MEDIAEVENTS,INTERVIEWSANDPHOTOOPPORTUNITESTheCincinnatiFlyingPigMarathonpoweredbyP&Goffersanumberofopportunitiesformediacoverage beyond the race itself. This is just an outline of some of the activities and humanintereststoriesthatsurroundtheweekend:CharitiesMorethan250charitiesusetheCincinnatiFlyingPigMarathonasafundraiser,frommanningwaterstopstosponsoringrunnerswhoraisemoneythroughpledges.Charitiesrangefromhighschool booster groups to the Leukemia LymphomaSociety Team in Training, theMarathon’ssignaturecharity.In2015alonetheFlyingPigraisednearly$1.5millionforcharities.VolunteersIt takes some 6,500 volunteers to make the Marathon run smoothly each year. ManyvolunteershavebeenwiththeMarathonsincethebeginning.JeanetteKielyisthePigvolunteercoordinatoratjeanette@flyingpigmarathon.com.WalkersTheMarathonwelcomesandencourageswalkersforalldivisions.Thewalkerswillgooffwiththefullmarathonfieldat6:30a.m.Thecoursewillcloseonacontinuouspaceof16:00minutespermile.Specialtrainingprogramsareofferedtotrainthewalkersforthe26.2milesandcanbefoundatwww.flyingpigmarathon.com.MarathonFoundersThe Cincinnati Flying PigMarathon beganwith a group of local runners, a dream and a barnapkinwithaMarathonroutescrawledonit.SeveralofthoseoriginalplannersremainwiththeMarathon and are eager to share their story on how it all began, including Bob Coughlin,presidentofPaycor,andBobRoncker,founderofTheRunningSpot.TrainingProgramsAtrainingprogramisavailableforwalkersandrunnersofallabilities.AnumberofarearunningstoresandclubsscheduletrainingprogramsforalldistancesattheFlyingPig.MarathonMedalThe Flying PigMarathonmedal is one of themost covetedmedals amongmarathoners. Pumpn’RunTheCincinnatiFlyingPigMarathonispartneringagainwiththeLord’sGymforaPumpn’Runfundraisingevent,designed for runners,cross trainersandweight lifters.ThePNRreducesacontestant's overall event run time, based on how many times he/she can bench press apercentageof their bodyweight.Originally justoffered in the5K, thePumpn’RunnowhasexpandedtoeveryMarathonweekendevent.OldSpiceHighEndurance‘MiletotheFinish’Onceagain,OldSpiceHighEndurancewillofferprizestothemen’sandwomen’sfastestfinalmileoftheMarathoncourse.MarathonposterSincethebeginningoftheMarathon,Tremor(formerly‘mktg’andCoActiveMarketingGroup)has designed the marketing ‘look’ of the Marathon, including the medal design and thecommemorativeposter.Theposterisgiventoparticipantsaspartoftheir‘goodie’bags.“Hams”atthePig:Local “Ham” radio volunteers arepositionedat eachmileof theMarathon toprovide safetyupdates along the course. Since the first Marathon in 1999, members of the Queen CityEmergencyNethavevolunteeredtheirtime,servicesandequipmenttotheCincinnatiFlyingPigMarathon. ECONOMICIMPACTAneconomicimpactstudyproducedin2012byXavierUniversityshowedthatrunnersgeneratemorethan$12millioneconomicimpactinGreaterCincinnati.Thatincludesspendingbyoutoftownparticipants,localparticipantsandtheirguestsandfamilieswhocometotowntocheerthemon.Thenumberincludesmorethan$1.3millionspentforlodgingand$1.2millionspentat restaurants, bars, entertainment venues and at themarathonExpo. Participants and theirfamiliesalsospentmorethanaquartermilliondollarsovertheweekendatdepartmentstoresandotherretailoutlets.Inaddition,thenumberofjobscreatedorsustainedbythe“Pig”isasmanyas280inthearea.THEROUTEThe Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon course is generally unchanged. The Flying Pig MarathonstartinglineremainsonMehringWay,onthesouthsideofPaulBrownStadium,abouthalfwaybetweenElmandCentral.Becauseoftheincreasednumberofparticipants,thewiderareasofthestreetseasecrowdinginthefirstfewyardsoftheevent.Therearecorralsalongthestartingline,withtheeliterunnersclosesttothestartingline.Thecorralswillbereleasedinincrementsasjudgedbyracecourseofficialstopreventcongestion.Thisistomakeeach‘start’specialforthatgroupofparticipants.BridgeCrossingThis year runners will cross the Taylor-Southgate Bridge into Newport, Kentucky, first. Fromadreamtoreality,theCincinnatiFlyingPigMarathongotofftoaflyingstartonMother’sDay, 1999. Some 6,150 runners started downtown, wound through the neighborhoods andfinishedattheMuseumCenter,UnionTerminal.Initsfirstrunning,the“Pig”gotravereviewsinMarathon & Beyond. The Pig scored 901 on a scale of 1,000 — the sixth-best of anymarathonreviewed.

