The Young Jumper Championships and Young Jumper FuturityThe Future Begins Here!

The International Jumper Futurity (IJF) was first organized as a not-for-profit in 1988 for the purpose of aiding American breeders of Jumping horses. Renamed the Young Jumper Futurity (YJF) for 2016, the format provides exposure and marketing opportunities for American breeders through a nominating structure for both young horses and breeding stallions, along with Perfor-mance Records and annual Regional Futurity events for four-year-olds nominated to the program. In 1998, the Young Jumper Championships (YJC), was initiated within the same corporate structure to urge competition management to begin to offer specific classes for horses Five, Six and Seven years of age – whether Futurity nominated or not – as long as they provided Breed Registry papers to document their age and identity when they were recorded with the YJC.

Since 1999 the Young Jumper Championship has offered 3 Regional Final events each year in the East, Midwest, and West, for horses that qualified through YJC Qualifiers held at shows throughout the country. These YJC Regionals are held at major Jumping competitions and of-fer substantial prize money – more than $2 million has been awarded to date in the Young Jumper Championships, and $5.75 million in both programs combined – along with recognition to owners and breeders. Since the inception of the YJC, interest in Young Jumpers has grown rapidly and con-sistently throughout the country. Our National Federation, the USEF, now offers year-end awards in these three categories and over 450 YJC Qualifiers are now held at more than 100 shows each year. Meanwhile, the rewards to owners and breeders of a Futurity nomination continue through-out the horse’s time competing in the YJC with special Futurity Bonus Awards recognizing the suc-cesses of nominated horses.

Our website, youngjumpers.com, now records more than 100,000 hits per month. More and more the equestrian community recognizes the value of performance data, and has learned that the YJF/YJC is the only source for complete and accurate information on Young Jumpers regardless of breed.

Our organization takes great pride in its ability to assure only horses legitimately eligible by age compete in the YJF and YJC Regional and Special Events, thus assuring totally fair competition and that our data provides the highest value to breeders and buyers alike.

THREE Programs for Developing Young Jumping Horses in the U.S.A.

Begun in 1998, the Young Jumper Cham-pionship (YJC) Program offers over 450 Qualifying Classes at USEF competitions throughout the country, culminating with three League Finals Championships.

From its inception, the YJC has awarded more than $2 million in prize money in the League Finals alone, and many of the pro-

gram’s alumni have gone on to successful International careers as well as becoming winners at the National level in Amateur, Junior, Young Rider, Hunter Derby, and Grand Prix competition. New for 2016• YJC Qualifying Classes for Five Year Olds at USEF competitions in the first half of the year may be offered at 1.00 to 1.10 M. From July 1st courses may be set between 1.10 and 1.15m. The Regional Finals will see courses at 1.10-1.15m for the 1st Round, 1.15m for the 2nd Round, with a maximum of 1.20m on the 3rd day.• Beginning in 2016, YJC recorded Five Year Olds may earn quali-fying scores in certain non-USEF events held around the country. In an effort to offer show ring experience at a more moderate cost for owners of Five Year Olds, the YJC will keep records of horses’ rounds over courses from 1.00 M to 1.15 M at designated School-ing or Young Horse Shows around the country. Contact the YJC at www.youngjumpers.com for full information on having shows you produce or attend included in this new YJC program.

The Young Jumper Championships - “The Future Begins Here!”

• USEF licensed competitions may offer Four Year Old classes (judged on ‘clear round’ or ‘style’) and list them as YJC affiliated classes. Judges cards, results and class entry lists must be forward-ed to the YJC offices, along with the other YJC Qualifyier results, for inclusion in the Four-Year-Old database. • Non-USEF licensed shows may apply to be affiliated with the YJC at no cost to the show. Jumper classes of 0.85 M up to 1.15 M, whether restricted to Young Horses or not, will count toward performance tabulation for Four and Five Year Old YJC-nomi-nated horses. Organizers should fill out the form to be found at the website www.youngjumpers.com. Dates and contact informa-tion for your events will be listed on the website. Organizers are requested to send complete results, class sheet, and judges’ cards directly to the YJC office.

