score of 580, singing “Cry Baby” and “What Kind of Fool Am I.” Parfait took a year off

from competition and returned to the stage this year with Karen Kuisel switching to lead and new baritone Sherri Grambergs.

The Orpheum Theater held all the cards for “Luck Be a Lady” for the quartet con-testants on Friday night. C’est la vie proved that they are truly Rising Stars by becom-ing the 2016 Re-

gion 21 Quartet Champions. All members of Scottsdale, C’est la vie continued their meteoric rise singing “The Moment I Saw Your Eyes” and “If You Love Me, Really Love Me.” As contestant #11 they were pleased to sing af-ter intermission, as lead Melanie Barker came directly from her college graduation to compete. C’est la vie earned 613 points, which earned them not only blue ribbons but the Star Achievement Most Improved

Quartet trophy as they raised their score by 28 points.

Appearing last as con-testant #21, SpinOff was singing in their first con-test together. Represent-ing Scottsdale, SpinOff

scored 608 points to earn second place medals and a Wild Card to the International Convention (Vegas II). Singing their contest set of “You Keep Coming Back Like a Song” and a jazzy “You Can’t Take That Away From Me,” SpinOff combines former regional champions in an exciting new configuration.

The first two standing ovations went to third place medalists Ms. Cellaneous. Crossing the stage as con-testant #3, they earned 598 points performing “Hard Hearted Hannah” and “All of Me.” Mary Slade-Branham and Sarah Slade-Branham sing with Scottsdale, and Chris Robertson and Susan Phinney are members of

At the close of the contest season, Region 21 has four quar-tets preparing to compete in Las Vegas in October.

As Region 21’s quartet c h a m p i o n , C’est la vie will compete as contestant

#47. They performed before the quartet finals last year as the 2015 Rising Star Champions. Spin-Off earned the 5th Wild Card so, as in the regional contest, they will be contestant #21. All eight singers are members of Scottsdale and will be performing their outgoing champion

package that week as well.

From contests outside Region 21, the Region 11 Champion Quartet Cachet will be repre-senting Region 21 with bass

Mary Ashford (Harborlites). Cachet is contestant #23. Former Region 21 quartet champions SwingLine will open the quartet semifinals as con-testant #1. With their new tenor Molly Plummer, SwingLine com-peted in Region 19 and scored 621 points to earned the third Wild Card position. Baritone Emily O’Brien sings with Harborlites.

Beyond the Golden West...Last summer, Region 21 was honored to

host the Sweet Adelines International Rising Star Contest. Our own C’est la vie won the contest and began their journey as ambassa-dors of Sweet Adelines and the barbershop art form. They were, and remain, role models and inspirations to everyone in the barber-shop world, well beyond the Golden West.

C’est la vie spent the year fundraising to be able to fulfill their champion duties. They were so efficient, they were able to send funds to Rising Star contestants to help them travel to contest (including 2016 Rising Star cham-pions The Ladies from Region 10). Crowning

a year of wonderful performances (check out YouTube to see a few of these performances at the BHS Mid-winter and International Conventions), C’est la vie traveled to New Zealand’s first international a cappella festival to serve as the outgoing champion and mic testers for the 2016 Rising Star contest. They performed beautifully and even hung out with clinician and a cappella guru Deke Sharon.

Ahhhh – can you feel the Sea Breeze? Welcome to San Diego, Region 21! We are excited to have Karen Breidert at Summer Seminar – Queen of Harmony, Master Director, Master Faculty, past Inter-national President – there will be something for everyone!

As you know, our region is full of talented and awesome women.  Let me tell you about two of them. When you see Jana Gutenson, be sure to congratulate her on being selected by our International Board of Directors as the recipient of the 2016 NAfME (National Association for Music Education)/Sweet Adelines International Educator Award! Not to be outdone, our Patty Cobb Baker is officially President-Elect of our organization. She is in line to be our next International President!

