A chamber of commerce is a private business organization and serves as a vehicle through which the business and professional community are organized to work together to define and solve community and economic development issues as well as network and support each other. In 2014 the Chamber received a 4-Star Accreditation from the US Chamber of Commerce. This status puts our Chamber in the top 3% of chambers in the country and we’re very proud of our organization and its values.
The Chamber is loyal to all its members. They represent large and small businesses; retail, service, home-based, manufacturing, public service, education and organizations. As the community’s search engine, tourists, residents and other businesses look first to the Chamber of Commerce for everything from local maps to commercial development.

We’re proud of how the Chamber’s mission and community partnership enhance opportunities for business and quality of life for everyone. And we’re proud of the community in which we live, do business and serve. We know you’ll love Delaware. Get to know us and get to know the Chamber.

OUR VISION. The Delaware Area Chamber of Commerce shall be the region’s business leader and business community voice.
OUR MISSION. The Chamber serves as the visionary leader for programs and services benefiting our members by promoting and advocating a favorable business climate, quality of life and orderly growth and development of the Delaware area community.
4
COMMUNIT Y CHARACTER
The City of Delaware is an energetic one whose downtown benefits from the alignment of a dedicated set of very
involved citizens with municipal officials with policies and a posture favorable to the historic district. Delaware also had the distinguished honor of being named by Ohio Magazine as one of Ohio’s best hometowns. Delaware appreci-ates its 200-plus years of history, but also boasts a “funky” side, evidenced by an eclectic mix of retail shopping and dining outlets and cultural offerings that range from music and art to farm-ers’ markets.
Downtown is a defining element because it is a fairly intact historic business dis-trict, parts of which have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Contempo-rary use of historic buildings makes the down-town an attractive place to work, shop and visit. Restored 19th century commercial prop-erties are adapted for today’s businesses. The tree-lined sidewalks and activities draw people downtown and give Delaware a feeling of hav-ing a center. Maintaining the historic nature of downtown and adjacent neighborhoods is a priority for the city to help maintain the historic integrity of the district.
Stately historic buildings, their brick faces in warm shades of red, present a scene inviting
everyone to explore storefronts facing wide sidewalks and tree-lined streets. These are some of the tangible aspects of Delaware’s community character. Intangibles include the comfortable atmosphere of a one-of-a-kind gathering place. Don’t even think about bring-ing a laptop. Go there for the music and a bever-age with friends. The place just fits like a favorite old sweater, and everyone knows the owner. Consider an intangible like the spirit that builds a mosaic on the back outside wall of a brand new IPA brewery and restaurant. Admirers tell
one another, “You have to see it!” and the best time is when the afternoon sun ricochets off the mirrors and brings the wall alive.
How does Delaware County have fun? How do people “play” together? Look at the big events in the community and find the Little Brown Jug harness race, the Delaware County Fair, the All-Horse Parade and Independence Day Concert by the Central Ohio Symphony.
These are home town events and activities where neighbor meets neighbor. The Main Street Delaware organization contributes to the city’s character by sponsoring events like the farmer’s market and the First Fridays that bring people downtown, contributing to this intangible of community character.
Delaware County’s Public Transpor-tation Agency, DATA Bus, travels the area on fixed routes connecting visitors, residents and employees to services, recreation, schools and businesses.
Other county priorities reflect its char-acter. Bikeways connect people, neighbor-hoods, services and businesses. Both Pow-ell and Delaware boast recreation centers/YMCA that promote a healthy community and helps keep recreation dollars in the com-munity. Location of small parks within walk-ing distance of most neighborhoods shows the area’s recognition of the need for places

to relax and play close to home with friends and neighbors.