How do we participate?• Download a Young Jumper Championships Horse Recording Form from the youngjumpers.com website.• Complete the form and mail with a legible copy of the horse’s Breed Registry papers showing the foaling date, pedigree informa-tion, and complete description of the horse, along with payment for the Annual Recording fee.• Compete in designated YJC Qualifying classes to earn an invitation to a Regional Final. You can keep track of your horse’s records on the YJC website to assure all results were properly submitted by YJC Show Organizers.

The Young Jumper 4-Year-Old Futurity - “Made in the USA”!

Founded in 1988 as the International Jumper Futurity, this program is making some changes starting in 2016 to optimize opportunities for young jumping horses foaled in North America. As THE pro-

gram for breeders the Futurity will offer the following:• Opportunities to nominate horses at a very young age at low cost, with higher nominating fees assessed at ages three and four.• Three $10,000 4-Year-Old Futurity Regionals open only to Futu-rity Nominated Four Year Olds. These events showcase American breeding as horses are evaluated over two days on jumping tech-nique and potential by internationally recognized judges.• Ability to create a verifiable record of a youngster’s show ring experience (at both licensed and unlicensed shows) throughout their four year old season, with breeding information in the same location.• A listing of both USEF and non-USEF events in your area offer-

ing excellent opportunities to introduce a youngster to the show ring setting.• Recognition of the breeders of horses as they progress through the ranks from four to seven year olds and beyond.• Special financial rewards and recognition of those horses who are born in America and “Made in the USA!” via YJF Regionals and YJC Bonus Awards available only to Nominated horses.• Recognition of the progeny of YJC Nominated Stallions with ad-vertising opportunities and financial incentives, including large-breeder discounts on YH nominations and discounted advertising rates in the Young Jumper Annual Year Book.• Ability to nominate horses prior to their three year old year with only proof of age (no stallion nomination required), thus estab-lishing age and identity for individuals that might not be included in a Breed Registry.• Discounted annual YJC recording fees for Futurity nominated horses.

How do we participate?Owners of Four-Year-Old Horses not nominated to the Futu-rity:• Download a YJF Nomination Form from the youngjumpers.com website• Complete the form and mail with a legible copy of the horse’s Breed Registry papers showing the foaling date, pedigree informa-tion, and complete description of the horse, along with payment, to the address provided.• Look for listed events offering classes for Four Year Old Jumpers, or non-USEF shows designated as YJF/YJC affiliated. If events are not offered, or suitable Schooling Shows in your area are not yet affiliated urge the organizers to get involved. It’s easy and the rewards to you as a horse owner and to the event are measurable! You might want to print out the information from the website or give them a copy of this pamphlet to let them know what’s pos-sible.• Any rounds which your horse completes with four faults or less, held at 0.85 M through 1.00 M will be listed on your horse’s record on the website.• Enter your horse for the YJF 4-Year-Old Regional closest to you, and get ready for continued recognition of your horse’s achieve-ments throughout his career.• Should you have a Four-Year-Old that does not have Breed Reg-istry papers it is not eligible for the Futurity program with its on-going benefits, but should you wish to have a performance record of its achievements published on our website, you may record the horse to the YJC program for that year. These horses are NOT eligible for a YJF Regional.

Breeders and Owners of Horses Three Years of Age and under:• Nominate your horses at the one-time Nomination Fee as shown for the age they became on January 1st. The earlier you nominate the less expense is involved. Be sure that anyone purchasing a nominated horse is aware of the benefits involved, and rest as-sured that you as the Breeder or Original Nominator will continue to be recognized throughout the horse’s career.• Note that horses without Breed Registry papers may only be nominated to the Futurity program prior to the start of their Three Year Old year. In this case a letter from your attending vet-

erinarian verifying foaling date is all that is required, along with full identification including markings.• Breeders or Owners of three or more horses are eligible for dis-counts on Nomination fees. See the website for full information.

Owners of Breeding Stallions:• While nomination of the sire will no longer be mandatory for the YJF, there are many benefits to those standing Sport Horse Stallions.• Leading U.S. stallions for the year will be recognized throughout the year and at year end.• Nominated stallions will be featured in the Annual Year Book with discounted advertising rates.• Owners of nominated stallions will be offered free or discounted Young Horse nominations for the offspring of their foals.

