As we begin the summer months….wait, sorry, these temps lately have me a little confused! Wow, great golfing weather for you though as we go into November? Speaking of November, the last day to post scores for our region is November 14 and then we go into our Inactive Season. Score posting will resume on March 1, 2017.

It has been an extremely busy last couple months since our last issue. We had the US Senior Amateur at Old Warson and wrapped up the 2016 MAGA tournament season with the 4-Ball, Mid-America Junior Cup and Amateur Series Championship. All of which benefited from this fantastic fall weather.

MAGA has a couple exciting announcements to make. We are currently taking resumes in search of a new full-time staff member for 2017, the Director, Operations will be involved in all aspects of the day-to-day operations of MAGA with an emphasis on the tournament schedule. MAGA and the Southern Illinois Golf Association (SIGA) have reached a collaboration agreement for MAGA to provide SIGA members with GHIN handicapping services in 2017. This will also allow SIGA clubs the benefit of receiving the new USGA Tournament Management powered by Golf Genius software package. A formal announcement should be rolled out in the coming weeks.

As always, our goal is to have the 2017 MAGA Tournament Schedule finalized and published by January 1. I have several dates filled and am working to meet that deadline once again. Check the website for updates and we will have the 2017 schedule in the final 2016 issue in January.

Cheers to a wonderful Holiday Season to our members and thank you for reading! If you would like to reach out, please email me at [email protected].

Rules of Golf CoRneR

3

WhAt conStitUteS “the rUleS”? it’S not JUSt the rUleS PAPerBAck!

According to Rule 6-1, “The player and his caddie are responsible for knowing the Rules.” But exactly what is meant by the Rules? It surprises most players when I explain that it is more than the contents of the “Rules of Golf” paperback published by the USGA and the R&A that conveniently fits in their back pocket or golf bag. The defined term, Rules, includes: a) The Rules of Golf and their interpretations as contained in the “Decisions on the Rules of Golf, b) any “Conditions of Competition established by the Committee, c) any “Local Rules” established by the Committee, and d) the specifications on clubs, balls, devices and other equipment.

Below are some particulars that may relate to your experience. Collectively, these items are the Rules:

1. After registering for a competition, players are often provided information on the “Conditions of the Competition”, and perhaps the “Pace of Play Policy” that will be used.

2. The backside of the scorecards used at most competitions typically have a set of “Local Rules” that deal with subjects like integral parts of the course, seams of cut turf, conforming balls, driver heads and footwear, and embedded balls through the green.

3. When players arrive at the first tee to begin their stipulated round, the Official Starter will typically go through a procedure with players during the few minutes between groups. Among the informational items typically is a “Notice to Players.” This is normally a one-page document with details on topics like motorized transportation (carts), conforming

golf balls, pace of play, discontinuance of play for dangerous situations (lightning), markings that may be specific to the host course for out of bounds, ground under repair, and similar subjects.

4. Rules Officials carry a 600-page book called the “Decisions on the Rules of Golf”, which contains the Rules and their interpretations that form the basis for their rulings. For example, here is Decision 27-2c/1.5, with a specific situation in which a player has the option to play his provisional (with a penalty stroke) or take relief (without penalty) from ground under repair:

Q. A player hits his tee shot into an area of tall rough and, since the ball may be lost, he plays a provisional ball. During search for the original ball, the player discovers that the Committee has marked a large area of the rough as ground under repair. It is established that there is virtual certainty that the original ball is in the ground under repair. Does the provisional ball automatically become the ball in play since the original ball, which has not been found, was outside a water hazard?

A. No. The player may continue play with the provisional ball under Rule 27-2b or he may proceed under Rule 25-1c(i) as it is virtually certain that his ball is in ground under repair - see Exception to Rule 27-2b.

Knowing the Rules is a responsibility. Having this knowledge provides an opportunity to avoid penalties and understand options that may help with situations you will encounter when playing competitive golf.

US Senior Women’s Results

Port finiSheS Strong, WinS 3rd Senior Women’S title

Well, there’s Tiger Woods and Bobby Jones with nine USGA trophies. Followed by Jack Nicklaus and JoAnne Gunderson Carner with eight. Next are two women, Carol Semple Thompson and Ellen Port with seven! That’s the list. All-Time!

Port, 55, of St. Louis, won her seventh USGA championship on Thursday at Wellesley Country Club, defeating fellow 55-year-old Andrea Kraus, of Baltimore, 3 and 2, in the 18-hole final of the 55th U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship on the par-74, 6,049-yard Donald Ross layout.

