U.S. LOCATIONS At Fairleigh Dickinson University, you will findtwo locations in northern New Jersey. Onceyou have selected your academic major, you may find that it is offered on both U.S.campuses — giving you the opportunity to choose both the living and learning environ-ment that you like most.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTSRead the Information and ApplicationInstructions section on page 3 and submitthe following:

1. Application – Complete pages 11 thru 14.

2. Transcripts – For first-year bachelor’s degreeapplicants, official transcripts must be sentdirectly from your secondary school (high schooland/or post-secondary institutions) to FairleighDickinson University’s Office of InternationalAdmissions. The transcript should include allcourses in progress. First-year bachelor’s degreeapplicants are required to submit transcriptsfrom each secondary school attended.

Transfer and graduate applicants must submittranscripts from all post-secondary institutionsattended. Individual marksheets showing allattempts are required of applicants whocompleted study in South Asia (India). If youhave completed fewer than 24 semester hoursof university coursework at the time of applica-tion, you must submit an official transcript fromyour secondary school (high school).

For transcripts not in English, a notarized orcertified English translation must accompanythe original transcript. A transcript is officialonly when it is sent directly from an institutionto Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Office ofInternational Admissions, or when it issubmitted with the application in a sealedenvelope stamped by the institution.

FDU will accept credentials sent electronicallyvia Docufide.

Transfer applicants must submit coursedescriptions of all university courseworkcompleted or currently in progress.

3. Recommendations – You should submittwo letters of recommendation, unless other-wise noted. For first-year bachelor’s degreeapplicants, at least one must be written by ateacher or school counselor. For transfer andgraduate applicants, at least one recommenda-tion must be written by a university facultymember or academic adviser. If the applicanthas been out of university for several years, arecommendation from an employer may be

submitted. All letters of recommendationshould be written on letterhead stationery andsubmitted to the Office of InternationalAdmissions either directly from the recom-mender or in sealed envelopes accompanyingthe application.

4. Standardized Test Scores – First-yearbachelor’s degree applicants are encouragedto submit results from the SAT or the ACTdirectly to the Office of International Admissions.While the tests are not required for interna-tional applicants, submission of test scoresoften increases the student’s chance of admis-sion and receiving a scholarship. SAT or ACTscores are required for Col. Fairleigh S.Dickinson Scholarship applicants. Transfer andgraduate applicants with 24 or more semesterhours are not required to submit an SAT or ACTscore. Information concerning these examina-tions can be located at collegeboard.org oract.org.

5. International Student Proof of FinancialResponsibility – Students who are not UnitedStates citizens or permanent residents mustprovide proof of financial responsibility in orderto obtain a student visa. You must submit thefollowing documents and any necessarysupporting materials. All documents must bewritten in English.a) An affidavit of financial support (see page 17) from the person who will befunding your study; andb) A current official bank letter in your nameor your sponsor’s name. The signature of thebank official must attest to the amount ondeposit in U.S. dollars and readily available.

- or -c) A scholarship or government sponsorship award letter in your name. Enclose a signedletter or affidavit of support giving full detailsregarding the promise of support and statethe specific amount of money in U.S. dollars.

6. English Proficiency – Applicants whosenative language is not English are required tosubmit the results of a test of English profi-ciency to the Office of InternationalAdmissions. Students from Antigua andBarbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize,Bermuda, Canada (except Quebec), Fiji,Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Kiribati,Marshall Islands, Mauritania, Micronesia, NewZealand, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St.Vincent and the Grenadines, Solomon Islands,Trinidad and Tobago, and United Kingdom donot need to submit test scores.

The TOEFL (Test of English as a ForeignLanguage) is the most frequently submittedtest. However, applicants may submit theresults of other recognized tests including theIELTS or PTE-A. Undergraduate applicants mayalso submit an SAT.

Applicants who attended an American highschool, college or university for more than twoyears and earned passing grades in Englishcourses may request that the TOEFL entrancerequirement be waived.

PRE-UNIVERSITY PROGRAM (PUP)Undergraduate students who meet theUniversity’s academic requirements for themajor of their choice and who have an inter-mediate level of English proficiency may beconsidered for admission to the PUP. TheEnglish proficiency level required for PUPadmission is determined by one of thefollowing:

1. TOEFL IBT score from 68 to 782. IELTS overall band score of 5.53. An ELS Language Center Certificate of Completion of Level 110 of the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program. (For more information, visit els.edu.)