Are you one of those talented and awesome women looking to make your mark? The Region 21 Nominating Committee has formed and is working to find women to serve on the Regional Man-agement Team for the 2017-2019 term. They are seeking candidates for Coordinator roles:  Director,

Events, Finance, Marketing. Perhaps you are interested in getting involved, but not ready to take on a Coordinator position? Reach out to the Nominating Committee or any RMT member to find out more (Nominating Com-mittee:  Chair, Adelina Dudda – OC Sound, Gloria Ives – Vista Hills), and Denise Brinker-hoff – San Diego).

As for me? I am sending vigorous Vegas 2 vibes to Scottsdale (outgoing International C h a m p i o n ) , Harborlites , Song of the

Pines (Harmony Classic mic testers), C’est la vie, SpinOff, Cachet, and SwingLine!  See you there!

Team Coordinator, Tracey Sandberg

I often wonder if our members realize all of the benefits that are available through membership in Sweet Adelines International (SAI). Sure, we understand the opportunity to sing, travel, and share harmo-ny with like-minded people. But what else is out there, beyond our one night a week on the risers?

Did you know that you can login to SweetAdelines.com to access hundreds of education materials including webcasts and podcasts? You can also find information on SAI’s certification programs that drive our members to learn, excel and be recognized for their merits. International and Regional Competitions offer master classes and op-portunities to learn from performances by singers of every skill level. While you’re on the website, you can also find customizable market-ing materials, hundreds of titles of music and music-themed gifts and back-issues of the Pitch Pipe Magazine.

As a Region 21 member, you have direct-access to some of SAI’s greatest educators. Every quarter, the finest talent is brought together to help our members fine-tune our craft. Our dedicated members also contribute to our world-class publication, Golden West Magazine.

This short write up barely scratches the surface of what is available to you. I encourage you to visit the SweetAdelines.com and Region21.org websites to learn more. Of course, you can also ask me anytime! Chat me up in San Diego, or email me at [email protected]. I’m so happy to see all of you who are attending Camp Sea Breeze!

be?  That is the ques-tion I have asked lots of people

in the region and the faculty listed be-low are some of the people on that list.

What an exciting time! We have been busy planning for the next five years and I am pleased to let you know some of what is coming.

For our Camp Sea Breeze Summer Seminar in 2017, we will be having Mo Field as our faculty, then for MusicFest in Albuquerque we will have Interna-tional President Paula Davis!

In 2018 we have tentatively sched-uled Love Notes for our Quartet Work-shop in January; then for our Camp Sea Breeze Summer Seminar we will have Dale Syverson and Peggy Gram!

We also have some exciting things planned for 2019 but they are not yet confirmed…more information coming along soon!

As your Education Coordinator I will be doing my very best to bring you fac-ulty that will inspire and delight you.

Every year at Regional Competition, the judges provide the Region with observations, or trends, in the choruses and quartets. The fol-lowing is a synopsis of what they said this year:Chorus Observations•They felt our vocal skills are “coming along well” but still need to

remain on the front burner.• Interval singing needs to be cleaner and synchronization was an

issue with many competitors.•More depth needs to be added to resonation.• Section unity needs strengthening.• Lower scoring choruses need to focus on barbershop blend.

Individual voices popped out of unit.•More vocal energy needed.• Posture and breath support can always be stronger.• Attention needs to be given to phrasing, tempo and dynamic changes.•More freedom in the performances needed...let the music soar!

Quartet Observations•Vocal skills – always an opportunity for improvement.• Harmony accuracy was pretty good, but musical unity needs addressing.• Learn how to sing without scooping into chords.• Breath support still needs attention.• Fine tuning remains an issue – make all chords sparkling clean.•Higher scoring groups are still mechanical in their delivery...

more freedom needed.•Tempo and rhythm also need attention – lots of groups attempt-

ing slow swing with varied results.• It pays to take a pitch!•More resonance needed.• Barbershop balance and blend still needs to be addressed.• Some quartets were very casual for stage.•Make energy more consistent.

Members of Route 66 Sound are thrilled to participate in Camp Sea Breeze in San Diego! Just one more fun adventure in our summer. In June we partici-pated in the Albuquerque Folk Festival, a day-long gathering of everything musical. We presented a workshop on Women’s Barbershop, performing and teaching tags to women who obviously love harmony. New music is being learned for our October 15th annual show, “Do You Know What it Means to Miss New Orleans?” Join us at Hope Church at 4 PM for another exciting Route 66 Sound performance.

