Message from the
Board President & Executive Director
Dear Community Members, Friends, Supporters, Volunteers,
Partners and Neighbors,
As we write this letter, the results of the contentious and often ugly presidential
campaign continue to be felt. While Americans debate the values which should
guide our country’s policies, JFS turns to Jewish values of Chesed (kindness), Tzedakah
(justice) and Tikun Olam (repairing the world) and the history of the Jewish people to
guide it in serving all people within our community. We are pleased to present you
with Jewish Family Service of St. Paul’s (JFS) 2016 Annual Report. In it, you will read
about how these values are translated into programs and services which assist people
in meeting the planned and unplanned changes in their lives.
These programs and services can only be accomplished with the efforts of our
dedicated board, staff, volunteers, community partners and YOU, who share the
values that JFS represents. We express heartfelt gratitude to each of you who
generously helps us be a beacon of hope to those living in the Greater St. Paul
community. Please join us in taking pride in our accomplishments and in continuing
to create a strong and caring community for all.
Sincerely,
Mitzi Gramling
Ted Flaum
President, Board of Directors
Executive Director

AGING AND DISABILITIES SERVICES
Albert is 78 years old and lived alone on the second floor of a rundown apartment building. Albert has several chronic conditions, including COPD (which requires constant oxygen), and diabetes. He struggled with maintaining blood sugar levels and had “black outs” resulting in falls and injuries. Although his doctor was not concerned, his JFS case manager was. She advocated for Albert with his doctor and the county. She secured skilled nursing visits and obtained a cane, pillboxes and a shower bench —
he was unable to get into his bathtub and had not bathed for months. The JFS case manager scheduled homemaking services, a personal care assistant and Meals on Wheels. Albert did not have laundry access in his building, and had not done his own laundry for over 4 months! Through his case manger’s persistence, Albert eventually found new, affordable housing, with laundry facilities, an elevator and a walk-in shower. Albert now has the services he needs to lives with dignity.
COUNSELING SERVICES
Imagine being 8-years old and believing that you were the cause of your parents’ divorce. That’s how John felt when he told his mother that he found messages on his dad’s phone to other women. What was once a seemingly perfect life was immediately shattered. John had never even seen his parents fight and he struggled with the guilt of causing their divorce. His mother brought him to JFS for counseling. Our therapist gave John a safe place to process what
happened and reassured him that he was not responsible. Through counseling, John’s parents improved their communications and learned to co-parent and John is learning to be a happy child again.

JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE OF ST. PAUL 2016 ANNUAL REPORT

JFS provided more than 1,100 seniors and people with disabilities with case
management and other supportive services in
2016. Almost 10% of our clients are 90 years
of age or older.
We helped children, adults, couples, and
families by providing more than 500 counseling
sessions in 2016!
CHAPLAINCY SERVICES
JFS’s Chaplaincy Services reaches out to Jews who are unaffiliated and/or isolated from the broader Jewish Community by supporting their emotional and spiritual needs. This program helps reconnect people to their pasts, understand who they are today and learn who they could become. Our program serves lonely elders, Jewish immigrants from the former Soviet Union, people living with dementia, and others on the margin of the Jewish
community. JFS’s Community Chaplain conducted a Passover seder for Jewish inmates at the Shakopee Women’s Prison. One participant, Claire, was so moved by the experience, she broke down sobbing. “This was the first time in years that it felt like I wasn’t in prison,” she said. “Thank you.”

We helped more than 250 people update their resumes, hone
their interviewing skills, search for jobs and secure
employment in 2016.
EMPLOYMENT SERVICES
JFS helps families begin new chapters in their lives. Taylor is a 39-year-old single
mother struggling to provide for her teenage son. She needed to improve her
employment situation and came to JFS for help. A JFS employment specialist
worked with Taylor on creating a resume emphasizing Taylor’s strong work ethic
and people skills. She helped Taylor strengthen her
skills by conducting mock interviews and taught her
time management for conducting her job search. Taylor secured an interview through
a referral from her employment specialist. Her interview was a success and she was
offered a job as a Personal Care Assistant. She is now employed full-time with
benefits and providing for her family.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
Steve has mental health issues which include paranoia. This has resulted in his being
evicted from multiple housing facilities. After one such eviction, he decided he
needed “to find a nice Jewish family that would rent him a room in their home”. He
went from synagogue to synagogue, seeking such a family. A local rabbi recognized
Steve’s mental health issue and referred him
to JFS. We intervened on Steve’s behalf with
landlords and paid his rent while we worked with Steve to find him suitable,
long-term housing. Thanks to JFS, today Steve is living in his own apartment,
where he receives support and feels safe.
JFS provided financial assistance to more than
125 individuals and families in 2016.
For confidentiality, names and photos of clients have been changed

Irv LernerLegacy Society Member
Irv Lerner has been a JFS board member
since 2013. As he became more
knowledgeable about the programs and
services that JFS offers, he became more
involved, including co-chairing its Senior
Advisory Committee. Today, he is one of
the agency’s strongest advocates. “When I
joined the board, I really was not familiar
with most of the programs and services
that JFS offers nor their impact in the
community. Now that I am aware, I am so
impressed with what we can accomplish
to help people. I want to make sure that
JFS will continue to be a vital agency in the
community. That is why I have decided to
make a legacy gift to JFS.”

Service Award Recipient
Rhoda Redleaf exemplifies
the JFS mission: Inspired by
Jewish values, JFS assists
individuals and families by
helping them build on their
strengths to develop the skills
and confidence to meet life’s
challenges with dignity. She is a champion to anyone
who needs her help.
She joined the board of Jewish Family Service of St. Paul
in 2011, serving as the liaison between the agency and
Branching Out in New Directions (BOND). Through her
support, BOND has generously provided scholarships
to JFS’s employment services clients. In addition, Rhoda
encouraged the BOND members to serve tirelessly as
volunteers to our B’yachad program, which Rhoda has
chaired or co-chaired for six years as a member of the
JFS board. This holiday gift program has brightened
the holiday season for more than 1,000 individuals and
families. We are so happy that Rhoda has chosen to give
her precious time to JFS. We look forward to her sharing
her talents with us for a long time to come.
