50am. Students participating in the Handbell

choir will perform several times throughout the school year at concerts and church services.

Spring Musical

Students in grades 1 – 5 perform a spring musical annually under the direction of the music

teacher.

Singing at St. John’s Lutheran Church

K – 8th grade students are scheduled to participate in Sunday worship services. It is expected that

every student participate when scheduled. Participation in scheduled performances is a

responsibility that comes with enrollment in St. John’s Lutheran School. Anyone who knows in

advance that they absolutely must miss a scheduled performance is requested to provide a written

explanation to the music director before the performance. Those who cannot participate because

of illness are expected to notify their teacher, the choir director or the administrator as soon as

possible.

Parent-Teacher Conferences Parent-teacher conferences may be held anytime at the request of a parent or teacher. Formal

conferences will be scheduled at the end of the first quarter on November 1 and 2, 2017. Parents

are expected to participate in this conference. In the event of an unexpected scheduling conflict,

parents are to call the classroom teacher to reschedule the conference. Scheduling will be

handled through GoogleDocs in a tiered set up. The first tier will be for a one week period and

will be open to families with multiple children. The second tier will be a one week period for

remaining families. GoogleDocs will then be locked down to prevent accidental changes. A

printed handout of the schedule will go home. Parents are encouraged to set up conferences at

any time during the school year by contacting their child’s teacher.

Parent Partnership Organization- PPO Every school parent is a member of our Parent Partnership Organization. The purpose of the

PPO is to develop a close relationship between the school and home for the benefit of our

students. Parents are expected to take an active part in the functions and projects of the PPO

such as helping host our volleyball and basketball tournaments and participating in fall and

spring food sales. Parents interested in serving on the PPO Leadership Team should contact the

school office or members of the PPO Leadership Team listed below.

Physical Examinations Physical exams are recommended of all students entering our kindergarten program for the first

time, grade five, and all new students who may be entering at other levels. An athletic physical

exam is required of all fifth and seventh grade athletes participating in interscholastic activities

and all new student athletes to St. John’s.

Recess All students are expected to go outside for fresh air and physical activity during their designated

recess time. If the temperature is below 0° Fahrenheit and/or the wind chill is below -10°

Fahrenheit students will remain inside for recess. During winter months, lower grade students are

expected to wear coats, hats, gloves/mittens, snow pants, and boots.

17. Typically, room parents help with holiday parties, their students’ teachers’ birthday parties,

and auction projects. They will also serve as liasions and communications between the

classroom parents and the PPO.

Full Day Students 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

School Newsletters The Eagle’s Nest, our school newsletter, is published electronically on the first and 15th school

day of each month. Since this is an important communication link between the school and the

home, take time to read it. Articles for publication must be received in the office by Wednesday

noon. The administrator reserves the right to make the final decision regarding what is

published. The newsletter will be sent to families via Sycamore and is available on our website at

www.stjohnsschoolwestbend.org.

Classroom teachers will post weekly announcements and updates via Sycamore, our online

communication and management service.

School Supplies Parents are responsible for purchasing school supplies for their children. Bibles, hymnals,

catechisms, assignment books, recorders, headphones and pencil grips are available for purchase

through the school office. Supply lists are available at local merchants and the school website.

Scrip Program Parents may purchase Scrip online to help offset their tuition costs. In this program, participating

merchants give back a percentage of your purchases which are then applied to your tuition

account. The deposits are made three times per year (Sept.; January; April). Scrip earnings may

only be used for tuition payments. Unused scrip rebates will revert to the scholarship program if

a family withdraws from St. John’s or may be designated to another family. More information is

located on our website and brochures are available in the office.

Security For the safety of our students, all entry doors are locked during the school day. Guests may enter

via the west door (6th Ave.) during school hours. If your child is in ½ day Kindergarten, you may

enter at the north door when picking up her/him. Security cameras monitor the entrances.

Tardies Students are to be in their classrooms by 8:00 a.m. Those who arrive after 8:00 a.m. are tardy and

must go to the office before going to the classroom. Parents who know their children will be late

should call the office. Excessive tardies may result in a detention.

Telephone Use School phones are reserved for school business. Parents should call their children only in cases

of extreme emergency. Students needing to place a phone call may request permission to do so

in the office. Students will not be permitted to use the school phones to arrange after school or

over-night visits with classmates.

Transportation, Drop off and Pick Up, and Bus Service

Bus Service

West Bend provides bus transportation for our K - 8 students who live in the designated busing

areas. Parents are encouraged to call the Johnson Bus Company, 334-3146, to determine their

eligibility for busing.

In the afternoon, buses load students along 6th Avenue. All bus students line up at the front

entrance of the school and enter the buses only at the direction of the bus monitor. Guests may

not ride the bus without a written note for the bus driver. Once students board the bus the

Johnson Bus Company is responsible for them until they are dropped off. The Johnson Bus

Company communicates behavior problems to the school in writing and the school forwards the

information to the parents. Students who do not follow the directions of the driver may lose their

bus privileges.

While on the bus, students are expected to conduct themselves with respect for authority and

consideration for fellow riders. Students with repeated offenses may lose their bus privileges.

