Festival WelcomeWelcome to Orangeville where we have a super heavy duty weekend of music, food, and fun lined up for you. We are excited to share music from our diverse, high calibre line-up of local , national and international artists. Last year we set an attendance record and recently we were named in the Top 100 Festivals & Events in Ontario for the fifth time. Join us for our Opening Night Gala at Best Western PLUS Inn & Suites for a very cool party. Check out free concerts in Alexandra Park and inside the Orangeville Opera House. The Blues Cruise is back on Friday night with 10 bands and 300 Classic cars on the street. For the first time in our festival’s history the main street Broadway, will be closed to vehicles on Saturday. In fact, Broadway recently won the Best Street in Canada award! Downtown will be overflowing with activity including a new feature, Pop- Up Bands on Broadway featuring local talent. Our Blues & Bikes event promises to be bigger than ever. Don’t miss the great talented acts from our area featured in the TD Local Stars Tent. Our workshop series takes place in the Orangeville Library on Saturday. There are over twenty five participating clubs and pubs featuring live music all weekend as official venues of the festival. After a huge success last year with over 2500 people participating, the Memorial Jazz March returns led by our own Jazz Society Little Big Band. This is a New Orleans style march to honour volunteers of the festival who have passed on. We invite you to march with us in honour of any of your loved ones.

We are very proud that this is a free admission festival! Our success stems from the great community support and our fantastic team of 160 volunteers and board members. Please help it remain this way by making a donation when you see our volunteers coming around with buckets. We would like to thank all of our generous sponsoring businesses and individuals, the Orangeville BIA, The Town Of Orangeville, The Government of Ontario and The Government of Canada.

I hope you enjoy some awesome music and discover a great “new to you” artist at our festival. Like Duke Ellington said, “There are only two types of music - good music and the other kind!”

Cheers

Opening Night GalaSPONSORED BY MERIDIAN

THURSDAY @ 7:00 PMAURAAura’s incredible voice has been stunning audiences and critics alike for over four decades. As Nat Hentoff said in his book The Grove International Encyclopedia of Jazz, “She is a phenomonel singer!” As well as building a formidable discography, Aura has performed extensively around the world with jazz giants – she toured the US and Japan with Quincy Jones, covered the US and Europe with Duke Ellington, toured Scandinavia with Thad Jones and Mel Lewis (which culminated in their recording an album together with the Swedish Radio Orchestra). Her appearances include such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall, Newport Jazz Festival and Village Vanguard. She’s been declared a national treasure in her native Romania (where she is known by her maiden name Aura Urziceanu) She continues to tour internationally as well as give master classes throughout Europe, her voice as well as her passion having grown richer with time.

THURSDAY @ 8:10 PMBIG RUDE JAKE Based in Toronto, Jake started his career in the mid 1990s by forming a band that combined his interest in traditional jazz, jump blues, and 70’s punk. The lyrical style was inspired by his love for powerhouse songwriters like Tom Waits, Jacques Brel and Berthold Brecht. These ideas continue to take him and his music around the world. A history buff as well as a music lover. Jake was drawn to the Jazz tradition for its passion and sensuality. He lamented the rise of the stuffy ‘jazz intellectual’ and dreamed up a plan to bring jazz back to its streetwise, rough hewn roots. His stage persona evoked strident passion and longing as he performed his jazz and blues influenced compositions in venues across Canada finding kindred spirits who appreciated his dream of a “Bawdy House Jazz” revival.

THURSDAY @ 9:30 PMJEROME GODBOOBAND FEATURING SHAWN KELLERMAN Toronto singer and harmonica player Jerome Godboo is always improving himself, as a musician, a man and a communicator. An accomplished and exceptional bluesman, his bending harp skills have been sought by everyone from Ronnie Hawkins to the late Jeff Healey and he continues to mesmerize all who witness him onstage including the judges at the International blues Challenge 2014 held in Memphis where Jerome took home the Lee Oskar best harmonica Player award. The one-time local legend of explosive 90s rock band the Phantoms, Jerome has released 14 albums in his 25-plus year career.

