Looking the Part of a Mets Starter, Robert Gsellman Performs

By JAMES WAGNERSEPT. 3, 2016

To pitch in the Mets’ rotation these days, it seems, being at least 6 feet 4 inches and having hair down to the shoulders is a necessity. Jacob deGrom is 6-4 with flowing locks, and Noah Syndergaard is two inches taller and also has long hair. So in that sense, Robert Gsellman, also 6-4, fit right in before he threw his first pitch in the major leagues.

“I like this for now,” Gsellman said, pointing to the long hair tied behind his head, as he keeps it when he is not on the mound. “Until it gets annoying.”

While Gsellman’s physical attributes make him a good fit for the Mets’ rotation, his pitching earned him the spot in a time of need. Making his second major league start Saturday, Gsellman, 23, tossed six impressive innings in a 3-1 victory over the Washington Nationals at Citi Field.

Curtis Granderson delivered a two-run single in the third inning after the Nationals intentionally walked Yoenis Cespedes to face him. James Loney contributed a run-scoring double in the sixth. The bullpen tossed three scoreless innings. But it was Gsellman, an unheralded prospect, who did the heavy lifting.

“You can almost tell when he goes out there, he’s got that confidence about him,” Loney said. “Nothing fazes him.”

Gsellman’s rise to the majors was sparked by a solid 2016 minor league season. He began this season at Class AA Binghamton and advanced to Class AAA Las Vegas after posting a 2.71 E.R.A. He had a 5.73 E.R.A. at Las Vegas, a difficult pitching environment, before his call-up.

Injuries have come to define this Mets season, and the starting rotation has been hit hard. Matt Harvey is done for the season. Zack Wheeler will not pitch at all. Steven Matz is rehabbing from shoulder tightness. Rafael Montero is likely to start on Tuesday because deGrom has forearm soreness.

But the Mets have surged to a game behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the second wild-card spot in the National League race partly because the rotation fill-ins Gsellman and Seth Lugo have done well.

“We’ve asked a lot of some young players, and they’ve stepped up,” Mets Manager Terry Collins said.

The Mets plucked Gsellman in the 13th round of the 2011 draft out of Westchester High in Los Angeles. He was a two-sport star, playing baseball and basketball, which he still considers his favorite sport. He was Westchester’s shooting guard when it won a state title his junior year. He was 6-4 even then, but leaner.

Gsellman began focusing on baseball because he was better on the diamond as a pitcher and slugger. Although he said his fastball in high school was a pedestrian 85 to 88 miles per hour, the Mets liked his potential and athleticism.

“I thought this might be a better path,” he said. “I also wasn’t tall enough for basketball. I’m a little small.”

Two years into his professional baseball career, Gsellman picked up a two-seam fastball, the sinking pitch that has helped vault him to the majors, courtesy of his off-season pitching coach, Keith Ramsey, a former minor league pitcher. Gsellman added a slider to his repertoire last season.

The Mets called up Gsellman on Aug. 23 to pitch out of the bullpen when Matz went on the disabled list. But when Jon Niese’s knee gave out after four batters that day, Gsellman tossed three and two-thirds innings in a 7-4 win over the Cardinals.

“It really doesn’t surprise me when I see him have success up here,” said Mets outfielder Michael Conforto, who came up through the minors with Gsellman. “I’m thrilled for him.”

Five days after his debut, Gsellman made his first major league start. On Saturday, he flashed his poise again, allowing nine base runners but only one run. After escaping a two-on, no-out jam in the sixth, he smacked his glove in delight as he walked off the field.

“I’m definitely proud of myself,” Gsellman said of his success. “I’ve come a long way to get here. My work is not done yet. I just have to keep going out there and have fun.”

The Mets traded away many pitching prospects last season to build their World Series team, but pitching depth was such a strength that some options remained in the minors. Lugo was rated the 22nd-best prospect in the Mets’ minor leagues by MLB.com before his call-up, and Gsellman was 14th.

“I’m not surprised, I’m proud,” Lugo said of Gsellman. “Playing with G the last few years, that dude can pitch. We kind of catch ourselves competing against each other. I know he’s got good stuff.”

Collins added, “We’re very, very lucky that he wasn’t one of those guys we had to move last year.”

As Gsellman pitched on Saturday, his long black hair flapped around under his hat. Lugo, who is also 6-4 but with short hair, disdains Gsellman’s long locks. “I’ve been trying to talk G into cutting that for a couple years now,” he said.