Show Organizers:• USEF licensed competitions may continue to offer one YJC classes for each age group: Five, Six, and Seven (ages may be combined depending on entries) just as in all prior years.• In addition, licensed competitions may offer Four Year Old classes (judged on ‘clear round’ or ‘style’) and list them as YJF-affiliated classes. Horse names, fence height (0.85-1.00 M), and fault scores must be forwarded to the YJC offices, along with the other YJC class results, for inclusion in the Four-Year-Old data-base. • Non-USEF licensed shows may apply to be affiliated with the YJC/YJF at no cost to the show. Their jumper classes of 0.85 M up to 1.15 M, whether restricted to Young Horses or not, will count toward performance tabulation for Four and Five Year Old YJF and YJC horses. Organizers should fill out the form to be found at the website www.youngjumpers.com. Dates and contact infor-mation for your events will be listed on the website. Organizers are requested to send horse’s names, fence height, and fault score for horses with scores of four faults or better to the YJC, however the horse owner may obtain the judge’s card for the rounds they wish counted (along with a note from the secretary indicating the name of the horse showing under the number shown on the card and certifying the result) and send it directly to the YJC office.

The Young Horse Trainers’ School - YHTS

• Six days of hands-on work with young Sport Horses, including conformation analysis, ground work with foals on up, starting youngsters under saddle, introducing work over fences, preparing for the show ring, and much more.• Intended for professionals and amateurs with an interest in expanding their knowledge and experience with this important segment of the horse industry.• Entering its fourth year, participants are hands on with the horses as well as involved with group discussions on topics per-taining to developing confident, sound animals prepared to go on with long and successful careers.• Invaluable networking opportunities along with certificates of completion and advanced certificates for returnees, and co-pre-

senter opportunities for individuals with extensive experience in this area.• Held annually at Maplewood Stables, Reno, NV in the fall. 2016 dates: September 7th through 11th. Attendance limited and filling fast. Contact Julie Winkel,(775) 849-1849, for moreinformation.

Box 1445, Georgetown, KY 40324.

Horses that were not properly recorded prior to participa-tion in any YJC class may not receive credit toward qualifi-cation for League Finals. Please note it is the responsibility of the owner or trainer, and not the show or the YJC, to as-sure that horses are properly recorded. A listing of currently YJC Recorded horses will be updated regularly on the web site at http://www.youngjumpers.com. Please assure that your horse(s) is listed as recorded and promptly report any discrepancies.

Young Jumper Championship Rules ~ 2016 YJC Qualifying Classes

YJC Calendar. Show management should request a packet of additional YJC materials including complete YJC pro-gram rules, the most recent list of YJC recorded horses, Recording Application Forms, etc.

By hosting a YJC Qualifier, a show agrees to run its YJC Qualifiers in accordance with all of the following condi-tions:

a. A USEF licensed course designer must be respon-sible for the courses for all YJC Qualifiers. All course requirements as outlined in the Course Design Require-ments below MUST be adhered to.

b. Each horse’s breed, sire, dam, and breeder must be announced during the class.

c. Only ONE YJC Qualifier may be offered per show. If a section for young jumpers is offered, the final class of the section must be clearly stated in the prize list to be the YJC Qualifier and will be the only class counted toward qualification for Regional Finals.

d. YJC Qualifying Classes for age groups may be com-bined and run as one class when there are less than 4 in a given age category. When classes are combined, each age category must jump the height specified for that catego-ry. When jumps are raised for the older age group they must also be spread appropriately. Course requirements and scoring specifications must conform to those speci-fied for the youngest age group jumping in the combined class. Results must indicate the age category in which each entry competed. Note: A YJC Qualifier with fewer than 3 entries MAY be run, and exhibitors WILL receive credit for their fault score in the round, but no points will be awarded for placement.

5. Shows failing to follow YJC program rules, including requiring proof of eligibility for all entrants, may be denied permission to hold YJC Qualifying Classes in the future.

