Holiday Housewalk | Home 1Bill & Tammy Rogalla547 Linden Avenue, Oak Park

Tammy Rogalla calls her holiday decorating

a labor of love, and notes that her attendance

at many Holiday Housewalks has enabled her

to “pick up an idea or two each year.” These

ideas, adapted to the charm of the 1909 Max

Dunning-designed home sporting a gold, bronze,

champagne and chocolate palate, produce an

enchanting holiday décor.

The Rogalla home is built in the Colonial Revival

style with Tudor Revival influences of stucco

with cross-timbering and tall gables. Holiday

floral arrangements of dried hydrangeas from

the garden, faux magnolias and feathers combine

sparkle with natural elements mirroring the

home’s architectural heritage. The idea is simple

elegance using bold, rich colors to produce a

perfect setting for a family that includes three

grown sons and two beloved golden retrievers,

Bailey and Casey.

In the foyer, gold trees and Christmas packages

complement the beautiful stained glass on the

stair landing and front door. Ease into the living

room where a nine-foot Frazier fir has become a

holiday tradition, although the days of the entire

family – pets included – going to a tree farm to

“Holiday Gilded Glamour”

cut it down are now memories of Christmas

past! Ornaments include mementos of family

trips, handmade school projects and heirlooms

from Bill and Tammy’s families. Each year new

ornaments appear as part of a holiday collection

that each son will take when he leaves to start

his own holiday traditions. Meanwhile, a second

tree in the family room makes clear the interests

of this sports-minded family!

Step into the dining room and enter a glamorous

moment captured in the holiday table set

for Christmas Day with lovely blue and gold

china that is a treasured wedding gift, and an

assortment of greens and trees scattered about

to bring in the outdoor feel of this season.

A recent remodeling produced an amazing

kitchen combining three rooms into a single large

space that spotlights, among its decorations,

a Santa mug collection that began with ones

made by Tammy’s grandmother and grew with

additions by Bill’s mother and the children.

Finally, a chocolate and champagne bar stylishly

awaits holiday guests.

The home is a labor of love, indeed, because the

decorating reflects the tastes and participation

of the entire family with a decided soupcon of

gilded glamour.

Holiday Housewalk | Home 2Lisa & Rick Cederoth546 North Euclid Avenue, Oak Park

Lisa and Rick Cederoth will tell you that every

item in their 1907 Talmadge and Watson home

“contains a memory.” These memories are

“associated with a person, a place, a time in our

family’s history.” They quickly add, “Christmas

is about celebrating our place in God’s family.”

The home is bedecked with nativity tableaus

and figurines serving as reminders of the

reason for the season. Lisa, an avid gardener

and seamstress, grows and arranges most of

the flowers and plantings, and has made the

linens that adorn the home long known as the

McMaster House. The Cederoths and their four

children have occupied the house for the past

eight years, following an extensive 2007 gut and

remodel by another owner.

The hunt for two Christmas trees begins the

day after Thanksgiving. One of the trees is

called the “Christmas bush” because it must

be wide enough to fill the entire front picture

window, and hold the family’s 31-year collection

of ornaments – souvenirs of family trips and

other memorable occasions. The second tree

in the family room is heavy with ornaments

the Cederoth children have made or received.

“Family Memories”

Newly married daughter, Theresa, is lending

her ornaments for the Housewalk, but they will

adorn their new home next year.

The living room mantle, beautifully bedecked

with greens and berries, holds precious nativity

figures that son, Paul, received from his

grandmother, and embroidered silk stockings

await the treats to come on Christmas morning.

The Prairie aura of the home is also reflected in

its lovely furnishings that include a beloved white

oak table and chairs made by Lisa’s father. The

dining table is decorated with linens made by Lisa

and set with plates collected in the 1990s showing

two boats that the two Cederoth sons insist

are ramming into each other. Additionally, the

dining room becomes the site of a culinary feast

reflecting Lisa’s Italian heritage and prepared

by the family, with Rick “who has decided he

is Italian,” assuring the menu includes the

traditional seven fish on Christmas Eve!

This is a home filled with heartwarming

traditions, bold architectural touches and warm

memories that define the joy of the season for all

who live in it and visit at this special time of year.