June also brought the New Mexico Youth Harmony Camp. Guest clini-cians C’est la vie were a huge hit!  The final performance included a joint performance of “Why We Sing” with the campers and members of all five Albuquerque barbershop choruses on stage.

Since May, we’ve wel-comed three new members:  Karen Baldoni and Dawn

Fisher, both experienced singers who perform in their own band but new

Summertime and the livin’ is…busy! The San Diego Chorus is learn-ing new music, planning an exciting annual show, and looking forward to celebrating its 65th birthday. All the while, members are honing their musical technique and soaking up every morsel of knowledge from Master Director Kathleen Hansen.

While the chorus may be turning 65, it is young at heart due to the rise of young talent and excitement in our organization. The San Diego Chorus is thrilled to share the stage at its annual show – “A Lot of Livin’ to Do!” – with two quartets that exemplify this very concept: 2014 In-ternational Queens of Harmony LoveNotes, and 2015 Rising Star and 2016 Region 21 Quartet Champions C’est la vie! As of now, the theatre is nearly half-full and tickets are going fast! Head over to sdchorus.org to secure your spot for the September 24th show. Between the star-studded lineup and the beautiful new theatre, this evening is sure to live up to its name!

Then, a month later when the weather finally starts to cool down, the chorus will slip into something a little more sparkly and stroll down memory lane to celebrate its 65th birthday. At the “Thanks for the

Memories” celebration, enjoy an afternoon fashion show of costumes past and take a look back at the music and people that have made the chorus what it is today. Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 29th and raise a toast to 65 more years of barbershop magic together!

n The summer hasn’t meant any vacations for us! We are hard at work fine tuning and adding a ballad to our 2015 Open Division Package that

we will perform as mic testers at the International Har-mony Classic in October. SOTP is also planning to take the package out for a test run on October 8th by offering a free concert. Planning ahead, Anita Miller, Arlene Brownie, Peggy Ricker, and Carol Standley are forming a committee

to work on a show for February 24th – we’re charging for this one! Sheli Salafia has been keeping our Facebook page current, so hope you have a chance to check it out. When you visit a rehearsal, you’ll find a new and very “snazzy” and welcoming table set up by our Membership Chair, Jeanne Zimmerman. We’re hoping to have a membership drive after the holidays, which will include an Open House and voice lessons with

The Enchanted Mesa Show Chorus is still flying high from our regional con-test experience, but we certainly haven’t been resting on our laurels. While in rehearsals this fall for our annual show “Albuquerque Rose, Where Are You?” we’ve also been out there and involved with the community. EMSC has had the opportunity to sing the National Anthem at naturalization ceremonies as well as Isotopes baseball games.

One of the highlights of the summer is always our chance, along with the Albuquerque Barbershop Community Collaborative, to be involved

with the New Mexico Youth Har-mony Camp, and this summer was definitely no exception.  Held at the  New Mexico Institute of Min-ing and Technology in Socorro, New Mexico, we sing and dance with youth from around the state for three and a half days, culminat-ing in a free performance Saturday

afternoon. This year was especially sweet because our special guest for camp was C’est la vie quartet.  Those amazing young women made an impression on male and female campers alike with their vibrant and fun loving person-alities – not to mention their sparkling performances! If they are any indica-tion, the barbershop art form will be happy, healthy, and growing with this generation of performers!

Honolulu Blend Show Chorus is thrilled to introduce our brand new co-directors, Marlyn Hutton and Tracy Brule Southerland!

Marlyn and Tracy come to us with a wealth of experience. Barbershop is in Tracy’s blood; both of her parents sang and her mom, Pat Brule, was a well-known arranger. Tracy has been in SAI for 38 years and is currently a member of the Greater Cleve-land Chorus, San Diego Chorus, and Honolulu Blend Show Chorus. She has competed in a number of quartets and earned a regional championship in 2007. Tracy hopes to build membership and continue education to promote better vocal skills and confi-dence. “Being that Marlyn and I are pretty new directors, having someone to bounce ideas off of is very important and comforting!  I feel we think along the same lines, tend to have similar ideas, and our approach to teaching is pretty close as well. We are both open to new ideas; both of us being baritones also works in our favor!”

