A well-crafted credo uses just a few words to paint a picture of an organization. Notable Mission Statements include: The Humane Society: Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty; Wounded Warrior Project: To honor and empower wounded warriors; Livestrong: To inspire and empower people affected by cancer; National Wildlife Federation: Inspiring Americans to protect wildlife for our children’s future; and, American Heart Association: To build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. My own mission statement reads: “Howard Orthodontics uses a personalized approach to orthodontic care to provide beautiful, healthy smiles”. So, what is the mission of the LCDS? It is available on our website and reads: “It is the mission of the Lancaster County Dental Society to be the recognized source for serving the needs and interests of its members.” It adds that, “The members of the LCDS are committed to providing an unsurpassed level of professional, compassionate oral health care that is accessible by all, and to educate the public regarding the value of oral health as it relates to total well-being.” The conversation that prompted me to examine our mission was with LCDS Past-President, Dr. Pete Ross. He asked if supporting the education of our dental residents is part of our mission. While we don’t specifically include dental resident education in our mission, I expect that most of us recognize the importance. I need to provide full disclosure and admit that I am certainly biased, having participated in some form of dental education since completing my dental training. I consider the chance to participate in the educational process an honor and privilege and one that certainly benefits the teacher as much as the student. So, here is your call to action. I am going to ask you to consider including resident education as part of your own mission. In this issue of The Handpiece, Dr. Kevin Risko and the LGH dental residency are providing an invitation to members of the LCDS to refer patients who may not have the means to acquire needed dental treatment. Specifically, they would like to offer periodontal, endodontic, and implant procedures that you may like to provide for them but are a financial impossibility. Importantly, upon completion of the planned care, the patient will be returned back to you for continuation of their dental care. Your participation will ensure that our residents, some of whom will remain colleagues in the dental community upon graduation, receive excellent training in dentistry. I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to serve the LCDS as President and welcome comments and questions that lead us to examine our mission and principles. With kind regards, Eric Eric W. THOUGHTs TO PONDER:

The Lancaster County Career and Technology Center is back in session with a new class of 35 dental assisting students eager to start their new career. This year will be exciting as we are, again, seeing patients in the dental clinic beginning on Sept 17th here at the CTC. Dr. Marie Kelly will be seeing patients, who are either economically disadvantaged or have no dental insurance, for exams, x-rays, restorations and extractions. The charges will remain the same as last year, $25 for a restoration or extraction. This allows our students the opportunity to experience firsthand dental assisting prior to sending them to your offices for their clinical rotations in the spring. The students are able to integrate theory hands-on at the school clinic which makes the transition to your offices much smoother. We have had many positive comments on how the clinic has impacted the students as well as the community. This year we are having our students contact their personal dentist early in hopes of securing a rotation in your office during the months of April and May, 2017. We have found that when a student knows that they will be working in an office where they are a patient, and are familiar with the staff and the dentist, they actually work harder and set higher goals. We hope that this will also be beneficial to the offices as far as preparing for a student’s rotation. After 38 years of continued partnership with the LCDS, it is a pleasure to continue to educate dental assistants who will be joining your teams throughout Lancaster County this year and in the years to come. We could not have come this far without your support. THANK YOU!!!!! If we can answer questions or help with a dental assisting need in your office, please do not hesitate to contact us. Warm Regards,

Kay Hudak and Dr. Marie Kelly Dental Assisting Instructors

Dental Access Lancaster County (DALCO), a partnership among Lancaster County Dental Society, local dentists and Lancaster General Health, provides a “dental home” for low-income, uninsured patients. A dental home is a dental practice that provides ongoing care, including routine cleanings. Patients pay a small co-pay for each visit based on their income. DALCO’s database includes 120 local dental providers. Though the list continues to grow, it is small in comparison to the dental needs of the uninsured in this community. DALCO currently has a 3 month wait list. We are always looking for more dentists to participate with the DALCO program. If everyone does a little, no one will feel they are doing a lot. The DALCO providers have provided over $1,133,000 worth of donated dental care. We realize many dentists already link with other local organizations to provide dental care to those in need; but we are asking you to consider joining DALCO as well. Signing up to see even one patient WILL make a difference. If you would like to join this list of extraordinary community minded professionals or have questions about the DALCO program, please contact: Christine Eyer (717)544-3279 [email protected]

This seems to be a trend in reducing clinical requirement in dental schools. At least when a dental school graduate goes into a post-doctoral residency program, such as ours, they gain more didactic and clinical experience and are better equipped to treat patients by the time they complete their program. This is where you as fellow dental practitioners can help expand our resident’s clinical knowledge and skills. We’re actively looking for patients with major financial constraints who may need placement and restoration of single implants, placement of multiple implants in the mandibular arch in conjunction with fabrication of an implant supported overdenture, first molar endodontics, or patients who require some type of periodontal procedure such as a crown lengthening or a connective tissue graft. Your patients would be receiving treatment at a more affordable lower cost and the dental residents will gain invaluable experience being able to perform these advanced dental procedures that they rarely get to perform in their dental schools. Please be assured that these procedures will be supervised by our outstanding faculty specialists. Once the procedures are completed, the patient will always be returned back to the referring member’s practices. As many of you know, we currently work out of the South East Lancaster Health Services Dental Clinic on South Duke Street in Lancaster. I thank you in advance for making it your mission to help in the education of our recently graduated dentists here in Lancaster County. (You can email Susan Scott at [email protected] to schedule a patient at our GPR clinic location. If you have any questions or concerns, you can email me at [email protected])

My name is Kevin Risko and I am the Program Director of the General Practice Residency Program at Lancaster General Health/Penn Medicine. I have been a Program Director of two GPR programs for over 18 years now. Unfortunately, I personally feel that the clinical training that the dental students are receiving has been inadequate. I recently interviewed two University of Pittsburgh dentalstudents and was surprised to learn that they only now need two canals to complete for their endodontic requirement and two crowns to complete for their prosthetic requirement.

The Alliance held our first meeting of the year (2016-2017) at the Starbucks on Fruitville Pike. Pumpkin Spice latte, anyone? We discussed plans for the upcoming year. On the schedule are our usual fundraisers and charitable activiites. Look for the Holiday Sharing Card and Christmas Party in November/ December; the Poster Contest and Dental Health Kit Stuffing in January/February, and our New Members and Past Presidents' Dinner in May. We were also very excited that the LCDS is bringing back their Annual Dinner Dance, May 5th, 2017! Put it on your calendars and hope to see you all there!