Holiday Housewalk | Home 3Josephine Porter & Renee Davis907 Elmwood, Oak Park

The Porter-Davis home, built in 1926 with

additions in 1934 and 2016, is a true holiday

house. Santa and Mrs. Santa welcome guests

from the beautifully decorated exterior entrance

bedecked with draped greenery and a handsome

wreath. Small lit trees sit at each dormer window

on the third floor inviting visitors to the warm

and delightful family atmosphere inside.

Beginning with a Thanksgiving feast where family

members and friends find an ornament at each

place to kick off the season, to spending the day

after Thanksgiving getting out a mountain of

seasonal decorations, to making gingerbread

houses and enjoying holiday parties, December’s

purpose is eminently clear!

The family’s three school-age children participate

in layering the festive decorations. The children’s

wooden Advent calendars in the den help them

keep track of and enjoy each day of the season.

And whether it is a model train or a hand-made

tree or an ark overflowing with a first-grader’s

favorite animals – the decorations clearly signal

that children live here who have much to enjoy.

Family stockings – all but one needlepointed

“Christmas Old and New”

by Josephine’s mother – grace the living room

mantle, which is decorated with greenery, fruit,

pinecones and hydrangeas show the family’s

combined Yankee and Southern heritage. The

panoply of Christmas cards in the foyer offers

evidence of the family’s friendships.

Renee’s Santa collection punctuates the newly

remodeled kitchen’s decorations, as do window

wreaths and a Christmas village in the great

room. The great room also houses generations

of heirlooms including the “Bee” ottoman

needlepointed by Josephine’s mother, the Foo

Dog pillow stitched by Josephine and the river

landscape painted by Josephine’s grandmother.

Throughout the season the family follows the

“Glitter Box” tradition of writing good deeds on

pieces of paper. On Christmas Eve they open the

box and read the contents “remembering those

special gifts they have given to Jesus.” Then on

Christmas, each member of the family goes on

a treasure hunt all over the house to find their

special Christmas gift.

Long held traditions energized by new customs

growing out of this active family weave together

a Christmas tapestry that renews the old and

roots the new to produce a joyful season for

all and build wonderful memories for every

Christmas to come.

Holiday Housewalk | Home 4Greg & Lorraine Domanowski1414 Lathrop, River Forest

When Lorraine and Greg Domanowski purchased

their 1929 Tudor, designed by architect Samuel

Bird, they found a house with good bones but

in critical need of Lorraine’s imaginative design

vision. A few years before, a gas explosion two

doors north produced extensive damage. More

than 40 windows and many window frames

were broken or severely damaged. The front

Palladian window had to be completely rebuilt.

The house had been sitting empty from the time

of the explosion.

In a four-year period after purchasing it, the

Domanowskis meticulously renovated the house,

taking care to stay true to its English and French

roots. The result: a home of casual elegance

highlighted by dramatic architectural features.

At holiday time, each room imprints its own

personality with distinctive decorations.

Even before entering the house, the extended

family that joins the Domanowskis for Christmas

Eve and Christmas Day, can’t miss the chimney

sporting a sailing ship guided by the winter stars.

The star theme continues in pots of evergreen

that frame the doorway. The foyer invites looking

skyward to the 17½-foot ceiling before entering

“Starry Night”

the living room whose mantle is festooned with

stars. Greg, a mechanical engineer, found a

complicated but reliably sure tree stand called

“Crooked Straight” to hold up the magnificent

12 to 14-foot tree he places at the front window

each year. The tree hasn’t toppled yet!

Just a step past original cut-glass doors, the

dining room awaits Christmas Eve guests with

a hearty repast of soup and bread – a family

tradition, anticipating the grand feast of

Christmas Day! In the meticulously renovated

kitchen there’s strong hint of the next day’s

feast with gingerbread houses and sugared

fruit wreaths standing among a collection of

chef nutcrackers. Then Christmas Day brings

many of the family’s Polish favorites including

sauerkraut, sausage, dumplings and scrumptious

pierogis. Yum!!

Meanwhile, Mrs. Claus awaits guests in her

nearby feminine pink and green dressing room

where walls of windows reflect light, and

highlight Mrs. Claus’s own Christmas tree.

This is a house for entertaining…certainly

because of its many dramatic features and its

welcoming traffic pattern, but also because

the spirit of hospitality offers a warm and

comfortable place in which to curl up and watch

snowflakes gently falling throughout the season.

Holiday Housewalk | Home 5Jean Buckley & Dennis Michon930 Keystone Avenue, River Forest

The Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie Style of

Architecture endures in the more recently-

built home of Jean Buckley and Dennis Michon.