The villages and townships in Delaware County add an extra dimension to its charac-ter as well. Recognized as one of America’s first forms of government, townships have generally been credited with being able to accomplish more with fewer tax dollars than any other form of government. Liberty Town-ship covers nearly 25 square miles in Delaware County, one of the fastest growing counties in the nation. The appeal of Liberty Township is its charming semi-rural location between the scenic Olentangy and Scioto Rivers with close proximity to our state’s capital, Port Colum-bus International Airport, the Ohio State Uni-versity, Columbus State Community College and several athletic teams (Blue Jackets, Crew, Clippers and Ohio Machine). Nearby amenities include several top-rated hospitals, two large shopping malls, several movie theaters and fine dining. We are also home to the Colum-bus Zoo, which was ranked the #1 zoo in the United States by USA Travel Guide.
One the east side of the county is the
Village of Sunbury. With a population of roughly 4500, the village is centered around a New England-esque traditional town square with the historic village hall located in the cen-ter of a village green. Sunbury is home to the Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial that commemo-rates every Ohio Soldier that has bravely given his or her life in service to the USA since 9/11. Sunbury was chosen to be the home of the Memorial due to the village’s proximity to Cen-terburg, OH (the geographical center of Ohio) and the village’s proximity to I-71 a major inter-state connecting Southwest Ohio / Cincinnati and Northeast Ohio / Cleveland.
And in the interest of cooperation and collaboration, Delaware City and County have consolidated 9-1-1 services into one center which receives emergency calls for police, fire, and EMS and sends appropriate responders. While one dispatcher is talking with and assist-ing the caller, a second dispatcher is immedi-ately sending help and providing updates to responders on their way.
Newcomers adjust quickly to the com-fortable lifestyle within the county. The fast
pace of business during the work day can be balanced by activities with a hometown feel. Downtown Delaware and Powell have some-thing for everyone. Make global deals during the day then “kick back” to enjoy The Little Brown Jug, or wander through the Farmer’s Market to sample local produce and products or attend the annual Taste of Powell that inte-grates one of the biggest social events of the season with samples of food from throughout the county. Enjoy a symphony concert on the lawn at Phillips Glen or find your hidden artist in classes at The Arts Castle. Enjoy wine-tast-ing at the Ross Art Museum to music or a brew in an establishment reminding us of the good parts of days gone by! The contrasts are excit-ing and a deep part of our culture and charac-ter in Delaware. You feel this is the right place and the right time.
The blend of community characteris-tics make Delaware a great place to work, to live, and to raise a family. The result is vibrant downtowns where business, university, resi-dents and arts create a synergy defining Del-aware County’s personality.
6
ARTS & CULTURE IN DELAWARE
Delaware is a study in contrasts. The communities appreciate their history, blending old and new by preserving
and rehabilitating historic buildings for reuse. Local culture means enjoying a performance of music, art or theater. Try sampling the agri-cultural heritage at The Delaware County Fair, home of The Little Brown Jug, the premier pacing classic for three-year-old harness rac-ing. That’s contrast!
Delaware culture is rich with the Cen-tral Ohio Symphony; dance, theater and art programs through Ohio Wesleyan University and arts education from The Arts Castle. Pop-ular traditions related to The Delaware County Fair, the All-Horse Parade and The Little Brown Jug, The Taste of Powell and the ever popular Christmas Parade in Sunbury say something about the roots of Delaware’s values and the desire to know your neighbor.
A community’s commitment to arts begins with its schools and Delaware City Schools, for example, has long supported the arts at an impressive level. The music program at Delaware Hayes High School features a marching band, full orchestra, jazz band and string chamber orchestra. Strings instruction begins in the fourth grade. Students showcase vocal talents in choirs, including a competition symphonic choir with 70 voices. Singers and
musicians perform around the city. They are especially in demand at holidays and with the Central Ohio Symphony.
Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU) is a small liberal arts university with a strong international presence. More than ten per-cent of its enrollment comes from outside the US and all students are encouraged to participate in at least one international experience during their tenure at OWU. The university is only steps from downtown, and this advantageous location offers cultural and educational opportunities for students, businesses and the community. For example, the Central Ohio Symphony uses the univer-sity’s Gray Chapel as its performance venue. Phillips Glen, site of countless OWU grad-uations, is the setting for the symphony’s annual Fourth of July concert, attended by
thousands of music lovers from the Central Ohio area.
