LAST TIME OUT (L 95-80 vs. Troy)The Troy women’s basketball team ran past Georgia Southern, 95-80, in Sun Belt Conference action Saturday on Senior Day at Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro.Prior to the game on Saturday, Georgia Southern head coach Kip Drown and the Eagle administration and coaching staff honored its three senior student-athletes - Alexis Foulks, Trellanie English-Lurry and Jakayvea Akins - along with student manager Trauna Williams in a pre-game ceremony. When the game got underway, Troy ended the first quarter on a 9-3 run to take a 19-15 lead heading into the second. A layup from the Eagles’ Tatum Barber tied the game up at 35-all, but the Trojans scored the next six points over a minute stretch and parlayed that into a 44-40 halftime lead. Nakol Franks led all scorers at the break with 14 points, including four three-pointers, which puts her in the Top 10 single-season three-point list at Georgia South-ern with 51.In the second half, the Eagles cut the lead to just three points on two occasions, but Troy maintained its advantage to the end of the third period, leading 70-64. The Trojans then used an 11-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to build an 88-73 lead with 4:13 left and pull away for the double-digit victory.Franks led three Eagles in double digits on the day with 18 points, while Alexis Brown chipped in 16 points off the bench. Amira Atwater added nine assists. Of the seniors, Foulks scored a career-high 17 points with four steals while Akins had eight and English-Lurry had five with a pair of steals.

LOOKING FOR THE UPSETGeorgia Southern enters the 2017-18 Sun Belt Conference Championships on a six-game losing streak, but there are other reasons why the Eagles are feeling optimistic they might be able to spring the upset in the first round of the tournament on Tuesday. Counting the Eagles’ last win, a 75-45 victory over UL Monroe on Feb. 8 - the largest margin of victory for the Eagles in a Sun Belt contest - Georgia Southern is averaging 62.1 ppg, compared to just 54 ppg in the previous 22 games. GS is also shooting 34.8 percent over its last seven, compraed to 32.1 percent previously.

CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT HISTORYGeorgia Southern’s conference tournament history began in 1985-86, when the Eagles played in the NSWAC, the New South Women’s Athletic Conference that would later become the Trans-American Athletic Conference, and later the Atlantic Sun. The Eagles made the move to the Southern Conference in 1992, where Georgia Southern stayed until joining the Sun Belt Conference in 2014. Here is a look at the Eagles’ conference tournament history:

ATWATER ASSISTING AWAYSophomore guard Amira Atwater’s school-record 13 assists in the Eagles’ 73-68 win over UT Arlington on Jan. 27 didn’t exactly come out of nowhere. As a freshman in 2016-17, Atwater had six games with four or more assists while serving as the backup point guard to senior Alexis Sams. Locked in a preseason battle with teammate Jakayvea Akins for the starting point guard spot, Atwater continued to get better, tying her career high of six assists four separate occasions in 2017-18 before the breakout performance against UTA. The Douglasville, Ga., native currently ranks third in the Sun Belt in assists per game overall (4.1 apg) and fourth in Sun Belt-only games (4.6 apg). She has 114 assists this season, becoming the first Georgia Southern women’s basketball player to reach 100 assists in a season since Carolyn Whitney had 104 in the 2006-07 campaign. She needs seven assists to crack the single-season Top 10 chart, as both Danna Simpson (2000-01) and Denise Primeaux (1994-95) are each tied for 10th with 121 assists.

EAGLES ON THE CHARTSIn addition to Amira Atwater’s assist numbers, several other Eagles have found themselves on the Georgia Southern women’s basketball charts this season. Sophomore Nakol Franks has knocked down 51 three-pointers, tying for 10th-most in a single season in school history with Carolyn Whitney (2009-10), while her 161 three-point attempts are the 10th-most. Franks is also in line to record the top single-season free throw shooting performance as she has hit 52-of-57 free throws for 91.2 percent - if she can record 60 free throws made on the season. The school record is cur-rently held by Jamie Navarro, who shot 87.8 percent in 2009-10 (115-131). Senior Alexis Foulks has notched 61 career blocked shots in her four-year career, good for 10th all-time in Eagles history, and with one more block added to her 28 this season, she can crack the top 10 single-season chart as well.