Gsellman grew out his hair as part of a bet with his close friend John Gant, one of the pitching prospects used by the Mets last season to acquire Kelly Johnson and Juan Uribe in a trade.

The two vowed in 2014 to grow their hair out, and the first to cut it would buy the other a pair of cleats.

When Gant was traded in July 2015 to the Atlanta Braves, he had to cut his hair per team policy. Gsellman, who kept his long hair, said he had better locks anyway.

“He’d probably think otherwise,” Gsellman said.

Michael Conforto becomes center of attention with diving catch against Nationals

KRISTIE ACKERT

Sunday, September 4, 2016, 1:58 AM

Michael Conforto has played six major league games at center field, but Saturday night he made a crucial play that may have silenced his critics. With a runner on first in the seventh inning, Conforto made a diving catch of Daniel Murphy’s shallow fly ball to not only get the first out, but save the Mets a run.

“That’s a tough situation right there. If that ball gets past me, (Jayson) Werth probably scores from first,” Conforto said. “With the jump I had, the way the ball was carrying, Murph hit the ball really hard, I felt like I had an opportunity to go down and get it. And if not, hopefully go down and get it on the short hop.

“It definitely felt good to get that one and keep Murph off the bases and especially from keeping it from going past me.”

Conforto played left field last year but the Mets have been forced to play Yoenis Cespedes in left instead of center field due to his injured quad. Conforto, who played six games at center in Triple-A this season and is starting to show that he has the instincts and athletic ability to play the position. Terry Collins said he is not surprised Conforto made that run-saving play.

“When we worked him out there one of the things we talked about was that you see the strike zone better, you see where the ball’s at, so you kind of have a better idea of where the ball might get hit, but his reactions out there, I think even his routes to the ball are pretty good,” the Mets manager said. “For a guy that hasn’t played in center field, that’s taking a huge chance. That ball bounces by him and it’s an easy triple if not an inside the park home run, so, it’s credit to his makeup and the fact that he’s not afraid to make a play.”

SUNDAY BREAK

The Mets are catching a break Sunday. They will avoid Nationals ace Max Scherzer, who was originally scheduled to pitch the nationally televised series finale. National manager Dusty Baker told the reporter he wanted to give Scherzer an additional day off at this time of year.

“If I can give a guy an extra day, then we’ll give him an extra day,” Baker said. “You’d love for Max to pitch against the Mets, but we felt the extra day is more important than Max pitching here.”

Last year, Scherzer (15-7, 2.89) pitched a no-hitter against the Mets at Citi Field on the final weekend. Instead, the Nationals called up rookie right-hander Reynaldo Lopez from Triple-A Syracuse to make the start. Even with the loss to the Mets Saturday night, the Nationals hold a 9.5 game lead over them in the National League East.

TUESDAY TBA

Rafael Montero is expected to be called up to make the start Tuesday at Cincinnati in place of Jacob deGrom. The right-hander allowed three runs on two hits in 1.1 innings in a start for Double-A Binghamton Saturday night.

Terry Collins rewarded for gambling on Curtis Granderson

JOHN HARPER

Sunday, September 4, 2016, 1:26 AM

In the end, the win belonged mostly to Robert Gsellman and Josh Smoker, a couple of young pitchers that nobody figured would be pitching huge games in September.

Gsellman threw six gutty innings, pitching out of trouble practically from start to finish, and Smoker, the new lefty specialist, did what has been the impossible for the Mets this season, getting Daniel Murphy out in a big spot — albeit with the help of Michael Conforto’s diving catch — and then whiffing Bryce Harper.

No-name kids to the rescue of the injured stars: Can this magic last?

For now at least, the Mets continue to move forward in the wild-card race, their 3-1 win on Saturday night pulling them to within one game of the Cardinals for the second berth.

And yet if the young pitching owned the night, in some ways this game turned on a lineup decision by Terry Colllins that seemed to reek of desperation. Or hope, if you want to put it a little more kindly.

Curtis Granderson, after all, is having an absolutely horrendous season hitting in the clutch, his numbers with runners in scoring position unfathomably bad, so Terry Collins put him in the clean-up spot, hitting right behind Yoenis Cespedes.

Why? If the manager was being honest he probably would have said, “Well, somebody has to hit there, and I don’t have a lot of good choices.’’