Marlyn joined SAI in 1987 in Hawaii. In Virginia she sang with Maryland Harmony and Harbor City Music Company; in Se-attle, she sang with a cappella Joy before returning to Hawaii. Marlyn directed Na Leo Lani and was an assistant director in Maryland Harmony. Marlyn thinks she and Tracy both recog-nize they don’t have all the answers but they are willing to con-tinue learning. “My goal for the chorus is to continue to build a positive culture through learning and improving our singing craft to help perpetuate this art form! I have been blessed to have sung in four wonderful choruses before joining Honolulu Blend Show Chorus and my network of friends through those choruses con-tinue to be a part of my life.”

Honolulu Blend Show Chorus Honolulu, HI

As our champion year rushes toward the finish line, the Scottsdale Chorus is still running strong! We are preparing an exciting out-going package that we can’t wait to sing for everyone in Las Vegas this fall.

We just finished an amazing coaching session with Aaron Dale en route to recording our new CD Sing! which will be released at our up-coming show,  “Sing!...Party Like You Won the Gold.”  We hope you’ll join us October 2nd at the Chandler Center for the Arts. Tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster or the box office.

This will truly be a gold medal show as we feature current Queens of Harmony Speed of Sound and the 2016 Region 21 Quartet Champi-ons, our own C’est la vie!

We couldn’t be prouder of these four amazing young women.  Through their year as Rising Star Champions, they have traveled the country and fund-raised their way to New Zealand as gracious and dedicated ambassadors for the music we love.

We are also incredibly proud of all nine of our chapter quartets who

competed at Regional Competition. Congratulations to our other med-alists: Ignite (Novice), Boomerang (5th), Ms. Cellaneous (3rd) and SpinOff (2nd).  We can’t wait to cheer for both SpinOff and C’est la vie when they compete in Las Vegas in October!

All in all, 2016 has been a gold-medal year for the Scottsdale Cho-rus, and it’s not over yet! Check our website at ScottsdaleChorus.org for more details about our show and CD sales.

Region 21 “stacked the deck” all weekend long as singers crossed the stage in “Luck Be a Lady.” The historic Orpheum theater in downtown Phoenix hosted the annual convention and competition last May. San Diego became the 2016 chorus champions scoring 670 points.

They will be returning to Las Vegas, Nevada for “Vegas III” in October 2017, this time competing as the regional champion. Singing first, Tucson Desert Harmony earned second place medals with a score of 588, which also earned them first place Division AA (mid-size) chorus honors. Enchanted Mesa Show Chorus moved up from fifth to third place overall and second place Division AA with a score of 574, which also earned them the coveted Most Improved Chorus award (+128 points).

Fourth place medals were earned by Inland Empire Chorus, with a score of 539 (second place Division AA). With 28 singing members on stage, Southwest Vocal Project came in fifth overall and won the Division A contest with a score of 515.

Second and third place Division A medals went to Song of the Pines Chorus and Route 66 Sound Chorus, which scored 505 and 504 points respectively. No choruses chose to compete in the Open Division this year, so there were no Audience Choice winners for 2016.

It was a weekend-long winning streak in Phoenix, Arizona for “Luck Be a Lady” Spring Conven-tion and Competition. Too many “winning hands” to recap here — so here are some “World Series of Poker”-style highlights:

Harborlites served as hostess chapter, working hard behind-the-scenes at the Renaissance Hotel and the Orpheum Theater. This was the second year of the conven-tion at these facilities, with lots of improvements as we gain experience at the venue. On Thursday, Club 21 held a meeting and rehearsal in preparation for the weekend’s kick-off event: the Club 21 Show and Quartet Jamboree. The show was hosted by SparX (the configuration that last won the regional championship in 2003). Stepping in for absent

members of 2015 champion Delilah, Pam Pieson and Am-ber Carroll performed with Erin Basile and Merideth Frehner on the Club 21 show and also performed during the quartet contest.