“Fantastic,” said Port. “It’s always great to win a USGA championship. You work so hard to get here and it’s just so special when you can finish it off.”

Port’s 7-1 record is the best winning percentage among females who have reached six or more USGA finals. Port received a text of encouragement from Carol Thompson, who has also won seven titles. “It’s mind-boggling,” said Port. “I’m definitely not in that league. [Carol] is a good friend of mine. Carol drummed me the first time I played in an [amateur] event. She beat me 6 and 5 at the [Women’s] Western. She was a legend and we sat down and had lunch. I’ve learned a lot from her and respect her. “It’s just a real honor.”

Port receives a gold medal and custody of the Senior Women’s Amateur trophy for one year. She also receives a 10-year exemption to the Senior Women’s Amateur, and exemptions into the 2017 and 2018 U.S. Women’s Amateur and U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championships. Kraus, who was competing in her first final in 26 USGA match-play appearances, receives a silver medal and a three-year Senior Women’s Amateur exemption. She also is exempt into next year’s U.S. Women’s Amateur and U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur.

Port’s only previous meeting with Kraus came 21 years ago in the 1995 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur at Essex County Club in nearby Manchester-by-the-Sea, where Port won the match and went on to claim her first USGA championship. In a tight, back-and-forth final at Wellesley, Port took control with winning pars on Nos. 10 and 14, the latter on an 8-foot putt. Port closed out the match on the 16th hole with a two-putt from 30 feet that prevailed over Kraus’ missed 10-footer for par. Port was the equivalent of 2 under par over 16 holes, with the usual match-play concessions, including a 30-foot birdie on the par-3 12th hole that Kraus matched from half that distance.

“Ellen is amazing,” said Kraus. “She’s a lovely human being and I give her incredible kudos. She’s got a family, she does it all.” Kraus started strong by stuffing her approach on the par-4 first hole to 3 feet for a winning birdie. But she gave it back with an errant tee shot on the third hole that stopped inches from going out of bounds. A double-bogey 6 squared the match.

Kraus regained the lead on the next hole when Port missed a 4-foot downhill par putt. Port won Nos. 7 and 8 with conceded birdies for a 1-up lead, but Kraus came back with her best shot of the match, a wedge to a foot for a conceded birdie on the par-5 ninth. It would be the last hole she would win. She wound up the equivalent of 4 over for the match.

Port now returns to her duties as the head women’s golf coach at Washington University in St. Louis. Her team already owns one victory in 2016 and has a tournament that begins on Friday at Illinois Wesleyan. She took over the team last year after teaching and coaching for 30 years at the John Burroughs School, a private high school.

“My [women’s] team has been texting me and they’ve been having way more fun at practice since I’ve been gone,” said Port. “The captains have been in charge and they have a trick-shot video that they created. I would not be sitting here if both of my employers had not allowed me to play and continue to compete. So I am very grateful.”

By David Shefter, USGA

Ellen Port, with seven fingers, denoting her seven USGA titles, tieing her for third all-time on the USGA wins list.

The University of Missouri-St. Louis’ golf team opened their 2016 season in style at The Legends Country Club, winning its sixth consecutive Arch Cup title on Tuesday, September 12. However, that wasn’t the story of the match. UMSL junior Markus Lindberg, who hails from Sweden, not only took medalist honors with a school record 134 total, but he did it with a NCAA-record-tying round of 60 in his final 18 holes. In accomplishing this feat, he becomes just the 10th collegiate golfer to card a round of 60. As a team, UMSL broke school records for its score of 561 and its second round of 275.Lindberg started his second round with an eagle, followed by four

consecutive birdies. A birdie at the 10th positioned him 7-under for his round, before three more birdies on 14, 15 and 17 had him with just 56 strokes heading to the par-5 18th. A birdie would tie the record, but he had a chance to become the first

collegiate golfer to score a 59 when his second shot rolled onto the green from about 25 yards out. Unfortunately, the putt missed, but set up an easy birdie to become just the 10th to score a 60 in college.“He was really calm all afternoon and never seemed to get caught up in the

moment and what he was trying to do,” UMSL coach Troy Halterman told Golfweek. “He just kept hitting shots. He has shown the ability to make large numbers of birdies, but never put a complete round together in a tournament before.”Lindberg has had previous success at the college level, including earning a Division II All-American honorable

mention spot in 2015. But this certainly had to be the highlight of his career so far, and it has his name planted firmly in the record books until someone finally manages to find a way to that elusive 59.