BIG JOHNNY BLUEBig Johnny Blue composes and plays “movin’ music” for anyone who’s ready to listen. He’s tangible evidence of a creative, musical mind that has been molded by a community conscience and a heavy dose of real life.

CHUCKEE ZEHR & THE CRAWDADDYS Chuckee and the Crawdaddies have been delighting audiences at blues venues and festivals throughout Ontario since forming in 2006. GARY KENDALL BANDEveryone knows Gary Kendall as oft-elected Maple Blues’ Bassist of the Year, blues man about town and keeper of the bottom end for Downchild. But Gary’s alter ego is found in his much beloved Gary Kendall Band – a band in which each carefully selected player is equal and accountable. Formed in 2005, Gary reached out to some of Toronto’s best musicians to create a turn-on-a-dime squad of blues marauders to build a loyal following for their own brand of music –and for doing exactly what they like to on any given night – play the blues.

JAMES ANTHONY BANDA natural musician at age 10, James Anthony played Ontario Place at 15 and turned pro at 17. As a Frontman and member of LuLu’s house band “Kats” James worked with over 150 Rock & Roll Legends including, Sam & Dave Gary US Bonds, Frankie Ford, Paul Revere and the Raiders (Mark Lyndsy) The New Mamas and the Papas with(Denny Doherty) ShaNaNa, Gerry and the Pacemakers Ohio Players, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Jr Walker, Rare Earth, Johnny Preston Ben E King Chubby Checker Bobby Cortolla Peter Noone (Herman’s Hermits), The Drifters, The Coasters, and The Platters. LISA HUTCHINSON BANDLisa owns the stage as a fiery, soulful blues singer whose live performance emits energy akin to that of Janis Joplin. As an artist who expresses the full range and texture of her instrument, Lisa’s voice defies simple description as she reaches deep into the well of her soul. Lisa and her band bring their own brand of Canadian soul to the blues. With Ian Ross on guitar, Steven Henry on drums, and Peter Loudon on bass, the band shows a deep respect for the blues tradition while infusing their music with raw energy and authentic passion. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness Lisa and her band stir up a crowd!

and mentoring for youth and culturally enriching performances for seniors and the greater community. The Band includes people from a variety of skills levels and is intended to provide enjoyment of Community. The group usually showcases approximately sixty performers, and performs many genres of Music.

TURBO STREET FUNKTurbo Street Funk defy convention; whether they’re playing a festival, pub, concert hall, or even on a busy street corner, their infectious songs always sound at home. With a style rooted in the New Orleans horn tradition, Turbo Street Funk combine Top 40 hits with top notch originals in a show that gets people moving. Formed in 2011, Turbo Street Funk began as a professional busking band, performing four days a week on the streets of Toronto. The band drew the attention of “Shuffle Demons” Richard Underhill & George Koller and, with George at the helm, Turbo Street Funk released their debut album, “To The Street,” in May 2014. Since its release, Turbo Street Funk has grown from a street savvy busking crew into a collection of dynamic showmen, performing at festivals and events across Ontario. The band’s second studio album will be released Summer 2016.

LOCOMONOHailing from the high, lonesome Hills of Headwaters, LocoMono is a collective of song writers, singers and multi-instru-mentalists who indulge their interest in rock, blues, country, sixties pop, surf music, spaghetti westerns and dancing. LocoMono fans say the band delivers with great repertoire, steely performance and the joy of singing a good song.

VOODOO PAWNSHOPPaul Murray is on drums & back up vocals. Dan fronts VOODOO Pawn Shop with his distinctive voice, delivering blues with an edge. Earle Leard has been playing bass for over 27 years from Ottawa to Toronto. Ron Winn grew up listening to the likes of Muddy Waters and Little Walter. He was amazed at the sound of Little Walter’s harmonica and developed an affinity for that style. Wayne Ricard picked up the guitar at age 17 and was soon introduced to The Blues. Bending strings to SRV, Hendrix, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Clapton are just a few of his inspirations.