For one thing, Collins was sitting Jay Bruce, who was 0-for-8 lifetime against Nationals starter Tanner Roark. And he felt that putting Michael Conforto in that spot would have added unnecessary pressure, with the 24-year-old back in the big leagues only since Thursday.

So with Asdrubal Cabrera hitting second, behind Jose Reyes, the better to get runners on for Cespedes, the manager truly didn’t have much choice.

And Granderson was 6-for-20 lifetime against Roark, so what the heck.

In truth, however, Collins always seems to have faith in Granderson, even when the numbers say he probably shouldn’t.

“Curtis Granderson’s just got the moxie I guess you could say,’’ was the way Collins put it. “He’s not intimidated, he’s not afraid of the position he’s in. He does what he does, he doesn’t get down when he’s 0-for-4. So I just said, somebody to hit behind Cespedes against the righthander, he was the guy.

“Take it for what it is, but I do believe in him.’’

Sometimes faith is rewarded.

So here were the Mets in the third inning, with nothing going offensively, when Reyes drew a two-out walk and Cabrera doubled him to third, bringing up Cespedes in a huge spot.

Except the Nats weren’t about to let the Cuban slugger beat them. With first base open, Roark threw two fastballs way outside, then walked Cespedes intentionally.

It was the smart play, but would Dusty Baker had done if it the Mets had an imposing lefthanded hitter hitting behind Cespedes? That’s exactly why Sandy Alderson traded for Bruce at the deadline, except he has been a flop so far with his new team.

So here was Granderson, in exactly the type of situation in which he had failed so miserably all season. For the season he was hitting .116 (10-for-86) with runners in scoring position, the lowest such average among players qualifying for official stats in the majors.

Worse yet, with RISP and two outs, as was the situation here, Granderson was 2-for-42 (.048). Even considering that he’s having a lousy all-around season, the RISP numbers are impossibly bad.

Yet this time, perhaps guessing that Roark would look to get ahead in the count with a first-pitch curveball, Granderson lined it into right-center, scoring Reyes and Cabrera to put the Mets ahead 2-1.

Afterward, Granderson being Granderson didn’t offer much insight into the at-bat or what it meant to get such a big hit in the context of his struggles with runners in scoring position.

He said he had no idea what his RISP numbers were, and wouldn’t care one way or the other anyway. He said he took the same approach he always does, looking for a pitch “somewhere in the middle of the plate,’’ and didn’t see it as any more important than any other hit he’s gotten this year.

Collins begged to differ.

“I think that was huge for him,’’ the manager said. “We needed it. I know he’s struggled in those situations, but I do believe he comes up with big hits. Tonight he did.’’

The pitching took care of the rest, including the unexpected heroics from Smoker. This too was a feel thing from Collins, after his top lefty, Jerry Blevins, was hit hard on Friday night.

Smoker rewarded him as well, especially with the strikeout of Harper, making him look bad on a 1-2 slider after getting ahead with 97 and 98 mph fastballs.

Young pitching and a little faith from the manager went a long way on this night. Against all odds, the Mets keep plowing ahead.

Robert Gsellman dances around trouble to lead Mets past Nationals, trim playoff deficit to one game

KRISTIE ACKERT

Updated: Sunday, September 4, 2016, 2:13 AM

In spring training, Robert Gsellman got used to ignoring the calls. With his long brown hair sticking out from under his Mets cap, the minor league pitcher got used to being mistaken for Jacob deGrom, the organization’s big-name, lanky, long-haired ace. Fans would scream “deGrom” trying to get him to come to the fence to sign autographs.

But these days, Gsellman is making a name for himself. He showed on Saturday that he can compete in the same way as deGrom and the Mets’ other big-name pitchers, throwing six gutsy, one-run innings as the Mets beat the Nationals 3-1 at Citi Field.

Gsellman has already seen the change.

“I get people recognizing me for me now,” the 23-year-old said with a smile.

The Nationals may not have heard of him before Saturday, but they left realizing how tough he is. Gsellman held the Nationals to one run on six hits. He walked three and struck out four.

Robert Gsellman holds his glove out to acknowledge teammates at the end of the fourth inning Saturday.

More than that, he gave the Mets more reason to hope, a day after they learned deGrom would miss his next start with arm pain and Noah Syndergaard lost the series opener. With the win, the Mets (70-66) moved just a game behind the skidding Cardinals for the second wild card spot. They also moved 1.5 games ahead of the Pirates and two games ahead of the Marlins, who both lost on Saturday.