On Friday, the historic Orpheum theater was put through its paces in the auditorium in-spection and briefing. A Friday education class returned to the schedule

– “Using Tags as Tools” – led by Master Director Kath-leen Hansen. Immediately preceding the quartet contest,

the Orpheum outside patio played host to the

Mass Sing. Singers from throughout the region came together to sing selections from the Mass Sing Songbook, and to honor Sharon Orsi, director of Vista Hills Chorus, who earned her director certification.

Both contest sessions were shared with the entire world through the Region 21 webcast. Friday’s quartet contest was hosted by Connie Noble and Sandy Shelver. On Saturday, the hostess duties fell to Lori Lyford and Jana Gutenson. A new company hosted the webcast, using multiple cameras and high definition technology.

After Saturday’s chorus competition, RMT Team Coordinator Tracey Sandberg presented the 2016-2017 Regional Management Team and thanked outgoing team member Risa Page for her service.

Tracey then presented this year’s inductee into the Region 21 Hall of Fame. Recognized for her “profound impact on the entire membership of Region 21,” this year’s inductee was Connie Noble lifetime member of the San Diego Cho-rus. Among her many accomplishments, Connie earned four quartet champion crowns (The 4th Edition, High Society, Savvy, Fanatix) and chorus gold with San Diego. She served as a section leader, Assistant Director, and Director of the San Diego Chorus. At the regional and international level, she is a frequent coach, webcaster, and faculty member.

After dinner on Saturday night, the fun moved to the Renaissance Hotel for the Harmony Showcase and Afterglow. Region 21 enjoyed special performances by 2015 Rising Star Champions (and new re-gional champion) C’est la vie and 2016 International Chorus Cham-pion Scottsdale. The Most Improved Quartet Award Star Achieve-ment trophy was presented to C’est la vie and the Novice Quartet plaque was presented to Ignite.

To close the weekend on Sunday morning, the coffee bar was open for “Judges Café: Cof-fee and Scoresheets” presented by Showmanship Judge Becki

What a year it has been for C’est la  vie! We have worked hard all year and our dedication has brought us success that we could not even imagine. We have been

involved in a number of youth festivals and shows that have allowed us to make so many new connections and friendships.

We recently returned from New Zealand for the Ris-ing Star Contest which showcased excellent talent. We congratulate our friends The Ladies on their well de-served win. We have had such an incredible year and we wouldn’t be where we are without the support of Region 21. We are so grateful to you and we can’t wait to see you all in Vegas!

–Caitlin, Melanie, Krista, Taylor

Everyone in our SOH chorus really enjoyed being able to experience the excitement of being a competitor in our Re-gion Competition this spring! We all survived  the heat of Phoenix too!

In June and July we’re happy to have had several perfor-mances through out the local communities here. We have several of our singers attending the Region 21 Camp Sea

Breeze Summer Seminar in San Diego in August.  Looking forward to a fun and great learning experience! In September we’re having our annual Ice Cream Social and performance – a fun show for us and the audience!

See you soon.–Char Nelson

Hi friends! We were thrilled to place second in our very first Region 21 contest, and excited and surprised to have won a Wildcard spot to compete this October. We re-connected with long time friends at regional and made many new friends, as we wan-dered about on Saturday night, singing with other quartets at various parties. The Re-gion 21 contest is just the best in every way! We are so proud to represent Re-gion 21, along with our quartet win-ners, C’est la vie and Harborlites in Vegas II. Woot!

We are having a great summer, having made a “few” adjustments to our schedules.  We are learning new music, working the details, finding music we have always wanted to sing, and having fun as a quartet. As every quartet member knows, it’s the friend-ships that develop that make quartet-ting worth all of the extra rehearsals and preparation.

Fun facts about SpinOff! We seem to have an affinity to the number 21. We are from Region 21. We were competitor #21 in our most recent contest. But here is where it gets weird. We were ranked 21st overall in the regional quartet competitions during the 2016 regional season, and we drew competitor #21 at the International Contest in October. So there it is. Is the universe telling us something?

Please follow us on Facebook at Spinoffquartet or on Twitter as @SpinOffqtet.– Jana, Lori, Chris, and Erin

What a terrific region we compete in! With many tal-ented choruses, we were pleased to finish in first place for mid-size and second place overall at regional this May.

