February 17—The Vintage Vocal Quartet Vocal harmony and swing musicThe Vintage Vocal Quartet brings the big band era to life by singing while swinging on piano, guitar, bass and trumpet. The group’s repertoire is inspired by groups like Glenn Miller’s Modernaires, the Nat King Cole Trio, the Andrews Sisters, and Tommy Dorsey’s Pied Pipers, as well as singers like Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Jo Stafford. The VVQ has delighted concert audiences, lindy hoppers, and swanky private events all over New England. The four singers of the VVQ also play instruments, so they pack a big sound into a small package. They are: Taylor O’Donnell–soprano voice/piano, David Thorne Scott–alto voice/bass, Adam Gautille–Tennor voice/trumpet, and Paul Pampinella–baritone voice/guitar. If you love vocal harmony and swing music, the Vintage Vocal Quartet has your number! www.facebook.com/VintageVocalQuartet

CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES

September 24—Compositions by Former Child Prodigies3:00 PM—Yilin You, piano; Nathaniel farny, violin; shay rudolph, celloMozart: Piano Trio in B-flat Major, K502, Mendelssohn: Piano Trio #1 in D minor, Opus 49Violinist/Violist Nathaniel Farny and pianist Yilin You return to the PCA to present a beautiful program of Piano Trios. Composers W.A. Mozart and Felix Mendelssohn, despite living 50 years apart in different musical eras, had many similarities in their early lives. Both were child prodigies, both were taught piano by a parent (Mozart by his father, Mendelssohn by his mother), and sadly both died prematurely in their 30’s. These pieces were written when these grown-up child prodigies were a mature age of 30, at the height of their musical careers.

January 13—Evolution of the String Quartet4:00 PM—Andrew Eng & Angelia Cho, violins; Nathaniel Farny, viola; Shay Rudolph, celloHaydn: String Quartet in G Minor, Opus 20 #3, Mendelssohn: String Quartet in E-flat Major, Opus 12The six groundbreaking Opus 20 quartets earned Franz Joseph Haydn the title of “The Father of the String Quartet.” While string quartets had existed before this time, they generally consisted of a solo violinist with simple background accompaniment. By giving the cellist and violist more to do, the harmonies became richer and the interplay between instruments suddenly made string quartets more fun to hear and play. Opus 20 directly inspired Beethoven to write Opus 74, ‘The Harp,’ which, in turn, inspired Felix Mendelssohn’s Opus 12 String Quartet. PLeAse NoTe: THis is A sATUrDAY AfTerNooN CoNCerT.

May 20—Sonatas for Cello & Piano4:00 PM—Bonnie Anderson, piano, and Shay Rudolph, celloBeethoven: Sonata No. 3 in A Major, Chopin: Cello Sonata in G Minor, Op. 65Westford native and Piano Heritage Artistic Director Bonnie Anderson will collaborate with Chelmsford resident Shay Rudolph for a concert celebrating the magnificent sonorities of piano and cello. Ludwig van Beethoven’s A Major Cello Sonata was written at the same time as his famous Fifth Symphony. Although this piece is full of spontaneity, light, and beauty, early editions included Beethoven’s inscription, “Between Tears and Sorrow,” which imparts a bittersweet quality. This glorious sonata is the first to treat the cello as much more than just accompaniment. Frederic Chopin’s Cello Sonata was one of only 9 works written for instruments other than the piano. A novice at writing for the cello, Chopin abandoned many versions of this sonata before settling on this one. The work was said by many to be “un-Chopin-like” and polarized his fans accordingly.

ABOUT SHAY RUDOLPH, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR -New to the PCA this year, Shay Rudolph is an active freelance cellist living in Chelmsford. She is a member of the Orchestra of Indian Hill, assistant principal cellist of the New Bedford Symphony, principal cellist of the New Hampshire Philharmonic, and toured internationally with the official “Star Wars: In Concert” orchestra. Shay studied at BU College of Fine Arts, and her greatest musical passion is chamber music.

