Field trips

Tour option 1: Historical Town Zhujiajiao

Located in a suburb of Shanghai city, Zhujiajiao is an ancient water town

well-known throughout the country, with a history of more than 1700 years. Covering

an area of 47 square kilometres, the little fan-shaped town glimmers like a bright pearl

in the landscape of lakes and mountains. Endowed with another elegant name - "Pearl

Stream" - the little town is the best-preserved among the four ancient towns in

Shanghai. Unique old bridges across bubbling streams, small rivers shaded by willow

trees, and houses with courtyards attached all transport people who have been living

amidst the bustle and hustle of the modern big city to a brand-new world full of

antiquity, leisure and tranquility.

Tour charges: Entrance ticket 20 CNY per person, no other costs.

Time: August 17, 1:30pm-5:00pm

China’s biggest metropolis, its history dates back about 3000 years. As the centre of

the Wu culture and Wu Kingdom and as an important trading city at the Grand Canal,

Suzhou has historically been much more important than Shanghai. Due to a height

restriction and exceptional conservation efforts, much of the historical urban structure

can still be appreciated during a visit to the old town.

Our excursion will introduce this city through an understanding of its boundaries.

These will include the border between Shanghai and Suzhou, the boundary between

the old town and the booming new development zones, the historical city wall as the

most visible border, and small-scale urban boundaries such as the gated historical

gardens in the old town. The dual aim is to recognise and appreciate the unique

character of Suzhou, but also to deepen the understanding of urban borders and

contemporary Chinese urbanism.

Leader: Dr. Werner Breitung

Tour charges: 100 CNY per person, plus charge for meals.

Time: August 20, 8:30am-6:30pm. The trip will end in Suzhou at about 5:00pm

and the group will be back Shanghai at 6:30pm.

Assembing place: The Chairman Mao statue before Geography building