Following the celebration for our installation of offi-cers in early July, we’re hard at work with preparations for the annual show. We’ll be singing on Sunday, No-vember 12 at 2:00 p.m. at St.  Andrews Church, 7575 North Paseo del Norte, in Tucson. And, of course, many members are busy getting ready for summer fun at Camp Sea Breeze in San Diego, August 19 - 21. Will one of our double quartets win the coveted Golden Banana trophy (again)?

To encourage new membership and share the joy of singing, we’ll be sponsoring a holiday chorus, where

prospective members can sing out with us! We hope to see a lot of new faces.

And we want to congratulate our esteemed coach,

Quartet, 4th place region-al medalists, presented an intro-

duction to barbershop music, with each member singing her individual part line and demonstrating the hallmarks of our art form. Using the information they

had heard, guests chose voice parts and joined the chorus on the

risers to sing several songs. In honor of the 4th of July holiday, chorus members dressed in red, white, and blue. There were refreshments for all, and door prizes for the guests. Ev-eryone enjoyed the evening and we have had some new faces at our recent rehearsals!

And more sharing news! We were happy to give two small group performances this season. One was a well-attended dinner show for a Homeowner’s Association held just before the 4th of July. Wearing red, white, and blue outfits, the chorus sang several patriotic songs and held a group a sing-a-long. We also provided entertain-ment at a morning meeting of the AARP, spreading the word about Sweet Adelines at a local Senior Center.

We love to share what we do!–Marge Yeager

Summer days in Sedona usually aren’t conducive for too many vigorous activities, but they haven’t discouraged Red RockAppella from being on the move.

The undaunted chorus re-cently welcomed enthusias-tic new member and strong lead Mary Patton.

Since nearly a third of RRA’s members are new or returning-new, the chorus began working on several songs from its repertoire af-ter we returned from compe-tition in May.

A program of patriotic songs on the Fourth of July thrilled an appreciative audience at the Sedona Winds Assisted Living facility.

The Beatles’ classic, “Eight Days a Week,” is a new song just introduced to the chorus.  More new songs are in the wings.

Preparations are underway for a fall coaching retreat, a membership drive in Sep-tember, and an October fundraiser.

Our small chorus already boasts a competing quartet, Sedona Singchrony, with Linda Patterson, Sandy Wingate, Jean Dixon, and Nancy Martin, but another new quartet is in the works. Stay tuned.

And stay cool!–Sue Williams

Is it Tuesday yet? You will hear this question chorus-wide each week as we antici-pate another fabulous rehearsal. OC Sound is loving the look and feel of our new name and our new attitude!

It was delightful to reunite with our Region 21 sisters at May’s competition in Phoe-nix. It was OC Sound’s first competition with Bonnie McKibben directing us, and it was

wonderful!We had the exceptional opportunity

to perform a patriotic set for the Memo-rial Day celebration at Fairhaven Memo-rial Park in Santa Ana to an audience of 4,000. To the delight of all in attendance, a flock of white doves was released as we concluded singing “God Bless America.”  We’re thrilled to have been invited to re-turn for next year’s celebration!

Plans are underway for our annual show to be held on Saturday, December 10 at Capistrano Valley High School (26301 Via Escolar, Mission Viejo, CA). As the date suggests, we are planning a holiday show with Frenzy as our guest artists! Stay tuned for more information.

We send our very best to Scottsdale, Harborlites, C’est la vie, SpinOff, Swing-Line, and Cachet as they take the stage in Las Vegas in October.

We invite you to check out our new Facebook page, follow us on Instagram, or go to our website at ocsound.org.

Hello, hello from the Vista Hills Chorus! This year has been dedicated to growth in sisterhood and harmony and we have

been so very blessed  to work with not one but two star coaches: Kim Vaughn and Gerry Papa-george. Their influences have helped us to focus on sound production and meeting our goals, two things we have been striving to improve on both the individual and chorus levels.

