Demographics

Demographics Summary

Smith Middle School is located in southwest Killeen, near the largest military base in the United States, Fort Hood. We focus on providing quality educationfor all of our students with instruction delivered by highly qualified teachers in rigorous and challenging classrooms.

Our curriculum is implemented through a framework and the lenses of the TEKS Resource System, ensuring that the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge andSkills) are implemented in all subjects. Instruction is primarily provided in the classroom where a variety of methods are utilized to ensure success for all.We have numerous initiatives in place to supplement and enhance student learning in various settings, to include an extended day intervention program, aswell as Saturday School sessions designed to address hard-to-learn standards. Assessments provide data for teachers primarily to determine student need, growth, and potential. This data is gathered in a number of ways, including (but not limited to) teacher-made tests, state assessments, teacher observations, common assessments, and Math and Reading MAP assessments. Student data is used by the instructional staff to determine programs and progress, inaddition to making decisions for implementation of various initiatives.

The administrative leadership consists of principal, two assistant principals, two counselors, a librarian, a curriculum instructional specialist, and a campustechnologist.

Student Achievement

Student Achievement Summary

Smith Middle School is a new campus within the Killeen Independent School District (KISD). Smith will use a variety of data sources to includeSTAAR test results as well as the Measure of Academic Performance (MAP) test at the beginning, middle, and end of year. This test will identify anypotential gaps in student learning as well as measure student academic growth throughout the school year.

Since Smith Middle School was not open last school year, there is no 8th grade data for Science or Social Studies, as those students have moved on to highschool.

Math Reading Approaches Masters Approaches Masters 6th grade 88% 26.60% 76.73% 25.50% 7th grade 78.86% 17.07% 67.21% 13.28% 8th grade 73.64% 17.19% 73.14% 16%

In analyzing the data from Smith students, there is a disproportionate number of students who demonstrated mastery of the grade level on STAAR, incomparison with the number of students enrolled in PreAP and TAG classes working on advanced coursework.

TAG students PreAP students Total Studentsin grade level

6th grade 27 290 449 7th grade 24 234 397 8th grade 24 221 381

Smith will strive to improve the processes above to increase student achievement.

Problem Statements Identifying Student Achievement Needs

Problem Statement 1: We need to increase STAAR scores in all areas for all grades based on data.

Problem Statement 2: TAG students do not have access to post secondary education opportunities that would provide real world application to the TEKSaddressed in current grade levels as evidenced by the low percentage of students who mastered the grade level on STAAR.

School Culture and Climate

School Culture and Climate Summary

Smith Middle School focuses on providing quality education for all of our students with instruction delivered by highly-qualified teachers in rigorous andchallenging classrooms.

Faculty and staff provide a safe school environment in a number of ways, to include being on duty at various locations around the campus, before, during, and after school. Supervision is provided at all times that students are on campus, to include extra-curricular activities at night and on weekends. All visitorsto the campus are required to check in the front office and obtain a school visitor's badge.

Additionally, we follow the district-wide classroom management framework. Smith's campus management plan is outlined the modules of building positiverelationships, establishing expectations, monitoring student behavior, and providing a system of interventions. Additionally, each teacher is required todesign a classroom management plan that is aligned with the campus and district plan which the teacher can implement in his/her own classroom.

The campus conduct committee monitors the overall results of student referrals and safety issues to determine ongoing concerns. The use of the studentidentification cards is vital for tracking and identifying students with behavioral issues. The continued focus for refining campus procedures in the commonareas of halls, stairwells, gym, outside, and cafeteria will allow for continuity within the campus environment.

School Culture and Climate Strengths

Smith Middle School celebrates the accomplishments of its students through multiple academic pep rallies that are held throughout the year. In addition, students will be celebrated for academic achievement each year. Smith supports both strong fine arts and athletics programs. In addition the faculty willimplement a "Caught Being Good" program to celebrate the positive choices made by students on a regular basis throughout the 2017-18 school year.

Smith will celebrate the diverse cultures this school year with our first multi-cultural assembly. Smith will be home to approximately 20 clubs for students tojoin. A few of the clubs may include American Sign Language, Athletics, AVID, Library, Robotics, Smith Ambassadors, and Writing club.

Staff Quality, Recruitment, and Retention Strengths

Being a life-long learner is highly regarded at Smith Middle School. Teachers consistently attend professional development opportunities in the summer andthroughout the school year. Because our school believes in the effectiveness of PLC's (professional learning communities), teachers meet within their gradelevels and departments to plan common assessments, common lessons, and review data to reflect on their practice.

In addition, the KISD mentor program provides a framework to help new teachers grow in their craft. Mentor teachers are chosen to support new teachers asthey learn the district's initiatives and systems. Classroom observations by both the mentor and new teacher lead to collegial conversations about how toimprove instruction to meet the needs of students.

Problem Statements Identifying Staff Quality, Recruitment, and Retention Needs

Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment

Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Summary

Our curriculum is delivered through a framework and the lens of the TEKS Resources, ensuring that the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) areaddressed in all subjects. Instruction is primarily provided in the classroom setting where a variety of methods are implemented to ensure success for all . Wehave numerous initiatives in place to supplement and enhance student learning in various settings, to include extended day, as well as in Saturday Schoolsessions.

Pre-AP courses provide students with an opportunity for learning that prepares students for the rigor of Advanced Placement (AP) courses in high school. Assessments provide data for teachers primarily to determine student need, growth, and potential. This data is gathered in a number of ways, to include (butnot limited to) teacher-made tests, state assessments, teacher observations, common assessments, as well as Math and Reading universal screenings.

Student data is used by the instructional staff to determine programs and progress and make decisions for implementation of various initiatives. TheResponse to Intervention (RTI) program is used to establish communication between parents and teachers when students are unsuccessful or when additionalresources are needed and revised interventions are added. The tiers of RtI increase the intensity of intervention and may determine the need for additionalservices or testing for the student in need.

Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Strengths

Tutorials: (Leopard Academy, Saturday School, after-school tutorials, Pride Time) STAAR results, common assessments, and classroom grades showresults from the implementation of these initiatives.Flexible scheduling: STAAR results are impacted by the use of flexible scheduling to strengthen tutorials and academic support groups during theschool day.Grade Level Teams (PLC): Teacher student relationships; intentionally planned grade appropriate lessons/activities; plan and implementinterdisciplinary lesson; fewer discipline referrals; enhanced communicationDepartment Professional Learning Communities (PLC): teacher lesson planning and implementation; teacher's core knowledge; teacherimplementation of curriculum; and enhanced teacher collaboration.