OWU’s Richard M. Ross Art Museum, where admission is always free, provides exhi-bitions of distinctive quality and content from the nation’s most notable artists and displays portions of the university’s extensive private collection. In addition, an annual juried exhibit
spotlights work by senior fine arts majors and a biennial art show features university profes-sors who are also practicing studio artists.
University theater and dance produc-tions, from musicals to experimental theatre to Shakespeare, are part of the curriculum for students in these majors and are open to the public. The OWU music program features vocal and instrumental artists, ensembles ranging from the Park Avenue Jazz Ensemble to the Wind Ensemble and the OWU Cham-ber Orchestra, and vocal music performances by the Choral Art Society, Opera Theatre and other groups. An annual Performing Arts Series brings outstanding musicians and per-formance artists to campus for the enjoyment of the entire Delaware community.
The Delaware County Cultural Arts Cen-ter, housed in an 1854 mansion known as “The
Arts Castle,” provides anyone the opportunity to play and recharge from a busy life of work and organized recreation. The Arts Castle is a place to enjoy affordable programs, classes, workshops, performances, dance training and free public exhibitions with family, friends or alone. The Arts Castle draws a substantial number of visitors from outlying areas with special events and activities like the annual Castle Arts Affair, held in November. Programs are available for all ages, from “Jump Into Color” for two-year-olds to classes with no age limits in almost every other category.
The Central Ohio Symphony was founded in 1978. Its home is Ohio Wesleyan University’s Gray Chapel with its remarkable acoustics. As an unofficial cultural ambassa-dor for the city and county of Delaware, the Symphony also has performed in Ohio com-munities from Chillicothe to Put-In-Bay. The Symphony takes pride including economic development as one of its categories of con-tribution to the Delaware community. The Symphony contributes to a strong local econ-omy, drawing patrons and fans from near and far to Delaware. Its role might be described as a “bridge” between the community and the University. Patrons park, eat, shop and walk around campus and downtown Delaware establishments before and after concerts. Going on its third year anchored on Winter Street in its downtown office “Symphony Source,” the location provides greater access for the community with locality and extended office hours.
Did you know admission to the Richard M. Ross Art Museum is free?

Perkins Observatory, part of OWU’s Physics and Astronomy Department, is located south of the city, adjacent to the Meth-odist Theological School. Perkins is a research facility that has been in continuous use since its completion in 1931. It is open to the public with programs most Friday nights and special events such as the “Celebration of the Sun.”
With four locations, the Delaware County District Library offers convenience, technol-ogy and resources for patrons of all ages. The Orange Branch, at 7171 Gooding Boule-vard is the newest facility to open since the Powell branch opened in 1993. The main library is located on Winter Street with an additional branch in Ostrander. Visitors to
the Orange Branch find it welcoming and inviting, with special areas allocated for chil-dren and teens, four study rooms and a large reading room with floor-to-ceiling windows. The new facility has 32,600 square feet and is Silver LEEDS certified. The Orange library integrates environment, energy savings and engineering. Businesses, organizations and individuals enjoy the meeting rooms, build-ing-wide Wi-Fi, 38 Internet computers and a business center. The library also features areas to display civic, cultural, educational and recreational events or services. Users will find more than 105,000 books, DVD’s, audio books and periodicals.
The Little Brown Jug has developed
into the leading pacing classic for three-year-old horses since its inception in 1937. “The Jug” is the anchor in the Triple Crown of Pacing. Another unique cultural event held the week before The Delaware County Fair is the All-Horse Parade. The parade includes 500 horses, ponies and mules as individual entries and leading buggies, coaches and multiple-hitch wagons. It is recognized as one of the largest non-motorized parades in the country.
The cultural arts in Delaware County include modern dance, theater and art exhib-its at the university, high school symphonic choir, and a terrific county fair with prestigious harness racing. The contrast makes Delaware a special place to be, to live and to work.
8
PARKS AND RECREATION
It’s all right here or close by!