PUP students take academic courses whileimproving their English language skills, earningup to 11 credits towards their bachelor’sdegree. This innovative structure affords PUPstudents the potential to complete a bachelor’sdegree in just four years.

INTENSIVE ENGLISHThe ELS Language Center, which is hosted bythe University at our Metropolitan Campus inTeaneck, offers intensive English languageprograms. Fairleigh Dickinson frequently offersconditional admission to students who wish to complete level 112 of the ELS intensivelanguage program. INFORMATION AND APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

ALL STUDENTSOur application deadlines are: fall (August)semester - July 1 and spring (January) semester- December 1. (For additional information andexceptions, go to page 4.) All applicants areencouraged to apply as early as possible tomaximize potential for admission and scholar-ship consideration. Applications are reviewedon a “rolling” basis. Admissions decisions areusually sent within three weeks after submis-sion of a complete application.

Applicants may apply for admission duringtheir last year/semester of secondary school oruniversity. Students admitted to the Universityprior to completion of their degree arerequired to submit a final transcript and proofof degree completion in order to enroll atFairleigh Dickinson University. Admission andscholarship offers are provisional pendingsuccessful degree completion at a level consis-tent with the student’s prior demonstratedacademic performance.

Students must maintain high standards ofbehavior and conduct at all times. Misconductthat occurs or comes to light after admission,such as disciplinary action at your highschool/university that leads to suspension orexpulsion, criminal charges or convictions, orother serious behavioral incidents may because for admission to be revoked.

Students seeking a deferral of admission formilitary service or personal reasons shouldmake this request in writing to [email protected]/admissions can be deferred for amaximum of two years. At the time of re-acti-vation of the application, additional documen-tation will be required.

FIRST-YEAR BACHELOR’S DEGREE STUDENTSEducational RequirementsFairleigh Dickinson University will considerapplicants from public or private secondaryschools that are accredited and governmentrecognized. The curriculum may be based ona foreign national or international standard(such as IB or AP) as long as the equivalent ofat least 16 academic (university preparatory)units are completed A General EducationDevelopment (GED) certificate may be consid-ered as well.

The recommended academic units are:• English: 4 units• University Preparatory Mathematics: 3 units• History: 2 units• Laboratory Sciences: 2 units (3 recommended)• Foreign Language: 1 units (2 recommended)• Electives: 4 units (3 should be academic)

It is recommended that applicants to bachelor’sdegree programs in biochemistry, mathematics,computer science, engineering or science shouldhave 3 units of college preparatory mathematics(including trigonometry) and 2 units of labora-tory science. Applicants for engineering tech-nology majors should have 3 units of collegepreparatory mathematics (including algebraand plane geometry) and 2 units of science.

Applicants to a bachelor’s degree in medicaltechnology or nursing should have at least 2 units with a laboratory in biology and in chemistry and 3 units of math.

Advanced StandingFirst-year bachelor’s degree students canqualify for advanced standing for academiccredit earned by the following methods:• Through Advanced Placement (AP) examinations administered each Mayby the College Entrance Examination Board;

• Through the International Baccalaureate (I.B.) program; or

• By requesting transfer credit for advanced secondary school studies. For example,A-level results or the 13th year of education.

Please submit all official exam results upon orbefore your arrival to campus.

TRANSFER STUDENTSTransfer credit may be awarded for courses ata university that is either regionally accreditedin the United States or recognized by the foreigngovernment where the university is located, ifthe study is substantially equivalent to coursesoffered in the desired Fairleigh DickinsonUniversity curriculum and if the study has beencompleted with the equivalent of a grade of Athrough C on the American university gradingsystem. Grades equivalent to C- or D may onlybe eligible for transfer to non-major courses.

Transfer Credit Evaluation Students admitted to most FDU bachelor degreeprograms who previously studied at foreignuniversities will be required to submit a WorldEducational Services (WES) course-by-coursecredential evaluation to be considered for transfercredit eligibility. The WES evaluation must besubmitted upon or before your arrival on campus.*For more information, visit www.wes.org.