6. USEF Schooling and Equipment Rules must be en-forced. (See above for special rules pertaining to Young Jumpers).

7. QUALIFICATION FOR 2016 LEAGUE FINALS: Horses must compete and earn a score in a minimum of 3 YJC Qualifiers. The first round fault scores from the BEST THREE Qualifying rounds will count toward the YJC rank-ings. In the case of there being more Five Year Olds with 3 clear jumping rounds entered for any Special/Invitational YJC competition restricting the number of entries, addi-tional rounds will be considered. For Six-Year-Olds and up, additional points will be assigned based on the number of entries in the Qualifying class, per USEF Rule GR1131 (see chart below). Horses that do not earn a ribbon will earn 1 point for each clear round in the Qualifying class. In the case of horses tied with equal faults for acceptance into any Special/Invitational YJC competition, ties will be broken by scores earned in the 4th & 5th qualifiers.

Beginning in 2016, YJC recorded Five Year Olds may earn qualifying scores in certain non-USEF events held around the country. In an effort to offer show ring experi-ence at a more moderate cost for owners of Five Year Olds, the YJC will keep records of horses’ rounds over courses from 1.00 M to 1.15 M at designated Schooling or Young Horse Shows around the country.

COURSE DESIGN REQUIREMENTS for 2016 YJC QUALIFYING CLASSES Five Year Olds Six Year Olds Seven Year Olds

CoursesSee additional restric-tions for young horses in USEF Rule Book JP116.

Flowing and smooth tracks—encouraging very young, green horses to jump clear. Distances set on comfortable striding. No technicality or awkward approaches to jumps. Use walls and ‘spooky’ material very carefully, especially in first half of the year. First fence and entrance to any combination set 5 cm lower than height of class. All courses should begin in a simple and inviting man-ner for green horses; combina-tions, very square oxers, and other ‘questions’ should be in the second half of the course, never before fence #5.

Smooth tracks, not technical (especially early in the season). Avoid complicated or technical approaches to any combina-tions or related lines. Use care not to overly complicate any portion of the course with multiple questions (i.e. height, width, distance, material, ap-proach, etc.) Avoid combina-tions, liverpools, etc. before fence #4 or 5, especially in the first half of the year.

Increase the horses’ experi-ence over a variety of courses. Keep in mind that these are not yet experienced GP or Amateur horses but are getting experience to meet greater challenges in the future.

Young Jumper Championships - Rules for 2016 YJC Regional FinalsThree Regional Finals will be offered for Five, Six, and Seven/Eight Year Old horses in 2016. No horse may compete in more than one Regional Final. To be eligible to participate in any aspect of the YJC program, horses must meet the following criteria:

1. RECORDING: Horses must be correctly recorded for the year 2016 with the Young Jumper Championships prior to competing in Qualifying classes. Horses that were not properly recorded prior to participation in any YJC Qualifying class may not receive credit toward qualification for League Finals.

2. QUALIFICATION TO PARTICIPATE IN A REGIONAL FINAL: The Regional Finals are open to all horses that have competed and earned a fault score in a minimum of 3 YJC Qualifiers. Rankings will be tabulated throughout the season, however only Special or Invitational YJC events will limit entry through the use of the rankings. The first round faults from the BEST THREE Qualifying rounds will count toward the YJC rankings. Ties in the rankings will be broken by points earned by placings in the classes for Six and Seven Year Olds. Horses that have recorded 3 rounds of 4 faults or better at 1.0m or higher at non-licensed shows are also eligible to compete at Regional Finals.

3. ENTERING A YJC REGIONAL FINAL: Horses must be correctly entered for a YJC Regional Final both on the entry blank for the show and on the YJC website. The entry submitted on the website must be received no later than Saturday of the week prior to the event. Any horse not properly entered for any Regional Final may be denied participation. If an entry is accepted for a non-recorded but fully qualified horse, the recording fee at the event will be $1,000.

4. CHECK IN and IDENTIFICATION: A representative of the YJC will be present at each event to answer any questions and assure

CoursesSee additional restric-tions for young horses in USEF Rule Book JP116.