RELATIVELY NEW TO THE BIG EASYGeorgia Southern’s trip to New Orleans for the 2016-17 Sun Belt Conference tournament last year was the first trip to the Big Easy for the Eagles in the history of women’s basketball. The Eagles have played both Tulane (2-0 all-time) and New Orleans (0-2 all-time), but either in Statesboro or neutral site games.

ALL ABOUT THE THREEIn 2016-17, the Georgia Southern women’s basketball team set a new school record by hitting 220 three-point-ers, blasting past the previous school record of 192 threes, set during the 2010-11 season. The Eagles returned three players for 2017-18 who hit 20 or more threes - Alexis Brown, who led the Sun Belt in three-point percentage at 47.6 percent (30-of-63); Nakol Franks (26) and Alexis Foulks (22). This year has been a different story for the Eagles from beyond the arc. The Eagles have made 180 three-pointers through 29 games (6.2 per), well below last season’s av-erage of 7.3 three-pointers per game. Georgia Southern is also shooting 27.8 percent from beyond the arc, below last season’s 30.8 percent. The Eagles have seen a slight uptick in both three pointers made per game (6.8 per) and three-point percentage (28.6) since Sun Belt Confer-ence play began 18 games ago. Nakol Franks (51 threes) leads the Eagles in three-pointers made, while Trellanie English-Lurry has the best three-point percentage on the team at 36.1 percent, ranking 10th in the Sun Belt.

POINTS AT A PREMIUMThe Eagles’ struggles shooting the basketball (32.8 fg%, currently ranked 348th in DI out of 349 teams) have resulted in low-scoring affairs for Georgia Southern. Three times this season, the Eagles have been held below the 40-point threshhold, including the 34-point output on January 6 against Sun Belt leader Little Rock. The 34 points were tied for the fourth-fewest in school history and were the second-fewest in a conference game, below a 32-point output at SoCon foe Chattanooga on Jan. 5, 2004. In the 45-year history of GS women’s basketball, the Eagles have been held to 40 points or fewer 21 times.

TAKING THE LEADEight different Eagles have been the leading scorer in Georgia Southern’s 29 games so far in 2017-18, showing the balance that head coach Kip Drown talked about at the beginning of the season. Nakol Franks has been the leading scorer in the most games (12) and has the top scoring output so far this year with her 21 points vs. Arkansas State on Jan. 4. Alexis Brown has started to assert herself as possibly the Eagles’ primary scorer, reaching double digits in 10 of her last 15 games, being the leading scorer in six of them. Rhein Beamon has led five times, while Trellanie English-Lurry has led three times. Hailey Dias-Allen has also led three times, along with Amira Atwater and Alexis Foulks. Sarah Moore has been the leading scorer once for the Eagles this season.

FINDING A SCORERHeading into the Sun Belt tournament, Georgia Southern is still lacking that go-to scorer that can help a team win games down the stretch. The Eagles’ leading scorers are sophomores Nakol Franks (8.7 ppg) and Alexis Brown (8.7 ppg). Both players need to have huge games in the tournament to prevent something that hasn’t happened in the 44-year history of Georgia Southern women’s basketball - a leading scorer that does not average double figures. The lowest scoring average to lead the team was Meredyth Frye’s 10.4 points per game during the 2011-12 campaign.

EAGLES IN THE SUN BELT AND NATIONAL RANKINGSGeorgia Southern has been one of the best teams in the league and in the nation in not sending opponents to the free throw line. The Eagles are second in the Sun Belt in fewest fouls per game (15.7), ranking 90th in the nation. Gerogia Southern is also second in the league in fewest fouls (456) and ranks 68th in that category in the nation. As a result, opponents are shooting just 17.1 free throws per game. The Eagles also have risen to second in the Sun Belt in total steals (270) and steals per game (9.3) and are positive in turnover ratio (+0.9). On the other side, the Eagles are in the bottom 20 nationally in rebounding margin (-9.6, 341st out of 349 schools) and their 32.8 field goal percentage ranks 12th in the Sun Belt and 348th among 349 teams in NCAA Division I.