Residents and businesses have a variety of year-round recreation choices in Del-aware County. In the City of Delaware,
four parks serve the entire community: Mingo Park, Blue Limestone Park, Smith Park. Doz-ens of smaller parks enhance neighborhoods, using natural space to balance built-up areas. These parks are located so every neighbor-hood will have green space within walking dis-tance. The City and County continue to work
with developers to install and extend walking paths and a bikeway network. Where possi-ble, these are laid out along natural corridors and connectors. A multi-use bikeway network offers residents recreational opportunities and a transportation alternative for getting around a growing city. Positive results include reduc-
ing dependence on motor vehicles, saving gasoline and improving air quality— not to mention good exercise!
And this theme of progress with fam-ily-and fitness-friendly culture is evident throughout Delaware County. A state-of-the-art YMCA graces both Powell and Delaware, races from 5k to full marathons can be par-ticipated nearly every weekend; and IRON-MAN recently announced the addition of the IRONMAN 70.3 Ohio triathlon, which will take place on August 21, 2016, in the City of Dela-
ware. General registration to 2500 participants opened October 27, 2015 and was filled within 48 hours.
“As the IRONMAN 70.3 race series continues to grow, we are excited to have Delaware, Ohio join our family of exceptional events,” said Steve Meckfessel, Managing Direc-
tor of Global Race Operations for IRONMAN. “IRONMAN 70.3 Ohio is sure to provide unfor-gettable race experiences for our athletes and we are proud to be able to offer a new race in this central location.”
The IRONMAN 70.3 Ohio triathlon begins with a single-loop, 1.2-mile swim in the calm waters of Delaware Lake. Athletes will then embark on a flat and fast 56-mile bike course that includes a few technical sections along the way. The course will wind through Delaware, Marion and Morrow counties before returning to Transition 2, located at Ohio Wesleyan University’s Selby Stadium. Finally, athletes will take on a double-loop, 13.1-mile run course with gently rolling hills. The course offers scenic country views and an amazing finish in front of Selby Stadium.
The City of Delaware and Central Ohio YMCA have partnered in a unique way. In 2012, the YMCA began overseeing the City’s recre-ational programming for sports and activities. Recreational programs range from dozens of individual classes for all ages to large spe-cial events including an annual Halloween party, adult triathlon and an Easter egg hunt. Mingo Park provides a variety of water recre-

ation activities at the Jack Florence Pool. Skate boarders find an area with well-designed flow, street and transition elements.
The County’s priorities point to its character. Bikeways connect people, neigh-borhoods, services, and businesses. The loca-tion of small parks within walking distance of most neighborhoods shows the city’s recog-nition of the need for places to relax and play close to home with friends and neighbors.
Delaware County has large recre-ational venues. Highbanks Metro Park pro-vides exceptional nature and hiking trails. Alum Creek State Park, Delaware State Park, Hoover Reservoir and the O’Shaughnessy Reservoir offer boating, fishing and camp-ing. Preservation Parks of Delaware County is a network of nine parks preserving green
space and providing environmental educa-tion. Olentangy Caverns, a network of caves formed millions of years ago by the relent-less action of an underground river holds evidence the Wyandot Indians used them for a safe haven from enemies. Visitors descend 105 feet to explore an amazing world where the temperature is a constant 54 degrees!
The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is another favorite. The complex includes the Zoo, Safari Golf Course and Zoombezi Bay Water Park and is a premier destination. The Zoo, ranked number one in the United States, has earned a worldwide reputation largely through the leadership of Director Emeritus Jack Hanna. Some two million people annu-ally visit to see seven thousand animals and fish representing hundreds of species.
The Columbus Zoo’s African Safari exhibit opened in May 2014. Highlights of the project include raised platforms that allow visitors to hand-feed giraffes and a watering hole that attracts animals for close-range viewing during various times of the day. The goal was for unobstructed views of the giraffes as well as lions, zebras, monkeys, cheetahs, warthogs and guinea foul.
No wonder AARP awarded Delaware a “Livable Community” designation based on the quality of life it provides! In the parks and recreation sector, Delaware has it all!
