NEWS BRIEF

Hi Lone Lakers,

LLPOA summer season shifts into first gear this weekend with the 2016 membership drive. Association dues are $25 again this year. With your membership you will receive a “Clean, Drain and Dry” sign to place on your dock or boat. This is the association’s way of bringing attention to the concerted effort to stop the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS) on Lone Lake and all lakes in Minnesota. Thanks to Bev Napurski (LLPOA Board director) who produced the signs.

We also want to thank the small but determined road clean up group that met on a cold and windy Saturday, May 14 to clean the environment around Lone Lake. The hardy group had coffee and rolls, took a group picture and then got right to the road clean up. They were….. and we

thank them for their dedication! We could use a few more volunteers this fall and next year, too. Make it a family event.

ACLARA (Aitkin County Lakes and Rivers Association) held its

annual DNR AIS Boat Inspection Training and Certification session at the Hazelton Township Hall on May 21. Walt and Dianne Weisser from our lake association organized and hosted the event. Boat inspectors must take the in-person AIS training every three years and an on-line refresher course in the intervening years. The online course with videos help boat inspectors stay current with best practices to prevent the spread of AIS. I personally did the review on-line as I was (To Page 2)

Steve Frazier - LLPOA President

County funds additional boat inspections, but

volunteers still needed to match grant

Aitkin County granted funds to LLPOA for the second year in a row to pay for trained inspectors to work at our public launch each weekend between the fishing opener and Labor Day.  This grant requires LLPOA to cover 20% of the total inspection days with volunteers or to pay the cost of inspectors.  LLPOA wishes to be able to meet this requirement with current volunteers, plus new ones.

Your support is needed: we must fill the inspection slots to meet this 20% requirement.  For more about the changes in the AIS program, go to page 3.

President’s Note (from page 1) certified in 2014, and the six short videos were very informative. Linda Szymanski is our AIS Coordinator and is doing a great job facilitating the county inspectors and our own team of lake ambassadors. We are making some changes in our AIS Inspection Program and look for that report in this News Brief on page 1 and 3. Please step-up and get certified as a volunteer and help in the fight to stop the spread of AIS.

Finally, we have proclaimed this year to be the year of the Monarch butterfly. If you have milkweed on your property, do not cut them down or

run them over because Monarchs will only lay their eggs on milkweed, and caterpillars only eat milkweed leaves. We will be featuring the Monarch butterfly at our annual meeting on July 23 with a guest speaker and also distributing milkweed seeds to plant in the fall. In the meantime, take pictures of butterflies for our Lake

Association Butterfly Picture Contest also to be held at the annual meeting.

Thanks you for your support of the LLPOA and we’ll see you on the lake!

To keep Lone Lake safe from the spread of invasive species remember to “Clean-Drain-Dry”:

Clean—inspect closely and remove all plants, animals, and mud (it is the law)

Drain—drain spaces or items that can hold water (it is the law)

Dry—dry boats for five days or more before launching in other waters (recommended)

DID YOU KNOW?

In Minnesota is it illegal to:

• Transport watercraft with the drain plug still in.

• Arrive at lake access with drain plug in place.

• Transport aquatic plants, zebra mussels, or other prohibited species, whether dead or alive.

• Launch watercraft with prohibited species attached.

• Transport water from other Minnesota lakes or rivers.

• Release live bait into the water.

All DNR-trained watercraft inspectors stationed around the state are authorized to help ensure boats and trailers are clean and free of AIS before entering or leaving a lake, river or other body of water. Whether they work for the DNR, or for a county or other local unit of government, inspectors are there to help make sure boaters are not in violation of AIS laws and protect our lakes and rivers.

Even though a fierce wind was blowing off the lake and temps were unseasonably low, a few brave souls turned up for the Spring Road Clean-up Event, including (L to R) Dick Preiner, Dave Scott, Bob Kosloski, JoAnn Preiner, Chris Johnson, and Elert Johnson. Behind the scenes volunteers included Marty Cook, Jennifer O’Neill, Walt and Diane Weisser, Steve Frazier, and Roy and Jane Carlson, and another man and his grandson, whose name we did not get!

Changes made to Lone Lake AIS boat inspection program There are two changes this year:

• Instead of asking volunteers to work on Memorial Day weekend, we would like volunteers to work the weekend of July 22-24.  This is an experiment to see if our volunteer inspection coverage percentage increases by inspecting on non-holiday weekends.

• We have eliminated having volunteers work the 7-10 a.m. slot due to such low numbers of boaters entering and exiting the lake during these hours.

Like last year, LLPOA is asking volunteers to pick the days and slots they wish to cover. There are more time slots than inspectors, so people are asked to pick two or three times they wish to cover. Since there is a chance that individuals may request the same day/slot, the requests will be honored based on first requests received.

The chart shows the open days and times. Contact Linda Szymanski, LLPOA AIS coordinator, at [email protected]. Indicate the days and times that will work for you. If you are open to any day/time, please respond with this information, as well.