Students who have completed courses ataccredited American-style universities over-seas will be evaluated for exemption from thispolicy on a case-by-case basis.

Students who completed coursework in anaccredited college or university in the U.S.must submit all transcripts and grades. A WESevaluation is not required.*Transfer applicants to Nursing or Allied Health programs mustsubmit a course-by-course WES evaluation of your foreign creden-tials at the time of application.

Admitted undergraduate transfer students whosubmit a WES evaluation or U.S. transcript mayrequest an unofficial calculation of the numberof transfer credits awarded at any time duringthe admission process.

GRADUATE STUDENTSApplicants to master’s degree programs fromforeign universities must have completed theequivalent of a four-year U.S. bachelor’s degree.

Three -Year Bachelor’s Degree Holders from South AsiaStudents who have earned a three-year bach-elor’s degree from Bangladesh, India, Pakistanand Sri Lanka seeking:

� Master’s degree programs in Computer Scienceor Management Information Systems or the Masterof Business Administration (M.B.A.) may apply foradmission to FDU’s Bridge Program. Successfulcandidates are admitted as graduate students andare required to enroll in one year of bachelor’sdegree course work before beginning the master’sdegree courses. For details about the BridgePrograms contact the International AdmissionsOffice or visit fdu.edu/bridge.

� Master’s degree programs that do not offer aBridge Program option or those who do not wishto complete FDU’s Bridge Program must completean additional year of study before applying foradmission. This may include the first year of amaster’s degree or a post-graduate diploma (PGD)earned through resident instruction at an accred-ited or government-recognized university.

Three-Year Bachelor’s Degree Holders From Other CountriesStudents who have earned a three-year degreefrom Europe, Australia, New Zealand andothers may be eligible (on a case-by-casebasis) for direct admission to the master’sdegree without additional course work. Students Seeking Graduate Waiver CreditsAdmitted graduate students who wish to apply for course waivers must submit coursedescriptions of previously completed graduatelevel course work which include the following:1. To apply for scholarships, you must submit anInternational Scholarship Application (see page15) along with the Application for Admissionfor International Students. Scholarships areawarded only to newly admitted students, andcurrently enrolled Fairleigh Dickinson studentsmay not apply.

International Student Scholarship: Allforeign citizens may apply for an InternationalStudent Scholarship. The scholarship isawarded to qualified full-time freshmen,transfer and graduate students and theamount of the scholarship is based onacademic merit and demonstrated financialneed. The scholarship may be renewed annuallyat the same level of funding contingent uponsuccessful academic performance. Scholarshipamounts vary and scholarships are awarded atthe time of admission only.

Presidential Scholarship: These full-tuitionscholarships are available to first-time, full-timeundergraduate freshman applicants. Consider-ation will be given to students who have theequivalent of a 3.5 G.P.A. and a qualifying SATor ACT score. A nomination from a Guidance/Career Counselor or an EducationUSA Advisor(fdu.edu/counselornomination) and an essayare required. Students who receive the schol-arship are required to live on campus for theduration of study. A nomination and completeapplication with all supporting documentsmust be received by January 15 for theFall/August semester or November 1 for the Spring/January semester.

Colonel Fairleigh S. Dickinson Scholarship:All foreign citizens and Americans living abroadwho apply as first-year bachelor’s degreestudents are automatically considered for theColonel Fairleigh S. Dickinson Scholarship. Anofficial score on the Scholastic AssessmentTest (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT) isrequired for consideration. The amount of theaward can be significant if the applicant scoreswell on either of these examinations.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship: These awardsrecognize transfer students studying at communitycolleges in the United States who are membersof Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society andhave completed at least 24 credits of college-level work. To qualify for a $18,000 PTK scholar-ship, applicants must submit proof of PTKmembership with their application for admission.The PTK scholarship is annually renewable.

Athletic Scholarships: These scholarshipsrecognize the superior athletic abilities ofstudents participating in NCAA (NationalCollegiate Athletic Association) Division I sportsat the Metropolitan Campus. All recipients aresubject to the Division I rules and regulationsof the NCAA. Awards can range up to fulltuition and housing.