For parks and recreation, Delaware has it all with golf, boating, caving, camping, water-sliding, and, of course, “lions, tigers and bears” at the number one zoo in the United States!
10
EDUCATION IN DELAWARE
Delaware County residents and busi-ness people have education choices for their families, themselves and for
personal and professional employee develop-ment to prepare for the work place today and tomorrow. There are many alternatives, and they are all close by! Personal growth, profes-sional development and public or private edu-cation is available and affordable for Delaware County residents and business people. From pre-K through adult, the variety of educational choices in Delaware County is plentiful.
All four public school districts in Del-aware County consistently earn the highest marks on the State of Ohio report card. Col-lectively the four school districts sit atop all other counties in Ohio with the highest aver-age Performance Index score. Collaboration is key according to district leaders who meet monthly to share best practices and strategize on key financial and legislative issues. All four districts are providing top-notch educational
services at a cost well below the state average per pupil spending.
The Delaware Area Career Center (DACC) is a leader in career technical educa-tion. The Center offers programs on two cam-puses for high school students to apply skills to the workplace and to prepare for higher education by earning college credits. DACC joins the four school districts in earning the highest marks from the state of Ohio for stu-dent achievement and innovative programs. Adult programs prepare workers to enter, compete and advance in a challenging work environment that includes programs in human resources, computer applications, information systems and public safety
School / community partnerships play a big role in the success of the districts. Local business leaders serve on an advisory panel to the superintendent and strong relationships with partner agencies, including Big Brothers/Big Sisters, United Way, Delaware General
Library and Ohio Wesleyan University further enhance student opportunities and achieve-ment.
Private school options for residents seeking pre-school–12 education include the Delaware Christian School, a ministry of the Delaware Bible church, serving over 50 area churches. This school provides an educational setting centered on Biblical values. Another is the Village Academy, a pre-school–12 system in Powell with an academic program including music, dance, art, theater, consumer science and media technology. A focus on service and leadership begins with the early grades and continues through upper school.
Columbus State Community College, located just south of Camp Lazarus in Dela-ware County, offers a campus that can serve about 900 students per quarter. The 80,000 square foot, $25 million structure has video conferencing capabilities and includes 22 classrooms, two science laboratories and

a computer lab. Four degrees are offered, including the Associate of Arts and Associate of Science, representing the first two years of a bachelor’s degree. Stand-alone two-year degrees also are available in Business Man-agement and Computer Information Tech-nology.
The Ohio State University Extension, Delaware County, offers research-based edu-cational programming and materials. The OSU Extension partners with community leaders, officials and organizations to iden-tify educational program opportunities that target issues faced today by the community, farm families and neighborhoods. They offer resource development and volunteer commu-nity service options through Agriculture, Hor-ticulture, Family and Consumer Sciences and Community Development, Natural Resources and 4-H programs.
The Methodist Theological School, incorporated in 1958, is a graduate profes-
sional school whose purpose is to prepare leaders for ministry in the Methodist Church.
Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU) is a small, selective, national liberal arts university, with a long-standing tradition of academic rigor, travel-learning and hands-on experi-ences tied to the curriculum. The university
provides the business community a source of student interns who are eager to gain practi-cal experience that complements their fields of study. The Woltemade Center for Econom-ics, Business & Entrepreneurship offers free lectures, including the annual Economic Out-look Conference, that help local businesses
keep up to date with important trends. Many of these presentations are web-streamed and all are open to the public. The Sagan National Colloquium brings noted speakers to campus to discuss significant issues affecting both aca-demia and public policy. OWU also has part-nered with Main Street Delaware for “Brunch
and Browse,” which brings new students and families to downtown businesses during cam-pus visits.
Education and development choices continue to grow in Delaware County and that is good for business!

HEALTHCARE IN DELAWARE
Delaware families, businesses and their employees have many health care choices: individual practitioners, clinics
and a hospital offering a wide range of services in town or close by through health network connections. Chiropractic and wellness ser-vices, providers in skilled and extended care, home care, and assisted living, plus dentists and optometrists, are among those available to serve a variety of health care, vision, hearing and related needs.
