Page 3: 2016 - To Prevent Blindness and Preserve Sight | Prevent ......That’s why the mission of Prevent Blindness -- to prevent blindness and preserve sight – is so important to each

How often do we stop to consider the wonder of our gift of sight? Our eyes are our mind’s portal to taking in the beauty of the world around us, the faces of loved ones and the information that is constantly around us to inform our decisions and actions.

That’s why the mission of Prevent Blindness -- to prevent blindness and preserve sight – is so important to each of us. Prevent Blindness sees the opportunity in educating Ohioans about the importance of healthy vision. When our vision is appreciated, we take action to care for it, so that we can enjoy healthy sight for a lifetime.

Our focus is on the future and addressing the half of vision loss that is preventable through early detection and treatment and use of protective eyewear at work, home and play. This includes training vision screeners, advocating for policies that widen access to eye care services, providing access to donated eye exams and glasses for the disadvantaged, educating the public and supporting vision research.

Thanks to the support of Prevent Blindness volunteers, staff, donors and partner organizations for making it possible for thousands of Ohioans to engage in programs and services that protect and preserve their “time to see” into the future. The work of Prevent Blindness is more important than ever before!

We are pleased to present you with the results of our sight saving programs that served over 1,000,000 Ohioans of all ages and walks of life this past year.

We thank you for joining us in our fight to protect our “time to see.” It is only through your continued support and partici-pation that we will see a day that preventable vision loss is eliminated.

Sincerely,

Mike D’Ippolito Sherill K. WilliamsChair President & CEOBoard of Directors

of Programs and Research to Save Sight

Ohio Delegates Kathy McGinnis (Worthing-ton), Sherry Lewis (Orient), Dr. Dean Van-Nasdale (Columbus), Marc Molea (Colum-bus) and Sherry Williams (Bexley) joined delegates from across the country for the eleventh annual Prevent Blindness “Eyes on Capitol Hill” advocacy day in June in Washington, D.C.

Aging Eye Summit: Vision for Tommorow

The Aging Eye Summit was held on June 15 at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) and had over 100 participants representing vision researchers, clinicians, public health, aging net-work and rehabilitation professionals. The theme of the conference, “Vision for Tomorrow,” raised awareness about reducing vision loss through ed-ucation, early detection and treatment.

Prevent Blindness Receives Standards For Excellence Certification

The Ohio Affiliate of Prevent Blindness (PBO) re-ceived the Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organiza-tion’s (OANO) Standards for Excellence recertifica-tion in May 2016. PBO was among the first three of Ohio’s nonprofit organizations to receive this certi-fication in 2003 and underwent a rigorous “check up” again this past year to maintain the certifica-tion for the next five years.

The goal of the Standards program is to increase the public’s trust in Ohio’s nonprofit organizations and to provide potential donors and volunteers with nonprofits which act ethically and are accountable in their program operations, governance, human resources, financial management and fundraising practices. There are currently 35 Ohio nonprof-its that are certified under the program among 40,000+ nonprofit organizations around the state.

PBO sponsored a Fireworks Safety Press Confer-ence on July 1 to educate Ohioans about the dangers of backyard fireworks. There are 11,000 people treated in emergency departments for fireworks injuries annually. 20% of injuries are to the eye and 33% are to children.

Trisha Holsinger (left), pictured with PBO Board Member, Rhoe Fields, spoke about the loss of her parents in 2014 due to a firework that set their home on fire in Lawrence County.

PBO leads a statewide Fireworks Safety Coa-lition that educates policy makers about the dangers of legalizing discharge of backyard fireworks in Ohio, which has been banned for decades.

Serving Ohioans April 1, 2016 - March 31, 2017

PBO partnered with Allergan to present The Ohio See America event on April 8th at the Eldon & Elsie Ward Family YMCA in Columbus. Jeff Hogan, WBNS-TV Anchor and “Commit to Be Fit” leader made a special appearance and tested our “eye-healthy” food.

Various activities were available to the public including a vision screening, a cooking demonstration of eye healthy foods, Ask the Expert table and an opportunity to share why your vision is important to you. Even Merlin the Wise Owl made an appearance.

Proclamations commemorating Prevent Blindness Day were received from Governor John Kasich and Lt. Governor Mary Taylor, Ohio Senate President Larry Obhof, Ohio Speaker of the House Cliff Rosenberger, Congresswoman Joyce Beatty and State Representative Bernadine Kennedy Kent.

PBO volunteer, Dr. Jackie Davis, provided Senator Bob Hackett (London) a vision screening at the PBO Legislative Breakfast Reception on Capitol Square in February.

PBO trained and certified 220 adult vision screeners last year who screened over 20,000 Ohioans for risk factors that could indicate an eye problem. 3500 individuals were referred to eye care specialists for follow up.

PBO Educates The Ohio General Assembly About Sight Saving Services For Their Constituents

Prevent Blindness recognizes the generosity of our friends in optometry and ophthalmology and in the vision industry for donating products and services to the Vision Care Outreach Program -- our system of donated eye care for Ohio’s uninsured and underinsured is one of the largest voluntary statewide “virtual free clinics” for eye care in the United States. In 2016, vision of 4,494 needy clients was saved through this comprehensive system of donated eye care, which include eye exams, eye glasses, medications and surgeries.Donating Optical CompaniesAmerica’s BestGeauga VisionOneSight SM – A Luxottica Group FoundationSelect OpticalToledo OpticalVisionworksVSP – Sight for StudentsVSP – Mobile EyesVSP Lab – Columbus

Dr. Philip Apfel has been donating five eye exams monthly to PBO clients who are unin-sured or underinsured since 2004. Dr. Apfel is the director of his practice, Oakley Square Eye Associates in Cincinnati and is a mem-ber of the Ohio Optometric Association.

Because of volunteers like Dr. Apfel, PBO was able to provide access to comprehensive eye care services – eye exam, eye-glasses, medication and surgery (if necessary) to 4,492 dis-advantaged Ohioans of all ages this past year.

Spolight On Our Donating Doctor!

“Just before entering kindergarten, my daughter Raelyn had her eyes screened at a clinic. She needed glasses. We had no insurance at all! Nancy Frankfort at the Seneca County Health Department signed Raelyn up for the Prevent Blindness pro-gram and were able to get her glasses soon after.

Months into her kindergarten year, we received a note from the school nurse that Raelyn had failed her vision screening. Prevent Blindness provided an appointment with Dr. Kip Newell, a VSP provider who saw her the next day. She was diagnosed with Amblyopia. She was prescribed patching therapy with patching supplies from the Ohio Amblyope Registry. Raelyn was successful in improving her vision! Without Prevent Blindness, we would struggle in paying for Raelyn’s exams and glasses. We can’t thank this program enough for allowing her to shine! Thank you!” - Marnie Hahn