Global Housing Grants (MetropolitanCampus only): First-time undergraduatestudents living in the residence halls at theMetropolitan Campus will be considered for an annual $3,000 Global Housing Grant. Thesegrants, awarded on the basis of academicmerit and financial need, are renewable for up to two years. To be considered for a Global Housing Grant, you must submit theInternational Scholarship Application as well as all required application documents. A limitednumber of these grants are available.

Alumni-Trustee-Faculty Endorsement Grant:A grant of U.S. $1,000 is awarded to enrollingstudents who have been recommended by anFDU graduate, faculty member or trustee of theUniversity. Endorsements must be made inwriting and submitted at the time of application.(See inside back cover for the referral form.)Grants are for the student’s first year only.

Children of Alumni Grant: An annual grant ofU.S. $1,500 is awarded to sons and daughtersof Fairleigh Dickinson University alumni.

Family Grant: A grant of U.S. $1,500 is offeredto each child of the same family enrolled full-time simultaneously.

ELS English Language Center Grant: Awardsof up to $5,000 per year are available to gradu-ates of ELS level 112 (certain restrictionsapply). ELS students who qualify for a merit-based scholarship greater than $5,000 per yearwill not receive the ELS grant.

On-Campus Employment: There are on-campus jobs which become available to allstudents on a competitive basis. While jobs are not plentiful, international students mayapply for them when they become available.International students are not guaranteed a job and should not include an on-campus job in their financial planning to cover the cost ofattendance at the University. In addition, thenumber of research and teaching assistantshipsis very limited and highly competitive.

Payment Plan: Fairleigh Dickinson offers a payment plan to qualified students. Uponarrival at the University, you may visit theEnrollment Services Office to apply. If eligible,you may pay for your annual expenses in eightmonthly installments as opposed to the usualtwo payments prior to each semester.

UNDERGRADUATEConditional admission is available for all bach-elor degree programs. Students who areacademically admissible to the major of theirchoice but who do not meet the University’sEnglish proficiency requirement for directadmission (see page 2) may apply for FDU’sPre-University Program or for conditionaladmission through the ELS Language center.Both programs are offered at FDU’sMetropolitan campus.

Pre-University Program (PUP)First year students with a TOEFL IBT score from68 to 78, an IELTS overall band score of 5.5 or acertificate of completion of ELS English forAcademic Purposes (EAP) level 110 may applyto FDU’s PUP which is specifically designed forstudents with an intermediate level of Englishproficiency. PUP students take academiccourses while improving their English languageskills, earning up to 11 credits towards theirbachelor degree in their first semester. Go tofdu.edu/pup for more information.

Transfer students may be considered foradmission to FDU’s PUP on a case-by-case basis.

Fairleigh Dickinson University considers citizens of all nations for scholarship assistance based on academic merit and on demonstratedfinancial need. In a few cases, merit-only scholarships are awarded. Scholarships are awarded for up to four years for a bachelor’sdegree, and for up to two years for a master’s degree, provided that the student meets the appropriate requirements and makessatisfactory academic progress. Annual increases to awards are not available.

International scholarships are the main source of University funding available to non-U.S. citizens. Additionally, students may apply for on-campus employment and may work up to 20 hours per week.

Deadlines: International scholarship applications received prior to July 1 will receive priority consideration for the academic yearbeginning with the fall semester. 1. When should an application be submitted to the Office of InternationalAdmissions?

Applications are accepted up to one yearprior to the intended entering semester.All applicants are encouraged to sendapplications and credentials as early aspossible. Early applicants increase theirchance of admission to competitiveprograms and can enhance the probability of locating a residence hall room.

2. May I apply for admission for anysemester during the academic year?

While most new international studentsbegin their studies during the fallsemester which begins with arrival duringthe last week of August, it is possible toapply for admission for the springsemester which begins in late January.International transfer and graduatestudents may also request admission forthe summer session and may be admittedonly if the appropriate courses are avail-able. Otherwise their applications will beconsidered for the following fall semester.

4. When will I receive an admissions decision?

After the Application for InternationalAdmission is received and complete with all required credentials and documents, anadmission decision is usually sent withinthree weeks or less.

5. How are international admission decisions made?

Admission decisions are based on anapplicant’s academic credentials andproficiency in English. For an applicant who requires a student visa, the ability to finance his or her studies at FairleighDickinson University is also considered.

If a student is academically admissible to a degree program, the admissions committee then determines how academi-cally strong the student is compared toother applicants.