Growth in the senior population creates a demand for a wide range of health care needs and options. Active seniors will enjoy programs, services and social life with SourcePoint. There are companies and programs that provide in-home assistance and care for a few hours or longer, lending an ear or a helping hand. Res-idential facilities offer a variety of prices and services, including independent and assisted living and skilled nursing care. For seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia or who have reached a stage where hospice care is needed, services are available at several convenient sites in the Delaware area.
Families and individuals find the loca-tion and hours of the urgent care facility at Lewis Center convenient, with preventative services, examinations, on-the-job injury treat-ment, and an on-site pharmacy. Other clinics offer primary care through several sites, each with convenient operating hours. An OB/GYN practice, partnering with OhioHealth system’s Grady Hospital, provides expertise in women’s health at all stages of life.
Care for health issues related to hear-ing, speech development and the eyes is available in several Delaware businesses. Routine eye examinations, LASIK procedures, early identification of glaucoma and macular degeneration, treatment of dry eye, eyewear selection and contact lenses are services close to home. Persons needing audiology and/or speech pathology procedures will find a full array of attention and treatment. This includes identification, assessment and treatment of temporary and permanent conditions with speech, language, feeding, swallowing, hearing and balance disorders for infants to older adults.
Delaware County helps residents meet many of their health care needs through the Delaware General Health offices and their neighborhood health centers. Child immu-nizations are available on a sliding fee scale. Adults and children receive health services, nutrition counseling and many other services. The Department also is responsible for envi-ronmental health programs, vital statistics and
data management, water and food safety, pest control and health education.
Recovery and rehabilitation facilities are well-established in Delaware. Cardiac and trauma rehabilitation helps patients recover to their fullest potential. Equine therapy is an innovative treatment using horses as an aid in the behavioral health rehabilitation process. Several agencies and organizations have pro-
grams for alcohol and drug treatment and pre-vention, behavioral health care, resources for educators, and detoxification.
Grady Memorial Hospital has a home-town feel with a long reach as a member of the OhioHealth network. This affiliation gives Grady access to a broad array of services and programs, providing a complete continuum
of care for patients. Delaware residents have access to 200 physicians and 34 specialty areas available at the hospital. Patients will find cardiac services, a gender knee replacement program, and emergency department per-formance levels that they might expect from a larger institution. Grady’s accreditation as a Chest Pain Center brings a multi-discipline approach to treatment of heart patients. The
hospital is approved as a clinical trial site for cancer studies, an advantage for Delaware patients participating in the Cancer Services program. An Agricultural Health program, unique for Ohio, works to reduce agricul-ture-related incidents. Grady is expanding with Delaware Health Village, while main-taining its commitment to the present loca-

tion. The Delaware Health Center serves the community with medical imaging, laboratory and urgent care services, breast center, cancer treatment along with medical office space.
The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center brings nationally recognized, leading-edge medical care to Lewis Center. CarePoint Lewis Center combines a variety of outpatient health services in a single location, right in the Delaware community – offering compassionate care delivered with the same level of quality and personalized attention found at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Services at CarePoint range from routine such as primary care and X-rays to specialized expertise in sports medicine, pediatrics, cardiovascular medicine, ear, nose and throat, orthopaedics, physical therapy, podiatry, rheumatology, spine and wound care are all available at CarePoint Lewis Center.
Many of The Ohio State’s Wexner Med-ical Center’s most talented specialists and pri-mary care physicians have transferred their practices from the Medical Center’s main cam-pus to CarePoint Lewis Center, offering Dela-
ware residents access to nationally recognized medical expertise a little closer to home.
Hometown Urgent Care and Occupa-tional Health is located on Sunbury Road, east of downtown. Open seven days a week, the physicians at Hometown treat minor illnesses and injuries and offer on-site x-ray, EKG, pre-scriptions, etc. No appointment is necessary in most instances. A majority of employer-based services are also available: workcase injury management, BWC, vaccinations, physicals, drug screens and evaluations.