Morning Drop Off

Parents are to drop off their children at the east doors near the gym. These are the ONLY doors

that will be unlocked at 7:30 a.m. Students are allowed to enter the building and go directly to

the gym where they will be supervised by a teacher until the 7:50 a.m. bell, unless they are

involved in extracurricular activities such as band or hand bell choir.

At 7:50 a.m. students may enter the building at the north and west doors and go directly to their

classrooms. The north and west doors will not be opened until 7:50 a.m. If a parent wants to

accompany their child into the school building, he or she MUST park in the marked parking

spots to the north of the ECC and school which is the church parking lot. DO NOT leave your

car parked or unattended in the circle drives.

Afternoon Car Pickup

Student pick up is between 3:00-3:15. Students are to be picked up on the east side of the

school, and will be walked to the designated classroom spot along the drive by their classroom

teachers. Elementary students will not be dismissed anywhere other than from a teacher’s

supervision at the designated spot. For Pick-up, parents will enter into the one way pick-up drive

from 5th street and proceed to their child’s designated class pick-up area. The enclosed map will

identify their location and the area will be designated by signs. Please have the oldest child in

your family meet you with your youngest for pick-up. Please drive with EXTREME caution.

Parents wishing to meet their children at their classrooms MUST park in the marked parking

spots in front of the north entrance of the Early Childhood Center. If you need to enter the

school, you must park your car in the designated parking spots. Do Not leave your car parked or

unattended in the circle drive.

Parents of Middle School students may park along the curb of fifth street alongside Sonshine

Community Park, and your child or children will be allowed to walk to your car.

Students not picked up by 3:15 will be taken to their classroom until their parent or approved

adult picks them up.

Tuition Tuition, if not paid in advance, is due in twelve equal month payments on the first day of each

month beginning July 1 and ending June 1. Tuition rates for 2017-2018 are listed below.

Full Day 1 child $3,517.00

1/2 Day Kindergarten $1,758.00

2 full day $6,683.00

3 full day $8,459.00

4 or more $8,459.00

Fees $50.00 per student technology use fee

Tuition for Partial Year Attendance

Students who attend a partial year will be charged monthly tuition for each month of attendance

whether it be a full month or a partial month.

Delinquent Financial Accounts

Tuition is to be paid on a regular, monthly basis, July – June. Students whose families have

delinquent accounts may not attend classes the following school year until the past due account

is paid in full. Parents are encouraged to pay through monthly electronic withdrawals.

Paperwork is available at the school office or at the church business office.

Student records will not be released until tuition is paid in full.

Tuition Scholarship Grants Tuition grants are available for families in need of assistance. Confidential Financial Analysis is

used to determine a family’s need. Grant applications are available in the school office. Parents

are responsible for paying the small processing fee when they submit their applications. All

tuition grant applications remain confidential and the Educational Grants, Scholarships, and

Partnerships Ministry Team make all final grant determinations. These grants are made possible

through the generous gifts of friends of St. John’s who desire to make a Christian education

possible for every student. If you would like to help support this program contact the school

office. The following provisions have been adopted by the Educational Grants, Scholarships,

and Partnerships Ministry Team:

All applications will be kept confidential.

All grants are subject to the availability of funds.

No grants will be given for prior year debts.

Prayerfully reflect upon your own first fruit offerings.

Submit the St. John’s Lutheran Tuition Grant Application by May 30, 2018, by following

the 2017-2018 Scholarship Online Application instructions: www.cfslogin.com The

school number needed for the application is 43077.

Families receiving tuition grants are required to attend a fall session of Financial Peace

University. If you have already graduated from St. John’s Financial Peace University

course, you are to contact Craig Toerpe to schedule a meeting.

Families receiving tuition grants will be required to utilize the Scrip program to assist

with their tuition expenses. Scrip credit will be posted to your account quarterly.

Families who submit applications can expect communication regarding grants during the first

week of June. Tuition grants will be awarded per semester based upon the completion of the

provisions mentioned above.

Visitors We extend an open invitation to all parents to visit our school. Please check in at the school

office upon arrival. We ask that you arrange visits in advance.

Weather Related Cancellations When the West Bend Public School system cancels school because of inclement weather, St.

John’s will be closed also. Watch Channel 4 TV. Closings are also posted on our website and

by text or email via Sycamore.

Worship Church is the place that God has chosen to visit us and to provide for our spiritual needs, namely

forgiveness, absolution, and strengthening through His Word and Sacraments. He has set this

time aside for us to praise and thank Him and to fellowship and care for one another. We

encourage and expect our students and their families to regularly attend worship because we

know it is God-pleasing and beneficial to the entire Christian community. If you do not have a

church home, we invite you to join us for worship on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.; on Sunday at 8:00

a.m., 9:30 a.m., or 11:00 a.m.; or on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. Active participation in worship

and our Family Discipleship Hour is expected of our school families. Parents are encouraged to

take to heart God’s Word that they are to disciple their children and set a Godly example for

them.

Worship Attendance Worship attendance will be recorded each Monday by the homeroom teacher. Out of love and

concern for our Christian brothers and sisters and because God calls us to be accountable, and in

worship, attendance will be monitored by the staff. Follow up conversations will take place

when appropriate.
