As I reflect on 2016 and all of the accomplishments at Family Gateway, I am thankful. Thankful for the continued support we received from our many good friends in the Dallas community; thankful for the volunteers who dedicated their time and talents to make a difference for our families; thankful for our incredible staff who demonstrate their talent, compassion and commitment to our mission every day. Most importantly, I am thankful for the opportunity to serve our children and families over the past year. Their smiles, their gratitude, and their resilience in the midst of trauma were inspirational and truly remarkable to witness. While great strides were made in 2016, there is still much work to be done in our efforts to support children and families affected by homelessness in our community. Together we must continue this important work. Every child needs a safe place to call home.

Anne Johnson

LETTER FROM OUR CHAIRMAN

LETTER FROM OUR CEOI was proud to take the helm at Family Gateway in July 2016 and remain very honored and humbled to serve this important mission. Family Gateway plays a unique role in our community for children and families affected by homelessness. While most shelters serve individuals, Family Gateway supports families of all kinds, most of whom have literally nowhere else to go. We know that children who have experienced homelessness are traumatized and need additional support to learn and grow, and so we take special care to bring normalcy and consistency to their daily lives. While many days are difficult as we find ways to support these vulnerable families through a time of despair and loss, we are frequently inspired and moved by the grace, perseverance, joy and hope we are fortunate to witness. Much has changed in the way that Family Gateway operates; we have geared up to play a more significant role in our community and to expand our services so that we may bring stability to even more families as we move ahead into our bright future.

SUPPORTIVE HOUSING

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

We have a 30 room emergency shelter for families with children. Meal service and basic necessities are provided with mental health, medical and dental services provided through partners.

SHELTER

CASE MANAGEMENT

CHILDREN’S SERVICES

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION PROGRAM

ADULT SERVICES

A case manager assesses each family’s strengths, weaknesses, and barriers to success and helps create a Housing Plan and a well-rounded Family Case Plan with goals and strategies to achieve them. Case managers also connect our families to community resources as needed.

Afterschool and summer programming is offered for children in our care and includes homework assistance and recreational and enrichment activities.

Children ages 6 weeks to 5 years are assessed by our Early Education Children’s Case Manager to determine an individualized educational case plan. In addition, we work with parents to help them understand the value of education, how to support their children’s progress, and how to help their children stay in school.

These are offered directly or through partners and include work readiness, life skills, education support, financial literacy, parenting education, and self-care.

We offer supportive housing through our Project Based Voucher and Permanent Supportive Housing programs at apartment complexes throughout the community. Our case managers provide ongoing supportive services to increase the likelihood of these families remaining stably housed.

The 2016 Gateway to Opportunity Luncheon presented by MetroPCS was Tuesday, September 27 at the Omni Dallas Hotel. Jenna Bush Hager was the keynote speaker and reminded nearly 550 attendees that,

“life is precious and it is a privilege as much

as a responsibility to share yourself with

someone in need.”

3RD ANNUAL GATEWAY TO OPPORTUNITY

LUNCHEON

GATEWAY AT HUTCHINSThanks to Matthews Southwest, Family Gateway is proud to be the nonprofit partner of 336 new units of affordable housing in the Inland Port of Dallas - Hutchins, TX. We held a groundbreaking ceremony on October 12 to celebrate this new partnership. Jack Mathews, President of Matthews Southwest, State Representative Helen Giddings, City of Hutchins Mayor Mario Vasquez, and Family Gateway Board Member Doug Ness made remarks at the event.

Record-breaking Net Revenue: $547,327

The success of our guests and families wouldn’t be possible without support from our community volunteers. From preparing rooms for new families moving into shelter, to cooking and serving meals to our guests, to tutoring kids in our afterschool program, to organizing our Donation Closet, we are thankful for the passion and dedication of our volunteers.

VOLUNTEERS

In 2016, 2,102 volunteers

donated 6,634 hours, saving us approximately

$166,845.

BOO BASH

Boo Bash is a Halloween carnival that provides the children in our shelter and housing programs the opportunity to “trick-or-treat” in a safe and fun environment, giving them a chance to just be kids! Thank you to Goodway Group, Kids Helping Kids, the National Charity League, Young Men’s Service League, Family Gateway Board members, and Zion Lutheran Church for making Boo Bash 2016 a success for our families.

HOLIDAY PROGRAMThanks to the generous support of our holiday store and adopt-a-family donors and volunteers, all of our families who needed support enjoyed a bright holiday season. Families received new toys and gift cards to purchase whatever was needed for the holidays.

After shopping in the holiday store, one mother wrote:

“As the New Year brings many blessings and some frustrations, I have hope. Knowing that so many cared enough to give their time to help all of us is very encouraging. There is no need to ever complain. Time is more valuable than money, and there aren’t enough words to express our gratitude. Thank you for everything you have given to us.”

Board members and their families volunteered in the holiday store.