Height

Speed

Combinations,Liverpoolsand Water

Flowing and smooth tracks—encouraging very young horses to jump clear. No difficult distances in combinations or related lines. No technical-ity or awkward approaches to jumps. Use walls and very ‘spooky’ material very carefully First fence and entrance to any combination may be 5 cm lower than height of the round. Keep combinations, very square ox-ers, and other ‘questions’ until later in the course.

Rd. One: max. 1.10m (verticals 1.15m.] Rd. Two: max.1.15m (verticals 1.20m.] Round Three: 1.15-1.20m (verticals 1.25m)

350 m/m

Use material horses are familiar and comfortable with in combi-nations. Use only comfortable, flowing distances –nothing short or ‘trappy.’ Avoid combi-nations in the first third of the course. Liverpools must be used in an inviting manner - never in combinations. When using a vertical over any liverpool, the rails must be in the center. Square oxers should be avoided over a Liverpool. Any water jump must have an option provided.

Smooth tracks, not particularly technical. Avoid complicated or technical approaches to any combinations. Use care not to overly complicate any portion of the course with multiple questions (i.e. height, width, distance, material, approach, etc.) Avoid combinations, liverpools, etc. before fence #4 or 5

Rd. One: 1.20m - max.1.25m. Rd. Two: 1.25m - max. 1.30m. Rd. Three: 1.30 to max. 1.35m. Jump-off may be 5cm higher.

350 m/m

Use only comfortable, flow-ing distances in combinations. Avoid using any short or ‘trappy’ distances.Liverpools encouraged, but not permitted in combinations.A water jump, with a rail, in the latter half of course, not more than 11’ (3.30m), is strongly encouraged, especially in Rd. 2 and/or Rd.3. If the wa-ter is larger than 3m. an option should be considered.

Keep in mind that these are not yet experienced GP or Amateur horses but are still at least one step away.ALWAYS CAREFULLY ADD DIFFICULTY AS WELL AS HEIGHT AS THE COMPE-TITION PROGRESSES.

Rd. One: 1.25-1.30m, Rd. Two: 1.30-1.35, Rd.Three: max. 1.35m.Jump-off may be 5cm higher.

350 m/m

Avoid difficult triples where horses can get bad experi-ences. Liverpools, if used, are permitted as the first element only. Liverpools, if used in combinations, permitted as first element only.A water jump of 3.30m (without a rail) is strongly encouraged in Rd. 2 and/or Rd. 3. No water may exceed 12’ (3.60m)

28th Annual Young Jumper 4-Year-Old Futurity formerly the International Jumper Futurity

Format for 2016 YJF 4-Year-Old Regionals

Classes are open only to 4-year-old horses, foaled in North America, that have been nominated to the Young Jumper Futurity (formerly the International Jumper Futurity).

COURSES: All courses for YJF competitions will be made as inviting as possible for green horses with limited or no experience in a show ring situation. Very simple tracks will be used utilizing hunter-type tracks, with jumper-type fences. The course will be designed to aid the horses in showing their natural talent in the very early stages of their training. Judges will be considering the potential of these young horses for a future in the jumper/grand prix rings. A rail down or refusal will not automatically eliminate a horse from placing well in the competition if, in the judges’ opinions, the fault occurred due to rider error or a “green” mistake.

ROUND 1: Each horse will perform an individual short flat phase with trot and canter work in both directions, demonstrating lengthening and shortening of stride. The horse will remain in the ring and, upon the sounding of the tone, will jump a course of fences with simple distances. A trot fence may be included in this round. Fences in Round 1 will be 0.90-0.95 M in height with spreads up to 1.05 M, giving the judges and course designers the opportunity to evaluate the quality and experience of the horses at that particular event. Horses may be shown in running or standing martingales, but draw reins are not allowed.

ROUND 2: All horses will return (the following day) to be shown over a course of fences up to 1.00 M in height and 1.10 M in width. Simple double combinations may be included. At the Course Designers and Judges discre-tion options may be included at a maximum of two of the fences. These options may not exceed 1.15 M in height and will allow riders to show their horses to their own best advantage. Judges will not reward or penalize solely on the basis of which option is chosen. Horses may be shown in running or standing martingales, but draw reins are not allowed.
