Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

This month is our Annual Diocesan Convention. The theme title is: “The Jesus Movement: GO!” The Jesus movement is a term we often hear from The Most Rev. Michael Curry, our Presiding Bishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church. If you have ever heard our presiding bishop speak, you know how easily the name of Jesus rolls off his tongue.

I got used to hearing Michael Curry preach and speak in the Diocese of North Carolina where I began my min-istry as an ordained priest in the year 2000. I was nurtured for over three years in that diocese and learned what power from the pulpit can really mean. If you are able to go to our 50th anniversary convention this year, even if you are not a delegate, I recommend your attendance. Please try to make it to Boise for the final Eucharist at the end on Sunday, October 29th even if you can’t attend all of it. I promise you will not be disappointed by Michael Curry’s sermon.

As I grew up an Episcopalian listening to many sermons from different priests and deacons, I learned that everyone has their “own voice.” Some speak softly, some speak intellectually, some are poetic, many are brave, but few have the passion and drive found to speak in all of the different voices….but Michael Curry conveys all that you hope to hear and more.

Being excited about our faith is not as popular in our culture as it used to be. However, I learned to understand The Dream of God from Michael Curry. He sent a copy of the book of the same title, written by Verna Dozier, to every

clergy person in the diocese. I had al-ready read the book, but was excited by all the clergy reading it at once and the way that Michael Curry preached about the dream of God for each and all of us.

God does have a dream and it is larger and wider than most of us expect. The dream of God is that every human be-ing will experience the love of God and of his son, Jesus Christ in this world.

We might ask how that is done. Michael might say, “Join the Jesus Movement: Go!” We see it happening as disasters and hopelessness appears in our world. We see it when people lend a hand, leave the comfort of their everyday lives and “GO!”

Mission is what the Episcopal Church is engaged in now. While things can look hopeless, we find that by joining to-gether in the Jesus Movement and reaching out to those who need the help and love of our Lord, the dream of God is realized. We are all capable of helping others, even if we are not physically able to travel. We can give to the cause in many ways; we can give our time to prayer for others and show in every way that we are Jesus People by practicing the way of Christ in our world.

Life is larger than we know when we are members of the Jesus Movement. Let us make a difference in this world by helping to create the dream of God. Yours in Christ, Pastor Susan+

Vestry Help Past Vestry members, your current Vestry needs your help. Due to turnover in our Vestry, we have a very small rotation of people to take VPOD duties. If any of you would be willing to sign up for a Sunday between now and the end of the year, we would be incredibly grateful!

Senior Warden’s Message Coincidentally, I recently read the Art of Happiness by the Dalai Lama. In that book, it is described that the key to happiness is rooted in compassion. However, compas-sion can be difficult when our dif-ferences are the focal point of much of our daily lives. To combat that, the Dalai Lama has reduced his belief system to a few funda-mental facts: 1) I am a human being. 2) I want to be happy and I don’t want to suffer. 3) Other human beings, like myself, also want to be happy and don’t want to suffer.

In other words, we are all humans and fundamentally we want the same things. By focusing on our similarities instead of our differ-ences, we can find unity and bridge divides. Can it really be that easy? Absolutely! After all, we have received the same mes-sage from Christ, “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39).

By Nick Burrows

Summer has moved to fall, and while that means the weather is changing, for me it also means that the World Series is around the cor-ner and the football season has started. This is the bittersweet real-ity of being a sports fan. As a sports fan, I don’t invest hours of time in front of the TV, but I follow sports regularly and have my favor-ite teams and players. Most of all, I have always loved the drama that unfolds in competition and through embittered rivalries. Thinking about these rivalries lead me to think about the differences around us every day. As individuals, in many ways, our labels have be-come our identity. Here in Idaho Falls with the Emotion Bowl and the Civil War, people identify as Grizzlies, Tigers, Bees, and Knights. Political parties and affiliations rou-tinely polarize people. Religious differences often alienate other-wise like-minded individuals from each other. Race, gender, sexual orientation, income bracket, na-tional origin, label, label, label, la-bel. The more I thought about how we, as a society, feed on these di-vides, the sadder I became.

United Thank Offering

From https://www.episcopalchurch.org/united-thank-offering

The United Thank Offering (UTO) is a ministry of The Episcopal Church for the mission of the whole church. Through UTO, men, women, and children nurture the habit of giving daily thanks to God. These prayers of thanksgiving start when we recognize and name our many daily blessings. Those who participate in UTO discover that thankfulness leads to generosity. UTO is entrusted to promote thank offerings, to receive the offerings, and to distribute the monies to support mission and ministry throughout The Episcopal Church and Provinces of the Anglican Communion.