The inauguralFlyingPigwas thesecond-largest firstmarathon inhistory,afterSanDiego's in1998,andimmediatelyamongthetop10inthecountry.

EllyRono,a29-year-oldKenyanlivinginEvansville,Ind.,ranawaywiththemen'srace,finishingin 2 hours, 21 minutes and 15 seconds. Rono broke away at the 4-mile mark and wasunchallengedtherestoftheway.

SommerSettall,a22-year-oldstudentattheUniversityofCincinnati,wonthewomen'sracein2:58:10.ItwasthefirstwininamajorraceforSettall,whohasbeenrunningseriouslyforonly21/2years.

RonoandSettalleachreceived$1,500fortheirvictories.

FifthStreetfromSycamoretoBroadwaywaslinedwithmorethan6,100runnersforthesecondedition of the Flying Pig Marathon, nearly 40 percent of whom were running in their firstMarathon.

RudolfJun,a28-yearoldnativeoftheCzechRepublicwhotrainedinFt.WaltonBeach,Fl.,ledtheentire race, asdid thewomen’swinner, PrincetonHighSchool graduateandSharonville,Ohio native Rebecca Vonderhaar Gallaher. Gallaher set a new women’s course record of2:49:32intheprocess.

The 2000 course changed, with the finish linemoved to Sawyer Point to accommodate thecrowdsandtheVictoryParty.

TheFlyingPigMarathonmovedfromitstraditionalMother’sDaydateforthefirsttimein2001,andthechangeseemedtosuitrunners,asregistrationstartedatarecordpace.Nearly1,000runnershadregisteredasofJanuary8,threetimestheamountduringthesametimetheyearbefore. Almost 70 percent of those registrations were online. Relay registration for theMarathonstartedJanuary8,andwithinthefirst24hours,the100onlineregistrationopeningsfortheopenrelaywerefilled.

The course itself was changed again, with the start moving from Fifth to Seventh Streetdowntown.Theeasternsectionofthecourse,alongRedBankRoad,WoosterPike,WilmerandKelloggavenues,was trimmedback. Instead, runnersmovedontoDeltaAvenueand throughMt.LookoutSquare.ThemileagewasmadeupwithawesternroutealongCentralParkwayandSpringGroveAvenue.

A record 9,762 participants signed up for the weekend's Flying Pig Marathonactivities,aninepercentincreasefromthepreviousyear.Intheopenmarathon,4,610runnersparticipated,with2,052intheErnst&Young4-personrelay,924intheOutbackSteakhouse2-personrelayand1,650inthenewPapaJohn's10K.

Anotherfirstin2003wasthetwowinners,JohnAerniandLisaVeneziano,werebothfromtheCincinnati area. John became the first Cincinnati-area male to win the open division of theMarathon,whileLisa’svictorycameinherfirstPig.

