Foreword

Dear media representative,

Welcome to the fourth edition of the Men’s EHF Cup Finals; we are now just moments away from the matches that will determine the new champion of the 2015/16 Men’s EHF Cup. It has been a very interesting journey for a competition that continues to grow and gain momentum since undergoing a facelift in 2013.

In September 2015 the first teams embarked on a journey to Nantes in the first qualification round. Following the end of Qualification Round 2 in October, 32 teams moved into the third and final qualification stage; this was where every match mattered and the race was on to become one of the last sixteen teams standing in order to play the six-round group phase that commenced in February.

Over the course of season 60 teams have now been whittled down to four as the three quarter-final pairings made the last cut. And I congratulate each and every team which took part in this “odyssey” for their valiant athletic efforts. For the remaining teams, one more challenge awaits – the EHF Cup Finals.

On behalf of the European Handball Federation, I welcome the delegations of Fraikin BM Granollers, Chambery Savoie Handball, Frisch Auf Göppingen and HBC Nantes where in front of a 4,500 strong capacity crowd in the Salle Sportive Metropolitaine de la Trocardiere, a new champion will be crowned.

After Rhein-Neckar Löwen took the first trophy in 2013, Szeged in 2014 and Füchse Berlin last year we are excited to see the new champions to be crowned in this beautiful arena. The reigning trophy holders Füchse have been out of the picture since the third qualification round as they were left behind by Chambery.

It is a sort of homecoming for this competition after Nantes hosted the premiere edition of the EHF Cup Finals in 2013. It was such a success that there was no hesitation on the part of the European Handball Federation to give a positive answer to the application this club handed in with a great deal of enthusiasm. Also for me personally it is a great pleasure to come to the city where I was involved with handball many a time as a player and later as a referee. It is amazing to see how handball has developed here.

We pride ourselves on our positive and cooperative relationship with the press and media and I am sure this will continue and develop in the future. Should you require any information, help or assistance during the course of the season, your first point of contact is the EHF Media and Communications Department based in our office in Vienna. They will be more than happy to assist you with any questions you might have.

We look forward to working with you in the upcoming season!

EHF CupThe new Men’s EHF Cup was formed at the beginning of the 2012/13 season following the merging of the Men’s EHF Cup and the Men’s Cup Winners’ Cup. The competition forms the second tier of competition after the VELUX EHF Champions League and above the Men’s Challenge Cup. The new competition also brought with it a new format, with three qualification rounds, a group phase, quarter-finals and a final tournament – the EHF Cup Finals.

EHF Cup Finals in NantesThe event will be held in the Salle Sportive Metropolitaine de la Trocardiere in Nantes, with the capacity of up to 4,500 spectators, over two days with semi-finals to be played on Saturday, 14 May, the match for third/fourth place and the final on Sunday, 15 May. More than 100 volunteers, 150 media representatives, 9,000 spectators, and up to 80 players will take part in the two-day tournament.

New trophyWith ten days to go to the 2016 EHF Cup Finals the new trophy was unveiled by HBC Nantes, the tournament’s organisers.

It has been designed by a local artist, Jean Noël Scerri. The specialist in sculpturing wood and steel also designed the first trophy for the Men’s EHF Cup Finals in 2013.

“It was an honour to design and make the first trophy for the Men’s EHF Cup Finals. My main inspiration this year was to start by using my previous work in 2013 and to evolve it into something more modern. It was a very exciting challenge,” he said.

“The 2016 trophy maintains the tradition of the previous design, by respecting the golden ratio but with a much more modern design. The idea of an arm with a ball is being used again but this year I wanted to show both the attack move and the power of the shot. If you look very carefully you can see the ball at the top of a triangle. Using very simple forms, I wanted to show the idea of victory,” Scerri added.

The 2016 trophy is 63 cm tall and weighs 5 kilograms. It has been made of steel with a wooden stand, which has been designed with help of Tristan Jaoul, a member of the Racine Carbone group. It required 20 hours of searching and working on draws and preparation and almost 40 hours of manufacturing.

Fraikin BM Granollers vs HBC Nantes

Salle Sportive Metropolitaine de la Trocardiere, NantesSaturday 14 May, 14:45 hrs. local time

LIVE ON EHFTV.COM

EHF Cup Finals hosts HBC Nantes hope to win the tournament on home ground this weekend, but qualifying for the finals via a semi-final against Fraikin BM. Granollers will not be easy.