HEAD COACH DROWN

kipDROWNHead Coach • Third SeasonSpringfield, MO • Southwest Missouri (1977)

Kip Drown begins his third season at the helm of the Georgia Southern women’s basketball program. Introduced as the seventh head women’s bas-ketball coach in Georgia Southern history on March 31, 2015 by Athletic Direc-tor Tom Kleinlein, Drown enters his 30th season as a collegiate head coach, and his third for the Eagles, heading into the 2017-18 campaign.

Drown and the Eagles showed marked improvement in his second sea-son in Statesboro, going 13-17 overall and 9-9 in the Sun Belt Conference - im-provements of six overall and five league wins from his first season in 2015-16. The nine league wins were the most for an Eagle women’s basketball team since the 2010-11 season. Georgia Southern earned the sixth seed in the Sun Belt tournament and made its first appearance in the league’s postseason. Se-niors Patrice Butler and Angel McGowan each earned All-Conference honors on the year and the team enjoyed the friendly confines of Hanner Fieldhouse, going 8-6 on the season at home.

In his first season in Statesboro in 2015-16, Drown’s team doubled its Sun Belt Conference win total from the previous year, going 7-22 overall and 4-16 in league action including wins over rivals Georgia State and Appalachian State. Drown’s Eagles went 1-1 in overtime games and had eight of their conference losses decide by 10 or fewer points, including five by five or fewer points.

Prior to Georgia Southern, Drown was one of the most successful coaches in the history of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) as well as NCAA Division II. He departed the Division II ranks 15th amongst active coach-es at that level for wins and is currently 38th all-time in NCAA Division II for wins.

Drown led the ThunderWolves of CSU-Pueblo to an overall record of 195-100 (.661) during his tenure which included four RMAC championships (2006, 2008, 2009, and 2010) as well as the 2007 RMAC Western Division crown. Drown also led the program to its first seven NCAA Division II National Tourna-ment appearances (2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2015).

Prior to his successful run in Pueblo, Colo., Drown coached for four sea-sons at NCAA Division II institution Grand Canyon University where he went 40-69 (.367). While at the helm of the Antelopes’ program, Drown led the pro-gram back to a winning record (16-12) during his third season (2003-04) as well as a bid into the NCAA Division II Tournament. In just four years, he took the team from only four wins in the year before he arrived to a 16-12 record in 2003-04, earning California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Coach of the Year Honors for his efforts.

Before heading out west, Drown was the head women’s basketball coach at then NAIA program Georgia Southwestern State in Americus, Ga. In his sev-en years as the head skipper of the Hurricanes he posted a record of 151-70 (.683) and took five of his teams to the NAIA National Tournament. His teams were also frequently ranked in the nation’s top-25.

In five of his seven seasons in Americus, Drown’s teams posted at least 20 wins including his last four seasons when the ‘Canes went 92-40 (.697). Drown and the Hurricanes won the Great American Conference (GAC) championship

three times in 1996, 1998 and 199 and were conference finalists in 1995 and 1997.

Drown began his collegiate head coaching career at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo. There, he completed his first turnaround of a program as he turned the Bearcats into proven winners as he helped with the growing pains associated with making the jump from NAIA to NCAA Division II. In six seasons in Bolivar, Drown’s teams went 77-87 (.470) including 47-35 (.573) over his last three years with the program. In 2001, his team earned the school’s first-ever weekly national ranking (11th).

Before becoming a successful collegiate wom-en’s coach, Drown coached varsity high school boy’s basketball in his home state of Missouri for five years, ending his time with an overall record of 97-38 (.719) between Licking High School (1979-83) and Rock Bridge High School (1983-84). His 1981-82 Licking HS squad posted a 24-game winning streak and claimed three tourna-ment titles. The following year, his team finished sec-ond in the AA – Missouri State Tournament.

Drown earned his bachelor’s (1977) and mas-ter’s (1981) degrees from Southwest Missouri State University.

Drown’s wife Gina is a native of Dublin, Ga. Together they have five children - Christie, Cassie, Kyle, Ashlee (a graduate of Georgia Southern) and Laura - as well as nine grandchildren. Gina and Kip reside in Statesboro.