May2,2004For the second year in a row, the men’s and women’s winners of the Cincinnati Flying PigMarathon were residents of the Queen City. Thirty-seven year-old Thomas Lentz of Cliftonbravedtherainy,windyconditionsandalateattackoflegcrampstopullawayfromthefieldandwin themen’s division in 2:38:07. In thewomen’s division, 25-year old P.J. Ball, also ofClifton, won in convincing form, with a time of 3:05:52, nearly two minutes ahead of hernearestcompetitor.The2004editionoftheFlyingPigMarathonsawthelargestweekendfieldeverregisteredforthe two days of events, 12,124, amore than 20 percent jump in registrations over the yearbefore. CINCINNATI (May1,2011)–Arecordweekendregistrationofmorethan30,000runnersandwalkershighlightedthe13thrunningoftheCincinnatiFlyingPigMarathonpoweredbyP&G.The two-day totalof30,408participants included5,083 for the fullmarathon,12,155 for thehalfmarathonand3,044fortherelays,allrunningonSunday.Thewinnerofthemen’sdivisionoftheMarathonwas24-year-oldKieranO’ConnorfromNewYork,NewYorkinapersonalbesttimeof2:28:02.O’Connor,a2009graduateoftheUniversityof Notre Dame, won the Pig in only his secondmarathon ever. This wasMcDonaugh’s fourthmarathonandherfirstunderthreehours.“MymomencouragedmetobeginrunningwhenIwaslittle,”saidMcDonaugh.“BecauseofmyeyesightIcouldneverplaysports,butIcoulddothis.”IntheFlyingPigHalfMarathon,themen’swinnerwas18-year-oldRyanJamesofBelfastMaine,running his first half marathon with more than a dozen teammates from Berry College inGeorgia. Winning the women’s division of the Half Marathon was 31-year-old Amy Robillard fromMason,Ohio,inatimeof1:22:11.Thiswashersecondraceinthisarea—thefirstwastheHeartMini-MarathoninMarch.Amysplitshertimebetweentrainingandtakingcareofherfour-yearolddaughterandsoon-to-be14-montholdson,Jameson,whohadabonemarrowtransplantayearago.“IrunwhenIcan—ifIhavetimeathome,I’llrunfor45minutes,orifI’matthehospitalwithJamesonthenursestellmewhereIcanrunforafewminutes,saidRobillard.“Thecourseitselfwaschallenging,buttherewasgreatcrowdsupportandyoudefinitelygetanadrenalinerushwhentheycheeryouon.”Secondwas29-year-oldRachelBeafromKenwood,who’snowrunthehalfthreetimesandthefulltwice,in1:22:48.ThirdwasEricaSchramm,33,fromLasVegas,Nevada,whoranherfirstPigin1:25:56.

TheFlyingPigMarathonWeekendpoweredbyP&GkickedoffSaturdaymorningwith recordregistration for the Toyota 10K and Tri State Running Company 5K, and some familiar facesreturningtothisyear’scompetition.

The 2011 Flying Pig weekend began with 2,442 registered for the Toyota 10K. The winner,DerrickButlerfromCincinnati,finishedinatimeof32:46.SecondplacewasDonnieWarnerin32:52andthirdwasChadLutzinatimeof34:53.

In the women’s division, the winner was Heather Backer from Crestview Hills, Kentucky in39:18.SecondwasChristineTiemanandthirdwasAmyCarwile.

In the Tri StateRunningCompany 5K,which had a field of 3,616, last year’s 2010Marathonwinner,BrianList,wonthe5Kinatimeof16:04.Inthewomen’sdivision,thewinnerwasBeckyClarkofSaylerParkin18:23.The2005winneroftheFlyingPigMarathon,AlisonDelgado,cameinthirdplaceintheFlyingPig5K.

Alison,whowonthePigasAlisonBedingfield,enteredthe5Kaftersixmonthsofrehabilitationaftershewashitbyacarwhilecycling.Thestoryofherrecovery,withthehelpofherhusband,Tim,hasbecomenationally-known,with featuresonNBC’s “Today” showandothernationaloutlets.AlisonandTimwerethehonorarystartersforSunday’sFlyingPigMarathon.