For the second time in four years, HBC Nantes is hosting the EHF Cup Finals tournament. Though they were defeated 24:26 by Rhein-Neckar Löwen in the semi-final in 2013, this time they are well prepared to reach for gold.

“We want to erase the disappointment from 2013. The team has grown up, we are more mature and more used to handling such big occasions,” team captain Rock Feliho said after the semi-final draw was announced.

But is Fraikin BM. Granollers the best draw they could have hoped for?

Even though the Spanish side were not the biggest profiles in the competition’s starting line-up in September, they earned their ticket to the finals the hard way, which would seem to make them all the more dangerous.

Along the way, they recorded several impressive wins, including clear victories against two Danish teams: Aalborg Handball and Bjerringbro-Silkeborg, the latter of which they defeated in the quarter-final stage to earn their place in Nantes.

Even though Granollers only made it to the final weekend due to superior away-goal performance, Nantes coach Thierry Anti is well aware of the quality of the opponent:

“Just like in football, just like in basketball, Spanish handball teams like to actually play handball. These are very technical players, tactically intelligent, which can adapt to the defence they’ve got in front of them. The key is to be able to create problems they might not have anticipated.”

Granollers play a somewhat unusual game, considering their top three scorers in the EHF Cup are either line players or wingers, indicating how much the team love to run and make fast breaks.

This recipe has worked very well, from qualifying for the group phase against Norwegian side OIF Arendal to arriving in Nantes to reclaim a trophy Granollers has not won in twenty years. The Spanish side won the EHF Cup trophy two seasons in a row, in 1995 and 1996, before disappearing under the radar. Granollers resurfaced on an international level in 2010, when they were defeated in the Cup Winners’ Cup Final by VfL Gummersbach.

HBC Nantes might not have the same rich European history, but they are ready to get their hands on the trophy.

After defeating Croatian side RK Nexe away in the qualification rounds early in the competition, the French team finished first in what was seen as the hardest group of the group phase. Conceding only one defeat to Frisch Auf Göppingen and beating Team Tvis Holstebro twice, Nantes grabbed a direct ticket to the final weekend, which will take place in the brand new La Trocardière Arena.

Nantes are in a good position ahead of the home finals, with stars like top scorer Valero Rivera Folch and key back court player Nicolas Claire in excellent form.

They also added two new players, Uros Bundalo and Sime Ivic, to the team in January, which has made things even more comfortable for them.

The French side are currently second in the domestic league, and aim to play the VELUX EHF Champions League next season – but before that, they would very much to win ‘their’ finals weekend.

Granollers qualified to the quarterfinals in a heart attack game against Aalborg in the last round of the group phase. The Catalan team only needed to win or draw to be in the next round, but the Denmark’s side was very near to ruin the dream of Granollers. Palau d’Esports de Granollers, the venue of the team, had the best attendance of the season to help its team to pass the round. Ferran Solé scored the goal that draw the game (24:24) and the Catalans reached the EHF Cup quarter-finals after 11 years.

The team of Carlos Viver began the group phase with a lost against Dinamo Bucuresti at home. They won the first two points in Denmark on court of Aalborg but they lost again in Germany – against Magdeburg. But the team won the next two important games, against Magdeburg at home - in the best match of the team in this group phase - and they won in Romania against Dinamo Bucuresti which propelled them to the top of the group. After a draw in the last game they finished the group phase in the second position with 7 points, 1 below Magdeburg, the first one. At the beginning of the season, the left back Juan del Arco - maybe the best player of the team - transferred to El Jaish (Qatar). It was an important loss for Granollers who tried to fill the void with the Brazilian, Henrique Texeira. In October, the right back, Jose Guilherme Toledo, left the team to sign for Wisla Plock to play EHF Champions League. Alex Marquez came from FC Barcelona and the last player who joined Granollers is another Brazilian: Fernando Pacheco. This year is very special for Salva Puig who announced his retirement at the end of the season. Puig played most of his career in Granollers in three different stages (1996-2003, 2008-2011 and currently), Göppingen (2003-04), FC Barcelona (2004-07), BM. Valladolid (2007-08) and Toulouse (2011-13).