The Nationals (79-56) still hold a 9.5-game lead over the Mets in the division.

The Mets got their offense from two unlikely spots. Curtis Granderson, who was 0-for-his-last-22 with runners in scoring position, went to the plate with runners on second and third in the third inning. He knocked home both with a ground-ball single through the shift to give the Mets a 2-1 lead.

In the sixth, after Travis d’Arnaud had lined a two-out single to left field, James Loney followed with his first extra-base hit since Aug. 1, plating the catcher for an insurance run.

Gsellman got in trouble immediately, allowing back-to-back, one-out singles to Jayson Werth and Daniel Murphy in the first before walking Bryce Harper to load the bases. Werth scored on Anthony Rendon’s sacrifice fly to center but Gsellman coaxed a shallow popout from Wilson Ramos to escape further damage.

“I thought I did well to get out with one run,” Gsellman said.

He had to work around base-runners in every inning, including real trouble in the sixth. After giving up a leadoff double to Rendon and walk to Ramos, Gsellman got Ryan Zimmerman to ground out, struck out Danny Espinosa and got pinch-hitter Ben Revere to ground out to end the inning.

“You just take a deep breath, don’t get too ahead of yourself,” Gsellman said of working out of trouble. “I take a step back and throw a pitch and see what they do with it.”

James Loney connects on an RBI double in the sixth inning.

With an effective sinker, Gsellman hasn’t seen hitters do much with it. The Mets also got three scoreless innings from their bullpen.

In the seventh, Jim Henderson gave up a one-out single to Werth, but Michael Conforto robbed Murphy of a hit with a diving grab of his shallow fly ball. Josh Smoker struck out Bryce Harper to end the threat. Addison Reed pitched a scoreless eighth and Jeurys Familia picked up his 45th save of the season.

Gsellman to Henderson to Smoker and then Reed and Familia was not exactly how things were planned out for the season.

The Mets left spring training with what was arguably the best rotation in baseball. They were loaded to battle the Nationals in the division with Matt Harvey, Syndergaard, Steven Matz and deGrom. Now, Syndergaard is the only one of those young arms still healthy and there are opportunities for guys like Gsellman and Seth Lugo, who will start Sunday night’s series finale.

“We want to keep talking about the injury issue, but we’ve asked a lot of some young players and they have stepped up,” Collins said. “ This is what we have. These guys are, you know, I think they’re caught up in it a little bit. They were in the organization last year when things were going great up here, and we’ve asked them to step in and this is their opportunity.”

Saturday night, Gsellman had his opportunity to get people to know him for his own long locks sticking out from his baseball cap. He ran with it.

Michael Conforto’s brilliant glove work bails Mets out of jam

By Zach Braziller September 4, 2016 | 2:15am

The Mets needed Michael Conforto after all — but for his glove and not his bat.

At least that was the case Saturday night, as the Mets moved to within one game of the Cardinals in the race for the National League’s second wild card with an important 3-1 victory over the Nationals at Citi Field.

Conforto made one of the biggest plays of their 10th win in 14 games, a diving catch to snuff out a potential Nationals rally in the seventh inning. With a runner on first base and one out, former Met Daniel Murphy laced a sinking line drive to center field. Conforto got a quick jump, and laid out for the ball, scooping it up just before it hit the grass for the second out. Josh Smoker fanned Bryce Harper to get out of the inning, and preserve the lead.

“I had to go in there and take the risk there, and ended up making the play,” Conforto said.

When Juan Lagares underwent surgery to repair a torn tendon in his left thumb in late July, the Mets began using different players in center field. Conforto saw some time there, with the Mets and down in Triple-A Las Vegas. He’s looked good there — in his first game in center, back on July 24, Conforto made a similar catch to the one on Saturday.

“For a guy who hasn’t played a lot in center field, that’s taking a huge chance,” Collins said. “That ball bounces by him, it’s an easy triple, if not an inside-the-park home run. It’s a credit to his makeup and the fact he’s not afraid to try to make a big play.”

The play overshadowed a solid night at the plate for Conforto, who reached base in four trips, which included doubling off the left field fence. It’s a tiny sample size, just two starts, but Conforto has so far resembled the player that was such a big part of last year’s run to the World Series than the one who failed to replicate that performance this season after a hot April. In his first start, on Thursday, he also doubled to left field. In nine at-bats so far, the 23-year-old outfielder has reached base four times.