More locally, we installed our team members one week post-competition with the assistance of Adelina Dudda of the newly dubbed OC Sound Chorus. Debra Kerrigan took the helm as team leader and was recognized as our chapter’s Sweet Adeline of the Year.  Debra has been absolutely invaluable since she joined, and we are truly grateful for the guidance and friendship she has ceaselessly offered to each of us. We are equally indebted to the retiring team members and to the recently initiated. We have every faith that the new team will lead our chorus in the right direction.

Looking forward, we have several exciting events coming up. On September 3 we will have a garage sale fundraiser; and on November 12, our second annual holiday show, titled “Destination Harmony – First Class.”  Until then, safe travels!

We’re still catching our breath from Region 21’s fabulous competition. Costumes are back in their closets, sparkles have been vacuumed, eyelash glue has come off, photos have been received, and plans are being made for next year’s fete.

GWM the Cellaneous Sistahs were chosen to represent the Los Angeles area in the Harmo-ny Sweepstakes National Finals in San Fran-cisco, May 14th. We zipped into Phoenix for the Quartet Jamboree and the Quartet Con-test on May 12th and 13th. After gathering up our new third place medals to the thunderous applause of three standing ovations from our regional friends and family we caught a flight to San Francisco. We arrived just in time to do a radio spot on ACAVILLE an a cappella inter-net radio station. Then we hurried over to the auditorium to set the mics for our individual voices. Singing on the individual mics was a great experience for the Sistahs. We have big booming voices to start; amplify them and you have the potential to rock the house, especially with the overtones that come out of good bar-bershop. We had a great time and successfully pulled off a national 3rd place medal at the Harmony Sweepstakes. After the contest we hung out in San Francisco for a few extra days. We sang at Ghirardelli Square, the Wharf, Al-catraz, Lombard Street, Haight-Ashbury, Chi-natown and the Golden Gate Bridge. We are looking forward to hostessing the Harmony Sweepstakes LA division on April 1st, 2017 as the outgoing champs and look forward to sharing a few songs with the region at Summer Seminar in August.

Seas the Breeze! It’s been a whirlwind few months for Cachet. Since Spring Regional, parts of the Cachet have been sighted in such faraway destinations as England, Scotland, Ice-land and Greenland.

In July, Cachet was featured on the Region 11’s Summer Sizzler Show. Also featured was Carpe Diem Chorus, directed by Mary Ash-ford, Bass of Cachet. Carpe Diem Chorus is competing in Vegas in the Division A Har-mony Classic. Region 11’s guest faculty was Frenzy, our current 2nd  place International Quartet medalists. Over the weekend, Cachet coached with Judy Pozsgay, Bass of Frenzy and our very own Judy “Ears of a Bat” Ashmore.

Cachet looks forward to several perfor-mances and fundraisers over the next couple of months. On Aug. 6th, we sang on the Chan-nelAire Ice Cream Social in Camarillo. Sept. 11th  is the Cachet Wine, Women and Song Fundraiser in Santa Barbara. Oct. 9th  is the Agoura Hills Harmony Chorus Fundraiser for Cachet. Sept. 17th in Santa Barbara, Cachet will be singing on the Pacific Sound Chorus Show featuring C’est la vie, Ringmasters and Carpe Diem Chorus. Sept. 24th in Long Beach, we will be singing on the Harborlites Show featuring Vocal Spectrum, SwingLine and Carpe Diem Chorus.

We look forward to sharing the Interna-tional Stage with C’est la vie, SpinOff, Swing-Line, Scottsdale, Song Of The Pines,  Har-borlites, Carpe Diem Chorus. Good luck to all Double Quartets! Thank You, Harborlites and Region 21 for your outpouring of amazing support for Cachet!

It’s been quite a whirlwind for SoloVoce, (Marina Hayden – Bs; Jennifer French – Br; Alysse Turner – L; Rebecca Land – T)  from the San Diego Chorus! We got together in Febru-ary of 2016 and decided, “Hey, what the heck let’s compete!” Two never-have-competed before members, and two old hands hit the stage, and we were amazed and excited to come in 9th in our very own Region 21 Re-gional Contest! It was incredible and boy, we had plans! Lots of plans…until our lovely lead Alysse Turner shared the news that her hubby was offered a job on the East Coast and they were moving to South Carolina. Talk about a wrench in the plans! But as the four of us chat-ted, Alysse urged the group to find a new lead, and into our SoloVoce lives, walked Tracey Sandberg – lead extraordinaire!

