BIKE MS

WHY JASON AND I DO THE MS HAWAII RIDEWhen I was in elementary school, I first learned about MS when I took part in the MS Read-a-Thon. Each year, I read every book I could get my hands on to raise funds. My parents and other family members donated a quarter for every book I read. As a teenager, I tutored a student in Algebra and discovered that his mom, Kelly, was living with MS. Often times, I saw the pain she dealt with.

A number of years later, I found myself doing Bike MS Hawai’i for Team Bikeworks. It started off as additional training rides needed for my preparations for the Ironman World Championship in 2011. Since then, I’ve been biking for MS Hawai’i every year!

While I ride, Jason, the bike mechanic, wrenches on the bikes. Usually, you can find him with bike tools in his pocket and a cup of coffee in his hand. He ensures all of the bikes are mechanically sound for the riders. If a rider needs help with his or her bike, Jason happily breaks out the bike stand on the side of the road. Sharing his bike mechanic skills with others is a small part of why he does the bike support yearly. More importantly, when I asked him why he does bike support, he breaks out with a grin and says, “Because I can and it is important to help others.”

Jason and I love helping and meeting new people. Being part of Bike MS Hawai’i has

given us a way of doing both. The Bike MS event gives us a sense of community and way to give back. People come here to ride for MS from all walks of life. Each have a story to share about why they are riding. Every single story fascinates us. Year after year, we look forward to seeing people who have become fast friends. We add to our growing friend list with each ride. Some of them are affected by MS directly and others ride because they have been touched by MS in some way. Five years ago, we met our friends Ted and Claudia. Each year, I look forward to riding with Ted. While Ted and I ride together, Jason and Claudia are the roving bike mechanics.

I ride because I can. I ride for people like Faye, Jessica, and Kelly. MS is part of their daily life. These people are the true heroes and fighters. I ride because raising awareness gives us hope

that someday MS will be cured.

Again you may ask. Why do we do Bike MS Hawai‘i? Because WE CAN. A friend once told me, “If you want change you have to find change.” How do you find change? Look for it and once you find it don’t let go. It’s out there waiting for us. In other words, get off your derriere and do something! So bring it! Go big or go home! Bike MS Hawai‘i.

NEW DATE! OCTOBER 29 & 30, 2016Bike MS: Go BIG! Or Go Home! is a ride that will take you farther than you’ve ever gone before, and we’re excited to announce a new date for 2016! Join us on October 29 and 30 through volcanic rock landscapes, breathtaking ocean views, paniolo ranches, and historical towns reminiscent of old Hawai’i - all to drive MS research forward faster and deliver programs and services to those who face the challenges of MS every day.