St. loUiS golf hiStoryPro eventS 1946-1953

The post-World War II era of golf in St. Louis began in May 1946 with the Western Open at Sunset CC. A strong field was in place, including Byron Nelson, even though he had “retired” a year earlier. In the end, it would be one of Ben Hogan’s conquests as he won by 4 shots, claiming the $2,000 top prize.

Next came the famous 1947 US Open at St. Louis CC. This was the Open Snead should have won. Instead, it’s another example of how his impatience - and perhaps lack of confidence in USGA events - came to the forefront, enabling Lew Worsham to claim his title.

The 1948 PGA, still being contested at match play, came to Norwood Hills on May. Following two rounds of stroke play, Snead, Hogan, Jimmy Demaret, Jim Ferrier and Skip Alexander made up the top five. While Snead lost in the 4th round, Demaret and Hogan joined Claude Harmon and Mike Turnesa in the semifinals. In the finals, Hogan displayed excellent shotmaking, denying Turnesa his major by a 7 and 6 margin.

Following the Western Amateur at Bellerive in 1949, the pros returned for the St. Louis Open in 1950 and 1951. Cary Middlecoff, the Tennessee dentist, took both titles, the first at Algonquin and the second at Meadowbrook.

Lloyd Mangrum, a Chicago pro, had finished second in 1951 to Middlecoff. Looking to redeem himself, he posted a 274 at the Western Open at Westwood, including a course record 64, to cruise to an eight shot victory. South African Bobby Locke, one of the games greatest putters, finished second.

The final pro event of this era was the 1953 Western Open at Bellerive. Mangrum returned, looking to repeat, but he finished third. Westwood pro Ed Furgol was gearing up for his eventual 1954 US Open win, as he finished second. Atop the leader board after four rounds was E.J. “Dutch” Harrison, who shot 70-69-70-69, for a four stroke win. Later that year, Dutch would join the new Old Warson CC as their head professional.

US Senior AmateurDave Ryan rode a red-hot putting stroke to grab an early lead, then held off a late

charge by Matthew Sughrue to win the 62nd U.S. Senior Amateur Championship, 2 up, at Old Warson Country Club, which played to a par of 71 and measured 6,956 yards for the 18-hole championship match.

Ryan, 62, of Taylorville, Ill., only 90 minutes away from Old Warson, had a week for the ages. After winning the Illinois Senior Amateur by nine strokes last week, Ryan defeated two-time Senior Amateur champion Paul Simson in the Round of 16 and two-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion and this year’s Senior Amateur medalist, Tim Jackson, in the semifinals.

In his 20-hole victory over Simson on Tuesday, Ryan made history by recording only the third known hole-in-one on a par-4 hole in a USGA championship, acing the 270-yard 14th hole. It was the 13th known double eagle in USGA championship history. Now, he’s a national champion, winning at the club where he qualified for his first USGA championship – the 1986 U.S. Amateur – 30 years ago.

“I’m still in shock, a state of shock,” said Ryan. “For a guy from Taylorville, Illinois, to win a national championship, it’s unbelievable.”

Sughrue, 57, of Arlington, Va., won the opening hole, but Ryan put on a putting exhibition to win the next five holes, making a 12-footer for birdie on No. 2, a two-putt par to Sughrue’s bogey on No. 3, a 7-footer for birdie on No. 4, a 20-footer for birdie on No. 5 and a 15-foot birdie on the par-5 sixth.

With Sughrue in good position to win holes 8 and 9, Ryan’s short game again bailed him out, as he earned halves with up-and-downs to keep a 4-up lead at the turn.

Ryan, who grew up playing on a nine-hole course in Taylorville, chalked up his putting wizardry to some film study.

“My son gave me a video to watch from Dave Stockton, who is a great putter,” said Ryan. “I took some of his tips and it’s like shooting free throws, you just get over it, see the line, and let it go. And it worked this week. And it worked last week when I played in the state Senior Amateur in Illinois.”

Sughrue, in what would foreshadow much of the rest of the round, had a chance to win No. 10, but his birdie putt burned the edge and he had to settle for a half. With very little going his way, Sughrue kept his composure and began a furious rally on the 11th hole, which he won with a par.

On the par-5 12th, Sughrue won with a conceded birdie after he nearly holed a flop shot from the rough. Sughrue then drained a 10-footer for a winning birdie on the par-3 13th to trim the deficit to 1 down. He missed a 3-footer that would have squared the match on No. 14, but finally drew even with a winning par on No. 15.

With the players facing nearly identical approach shots on the 621-yard, par-5 16th hole, Sughrue’s momentum faded when he missed the green left, and his ball rolled down a ridge. Sughrue had a chance to earn a half, but his 15-footer lipped out. Ryan went back to 1 up with a comfortable two-putt par, then maintained the advantage when Sughrue lipped out yet again on No. 17, one of six Sughrue putts that lipped out or burned the edge during the round.