6. Must I take a test of English proficiency?

Students who are applying for conditionaladmission (see page 8) are not required tosubmit a test of English proficiency.

Applicants whose native language is not English are required to demonstrateproficiency in English. Citizens from thefollowing countries are exempt: Antiguaand Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas,Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Canada(except Quebec), Fiji, Grenada, Guyana,Ireland, Jamaica, Kiribati, Marshall Islands,Mauritania, Micronesia, New Zealand, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincentand the Grenadines, Solomon Islands,Trinidad and Tobago and United Kingdom.

All other students must submit a qualifyingexamination. The following tests and scoreswill be considered for direct admission:

7. Does the University offer conditional admission?

Conditional admission is available to allundergraduate applicants and select grad-uate applicants. Turn to page 8 for moreinformation.

8. I am currently finishing my final year of secondary school or university. Do I have to wait until I finish the year to apply to Fairleigh Dickinson?

No, the University would prefer that youapply during your final year by sending atranscript which includes your mid-yeargrades/marks of your final year. If you are admitted, your admission will beconditional until your final year grades/marks are received and reviewed by theOffice of International Admissions. You willnot be permitted to register for your firstsemester at Fairleigh Dickinson until yourfinal transcript is received.

9. Is the SAT or ACT required for freshman admission?

No, it is not required for internationalstudents or Americans abroad; however itis highly recommended that all freshmenapplicants take the examination. Highscores will enhance the student’s chanceof admission. Also, an SAT or ACT score isrequired to be considered for a ColonelFairleigh S. Dickinson Scholarship.

10. Is the GRE or GMAT required for graduate admission?Most students applying to a master’s or doctoral degree program should submit a GRE or GMAT score. 12. I only have a three-year bachelor’s degree. Can I apply for admission to a master’s degree program?In most cases, a minimum of four years ofundergraduate study, or the equivalent, isrequired for admission. Students with aEuropean Diploma Supplement who havethe required ECTS credits can be consideredfor direct graduate admission. Otherstudents with less than four years whoseek admission to the M.S. in ComputerScience or Management InformationSystems or M.B.A. program may requestadmission to a Bridge Program. If admittedto a Bridge Program, one year of under-graduate course work must be taken as aFairleigh Dickinson University student tosatisfy the four-year requirement.

Students applying to the Bridge Programmust submit GMAT or GRE scores (asrequired by the program) for consideration.

13. Can I receive transfer credits for foreign university courses?

A World Education Services (WES) courseby course evaluation is required fortransfer credit consideration. For moreinformation, go to wes.org.

14. How and when do I apply for a scholarship?

First-time bachelor’s degree/transfer/graduate applicants should submit anInternational Scholarship Application at the same time as submitting anApplication for International Admission.Scholarship and admission decisions aremade at the same time, and notificationsare sent together. First-time bachelor’sdegree applicants are automaticallyconsidered for the Colonel Fairleigh S.Dickinson Scholarship after submitting an admission application and SAT or ACT scores. (See deadlines on page 4.)

15. What happens once I am admitted?

You will need to complete and return amatriculation form and a U.S. $200 tuitiondeposit by the reply date specified in yourletter of admission. If for some reason you are denied a student visa based on your FDU I-20, your $200 will berefunded in full.

As soon as your tuition deposit is received,you will receive detailed informationconcerning your arrival, internationalstudent orientation program, residencehalls and required medical information by email.

16. Can I receive academic credit for high scores on the AP exams, IB tests orGCE Advanced Level results?

After you have been admitted to theUniversity, you may request an evaluationby the Office of International Admissions.

17. Is a residence hall room on campus guaranteed?

Rooms are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. For this reason, it isimportant to apply for admission well in advance of your desired enteringsemester. You may not apply for a residence hall room until after you have been admitted.

18. What is the process for obtaininga student visa?

Once an international student has beenadmitted and provided documented proof of financial responsibility, the Office ofInternational Admissions will issue an I-20student visa form. You must then contactan American embassy or consulate andfollow the procedure to apply for astudent visa. The exact procedure canusually be found on the embassy orconsulate website.

19. I entered the United States on a tourist visa. Must I return home to apply for a student visa?

In most cases, visitor status cannot bechanged to student visa status while youare in the United States.
