Our way of life

Grounded in the Midwest, we are an employee-owned, financial institution driven whole-heartedly by the success of our communities.

We believe a community bank has the ability to play a direct role in the strength and vitality of a community. It is a responsibility we don’t take lightly and a philosophy illustrated by our brand promise.

Right here. Right for you.

We aspire each day to be advisors to our customers, listening to the unique story they each tell and guiding them through the financial journey; continually assessing the route to best get them to their final destination.

LETTER TO OUR

communities

We are proud to continue to serve you, and we thank you for your continued trust in us as a core pillar in your community. In 2016, we continued our proud history of serving our communities in North Dakota and Montana. Those of us who have lived in and are from our region, know there are good economic times, and there are times that are more challenging. In the over 100 years we have served our communities, we have seen our share of both. 2016 was a year many of us will remember as more challenging, driven by a regional economy impacted by both low energy and agricultural commodity prices. Our role, as a community financial institution, is to be here for our employees, customers, and communities during these times. We are proud to have this role, and remained committed to your success.

Our stewardship remains strong. In 2016, we contributed over $750,000 dollars to causes within our communities. We believe we have a duty to be stewards in our communities, and have invested with a special focus on projects that benefit and help develop our youth. This was highlighted by significant pledges committed to the University of Mary, the Bismarck Zoo, and the Sauber Sports Complex in Stanley, ND.

We continue to invest in and expand our service offerings to serve you better. In 2016, we launched new web and mobile offerings to improve your experience. We added brokerage services to continue expanding our wealth management offerings, and we increased our insurance capacity by adding production staff in key markets. We also prepared to launch a completely new branch format, which we believe will greatly enhance your customer experience. We will unveil this format in two new branches and one renovated branch in 2017. This is part of a multi-year effort to upgrade our branches and branch experience.

To build on our brand statement, “Right Here, Right for You”, and set the direction of our company moving forward, we updated our American Strategy in 2016, and will be communicating this to all of our employees early this year. Our strategy includes specific business objectives we plan to achieve in the next eight years. It also introduces how we plan to meet those objectives. Core to this strategy is our Aspiration, which defines who we are and how we plan to work with each other, our customers, and our communities.

The American Aspiration

To be a company of advisors who directly contribute to the financial stability of every

community to which we belong.

We achieve this by living three principles:

Give and earn trust to create a positive culture of

accountability.

Learn, teach and mentor in order to solve customer

challenges locally.

Collaborate and innovate for the benefit of our company,

customers, and community.

To live our Aspiration will require much more than communicating these words to our staff, and we are launching several initiatives in 2017 to begin bringing it to life. In order to truly be advisors, we must have the most capable staff who has unsurpassed knowledge of their products, listens intently to customer needs, engages with those customers, makes confident recommendations, and always seeks to “wow”. This will take dedicated effort across our organization, and starting in 2017, we will begin training programs focused on improving advisory skills in our team members.

We expect 2017 will be both a challenging and rewarding year. We continue to believe in the resilience and ingenuity of our fellow North Dakota and Montana citizens, and we trust in our collective ability to face our challenges while diligently pursuing opportunities.

We thank you for making our communities a great place to work and live. We look forward to seeing you and working with you in 2017.

David Ehlis President & CEO, American Bancor, Inc.

The American story begins with small, independent banks throughout the Midwest, tracing back to 1909. It wasn’t until a merge between American State Bank and Bank Center First in 2009, that American Bank Center and its entities were formed.

Beyond business, the most important investments we make are investments back into the communities in which we live and serve. Through community action, outreach and development, we have the opportunity to help shape our neighborhoods for the better.

Simply, we recognize being an active corporate citizen is the first step. Looking to host a community-wide event in Bismarck-Mandan, American organized the Summer Splash Bash, covering everyone’s admission to Raging Rivers Waterpark. The event was the first-of-it’s-kind within the community and brought together over 2,000 attendees for a fun evening in the sun.

Further West, we partnered with First On First, a weekly summer street festival in Dickisnon. American sponsored the KidZone, providing families a destination of their own with a bounce house and various games.

We further extend our commitment through targeted community development. American recently defined two areas of focus for our corporate giving program; Youth Development and Economic Stability. It is not by coincidence the two share a fundamental connection. We believe by committing to the success of our youth while, at the same time, providing assistance to low-to-moderate income initiatives, we have the potential to achieve thriving and self-sustaining communities.

With the new direction in mind, American pledged $100,000 to the Family Wellness Center in Mandan. A partnership between Sanford Health and the Missouri Valley Family YMCA, the new facility provides healthy living and youth development programs to the entire community. Family Wellness is committed to offering financial assistance to families who otherwise could not afford the services.

COMMITMENT TO OUR

We saw additional opportunity to support our youth in the West region through the Dickinson Catholic Schools Capital Campaign. American pledged $750,000 with $500,000 designated to the Building Fund, and the remaining amount going to the Foundation Endowment.

We were proud to be part of Trinity High School’s story that started with a devastating fire, continuing through the intense reconstruction of the West wing and later, the exciting reopening of a new home for over 200 High School and Junior High students. The school boasts 72,000 square feet of new space, including a state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center, a commons area for students to relax between classes, and a beautiful chapel.

Trinity’s JV Girls Volleyball team gets a tour of the new cafeteria a few months prior to project completion.

COMMITMENT TO OUR

customers

As advisors to our customers, our first priority is to simply listen. It is the unique story and perspective of each customer that provides us the direction we need to effectively help them succeed.

From there, we continually strive to provide customers with exemplary products and unparalleled service.

Innovation is key in providing customers the convenience they expect. Our newly-designed, responsive website works seamlessly between devices, instantly adapting to fit a laptop, tablet or smart phone. The site also provides customers with additional conveniences including online loan applications.

It all started with a 12 year-old boy and a $20 lawn mower he purchased at a garage sale. Today, Tyler Sanford has grown his business into a successful, full-service lawn care company.

A story of generationsBruce and Karen Lewallen, 4th generation farmers from Bisbee, ND, look to hand down the operation to their daughter and son-in-law, Vanessa and Chad Weber. The farm originated in the late 1800’s with Bruce’s Great-Grandparents through the Homestead Act. At the time, the farmstead occupied two quarters of land.

Today, Bruce and Chad farm roughly 6,000 acres.

The way in which customers conduct business, make daily purchases and tend to their personal finances changes rapidly. We continue to fine-tune our eBanking products, with a keen focus on our Mobile Banking App. Upgraded in 2016, our latest app is capable of Mobile Check Deposits, and Person-to-Person Payments.

Technology aside, American continues to hold a brick and mortar presence in the communities we serve. Just a hop, skip, and a jump away, our knowledgable advisors are able to personally assist you with your banking, insurance and wealth management needs.

A non-profit organization in Southwest North Dakota, ABLE, Inc. serves and supports nearly 100 individuals in their homes, work and communities. Their clients live in Intermediate Care Facilities, often leased apartment buildings or homes not equipped or designed for the client’s needs. In an effort to build a more functional and warm environment for clients, American Bank Center worked with ABLE to finance a new construction project.