After hitting .365 in April, Conforto slumped badly over the ensuing months, leading to a pair of demotions to Triple-A Las Vegas, where he tore the cover off the ball. He returned on Thursday, hoping to find his early-season form, and help the Mets return to the postseason.

“It’s crazy how that all works,” Conforto said. “It’s definitely not the way I wanted this year to go, that’s easy to see and say. But at the same time when you come up in this situation, with the way the team is playing right now, it almost feel like it takes the rest of that stuff away.

“Here we are today, one game [out] of the playoffs. It definitely has a similar feel to last year when I came up.”

Will Lucas Duda play for Mets before season’s over?

By Fred Kerber September 4, 2016 | 2:04am

Maybe, just maybe, there will be a Lucas Duda sighting again at Citi Field before the end of the season.

Duda (stress fracture in back) has begun swinging at soft-toss pitches at the Mets minor league complex in Port St. Lucie and could take full batting practice at some point next week, general manager Sandy Alderson said. The Mets aren’t ruling out the first baseman returning before the end of the regular season, but they aren’t rushing him either.

“He either makes it back or he doesn’t. How he’s used if he does make it back is a whole other issue,” Alderson said before the Mets’ 3-1 win over the Nationals on Saturday night.

Duda went on the DL May 23 after 130 at bats over 39 games.

On the pitching front, reports say Zack Wheeler has been shut down for the rest of the season and won’t resume throwing until he prepares for spring training. Wheeler, whom the Mets originally hoped to have back by the All-Star Game this season, underwent Tommy John surgery in March 2015. He suffered a setback several weeks ago. Wheeler last pitched in September 2014.

Addison Reed pitched the eighth for the Mets and got his 32nd hold. But manager Terry Collins had special praise for lefty Josh Smoker, another rookie who finished the seventh against a couple of pretty good lefties, Daniel Murphy and Bryce Harper and retired both — though he needed an “amazing” catch by Michael Conforto on center to stop Murphy.

“Those two guys are really tough,” Collins said. “Last night they got two hits off Jerry [Blevins]. I just said, ‘Tonight I’m going to bring the power guy and see.’ He throws strikes. Granted, maybe it doesn’t have a lot of great movement to it. But it’s strikes. And 97 mph, that plays up here.”

Said Smoker: “They’re both aggressive guys. … I knew I had to try to stay away from them as much as I could. If I was going to go in, I had to go in hard. So I’m not too good at going inside sometimes so I basically told myself to stay away from them.

“And I got away with the Murphy pitch. He hit that pretty hard. Harper I did a little bit better job of staying away and had a pretty good idea he was going to be hunting the fastball with two strikes so tried to put him away with a slider outside and he bit on it.”

Neil Walker confirmed that he will undergo his back surgery in the upcoming week but “I don’t have the exact date” yet.

Manager Terry Collins said Rafael Montero likely will be his choice to start Tuesday in Jacob deGrom’s spot. DeGrom is expected to miss at least one start with forearm soreness.

“We’re leaning toward Montero,” Collins said. “He’s supposed to pitch tonight, probably we’ll cut him back a little bit make sure he’s available Tuesday.”

Montero threw 29 pitches in 1 ¹/₃ innings for Double-A Binghamton Saturday. He gave up three runs on two hits.

The Mets will not see Max Scherzer Sunday. The Nationals will go with right-hander Reynaldo Lopez against Seth Lugo.

“Just giving Max an extra day,” Nationals manager Dusty Baker said. “It’s that time of the year. You’d love for Max to pitch against the Mets but the extra day is more important than Max pitching here.”

Gymnast Laurie Hernandez of Old Bridge, N.J. who won a gold medal as part of Team USA’s “Final Five” gymnastics medal and also won a silver individual medal, threw out the first pitch. Hernandez wowed the crowd by doing a somersault off the mound before throwing to Rene Rivera.

Nationals’ Trea Turner was the NL Rookie of the Month for August after hitting .357 with five homers.

“I don’t know who else who could have done any better. Quite frankly, I didn’t even know they have a Rookie of the Month,” Baker said. … Since returning from the disabled list, Asbdrubal Cabrera is batting .420 (21-50) with five doubles, six home runs and 14 RBIs in 15 games. He doubled and scored Saturday.

The Mets had their nightly version of “Where’s Wilmer?” Wilmer Flores was in the starting lineup, again against a right-hander, and playing second base.

“I’m comfortable wherever,” said Flores who has played every infield position in the past month, “Maybe before I wasn’t. This year, I’m comfortable wherever I’m playing.”