For more information, please visit the above referenced website.

Donation envelopes can be found in the pews or on the narthex table.

October 1: Food For The Poor On Sunday, October 1, St. Luke’s will have the pleasure of welcoming the Reverend Holly Ostlund to worship with us. An Episcopal priest, she speaks for those who have no voice – the Third World destitute served by Food For The Poor, an interdenomina-tional ministry providing food, clothing, medical care, housing, school supplies and economic development programs in the Caribbean and Latin America. Rev. Holly travels most weekends for Food For The Poor, visiting churches and introducing peo-ple of The First World to people of The Third World. Holly lives in sunny Palm Beach Gardens, FL (Near West Palm Beach) with her canine “rescues,” Dakota and Sahara, and her adult son, Grant. Weekdays Holly is a Palm Beach County hospice chaplain. Rev. Holly will be giving the sermon on October 1. She will also be available after both services to answer any questions or provide more information. She asks that you use the envelopes provided for your donations and that they be made out to Food For The Poor (not St. Luke’s).

We are often reminded by Jesus that we are connected to one another as neighbors, friends and family. How well do we know one another as neighbors? It dawned on me, as often as I have visited Episcopal churches within the diocese, or shared resources here at Good Shepherd, most folks still do not know about the great resources available from Indigenous Ministries.

In hopes of furthering this great work with our neighbors, as well as parishioners who have yet to take part, we are traveling to every parish in the diocese to learn, pray, and hopefully be transformed. This is no easy task, and for many there will be moments of discomfort. I pray all are open to the Spirit and seeing Christ someplace unexpected.

Our time together will begin with a meal, a short film about the Doctrine of Discovery, some reflection, a longer film, and healing prayers. This time together is something we will all be blessed by. Remember to bring something important to you to be placed on the Altar we will build. I look forward to our visit. I pray God keep you all, and eagerly await our walk together.

Yours in Christ,

Ron Braman, Sr. Warden,

UTO Ingathering: Sunday, October 22

By Johannah Grant

What’s an Ingathering? It is a Sunday we set aside to recognize United Thank Of-fering, St. Luke’s outreach for October. This year, our UTO Ingathering will be Sunday, Oct. 22, during both services. Everyone will be invited to bring their UTO donation boxes/envelopes up dur-ing Celebrations and Thanksgivings. Your donations can be in the form of a check, cash, or a “blue box” full of coins you’ve collected over the last year (the tellers don’t mind!).

In researching what was new for this month’s outreach, one interesting I read on the UTO website is this: “There are roughly 2 million Episcopalians in the United States alone. If every American Episcopalian put one penny in a UTO Blue Box every day, there would be more than $7 million to grant each year. It adds up fast if we all contribute, and I bet we all have something each day we can give thanks for.”

I also learned that during 2017, UTO has been celebrating the 165th birthday of Julia Chester Emery and the work she did for UTO. On the UTO page of the Episcopal Church website (https://www.episcopalchurch.org/united-thank-offering), you will find several articles written about Ms. Emery, including her involvement in the ordination of women and how noonday prayers actually started in her office. They are all well-worth the read. You can find Donation envelopes in the pews and also on the table in the nar-thex. We also have “the blue boxes,” UTO boxes that you can take home and use to give thanks daily for the blessings in your life. And then remember to bring them to church on October 22 for our UTO Ingathering.

Vestry Highlights

by Judi Kahl, Vestry Clerk

The vestry moved the monthly meeting to the first Tuesday of the month and our Septem-ber meeting was held on the 5th. It was an uplifting evening as we discussed Rally Day and the new breakfast con-cept between the two services and for those attending Everybody Learns – Sunday school classes for all ages.

As we move into the autumn season and think about closing our own windows, My-T-Brite has been approved to clean the outside windows of the church!

The Vestry agreed to update the existing Vestry Norms and brain-stormed categories more suitable to the current Vestry. This will aid in keeping our meetings productive.

Redesigning the office space has been approved as presented to Buildings & Grounds!

The next meeting is October 3.

Grandmother’s Club! How we love to talk about our grandchil-dren! On Rally Day, women of a certain age group signed up to belong to the newly created Grandmother’s Club. There were more signatures for this min-istry than any other. The Grandmother’s Club will be for lunch and fun fellowship. And what other could we choose to talk about but our adorable grandkids!

Please attend our first fun meeting on October 20, at 12:00 p.m. at City Bagel, 369 Shoup Avenue. If you have a picture of your grandchild (grandchildren), please bring it along and plan to gloat over the darlings.

