SUNDAY ADULT CLASSES (9:15-10:15 A.M.)

NOAH led by Pastor French in the cafeteria. The biblical account of Noah and the Flood is one in

which water is literally all over the place. What are we to make of this water story? What message does

it send about how God chooses to use water? Does it have any relation to the Church today? These are

the types of questions we will ask of the story in Genesis 6-9, a story that is full of warning and

consolation.

LUTHERANISM 101 led by Pastor Heckert in the fellowship hall. This week Pastor begins a new

adult information (new member) class which will introduce you to Christian doctrine as revealed by

God through Scripture. He will explain the essentials of our faith: what the Church believes and what

it means to live “in Christ.” If you would like to brush up on your fundamentals of the faith and meet

some potential new members, we would love to have you join us!

A DEEPER LOOK moderated by Grace Gillespie in the fellowship hall. This group discusses the

Bible lessons (pericopes) which are read in church each Sunday. You are invited every Sunday, but will

not be lost if you miss a Sunday. This is a casual class with lots of interaction. We pray for each other

and care for each other. Join us today and every Sunday.

KATHARINA & MARTIN LUTHER led by Eunice Maurer and Judy Nixon in the school library.

How did this most unlikely, most radical union between a runaway nun and a renegade monk come to

be? How did Martin Luther, the monk, and Katharina von Bora, the nun, come to wed in the first place?

Come learn about Katharina in our new Reformation Book Club series.

SUNDAY SCHOOL (9:15-10:15 A.M.)

Children will be directed to various places for the rally today following the pancake breakfast. Please

meet in the cafeteria for great food followed by fun.

WEEKDAY BIBLE STUDIES

LADIES LIFELIGHT BIBLE STUDIES:

Ruth/Esther led by Barb Kirkpatrick on Mondays 7:00-9:00 p.m. in the conference room.

Daniel led by Jan Harris on Tuesdays 9:30-11:30 a.m. in the conference room.

CONFESSIONS BIBLE STUDY led by Pastor Barton on Mondays 7-8 p.m. in the fellowship hall.

We will not be meeting on Monday, September 11, but will resume on Monday, September 18 with a

new study of a part of the Lutheran Confessions: The Power and Primacy of the Pope. We’ll consider

the role of the Pope in the Roman Catholic Church and our own view of church structure and power,

based on Scripture. New people are always welcome to join this study, (though we would encourage

women to consider attending the regular Ladies LifeLight Bible Study which meets at the same time

on Mondays or on Tuesday mornings). Contact Pastor Barton for details at: [email protected].

COFFEE CLUB led by Pastor French on Thursdays 7:00-7:45 a.m. in the conference room.

THURSDAY EVENING BIBLE STUDY led by Pastor Heckert on Thursdays 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the

conference room. It’s back! Join Pastor for riveting discussion of biblical texts, real-life implications,

and the occasional humorous anecdote! Starting this week, we will be looking at Matthew 19, and

examining the Rev. Dr. N. T. Wright’s explanation of that chapter in his book, Matthew for Everyone:

Pt. 2. We’ll see you there!

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

PURDUE STUDENTS: A warm welcome to any and all Purdue students joining us for worship today!

We are elated to have you, and pray God’s richest blessings to you as you begin this new school year!

We’d like to keep you updated on things going on here at St. James, and as such, please be sure to

include your e-mail address when you sign the fellowship pad! We look forward to worshiping our

Lord Jesus with you again soon!

LIFE THOUGHTS IN THE CHURCH YEAR: Life Thoughts are designed to help pastors and

congregations see the church year through the lens of the sanctity of human life; they are based on

the appointed readings from Lutheran Service Book. September 10 – We warn our neighbors to turn

from abortion, embryo destruction, assisted suicide, abuse, pornography, promiscuity, and perversion

(Ezekiel 33:7-9). This is not merely because it is wicked but even more because they are God’s

precious children to whom He has come in Christ to share His whole kingdom (Matthew 18:3-4, 10-14).

Father in heaven, strengthen us to tell brothers, sisters, and lost ones of Your deliverance. Amen.

YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED: An Open House is being given for Judie Watts in celebration of

her 80th birthday. Please join us to wish her the best in the fellowship hall on Sunday, September 10

between 1:00 & 4:00 p.m.

Page 4: Ushers · 2017-09-18 · Hamelman, Vivian Berman, Ben Bunton; Sun. 10:30-Logan DePew, Matthew Minjarez, Gabrielle Lucies Yantis, Lorraine Miller Week of September 10, 2017 SUNDAY

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: The first Lutherans for Life Regional Conference will be held at the

Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne on Saturday, September 16. The theme is “Hope for

Life!” For registration, schedules, hotels, and more go to: www.lutheransforlife.org/conference.