WESTFORD TEEN ARTS COUNCIL WTAC– Celebrating 18 Years of Rockin’ the PCA!If you’re a teen with an interest in music, performing, being a sound technician, or just hanging out with your friends, Westford Teen Arts Council (WTAC) is the place for you! We produce open-mic shows primarily for performers in grades 8-12 (but all are welcome). This student-run organization embraces music of all types: jazz, classical, acoustic, rock, and even spoken-word and poetry.

Our first scheduled show of the season is Friday, October 13, 7:00 to 10:00 PM Admission is $5, and snacks will be available.Check our social media sites for future show dates! We plan to have shows roughly every six weeks from October to June, with loads of opportunities for you to perform or just come and support your friends. Sometimes, however, school conflicts or other events cause us to modify our schedule. To keep up to date, find us on Facebook, (www.facebook.com/ParishWTAC), Instagram (@WestfordTeenArtsCouncil), or check the calendar on the PCA website (www.westford.org/pca).Arrival, Departure, and Pedestrian SafetyYour safety is important to us! Cars are not always alert to pedestrians in the crosswalk near the PCA, especially at night. Use the loading zone in front of the PCA for drop off and pick up. If you park, please use extra care when crossing Lincoln Street. And for the sake of maintaining a good relationship with our neighbors, please arrive and leave quietly.Chaperones NeededWe need adult chaperones for each show. Without adequate adult support, we will have to cancel events. If you are able to chaperone an entire evening, or even just hang out for a few hours, please contact one of the WTAC adult advisors (at least three days before a show, please!). Your help will ensure that this great organization can continue for our teens.Get involved! If you’re interested in performing, just bring your instrument. We have a full sound system, and can mic most anything. Vocalists, if you have backing tracks, we can plug your MP3 player into our system as well. WTAC needs sound technicians at every event. To be eligible, you must take Rick Posch’s Superior Sound Workshop. The next one is being offered on Saturday, Sept 16 at the PCA. For more details and registration information, visit www.westford.org/pca.

Our events are planned and organized by local teens. Parents, want to help out? Great! Simply contact one of these WTAC adult advisors:Kathleen Bernard 978-392-9081 / [email protected] Scanlon 978-486-3744/[email protected], follow the WTAC on Facebook! We’ll keep you up-to-date on the latest happenings!

Bell Tower Restoration FundThere’s something about a ringing bell. We ring in the New Year, we love to hear wedding bells, and the movies have taught us that ringing bells give angels wings. You may not realize this, but the PCA is home to one of the few historic bell towers in Westford, which still houses the original bell from when the building was built in 1829. And in 2017, we are ringing in our 17th year of bringing art, music and live performances to the greater Westford community.

In addition to bringing new and diverse programs to the PCA, our other mission is the care and upkeep of our beautiful, historic building. We love our building and share many fond memories of moments inside those walls with all of you. Here’s an excerpt from a note we received from a couple who recently celebrated their 50th anniversary at the PCA.

“The party was a huge success and everyone loved the PCA venue. They even commented on how lucky we were to have such beautiful artwork adorning the walls. The venue is really unsurpassed…lots of natural light, great acoustics, and extremely beautiful. It certainly deserves loving care!!”

We couldn’t agree more. Our building does deserve loving care. And that brings us back to the PCA’s bell. The bell tower is such an important part of what makes our building so unique, and it’s in desperate need of repair. In the spring of 2017, we launched a fundraiser to help defray the cost of restoring it. The initial cost estimate is $35,000 to $50,000 which, for a non-profit like the PCA, is a significant expense.

Please consider making a donation to the Bell Tower Restoration Fund. Contributors to the bell tower fund will be recognized on the PCA web site and those who donate $5,000 or more will be acknowledged on a plaque that will be permanently displayed at the PCA. You can donate online directly through the Bell Tower Restoration Fund page at: westford.org/pca

Please help us keep ringing in season after season of memorable programs at the PCA!
