Dear Resident –

As the winter sun sets on 2015 and rises on 2016, the Parks Department is taking a moment

to reflect on the past year. Our department has grown tremendously, and thanks to your

support we have greater community connections, event/program attendance, and

volunteer engagement than ever before.

Planning for 2016, we strive to make smart and thoughtful decisions that build a vibrant,

entrepreneurial and sustainable Fishers into the future! Here are a few ways we are doing

just that:

• During fall 2015 we launched our Nature First program with HSE Schools, and this

initiative will continue into 2016. This new, collaborative partnership connects all first grade

students with a unique opportunity to combine curriculum with the natural environment at Ritchey

Woods Nature Preserve – a beautiful, natural “classroom” for exploration, learning, and

recreation right here in Fishers.

• We have some exciting facilities coming online just in time for 2016, including Flat Fork

Creek Park (during winter 2015) and the addition of a brand new toddler playground at Roy G.

Holland Memorial Park (summer 2016).

• The Parks & Recreation team also continues to brainstorm diverse programs and

community-wide events for residents of all ages. As you read through the Fun Guide

today you will see brand new programs for young children all the way to senior

residents in our community. We look forward to hearing your feedback from

these events!

As we embark on a new year, we encourage your feedback through

social media or by talking with staff at our events. You can follow us

on Twitter, like us on Facebook and sign up for Fishers Alert email

notifications to ensure you don’t miss anything happening this season.

We look forward to connecting with you in person, or digitally, soon!

Sincerely,

Tony Elliot

Volunteer Spotlight: Keep Fishers Beautiful

As winter fades and the buds start to blossom, we’re reminded of the vibrant natural community we have here in Fishers. Keep Fishers beautiful is a continued effort that takes support from local organizations, city officials, residents and volunteers, and this year, the spring event returns with many ways to get involved.

For the third consecutive spring, city officials are helping residents get engaged to make a difference. Spring Recycling Day hosted by Fishers DPW is an ideal opportunity to dispose of unwanted materials. Spring Service Day presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods also returns to Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve in an effort to clear invasive plants. The Keep Fishers Beautiful Neighborhood Blitz also returns this year, and includes projects at different locations throughout Fishers.

Getting involved is easy! Contact Dan Domsic and start exploring the opportunities that make the most sense with your interests.

Ritchey Woods Nature PresreveConnecting with nature; get outdoors!

“I want to ignite a curiosity within people, especially children by exposing them to the natural environment. If a child sees something wonderful out in nature I cannot help but feel that perhaps a fire will start.”

Danesa StolzChief Naturalist@RitcheyWoods [email protected]

In Fishers, we strive to make smart decisions today that pave the way towards a vibrant future years from now, and that theme runs through everything we do! This spring, there are countless ways you can support our natural environment and expand your knowledge about our nature here in Fishers.

We are proactive… about nature engagement!

Volunteerism is essential to preserving the natural spaces in our community, and we have many wonderful volunteers! This spring, consider getting involved with Spring Service Day. Since 2005 this event has hosted over 1700 volunteers and resulted in 2500 service hours. See page 7 for details and to get involved. We also strive to be engaged in conversations about development. The new partnership with the Indianapolis Airport Authority

provides a unique opportunity for us to evaluate Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve and find new ways to improve that asset like never before.

We believe in having fun… and learning, too!

Part of my job is connecting residents of all ages with nature, and we have many upcoming events for just that.

• Winnie the Pooh Day returns to help young children explore the real-life inspiration behind the famous characters!

• Heart Hikes at Ritchey Woods will also return this February, offering a much needed mental break from our busy lives.

Page 23: 2016 Jan.-Apr. Fun Guide

• We also look forward to Arbor Day and National S’mores Day next summer. Stay tuned to the Fun Guide for details on all of these events!

We strive to foster inquisition!

Entrepreneurship is a pillar of our community, and we approach our environment with that same attitude. In 2015 we launched Nature First, a partnership with first grade classrooms at Hamilton Southeastern Schools. Each class will visit Ritchey Woods in the fall and spring for a study trip that is used to enhance classroom curriculum. Nature First was built around state standards in science, English/language arts, mathematics, social studies, health and wellness, and physical education. By encouraging their curiosity and concern for our natural world, children will gain a lifelong appreciation for preserving our environment.

OUR ENVIRONMENT

Don’t let the nature exploration stop,

get engaged! Follow @RitcheyWoods on Twitter for specific ways you can get involved. We’ll be Tweeting

them out all season long!