CHOIR CALLOUT: The Lutheran Church has, since her birth, been called “the singing church.”

Luther himself had a very high esteem for music and church hymns. “Music is an outstanding gift

of God and next to theology.” [What Luther Says, Plass, CPH, p.979] Luther wrote many hymns in

German, restoring the music of the church to the people (much like he did with his German translation

of the Scriptures). We invite you to join in the heritage of our church as we prepare for the 500th

anniversary of the Reformation! Choir rehearsals will be held on Thursday evenings in the music

room (top of the stairs/west of the sanctuary). Our Bell choir meets at 5:30 and Adult Choir at 6:30.

We encourage all talents, high school age and older, to join us! It is good to give thanks to the Lord,

to sing praises to your name, O Most High! (Psalm 92:1)

REFORMATION CELEBRATION ACTIVITIES:

Tuesday, September 12 - The Reformation Celebration Committee will meet in the cafeteria from

6:00 to 7:00 p.m. If you’d like to share in the preparations for Reformation activities, please come!

Wednesday, September 13 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Wabash Landing 9, Grace Lutheran Church

is sponsoring the movie, Luther, the Idea that Changed the World - the rousing adventure story of

Martin Luther’s life, following his bold quest for truth; a journey that would reshape the church, and

the world. Advance purchase of movie tickets is required. To purchase tickets and/or watch a

trailer for the movie, check out www.gracelaf.org/luthermovie. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime

event!

Sunday, September 24 - Ladies Lutherhaus Luncheon will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at Lutherhaus

(St. James Cafeteria). Special German fare will be served and a visit from Katie is anticipated.

Tickets, $8 for adults and $3 for children (age 14 or younger), are available at the Information

Center or in the church office during the week. More exciting activities are on the horizon for

October

HAVE YOU SEEN? Have you seen all the work that has been completed over the last year and a half

or so? Next Sunday, September 17, we will be offering 20-30 minute walking tours of all the

renovations that have been happening and are now completed throughout the facility. There’s still more

to do; in older buildings there is always more to do, but our Board of Church Properties and the Century

of Faith efforts have born much fruit. We’ll meet in the cafeteria where there will be punch and cookies

and start the tour from there at noon. A second tour will starting at 12:30. Board members will lead the

tours. We look forward to being able to share with you the amazing improvements that are a result of

God’s grace and your gifts and offerings.

SAVE THE DATE: The St. James Athletic Dept. annual Fish Fry is fast approaching, on October 6!

Join us for wonderful food and fellowship while supporting our athletes! Pre-sale tickets will be

available soon for $10 per adult and $5 per child OR at-the-door tickets will be available for $12 per

adult and $7 per child. We are also looking for volunteers to help with this event and/or those wishing

to donate desserts or side dishes. More information will follow as we draw closer to the event! If you

See you there!

GREETER MINISTRY: There was a Greeter Ministry meeting last month. If you are interested in this

important ministry, please contact Beth Lancaster at [email protected].

NAMETAG MINISTRY: September marks the start of new adult Sunday Bible classes, weekday Bible

classes, and a charged up Sunday school program. Take a moment to find time for worship and Bible

studies. It would be a good idea to wear your St. James nametag. Now that schools are back in session,

wearing your nametag makes it easier to know those who are new to the church, to the study, or those

who are visitors needing help. If you need a nametag, complete the form found in the return baskets

near the nametag banners ,or call the church office. We will try to have the new nametag made by the

next Sunday. Thank you. Jerry Ripke

and those you might know. Take a few home and give them to relatives and friends, coworkers and

teammates. The devotions are short and very easy reading. It is a great way to start or end each day.

“LIFE QUOTES” FROM LUTHERANS FOR LIFE (www.lutheransforlife.org): “What do we

have to share with the frail elderly who wonder about God’s purpose for their lives? They are created,

redeemed, and called, and as long as God gives them life, He gives their lives meaning and purpose.”

Rev. Dr. James I. Lamb, former executive director of Lutherans For Life

STEWARDSHIP GENEROSITY THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Matthew 18:4 – “Whoever

humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” What does it mean to have

childlike faith? Certainly Jesus does not want us to have a faith that is childish: we are not called to

ignorance or silliness. Rather, we are called to trust the way a child trusts: with complete confidence

in the Father. We show that confidence in our lives when we follow His directives for our life: Father

knows best, so we’ll take His advice!

