Faribault Public Schools strives to empower, engage, and energize all students through its commitment to a quality education and creating an effective learning environment. This action plan outlines our goals and strategies to improve student learning. The plan is intended to serve as a foundational document that aligns educational initiatives from pre-kindergarten to post high school graduation. The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) requires this report. Our World’s Best Workforce plan will highlight the following areas.

FPS will decrease the proficiency gap in mathematics between the Non-Free/Reduced Price (Non-FRP) and Free/Reduced Price (FRP) student groups from 31.8% in 2016 to 27.8% in 2018.

In 2017-2018, 85% of four and five year olds at Falcon’s Nest Preschool within McKinley Early Childhood Center (MECC) will increase their letter and word knowledge rating to “building-middle” or higher as measured by Language and Literacy Development (LLD9) on the Desired Results Developmental Profile.

English Learner

The Department of EL Services administers programs for English Language Learners with the goal of developing English language proficiency and achieving state content-area standards, while simultaneously valuing their native languages and cultural backgrounds.

Mission: The Faribault Public Schools' programs for English learners strives to enable students of limited English proficiency to develop their intellectual, cultural, and self-concept skills necessary for success at Faribault Public Schools and for their future. The students will accomplish this development in an atmosphere of understanding, cooperation, and support.

Demographic Data EL students in our district - 854 SLIFE Students - 160 Somali Speakers - 537 Spanish Speakers – 303 Languages in the EL program – 9 different languages 63% of EL Students are First Generation Refugees 62% growth in EL population over the last 10 years

Faribault Public Schools strive to ensure all students are career and college ready by graduation. Proficiency in four key areas, of college and career readiness is desired: cognitive strategies, content knowledge, learning skills and techniques, transition knowledge and skills.

Faribault Public Schools recognizes the uniqueness of each student and attempts to meet individual educational needs on an ongoing basis.

The mission of the Faribault Public School District Professional Development Program is to inspire leadership, promote continual learning, and reflect on effective practices to enhance student achievement through collegially planned learning opportunities.

Goals

Curriculum: To provide comprehensive staff development opportunities in all areas that support best practice in curriculum, instruction and assessment. Throughout the curriculum cycle, we are aligning outcomes to the state or national standards.

Academic Progress: To provide opportunities to learn, apply, and analyze various data systems available within the district (MCA, MAPS, DIBELS, Etc.) to guide instruction to meet the needs of all learners.

Technology: To provide a culture of innovation to integrate technology into all curricular areas for student outcomes aligned to 21st century skills and beyond.

Equity and Excellence: To increase awareness and understanding of biases that serve as barriers to achievement including bullying, mental health and socio-economic status.

Teacher Growth and Development: To advance the Faribault Teacher Growth and Development Plan and to continue our probationary teacher mentor model using the Danielson Framework for Effective Teaching, which is designed to enhance the professional practice of all teachers to increase student achievement.

Glossary 9th Grade Academy A program design to reduce academic failures,

narrow the achievement gap, increase student connectedness, grow leaders, and improve student behavior.

ADSIS – Alternative Delivery of Specialized Instruction

Provided instructional support to assist students who need additional academic or behavioral support to succeed in general education.

AVID- Advancement Via Individual Determination

A system which prepares students for success in high school, college, and career, especially students traditionally underrepresented in higher education.

CAST –College Ambitions Start Today Structured afterschool program that focuses on students’ paths to college.

Collaborative Inquiry Teachers work together to identify common challenges, analyze relevant data and test out instructional approaches.

DIBELS – Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills

A set of procedures and measures for assessing the acquisition of early literacy skills.

DRDP –Desired Results Developmental Profile A developmental continuum from early infancy to kindergarten entry.

FAST – Families and Schools Together Structured parent education program offered in multiple languages at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

HAPP- Homework Assistance with Peer Programming

Structured integration program for Newcomer EL students through cross- cultural peer tutoring.

Multi-Tiered System of Supports An umbrella framework that includes Response to Intervention (RTI) and Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) frameworks.

A framework for organizing instruction and sheltering language in the classroom through the use of SIOP’s eight components.

STEAM 656 –Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math

High quality, hands on afterschool program that encompass experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math to improve academic and behavior performance for targeted students.

TITLE I Provides assistance to children from low income families to help ensure that students meet challenging state academic standards.

TITLE III 417 and 442 Federal dollars provided to support language acquisition (417) for EL students and for immigrant students (442).