After Ryan crushed his drive on 18 down the middle, Sughrue hit his tee shot in the left rough, giving him little chance to win the hole, which Ryan eventually won with a conceded par.

“It’s disappointing. I felt like I had enough game to come back and win and it just didn’t fall my way,” said Sughrue. “He’s a great player and he put on a great exhibition today. But, I’ll take solace in knowing that I probably shook him up a little bit with some of the shots that I had and made it a match. I’ll take that as a good indication of where my game is in senior amateur golf.” - by Joey Flyntz, USGA

norWood hillS to hoSt 2018 U.S. Women’S mid-AmAteUr

The USGA recently announced that the 2018 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur will be played at Norwood Hills CC, September 22-27. This will be the second USGA Championship held at Norwood Hills since its founding in 1922. The club hosted the 2001 U.S. Senior Amateur, won by Kemp Richardson. This is also the second U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur to be held in the area, the last held in 2001 at Fox Run GC.

Norwood has a rich championship history. The club hosted the 1948 PGA Championship where Ben Hogan defeated Mike Turnesa when the event was contested at Match Play. Norwood hosted a number of LPGA events in the 1950s and 1960s and hosted back-to-back PGA events in 1972 and 1973, won by Lee Trevino and Gene Littler respectively.

With 36 holes - the East and West courses - the West course traditionally has been host for championship events.

In 2017, Boone Valley will host the U.S. Junior Girls Championship. The 2018 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur will mark the 10th USGA Championship held in the area since 2001.

No one playing alongside Ryan Schuenke said much about the score he was posting as the foursome made its way to the closing stretch of holes Saturday at Quincy Country Club.

Still, it was evident something magical was happening.“I knew what I was shooting,” said Schuenke, who was walking with

QCC pro Gideon Smith while Kevin Becker and Scott Lewis rode in a cart. “But I don’t think Gideon knew until I made birdie on No. 16 and he asked Kevin, who was keeping score for the group. ‘Is that 9- or 10-under?’

“Kevin said it was 10 and Gideon said, ‘Hey, I don’t believe in the whole don’t-talk-to-you, keep-quiet stuff. Let’s do something special.’” It was a round unlike any other ever shot at a Quincy course.

Schuenke made a tap-in birdie on the par-5 18th to finish a round of 11-under 59 and break the course record by three strokes. It is the first sub-60 round shot at any of Quincy’s 18-hole courses.

Quincy native and professional golfer Luke Guthrie owns the record at Westview Golf Course with a 10-under 61, while PGA Tour pros Boo Weekley and Troy Merritt both shot 9-under 63s during the TriState Pro-Am to set the course record at Spring Lake Country Club. Former club pros Lynn Rosely and JC Anderson and pro golfer Matt Weibring shared the QCC record at 8-under 62.

Breaking their record had special meaning for Schuenke, the 2015 Quincy men’s city golf champion. “Knowing those guys had shot 62, that was always a special number,” said Schuenke, who had 11 birdies and no bogeys in his record round. “All of a sudden you go absolutely off the charts and shoot a 59. That’s a head-scratcher.” It wasn’t the first time Schuenke threatened the mark.

Twice this summer, Schuenke fired a 7-under 63 to nearly tie the course record. In fact, in his last attempt, he nearly drove the green on the par-4 18th and needed to get it up-and-down to tie the record. It didn’t happen. “I was close,” Schuenke said. This time, he reached 7-under following a birdie on the 13th hole.

“I was thinking I could make one more (birdie) somewhere coming in,” Schuenke said. “But a couple of those holes you have chances where you can make bogey. So you have to pay attention.”

Schuenke made three consecutive birdies at Nos. 14, 15 and 16. After a par on the par-3 17th, he drove his tee shot to the left of the green on No. 18. His chip nearly rolled in, leaving just 6 inches to tap in for the final birdie and the 59. “It was about as stress-free on the last putt as you can be,” Schuenke said. Really, most of the round was stress-free.

“I hit it good off the tee, which is important obviously on that course to start because it’s tree-lined and narrow,” Schuenke said. “I was pretty much in the fairway or just off the fairway all day, which meant I had a lot of wedge-type approaches.” He was inside 15 feet on nearly every green and needed just 24 putts in his round.

“It was one of those things where you start making 10- or 12-footers and then you start thinking you can make them all,” Schuenke said. “They just started going in.”