$ FINANCIAL NEWS FROM MINDY SCHLOTMAN $

This office has been hopping now that school has started! It is definitely fun to have the children back

in school and the invoices filling my mailbox. As far as the HR side of the office, we have some new

employees that have been entered into our payroll. The new payroll system is very smooth and web

based, so that is helping us be more efficient. We have paid about $69,000 in payroll just since school

started. The business side of the office has been busy with adding a budget to Quick Books, paying

invoices, and organizing the tuition fees that are deposited. Have a great September, it appears the fall

weather is already setting in for the season!

FIFTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

September 17, 2017

Genesis 50:15–21

Romans 14:1–12

Matthew 18:21–35

Forgiving as the Lord Forgives Us

In settling His accounts with us, our Lord acts not with anger, but with compassion. He does

not imprison us as we deserve, but He forgives all our debts and releases us (Matthew 18:23–

27). Therefore, our Lord bids each of us to have “mercy on your fellow servant” and “forgive

your brother from your heart” (Matthew 18:33, 35). By the Lord’s forgiveness of our sins, we

are free to forgive those who sin against us, because He has been handed over to the jailers in

our stead and He has paid our entire debt with His lifeblood. Whether we live or die, we “are

the Lord’s” (Romans 14:8). Since we all will “stand before the judgment seat of God,” we are

not to despise our brother (Romans 14:10), but gladly forgive him. By the grace of God, our

brother also “will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand” (Romans 14:4). Though

we daily sin against each other, the Lord intends “to bring it about that many people should be

kept alive” (Genesis 50:20). Jesus speaks kindly by His Gospel and promises: “I will provide

for you and your little ones” (Genesis 50:21).

Rachel Meyer serves the Lord through The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) as a missionary in Uganda. She teaches at a Lutheran primary school and supports the development of a continuing education program for the teachers. Rachel is also involved with the life and activities of a local congregation, giving her the wonderful opportunity to build relationships and share the Gospel with the local people.

Rachel’s hometown is Milwaukee, Wis. She received bachelor’s degrees in music education and elementary education from Concordia

University Chicago, River Forest, and a master’s degree in education with a specialization in elementary reading and literacy from Walden University. Before serving in Uganda, Rachel taught 2nd grade at Grace Lutheran School, Modesto, Calif. (2004-2008) and 4th grade at St. Paul’s Lutheran School, Bourbonnais, Ill. (2008-2014). She also taught general music to kindergarten through eighth grade at both schools. In addition, she served as a missionary teacher at Concordia English Language Academy, Chiayi, Taiwan (2014-2017).

Rachel’s previous mission service includes serving as a vacation Bible school teacher in Seoul, South Korea (July 2002), serving on a medical mission team in Honduras (July 2013), being a volunteer child care provider at Concordia Children’s Services in Manila, Philippines (Feb. 2015), and serving as a volunteer missionary with the LCMS’ Project 24 in Rongo, Kenya (Feb. 2016). In her free time, Rachel enjoys hiking, reading, music and spending time with family and friends.

Pray for Rachel as she serves in Uganda. Ask God to give her strength as she transitions to life in Uganda and learns the language and the culture. Pray that as she strives to understand the people of Uganda that God gives her opportunities to build relationships where she can share the love of Jesus. Pray for guidance and strength as Rachel builds her support network. Pray that the Holy Spirit works in the hearts of Rachel’s students, her coworkers and their families. Ask God to continue to grow Rachel in her faith and give her wisdom and encouragement to humbly share Christ’s love in word and deed. Pray that God’s name is glorified in all that Rachel does and says. Let us give thanks that Rachel is serving God’s children in this part of the world.

Gifts received for LCMS international workers are deposited in an account restricted for the support of eligible international workers. Any gifts received in excess of a worker’s requirement for a given year are held for that worker until needed. Should a worker’s service conclude for any reason, the funds remaining in the restricted account will be transferred to one or more eligible LCMS international workers who most closely fulfill the restrictions of the original gift. With documented donor permission, a restricted gift can also be utilized to support international work budgeted by the LCMS. Your gift is tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.

Harvey Relief Update: 9/10/17

Prayer: Holy Father, as the images of devastation continue to flood in, Your children turn to You in prayer. Remember all whose lives have been shaken, and hold them in Your everlasting arms. Remember all whose property has been lost, and remind them of the unfading inheritance Your Son has prepared for Your children in heaven. Remember all who work to bring rescue and support to those imperiled, and fill them with courage. Use all Your people as agents of Your divine love and witnesses to our everlasting hope. We ask it in the name of Jesus, our Lord. Amen.

“These people need [our] help. They need basic supplies likefood and water and help cleaning their houses. But most of all, they need to hear that God is with them, and He loves them.”

— Rev. Dustin Beck, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Corpus Christi