So, here we are – super excited to re-start our Regional run, singing new songs (and old ones) and learning to sing into a new Lead’s space and really having a great time!  We’ve hit the ground running by singing in a Double Quartet  gig at the end of July, singing for Sum-mer Seminar in San Diego, and we already have one Christmas gig booked! We’re work-ing our contest songs and we have plans! Boy do we have plans! Look out Region 21 – Solo-Voce is here to stay!

In June, Tucson Arizona, was the site of Region 21’s annual Arranger Development Program Retreat/Seminar attracting attendees from Region 11 and as far away as Japan.

This year’s event in-cluded students Debby Fieber, Rob Foltz, Carol Lord, Diane Muscarella, Mario Reynoso, Ash-ley Verbeckmoes, Sonya Yount, and Takako Fuke – this year’s International IMAP Scholarship recip-ient from Japan.

Faculty MMA Nancy Bergman, CMAs Joanie

Adler, Anita Barzilla, Suzy Lobaugh, and Anna Maria Parker presented classes on:  • Eleven Barbershop Chords • What Make Barbershop Music Exciting • Hands on Arranging • Understanding Typical Barbershop Chord Progressions • Manuscript Notation and Finale• Songwriting

Students were encouraged to work one-on-one with the Faculty. Many ‘ah-ha’ mo-ments laced the event while we all learned and helped one another. There is no doubt that sharing our joy for creating the music we love continues to excite and inspire us.

Because Regions 21 and 11 are home to several CMAs and consistently producing positive results from this event, we have agreed to merge our arranging programs. Our new name:  The Southwest Arranging Development Program (Regions 21 and 11). We are excited about this positive approach to enriching each of our programs. Next year’s event will be held in California, alternating each year thereafter.

Are you curious about how barbershop music is created? There couldn’t be a better time to explore arranging. We hope you will consider joining in the fun and camarade-rie of this special group.

In June the choruses in Albuquerque received a mes-sage from the Region 10 YWIH Coordinator needing assistance for  a  very small girls choir on their annual concert tour. This year the Austin Girls Choir  was trav-eling through New Mexico before returning home, and the venue in Albuquerque unexpectedly fell through.  Could we help with housing and feeding this choir on short no-tice? Enchanted Mesa Show Chorus quickly stepped up! Carol Wiggins housed 10 young ladies and chap-erones at her home and in her RV.  Chorus members donated food for breakfast and dinner to supplement the donations Carol received of donuts from Albert-son’s and breakfast burritos from Twisters. The choir presented a outdoor concert in Old Town Albuquer-que for the public. This in turn generated an invitation to sing a song for the wedding ceremony that followed which had not planned music. Enchanted Mesa was happy to partner cross-regionally in providing an en-riching experience for the Austin Girls Choir!

and Route 66 Sound), BHS (Duke City Sound and New MexiChords), and HI (On Q). A total of 50 girls and boys registered, reaching as many

as 22 high schools and home schools from all over the state of New Mexico.

Guest clinicians C’est la vie charmed everyone with their generosity, warmth and humor. They helped set the tone each day and night by

leading vocal warm-ups, teaching line-dancing to “Footloose,” encourag-ing tag-singing, singing with the girls chorus, and joining forces with camp counselors/section leaders to open up the Friday night talent show with a lip synch battle!

The girls and the boys always enjoy the performance aspect of our art form. They are delighted to move and to entertain an audience with more than just their beautiful voices. The camp is a really fun experience, from mak-

ing new friends to finding joy in expressing themselves in music.

The three-day camp ended with a Saturday Night Spectacular in Rodey

Theatre in Albuquerque for family and friends. Area

barbershop choruses and quartets performed, as well as featured guest C’est la vie.  The girls and boys cho-ruses performed separately, and then sang together on “Summer Nights” from Grease. The finale of combined girls/boys/adult choruses was truly inspiring, showing generations becoming one with “Why We Sing!”