And comfortable whoever he is hitting against. Entering Saturday, Flores was hitting .289 with three homers and 12 RBIs over his previous 10 games.

“I don’t see the talk about righty, lefty. Honestly, I’m an everyday player. I hit lefties better than righties but that doesn’t mean I’m not able to hit righties,” Flores said.

“In some cases, a key situation is OK and you have to go with a percentage. I understand that lefty-lefty. I see some lefty hitters and they have a really hard time picking up the ball,” Flores said. “But for me, it’s pretty much the same thing. My whole career, I’ve pretty much only faced righties. This year I think I’ve seen more lefties but it doesn’t make any difference.”

Why Terry Collins is perfect manager for these Mets

By Larry Brooks September 3, 2016 | 11:51pm

Joe McCarthy and Casey Stengel were called push-button managers while directing the Lordly Yankees of the ’30s, ’40s, ’50s and 1960 to 18 AL pennants and 14 World Series.

Terry Collins of the 2016 Mets only wishes he had the buttons to push that his Hall of Fame forebears did on the other side of town, but there is one button this manager never would go near, and that is the panic button, no matter how much of the roster is disabled, no matter how much it appears that fate has conspired against his team.

“The minute [players] sense panic in the manager, the minute they sense panic in the coaches, they panic,” Collins said before his team celebrated a Robert Gsellman Day with a 3-1 victory over the Nationals that moved the Mets to within one game of the Cardinals for the second wild-card spot. “I don’t care if they’re veterans or if they’re young guys. It is what it is, you have to deal with it, but the only thing that matters is the attitude in that room, and that is to stay positive as much as you can.”

The Mets would have been excused if they dropped out of the running under the staggering weight of their own injuries that — where to begin? — limited David Wright to 164 plate appearances, Lucas Duda to 145 and Matt Harvey to 92 innings pitched for the season.

Begin there, add DL stints for Yoenis Cespedes, Neil Walker, Asdrubal Cabrera, Steven Matz, Travis d’Arnaud and then take into account the discomfort that has afflicted Jacob deGrom and at times Noah Syndergaard, and the Mets’ position in the wild-card chase is a mini-miracle in its own right.

The 67-year-old Collins, in the first year of a two-year extension he received following the World Series defeat to Kansas City, has established the tone for this group that often seems undermanned but rarely, if ever, is outworked or fails to perform to the max. True enough, sometimes the manager’s bullpen maneuvers can be perplexing, and sometimes the club suffers when Collins manages with his heart rather than his head.

But his big heart has become part of the DNA of a team that plays with it regardless of who is down or out. Make no mistake. This is his team.

And his team — his battered and imperfect team — is one game out of a playoff berth with four weeks remaining in the season.

“I think it starts here,” Collins said when asked if he or the club’s veteran leadership core is responsible for establishing a tone in the face of adversity. “I know you guys think I blow a lot of smoke, but I still think that’s how you have to do it. You walk in every day as if it’s a new day. You can’t worry about yesterday. Just like the other day, we won the game and were heading into Sept. 1, and yeah, the Sept. 1 callups were coming, but the one thing I told those guys was how impressed I was with the fact that we’re starting September in a pennant race. There’s nothing like it because they didn’t let down or get down and kept it going.”

Four of the nine Mets in the April 3 Opening Night lineup in Kansas City are done for the year — Wright, Walker, Juan Lagares and Harvey — with the team holding out hope Duda, sidelined since May 20, might be available to make a late-season cameo. Saturday’s batting order was the club’s 111th different one in 136 games.

“It’s changed the entire dynamic,” Collins said. “We play the Cardinals, we play the Giants, and it’s the same lineup every night. [The Nationals], they have one switch [for this game]. That’s a luxury we don’t have. We have to mix and match, but I also think what that does is, when you’re coming to the ballpark, you have a chance to be in the game so nobody’s coming in here saying, ‘Well, I know that I’m not playing.’ That’s an attitude we can’t have here.”

The Mets play hard, and they play hard for Collins, a people person who not only refused to pile on Cespedes for playing a round of golf the morning of a game at Yankee Stadium (while nursing his quad) but endorsed his most important everyday player’s right to do so. A mutual trust flows between Collins and the playing personnel.

The Mets have question marks aplenty at the top of the stretch. Collins isn’t one of them. There’s no quit in him or his team. No panic either.