In the most thrilling of the three quarter-final pairings Granollers eliminated Bjerringbro-Silkeborg only on the away goal rule as both teams won their home matches by six goals.

EHF Cup Finals without the host club wouldn’t have had the same taste and, luckily, HBC Nantes managed to snatch a ticket for the finals right after the group phase, by finishing first of their group.

The story was not already written though, as the draw put three contenders to the trophy in the same group. Nantes was about to meet Frish Auf! Göppingen and Team Tvis Holstebro as well as newcomers OCI-Lions, after beating RK Nexe without fear in qualification round three.

If the first clash with the German club ended in a narrow defeat, the rest of the tests was a success, as Nantes rounded up the first stage with five victories, including some impressive ones at home against Göppingen and Holstebro.

Nantes’s campaign has been a success so far, both on and off the court. The team, who reached the EHF Cup final in 2013, finished second best defence and third best attack of all the group phase teams, even if key players like Nicolas Claire, Rock Feliho, Matias Schulz or Rodrigo Salinas were all injured at some point or another.

In the meantime, in the stands, two of the three best attendances were recorded at La Trocardiere. The reception of Göppingen, a key moment of the group phase, 4,421 spectators filled the arena, while more than 4,000 were also present two weeks later, for the send-off of OCI-Lions. A good sign that the EHF Cup Finals will be a popular event after the already rousing success of the event, which took place three seasons ago at the old Palais des Sports de Beaulieu.

Chambery Savoie Handball vs Frisch Auf Göppingen

Salle Sportive Metropolitaine de la Trocardiere, NantesSaturday 14 May, 17:30 hrs. local time

LIVE ON EHFTV.COM

Two teams used to European battles will face each other in the second semi-final of the EHF Cup in Nantes on Saturday.

In fact, you might even call Chambery Savoie Handball and Frisch Auf Göppingen ‘regulars’ at this level of international competition.

The French side played the EHF Champions League five seasons in a row, between 2008 and 2013, and are now trying to match their past glories in the EHF Cup.

Göppingen have won the EHF Cup twice, in 2011 and 2012, finished as runners-up in 2006 and made it to the final weekend in Nantes back in 2013.

Men’s EHF Cup Finals, Semi-finalChambery Savoie Handball (FRA) vs Frisch Auf Göppingen (GER)Saturday 14 May, 17:30 local time live on ehfTV

Considering both teams’ history, it is difficult to pick a favourite ahead of Saturday’s match. Even the coaches think it will be a 50/50 affair, as Chambery assistant coach Danilo Brestovac explains:

“This is a game between two teams which are I think are almost equal. We have had a decent run since the beginning of the competition, but so have Göppingen.

“They’ve been able to beat Nantes and Holstebro this season, and qualifying for the finals against Magdeburg was not a certainty. I guess fate will pick the team which can handle the pressure best.”

In terms of experience, both teams are also level. Four players from the German side were on court four years ago in the EHF

Cup Finals, and seven took part in Chambery’s last VELUX EHF Champions League campaign.

The final ingredient in this recipe for a thrilling 60 minutes is that both teams are extremely hungry for European success.

Chambery has never lifted a continental trophy, and the last they won on French ground was three years ago.

“This is a unique chance for two teams that are not that used to winning trophies to get their hands on one,” says Chambery’s Croatian right wing Jerko Matulic.

“It adds more pressure for sure, but there are experienced players on both sides and we have proven this season that we were able to handle it.”

They truly have. Chambery began their campaign by beating HC Sporta Hlohovec in first round of qualification matches before defeating title holders Füchse Berlin to qualify for the group phase.

With four wins and two draws the group phase seemed like a walk in the park, but the quarter-finals were not. It was only in the last fifteen minutes of the return leg that Chambery secured their place at the final weekend, when they defeated fellow countrymen Saint-Raphael Var Handball.

Göppingen also had to beat a team from their own nation in the quarter-finals, and their victims were SC Magdeburg.

With even the most detailed statistics so closely aligned it is clear that it will be a close call as to who proceeds to the final on Sunday.

Chambery are the only team to have finished the group phase undefeated. If you could argue their opponents were not the toughest you could find, they still managed to remain serious until the end, getting their quarter finals ticket two games before the end of the phase.

