Executive Director Letter

Our sincere thanks to Senator Mark Montigny for providing funding to support our Outreach Transportation Program, expanding on our computer technology program and updating our sports equipment. This helps the Boys & Girls Club to continue and expand on vital programs and services to the over 1,000 youth we serve each year.

Like the Boys & Girls Club, Sen. Montigny wants to assure that every child especially those that need us most has an equal opportunity to access quality programs in a safe environment that will assure them of a chance for a great future.

GREAT FUTURES START HERE and thanks to Sen. Montigny the future of our youth is looking bright.

Success breeds challenges, and at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater New Bedford/Wareham those successes and challenges lead the way to GREAT FUTURES.

This past year we have experienced great successes. The expansion of programs and rise in our membership, and our ability to collaborate with other entities to help expand opportunities for the youth we serve, as well as reaching out into the community to open our doors and services that go beyond our everyday commitment.

We have seen greater commitment from our youth membership to strive for greater academic attainment, expand their knowledge in the area of technology, and venture into the world of art and culture to expand their horizons and a strong commitment to lead a healthy life style through nutrition, exercise and improvement in social and emotional behavior. The very ingredients for a GREAT FUTURE.

As we move forward looking for better ways to help our youth, we also stay true to the ideals that has served our Club for 148 years. We will continue to provide a safe haven, positive adult mentors who truly have a tremendous impact on the lives of the youth we serve, a sense of belonging by all who walk through our doors and a place our kids can call home.

The challenges have been many but thanks to our donors, Board of Directors, volunteers and a dedicated staff, we have not only met those challenges we embraced them.

We hope you take as much pride in our success because once again without YOU it would not be possible. As the Executive Director it has been my life long mission to insure that our community’s most valuable resource OUR YOUTH have an opportunity for a great future. They should expect nothing less.

On behalf of the thousands of boys and girls we serve and the families that benefit from

those services, I convey my heartfelt thanks for helping us help our youth.

Club members enjoyed a 10 Week Tech Program, instructed by Jonathon Felix, and designed to teach children how to create a video game of their own. The boys and girls (aged 9-14 yrs) were provided all the material at each class and learned how to program their unique game on a laptop.

Staying fit is important at the Boys & Girls Club and Zumba is a fun way for kids to get moving and get a full body workout!

(Picture right) Santa Claus came to town to visit Club members at the 2017 annual Holiday Party and gave gift bags full of goodies to more than 200 boys and girls who attended. Many thanks to MA State Police and UMass-Dartmouth State Police & Student Organizations’ Christmas Fundraiser for donations of toys. Pizza, (donated by Dominos) and drinks (donated by Dennis Savas), and cupcakes (donated by Stop & Shop Supermarkets) were served.

Boys & Girls Club of Greater New Bedford and Wareham 2017-2018 Annual Report

Physical Fitness and sports is an important part of the Boys & Girls Club experience. Sports, fitness and recreational programs develop healthy well-being, encourage a positive use of leisure time, develop skills to manage stress, learn respect for peers, team building and nurture important social skills.

Healthy Habits is designed to incorporate healthy living and active learning that emphasizes good nutrition, regular physical activity and improving overall well-being. (pictured above)

Thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Scott Dias’ financial support Club members participated in BGC Arts Program that encourages artistic expression through drawing, painting, printmaking, collage and mixed media.

Club Happenings

UMass-Dartmouth America Reads students come to the Club on a daily basis

to work one-on-one with Club members.

Our annual Summer Fun Program is for boys and girls ages 7 to 13 years. This program is aimed at providing physical, recreational and educational activities in a safe, wholesome environment. In the above photo, Club members explore and discover amazing creatures found in their natural habitats at The Lloyd Center.

The LEGO Robotics Club at the Wareham Unit shows kids how to build and manipulate a LEGO robot device with a tablet. It also teaches boys and girls about coding and engineering needed to make the robots. Many thanks to MA Charitable Mechanics Association for fully supplying the supplies needed!

Power Hour for Academic Support Homework help is available after school for all Club youth in New Bedford and Wareham. Power Hour is an engaging homework help and tutoring program that encourages Club members at every age to become self-directed learners.

Power Hour has been credited by parents and students for making a difference in school. Youth not only complete their assignments, they are checked over by staff or volunteers to make sure it is correct and understood.
