Introduction Cleveland’s Community Gardening program, Summer Sprout, has been in existence since 1976. The City of
Cleveland and Ohio State University Extension, Cuyahoga County (OSUECC) partnered in 1977 and continue to work
together to make the program a success.
The Summer Sprout program provides soil testing, seeds,
starter plants, soil amendments, tilling services, raised bed
materials, educational outreach and support to participating
gardens. OSUECC works with community partners, including
the City of Cleveland Land Bank, who develops land tenureship
for garden sites. In 2016, Summer Sprout supported 22 new
community gardens in the City of Cleveland, adding to the 172
that returned from the 2015 growing season. Community
gardens in Cleveland are diverse; neighborhood clubs, schools,
faith-based groups, non-profit agencies, and many others.

Summer Sprout Applications for new gardens (Appendix A, page 74) were made available during the
month of September, 2015. Newly enrolled gardens received acceptance letters by mid-October. Soil
tests were taken in October and sent to the University of Massachusetts soil lab to test for lead (Pb), pH,
and nutrient levels. Meetings were held in November with new gardeners to discuss the Summer Sprout
program and how it would support their projects. 2016 Summer Sprout Renewal forms (Appendix B,
page 79) were sent to existing gardens in October of 2015 and were due back to OSU Extension by the
middle of November. This form requested updated contact information, garden information, and service
and materials needs for 2016.
Spring The Annual Garden Leader Kickoff was held on April
9, 2016 at the Slovenian National Home and provided
gardeners with information regarding plant distribu-
tion, tilling, and allowed for networking opportunities.
Gardeners were also able to purchase a hydrant per-
mit and pick up a total of 11,085 vegetable, herb, and
flower seed packets.
On April 19th 60 bare root fruit trees and 446 small fruit plants
(blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries) were distributed to
gardeners at the OSU Extension office. Starting in March soil and leaf
humus (totaling 173 and 97 cubic yards, respectively) were delivered
to 47 Summer Sprout sites. 17 gardens received a total of 122 pieces of
lumber for raised beds. 63 gardens received tilling services through the
program. Plant distribution occurred at Stanard Farm from May 12th-
14th. 52,128 starter plants (tomatoes, peppers, collard greens,
cabbage, and eggplant) were distributed to gardeners.

Summer June through September OSUECC staff and interns conducted 130 site visits to Summer Sprout gardens
throughout the city. Staff were able to troubleshoot problems, give recommendations, and suggest
community resources available to gardens, including grant opportunities and local community develop-
ment corporations. Staff measured overall garden area and production space, took note of structures on
site, and what fruits and vegetables were being grown
on site. The Site Assessment Worksheet can be found
in Appendix E (page 88).
In 2016, OSU Extension, Cuyahoga County held 28 free
workshops focusing on various urban agriculture topics
throughout the county. Workshop topics include seed
starting, youth gardening, fruit tree planting and
pruning, integrated pest management (IPM), com-
posting, hoop houses, cultural crops, and fall planting. Over 225 community members attended these
workshops. The 2016 Summer Sprout application for new gardens was made available during the month
of July 2016. 22 new community gardens were accepted into the Summer Sprout program for the 2016
gardening season.

Fall and Winter In September, season extension workshops where held and
roughly 20 gardens received cover crop seed, and row cover. In
2016 twenty-seven Summer Sprout gardeners graduated OSU
Extension’s eight week Dig-In! community garden training pro-
gram which met once weekly for 2.5 hours January through
March of 2016. 2016 had eleven more graduates than 2015!
Participants learned how to locate and assess sites, organize a
group of gardeners, plan and design a garden, grow vegetables
and fruit, incorporate integrated pest management practices, identify community resources, and increase
neighborhood access to fresh produce. Gardeners had opportunities to network, gain gardening skills, and
confidence. Starting in January 2017 Summer Sprout gardeners will be enrolled in OSU Extension Cuyahoga
County’s Dig-In program.