After beating title holders Füchse Berlin in the third qualification round, Chambery faced Ystad in their first group game and deserved a large home win. For the second game the French struggled against Bucuresti, coming back from Romania with a lucky draw. In fact, the Romanians were the only team against which Chambery did not win, both games ended in a draw. But that did not really matter since both Helvetia Anaitasuna and Ystad could not snatch a point against them. Timothey N’Guessan was the best scorer of the team, with 37 goals, while Melvyn Richardson, at only 19, is one of the best surprises of the competition so far. Able to play both on the centre back and the right back position, Jackson’s son proved to be one of the key asset in his team, and his talent will surely be needed in the national clash against Saint Raphaël.

In an exciting all-French affair they lost the first leg by five goals but in the dying minutes of the return leg managed to climb back and clinched their ticket to the final tournament.

After a three year absence from European Cup competitions, the 2011 and 2012 winner of the “old” EHF Cup qualified again for an international competition. The qualification stage with matches against Polish side Gornik Zabrze was anything but a high hurdle for Frisch Auf Göppingen, as they won both duels by an overall goal difference of +19. At that stage, Göppingen had hoped for hosting the EHF Cup Finals, but failed with their bid - against their group phase opponent HBC Nantes.

After a surprising opening defeat at Holstebro, Göppingen were awake and mainly unbeatable on home ground. Winning all three matches at EWS-Arena including the close 27:26 against later-on group winners Nantes, the team of Swedish born head coach Magnus Andersson paved the way to the quarter-finals. After winning the direct encounter against Holstebro by a clear 36:23 the gate was open, but Göppingen needed to wait until the away win at OCI Lions in the final round until the berth for the next stage was clinched.

Not only thanks to their 40:20 against the Dutch champions on home ground - the clearest win in all group matches, Göppingen finally had the best attack of all 16 teams (198 goals) and the best goal difference (+37) of all contenders. But funny enough not their internationally experienced top stars such as German World Champion Michael Kraus or Serbian EURO 2012 silver medallist Zarko Sesum were their top scorers in the EHF Cup so far, but the young guns Marcel Schiller (42) and Andreas Berg (36), both left wings and counter attack experts.

On domestic ground, the chance to make it again to the European Cup competitions is still there, as Frisch Auf currently are ranked seventh in the Bundesliga, in the German Cup they failed in the quarter-finals, as they were defeated by their upcoming EHF Cup opponent Magdeburg 29:25 in the quarter-finals. However, they paid it back to their domestic rivals in the EHF Cup Quarter-finals as they reached Nantes at Magdeburg’s expense.

Important regulationsExtra-time and penalty throws

All matches of the Men’s EHF Cup Finals shall be played in 2 x 30 minutes. If a semi-final match or the final ends in a draw, there will be a five minutes break followed by one extra time of 2 x 5 minutes, there will be a one minute half-time break at half-time for the changeover of teams. If the extra-time ends in a draw, the match will be decided by penalty throws.

If the placement match 3/4 ends in a draw, there shall be no extra time, the match will be decided directly by penalty throws.

If penalty throws are needed to decide the match, the procedure is as follows:

• At the Technical Meeting the teams will be informed at which goal the penalty throws will be taken. The team taking the first penalty throw shall be determined by the referees by drawing lots. The team winning the draw may choose whether it wishes to throw first or last.

• Prior to the penalty throws, each team shall name five players eligible to play at the end of the match by handing the referees a list of numbers. These players shall then take one throw each, alternating with their opponents. Each team is free to determine the sequence in which throwers will take their throws.

• The goalkeepers may be freely selected from the match report and exchanged in accordance with the Rules of the Game. Goalkeepers may take throws and throwers may perform as goalkeepers.

• If the scores are equal after the first round of penalty throws, it shall be continued until a decision is reached. In the second round, the other team shall start. Again five players shall be named who are eligible to play (the players named before may be named once again).

• In the second round, a decision is reached when a goal difference arises after both teams have taken one throw each.

• Eligible players are players entered in the match report that have not been disqualified or suspended at the time of the final whistle.

• Serious infractions committed during penalty throws shall be sanctioned by disqualification. If a thrower is disqualified or suffers an injury, an eligible substitute player shall be additionally named.

• While the throws are being taken, only the player taking the throw, the current goalkeeper and the referees may enter the respective half of the playing court.

• If the number of eligible players falls below five, players may be named to take a second throw in the same round.