The low-pitched roof, wide over-hanging eaves,

central chimney, open floor plan, and banded

casement windows are unmistakable! At

holiday time the clean lines and simplicity of

the home provide a perfect palate for elegant

and welcoming décor that endures throughout

the season.

The family’s holiday season begins on the

weekend of Thanksgiving, when the two grown

sons who live on opposite coasts happily return

for the holidays, and join the parents in forging

into the crowd to do a bit of Christmas shopping

for the family grab bag. The weekend is also the

time to buy and decorate the fragrant evergreen

tree and put up other decorations to get the

house ready for a round of entertaining. This

year the annual Book Club Christmas Party will

look forward to the club’s selecting its 100th

book in February!

Christmas Eve gathers together the extended

family – every fourth year, including 2016, at

“The ‘Wright’ of Christmas”

the Buckley-Michon home. The decorations this

year will be an especially fun surprise for the

family. Jean held the winning “Frank Lloyd Wright

Celebration Tablescape” ticket at the Infant

Welfare Society Holiday Market last year, and

the gracious dining room table will be covered

with this beautiful setting.

Christmas Day commences with a homemade

streusel coffee cake and opening gifts under

the tree. It’s a typically quiet day spent reading,

trying out and enjoying new gifts and cooking

together in the beautiful open concept kitchen

where the thematic octagon is repeated in the

welcoming custom made table and trim above.

This is a house where meticulous care has

been taken with every detail. Whether it is the

overhead light in the foyer that replicates the

stained glass on the door, the Wright-favored

built-in cabinetry in the dining room, the

luxurious Stickley carpets in the family room,

the gingko leaves on the lowered ceiling, or the

octagonal door knobs throughout the house,

nothing is left to design chance.

Equally important, the elegance and charm

of the home adds a special touch to holiday

celebrations, especially to the coming together

of the family members.

Welcome to the Oak Park River Forest Infant Welfare Society’s (IWS) 18th Annual Holiday

Housewalk & Market! We are delighted for you to join us as we celebrate the holiday season

during this historic Centennial Anniversary of the Oak Park River Forest Infant Welfare Society

and reflect upon the achievement of positively impacting the lives of thousands upon thousands

of children and families throughout the past century.

However, we are not a group to rest on our laurels. In anticipation of this momentous occasion, we

have spent considerable time contemplating our future recognizing that the society in which we

now live and the communities we serve continue to change. We have emerged from this process

reinvigorated and more committed than ever to the one constant we can control; that being, our

steadfast commitment to ensuring the health and well-being of children.

The IWS Board of Directors and membership extend our most gracious appreciation to all who have

helped to grow and evolve IWS over the years. We invite you to be a part of our next 100 years in

caring for the health and well-being of children in need - join, donate and volunteer for IWS today!

Happy Holidays!

Welcome & Thank You for Your Support

Join. Donate. Volunteer.

We are a diverse member-driven organization committed to assuring the health and well-being

of children. Through our IWS Children’s Clinic we provide the highest quality medical, dental and

social services to underserved low-income children from infancy to age 18. Our work is powered

by dedicated members and volunteers, a highly competent professional staff, generous donors,

engaged partners and enlightened communities who share our view that sustaining the health of

our community’s at-risk children is a critical investment in the future.

Join. We invite you to join our group of dedicated members. Passionate people who believe in

and support the organization, its mission and its programs, including the IWS Children’s Clinic.

Donate. The Oak Park River Forest Infant Welfare Society’s need for funding is a function of

the economics of operating a not-for-profit health clinic. There will always be a gap between what

it costs to provide medical, dental and social services to our low-income patients and what the

Children’s Clinic receives for providing those services. Our IWS Children’s Clinic served over 3,400

children in over 10,000 visits in 2015.

Volunteer. We are always in need of volunteers to help with fundraising endeavors. If you

have time and an interest to give ~ we would love to have you be a part of our group of volunteers.

100 Years of Healthy Kids

For one hundred years, the Oak Park River Forest Infant Welfare Society has provided

quality care to families throughout our community. We began by providing clean

milk to infants and now provide a range of medical, dental, and behavioral health

services to families who cannot afford private care.

Our incredible group of members and supporters make this work possible. Your

willingness to volunteer time, talent, and treasure is invaluable. It ensures that the

OPRF IWS Children’s Clinic can continue to help children enjoy healthier, happier

childhoods.