We will make a decision about when and where to hold our next meeting in No-vember. The City Bagel is centrally lo-cated and has a meeting room off the dining area. We can buy our lunch and join up in the meeting room. Pastor Susan will be the host this time and will furnish the dessert! Hope to see you

Homeless Stand Down Saturday, Nov. 4

Every year the National Government makes an effort to count the "homeless" people in our nation. This is done in our community by hosting a day of service to the homeless by offering medical exams, coats, blankets, VA information etc. at a "Homeless Stand Down". This year it will be held on November the 4th.

We have been asked to help provide; white tube socks and food items that don't require cooking or refrigeration (snack bars, fruit cups etc.). A box will be marked for donations. All items need to be at the church by Nov. 3rd.

I am proud to have served on the Paradise Point Committee for the past 6 years and as Chairman for the past 2 years. My term ends at Diocesan Convention this year.

Our church is still represented on the Paradise Point Committee. Misty Martinell, who serves on Diocesan Council is now the Council liaison to the Paradise Point Committee. She is passionate about camp and savvy with finances. I'm sure she will make us proud! Thanks Misty.

Have an hour? Maybe two or three? Or maybe time for a short term commitment? This column provides ways for you to help St. Luke’s. Some items may take an hour, some things may take an afternoon, or maybe 2 hours a month, and some may be asking for a 2-3 month commitment. We hope that you will able help us!

Have some time on October 7th? Volunteer to help with The Bishop’s Barbecue • Help set up (2-3 people) ~ 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. • Help decorate (2 people) ~ 10 a.m. until noon • Help clean up after (4 people) ~ 5:30-6:30 • Help wash dishes after (2 people) ~ 5:30-6:30 If you can help us on October 7th, please contact Kris Smith and get your name on the list!

VPOD for a day Our Vestry members could use a little help! If you have served on the Vestry and would serve as VPOD for one or two Sundays through the end of the year, please contact the church office for available dates. If you can fulfill any of these current needs at St. Luke’s, please contact the church office at 208-522-8465 or [email protected]. We will see that the right person gets your information and contacts you.

Men’s Fellowship Attention men in our congregation. St. Luke’s is starting a new men’s fellowship program, starting in October. In October, we are going to meet on the 14th at 9 am, at the Villa downtown. We will discuss the Gospel reading for Sunday and then have any

other conversations about life that faith brings us to have. Feel free to bring anyone who you think would benefit from this type of fellowship.

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Prayer Chain

“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears

us.” 1 John 5:14 The St. Luke’s Prayer Chain is made up of church members who are called to the ministry of prayer. Any member of the Prayer Chain may be called to initiate a “prayer request.” This request is then passed along the chain until it returns to the member who received the call. (If one member is unavailable to receive the call, Prayer Chain members will call the following person on the list.) The Prayer Chain members will keep all prayer requests confidential. St. Luke’s Day! Time to celebrate our Patron Saint! October 15, 2017

St. Luke is our Patron Saint for whom this church is named. Once a year, on a Sunday, we celebrate this special time remembering that St. Luke was a physician and evangelist. To mark this day, during our worship, we include a public service of healing.

Healing was one of the many acts that Jesus performed and as followers, we continue participate in the laying on of hands and heal-ing prayer. During the service, all are invited to come forward to the rail for anointing and healing prayer. You do not need to say what your desire for healing is about. We realize that all of us need healing of some kind, whether it is for a physical illness, a psy-chological condition or something we are not completely aware of ourselves.

We thank doctors, nurses and all who work in the medical field knowing that blessings of healing come to us in many ways and through the many people who touch our lives. Pastor Susan+

Thank you to those who helped with September hospitality: Megan Dodd, everyone who brought food and helped with Rally Day, Carolyn Robertson and Johannah Grant, and everyone who is helping with our new breakfast time.

Thank you to Sue Hacker, Pat Foster and Johannah Grant for cleaning the insides of both refrig-erators.

Thank you to Pat Foster for helping in the office (most) Thursdays. You are greatly appreciated.

Thank you to everyone who assisted St. Luke’s with the 24th annual Progressive Dinner: • Lots of people donated food, including Sandy Price, Linda Turner, Pageant Jones, Buddy Hall, Misty Martinell, Jac-

quie Janibagian, Susan Mills, Kelli Marshall, Susan Speir. • Jacquie Janibagian, who led food production, with help from Sandy Price, Susan Mills, Lonnie and John Martinell. • Misty Martinell, who was the Kitchen Manager that evening. Kris Smith helped with set-up for the event and Jac-

quie Janibagian, Susan Mills, Cher Stone, Kelli Marshall, Angie Lee, John Martinell, Johannah and Brian Grant, and Anya and Eden Smith were on hand to greet and serve our visitors, and most important, clean up after!
