END OF SEASON NOTES

STARTING STRONG: Giants starters finished the regular season with the fifth-best starting staff ERA in the Majors at 3.71...only the Cubs (2.96), Nationals (3.60), Mets (3.61) and Blue Jays (3.64) had better ERAs than the Giants' starting staff.

IN THE BULLPEN: Giants relievers combined for a 3.54 ERA (188er, 478.0ip), good for fifth in the National League...the team went 43-for-73 in save opportunities and led the Majors with 30 blown saves, the most in franchise history.

LATE LOSSES: San Francisco lost a franchise-record nine games in 2016 in which it led entering the ninth inning, and five of those losses came in the season's final month: Sept. 4 at CHC, Sept. 7 at COL, Sept. 13 vs. SD, Sept. 17 vs. STL and Sept. 19 at LAD...the Giants had a MLB-high nine blown saves in Sept.

TOO MANY BLOWN LEADS: The Giants had six losses this season after leading by four-or-more runs, tied with the Rockies for the most such losses in the Majors...SF had just five such losses in their prior two seasons combined (STATS, Inc.).

COULDN'T COME BACK AFTER 8: The Giants were 0-62 when trailing after 8.0 innings, the worst record in SF-era history (since 1958)...there had been just one other time since 1958 that the Giants had zero wins when trailing after 8.0 full innings - 1960 (0-61) (STATS, Inc.).

FLASHING THE LEATHER: SF finished the regular season as the best defensive team in the Majors in terms of fielding pct. (.988)...SF committed the fewest errors of any team (72)...according to FanGraphs, the Giants ranked third in the Majors this season with 50 defensive runs saved (Cubs, 81 and Astros, 51).

ERRORLESS STREAK: SF went 17-straight games without committing an error from Aug. 15 to Sept. 2...this was the longest streak in franchise history and set the longest streak in NL history.

BEST AT THE BREAK: San Francisco finished the first half of the season with the best overall winning percentage in the Majors at .633 (57-33)...this marked just the second time in SF-era history (since 1958) that the team entered the break with the best overall record (also: 1993, 59-30, .663).

CLOSE CALLS: The Giants played 55 games that were decided by one run, the second-most such games of any ML team (Seattle, 60)...SF went 20-10 in one run games in the first half, but then 8-17 in one-run decisions in the second half.

NO NEED FOR THE LONG BALL: It was a year for the home run across baseball, as Major League teams combined to hit the second-most homers in modern history (5,610)...however, the Giants were able to make the postseason while hitting the third-fewest homers in the Majors (130).

LONG BALL PART II: San Francisco was the only team to not feature at least one player with at least 20 home runs this year...IF Brandon Belt paced the club with just 17 homers...the Giants are the first team to qualify for the postseason without featuring a 20-home run hitter since the 2014 Royals...the last Giants team that made the playoffs without a 20-HR hitter was in 1923, when Irish Meusel paced the New York Giants' run to the NL pennant by hitting 19 home runs (Elias).

LOGGING INNINGS: LHP Madison Bumgarner (226.2ip, 2nd), RHP Johnny Cueto (219.2ip, 3rd) and RHP Jeff Samardzija (203.1ip, 5th) all ranked within the top five of innings pitched in the NL in 2016...Bumgarner threw the most pitches of any pitcher in 2016 (including postseason) with 3,791 pitches thrown.

ALL-STARS: LHP Madison Bumgarner (fourth selection), RHP Johnny Cueto (second selection), C Buster Posey (fourth selection) and IF Brandon Belt (first selection) were chosen to represent the Giants at this year's All-Star Game in San Diego...it marked the fifth time in the last six seasons San Francisco had at least four players selected to the National League All-Star team.

MID-SEASON TRADES: The Giants made three mid-season trades that helped fill holes in the starting rotation (Matt Moore acquired from Tampa Bay), bullpen (Will Smith acquired from Milwaukee) and third base (Eduardo Nunez acquired from Minnesota).

2016 POSTSEASON

•InGame4of theDivisionSeries againstChicago-NL,Moore allowed two runs and struck out 10 in eight innings of work, but his bullpen ruined his masterpiece by blowing a three-run lead in the ninth inning eliminating the Giants from the postseason...Moore became the fifth pitcher in Major League history to allow two-or-fewer hits and strikeout at least 10 batters in a game in which his team faced postseason elimination...the others to do that were Baltimore's Mike Mussina (1997 vs. Cleveland), Florida's Josh Beckett (2003 vs. Cubs), Detroit's Justin Verlander (2013 vs. Oakland) and the Mets' Noah Syndergaard (2016 vs. San Francisco)...the only pitchers that were rewarded with a victory for their performance were Beckett and Verlander (Elias).

•InGame4oftheDivisionSeriesagainsttheCubs,Moore'sgo-ahead hit was the first by a Giants pitcher in postsea-son since Hal Schumacher got one in the 1933 WS vs General Crowder.

•Moore's 10-strikeout gamewas the 10th double-digitstrikeout game in Giants postseason history.