FRIDAY @ 9:30 PMBLACKBURN An obvious uniqueness that identifies and sets apart the band is that Blackburn is a band of brothers – literally. Duane (lead vocals), Brooke (guitar), Cory (drums) and Robert (who took part on harmony vocals and songwriting on the newest release) all share the Blackburn name; a name that has become truly connected to Toronto music history. Musically, the Blackburn name has been forever imprinted in our ears by Bobby Dean Blackburn, an R&B artist who gained legendary status in the Toronto music scene, performing the city circuit for over 30 years. Beyond the music, other history runs deep too. The Blackburn name is tied to the history of the Underground Railroad, and there is a direct connection to the musical talents that we know and listen to today.

SATURDAY @ 2:00 PMMICHAEL SCHATTE“Michael Schatte... is a dream of a guitar player, a dashing performer, but also a thoughtful and self-conscious artist.” The Canadian guitarist, vocalist and songwriter has found himself a top-eight finalist at the 2015 Memphis International Blues Challenge, and the winner of the 2015 Toronto Blues Society Talent Search. A respected and fiery guitarist, Schatte has developed the habit of leaving audience jaws agape. He’s been compared to world-class players decades his senior, and counts Peter Green, Danny Gatton, Albert Lee, Mark Knopfler and of course the aforementioned Richard Thompson as major influences on both his electric and acoustic fingerstyle playing. Reviewing a recent concert at Aeolian Hall in London, ON, The Beat Magazine described Michael as “one of Canada’s best-kept secrets and certainly one of its most skilled rock performers,” citing his “masterful manipulation of the guitar” and a vocal style “as polished as his picking.”

SATURDAY @ 3:30 PMDIONE TAYLOR &THE BLACKSLIDERZ The expansive prairie sky covers a great deal of North American real estate. And of all the emotions contained therein, it’s the prairie blues, a feeling that sings louder than all others on Dione Taylor’s new EP, Born Free. Music has always been an integral part of Dione Taylor’s life. A pastor’s daughter from Saskatchewan, she was born & raised in a family she describes as “really connected to the gift of song. My whole family sings & plays instruments in church,” praises Ms. Taylor, who by age ten, was music director & organist at The Shiloh Assembly Church in Regina. Dione Taylor was nominated for a Gemini Award for her rendition of Oscar Peterson’s “Hymn to Freedom,” which she performed alongside Oliver Jones at the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala. She is also the recipient of the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award Mentorship Program.

SATURDAY @ 6:00 PMTAYLOR/KURTZ ERUPTION Rick Taylor made his first major appearance as a singer, songwriter and guitarist at the famed Mariposa Folk Festival in 1971 and went on to become a regular at many Canadian festivals and clubs.Rick Taylor is well know for his high energy live performances, rich, expressive baritone voice, and his quirky and novel song writing styles such as the cult classics “Black Leather Diaper” and “Drunkards Lullaby”, as well as his delicately, haunting, well crafted ballads, and unforgettable “guitarnastics”. Larry Kurtz is the Founder & Artistic Director of the Orangeville Blues & Jazz Festival. He has been Orangeville’s Blues & Jazz guy for over 20 years with his award winning band Trouble & Strife. A singer, songwriter and harmonica player, Larry has opened for and played with some of the greats such as James Cotton, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Downchild, Jeff Healy’s Blues Band and many more!

SATURDAY @ 7:40 PMANDRIA SIMONESinger-songwriter Andria Simone was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. Her style can be described as “soul-flavoured”, but she is a lover of many genres. Her eclectic taste in music can be partly attributed to the various places she has lived, including Manchester, England and Lviv, Ukraine. More a force of nature than an instrument, hers is a voice that can send shivers up your spine while tugging at your heart. Role models are such powerhouse singers as Janis Joplin, Tina Turner, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, Etta James and Amy Winehouse. She is not a conventional 12-bar blues singer, but she can certainly excel in that format. That was vividly demonstrated at the famed Women’s Blues Revue at Massey Hall. Sharing the spotlight alongside Shakura S’Aida, Divine Brown and Lori Yates, she dazzled with killer versions of tunes by Etta, Janis and Little Walter, earning a standing ovation.

