Paul Haynes is in his fourth season as head coach at Kent State University and his 11th season affiliated with the program.Haynes was introduced as theGoldenFlashes’21stheadfootballcoachonDec.18,2012,25years after he walked on to play football at Kent State asacollegefreshman.By season’s end, five Flashes were named to the All-MAC Team, 14 earned Academic All-MAC honors and five werenamedMACDistinguishedScholarAthletes.Forthe first time in program history, two Flashes earned CoSIDAAcademicAll-Americahonors.In his first season, Haynes helped produce five All-MAC selections, an SI.comAll-American (RooseveltNix),anAcademicAll-American (Jordan Italiano) and fourAcademic All-MAC selections, which tied for the second mostintheconference.In 2013, Haynes became the first Kent State rookie head

coach to win a season opener since 1988. Hewas also theFlashes’ first rookie head coach to win a MAC road opener since1986.Attheendof theseason,hejoinedGlenMasonas the only Kent State head coaches to defeat both Miami andOhiointheirfirstseason.InMayof 2014,DriArcherbecame just the fifthKent

State player since 1974, to be selected in one of the firstthreeroundsof theNFLDraft.Following the 2014 season, 10 Golden Flashes earned spots on the Academic All-MAC Team, including Italiano, who was named to the Academic All-AmericaFirstTeam.Sevenof those10werenamedDistinguishedScholarAthletes,tyingKentStateforthemostselectionsintheconference.ThreeFlashesearned all-conference honors, including Casey Pierce, whobecamejustthethirdplayerinKentStatehistoryselectedtoplayintheSeniorBowl.Haynes,46,spentthe2012seasonasthedefensiveco-ordinator at Arkansas and also served as the secondary coachfortheRazorbacks.HaynesjoinedtheArkansasstaff inDecember 2011, taking over the Razorbacks’defensewhenitdominatedNo.11KansasState29-16

intheAT&TCottonBowl.Haynes spent the previous seven seasons at Ohio State, serving as the co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach in 2011 and as defensive backs coach from 2005-10.He alsoworkedwith formerHeadCoachDarrellHazellonJimTressel’sOhioStatestaff from2005-10.In Haynes’ seven years in Columbus, the Buckeyes com-pileda66-11record,wonsixBigTentitlesandplayedin six consecutive BCS games.Ohio State defensivebacks also boasted five first-team All-Americans and 10 first-teamAll-BigTenselectionsinthoseseasons.Nineof the defensive backs Haynes coached at Ohio State wereselectedinthe2006-12NFLDrafts,includingfirstroundersMalcomJenkinsandDonteWhitner.In2008,JenkinswontheJimThorpeAward.Haynes spent two seasons as an assistant coach at KentStateunderDeanPees,whoisnowthedefensivecoordinator of the Baltimore Ravens. After coachingthe defensive backs in 1999, Haynes was promoted to assistantheadcoachandsafetiescoachin2000.Haynesthen moved on to the NFL in 2001, spending one season as the defensive quality control coach of theJacksonvilleJaguars.Haynes’ coaching career also includes stops at Northern Iowa (running backs/secondary, 1997-98), Ferris State (defensive backs, 1995-96), BowlingGreen (graduateassistant,1994)andSt.FrancisDeSalesHighSchool.

UNDERDOGS ALL SEASONKentStatewaspickedtofinishsixthof sixEastDivisionteamsinboththeMACMediaandMACCoachespreseasonpolls.TheunderdogroleisnothingnewtotheFlashes,whohavejusttwowinningseasonsinthelast29years.Even during its 11-win regular season of 2012, Kent State was an underdog in fiveof itsvictories.

MAC BOWL SPOTSThisseason,theMACisaprimarypartnerinfivebowlgames:theMiamiBeachBowl, the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl, the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, the PopeyesBahamasBowlandtheDollarGeneralBowl.

The MAC will also be a secondary partner for both the Quick Lane Bowl and theSanDiegoCountyCreditUnionPoinsettiaBowl.