SATURDAY @ 9:30 PMHARPER & MIDWEST KIND An amalgamation of blues, soul and world music, Australian singer/ songwriter “Peter D. Harper” creates a heady mix of roots music through his creative use of the harmonica, and the haunting drone of the didgeridoo. By combining traditional and modern influences, Harper has created a highly original take on “World Blues”. Harper has received an amazing 14 x music awards in the USA, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. He recently won a 2014 Detroit Music Award for “Outstanding Vocalist” and has been nominated for 2 x 2015 Detroit Music Awards. No Depression Magazine,’s (USA) Rod Ames, adds that Harper “ has written and arranged some of the most soulful blues rock filled music I have ever heard..”. Chip Eagle, (Blues Revue, USA) said “..Harper is the most exciting artist on the live scene today”. Harper is backed by his very talented Detroit based band “Midwest Kind”.

SATURDAY @ 12:00 PMODSS JAZZ BAND

This local ensemble of (student) musicians from Orangeville District Secondary High School. This band loves to showcase their efforts for local events. There are also a handful of adult members who volunteer their time and talent to support this youthful group. The ensemble has been a staple in the Orangeville community for almost 20 years thanks to the endless

support from key community members. Many musicians have had their start in this ensemble and have gone on to play with many other bands. This group plays contemporary hits dressed in a jazz arrangement, Motown favourites, as well as the standards. Their performance is always filled with recognizable tunes mixed with an energetic atmosphere.

SATURDAY @ 1:15 PMSTAN CHANG/ERICK BRUCK

Both accomplished musicians in their own right, Stan and Erick made their debut playing together opening The Opera House for the Orangeville Blues and Jazz Festival in June, 2015 and have continued to play together since. Current gigs have them traveling all over Southern Ontario from as far west as Kitchener Waterloo and Guelph to the east end of the Greater Toronto Area.

Their combination of piano and drums matched with Stan’s vocals compliment each other well for both large and small venues. With the ability to play Blues, Jazz and Contemporary Pop as well as Original Songs, their versatility allows them to play at all events and occasions ranging from corporate functions and weddings to music clubs, bars and private parties.

SATURDAY @ 2:30 PMJAZZ SOCIETY BAND

The Orangeville Jazz Society is proof that large community music events like the Orangeville Blues and Jazz Festival promote and foster the development of music at the local level. The Society was formed 5 years ago, after local jazz musicians found themselves often on stage at the OBJF with like minded individuals. The idea that there

should be a forum within which they can develop and nurture their skills was born. Under the direction of local jazz virtuoso Ryan Grist, the group’s songbook includes jazz standards, vocal stylings and original material from in-house arranger Cam Millar.

SATURDAY @ 4:00 PMJUSTIN MCDONALD

After a decade spent haunting the stages and drinking holes of Dufferin County, Justin McDonald has descended from the hills with a classic album of distinctly northern stories and sounds shot through with the authentic voice of rural Canada. His new record ‘Dufferin County Museum’ is the result of a series of late-night summits in the Orangeville living room

/ recording studio of producer Stewart Gunn and features diverse contributions from a rogues gallery of local artists all unmistakably drinking from the same well. The result is the real and unforced sound of country song writing at its truest, drawing from lonesome bar-top reflections and a lifetime spent performing.

Page 39: 2016 Orangeville Blues and Jazz Festival Guide

Listen together.Share together.Celebrate together.Come together.

For the love of music. We all know live shows are fun. We’re there hanging out with passionate crowds, singing along with the headliner, cheering at the top of our lungs, and making memories that last a lifetime. Being the fans that we are, TD proudly celebrates Canadian music festivals. See you at the next show.