In November of 2015, Mt. Carmel opened their first venture into Delaware County with their 130,000-square- foot out-patient center emphasizing fitness and well-ness – complete with indoor running track and pool alongside more familiar physician offices and an urgent care center. Part of the Trinity Health System, it offers the com-munity the latest in fitness equipment, an indoor track, group exercise studios and a comprehensive aquatics program, including a competitive lap pool. Included are common areas and community space for meetings, a
demonstration kitchen for healthy cooking classes, a healthy food café and a spa. And should you ever get sick, the campus also features an emergency department, primary care and specialty physician offices, and lab and imaging services right on site.
Healthcare in Delaware is not limited to people, but includes “man’s best friend” as well. Quality veterinary services are located throughout Delaware. Those seeking treat-ment for their pets will find full-service care facilities offering in-house blood work, dental, surgery including laser technology, urgent care, day school for dogs and extended stay for canines, felines and exotics.
Caring, committed and compassionate veterinarians are close to home and are avail-able to help create mutually healthy relation-ships between owners and their pets.
What is the prognosis for Delaware County’s health care? Continued positive accessibility, affordability, convenience, selec-tion and technology integration!

SHOPPING/DINING/ENTERTAINMENT
Delaware County has shopping styles that meet all needs and interests. Con-venience, choice and style describe
the variety available. The downtown Delaware shopping district invites visitors to explore tree-lined streets and discover shops in historic brick buildings. Pop in and out of the home decor, antique and specialty shops in Shawnee Hills, along Powell’s main street and in Sunbury’s village square.
The Polaris Fashion Mall and Polaris Towne Center at Interstate 71 and Powell Road is an area bursting with retail, restau-
rants and hotels. The mall has become a des-tination shopping site with upscale retailers, over 150 stores, including six anchors, and eating establishments. Polaris Towne Center is across Polaris Parkway from the Mall and has grown toward Route 23 and Lewis Cen-ter. The addition of Cabellas has spurred the 2016 opening of a 90-store Tanger Outlet Mall as well as Ikea, known for being particular in
considering a new location. Shoppers will find restaurants, grocery stores, family fun centers, free-standing restaurants and a wide range of service outlets and specialty stores.
Downtown Delaware provides today’s merchandise and services with yesterday’s charm. The streetscape and storefronts recall another time but the stores are just as up-to-date as the cars lining the busy streets. Enjoy coffee, shop in one of several boutique cloth-ing stores, or join the growing IPA culture. Find the unusual and the unique downtown. Dela-ware has become a dining destination within
Central Ohio with its concentration of unique, one-of-a-kind restaurants and taverns.
Nearby Powell is known for its antique and home décor shops. Shawnee Hills has a number of merchants with items that will catch the eye. Sunbury’s Village Square invites visitors to park and browse the antique and specialty stores on the square and nearby streets. Each town and village has fairs, market
days and other events such as Delaware’s “First Fridays.” These events attract crafts, artisans and retailers with opportunities to find that perfect gift. The items offered and the feelings evoked in any of the downtown and village shopping areas are very different from the “big box” shopping, making the small-scale shop-ping experience special.
Each of the communities can boast live music in cozy taverns and Downtown Dela-ware is home to the Strand Theatre. The Strand, at 100 years old, is one of the few remaining, continuously open, first-run movies theatre in the nation. Jeff’s Jam, an annual street-closing, music festival, raises funds in the name of local music promoter Jeff Meyer, to provide scholar-ships to budding musicians.
Choose the pace that suits every prefer-ence: the selection and the atmosphere of the mall’s crowds with all the noise and hustle; a quick trip to pick up something quickly in one of many shopping hubs; or enjoy the more leisurely pace offered in the downtown areas throughout Delaware County. All combine to give Delaware County a rich set of choices with-out having to go far.
There are great choices in Delaware, and they are all close by!

BANKING, FINANCE AND INSURANCE
Individuals and institutions will find a range of financial assistance and solutions in Del-aware County to meet their needs. It’s all
here and much of the financial sector still has a home town feel. Business no longer is as easy as an agreement or a handshake, but depend-able connections are in Delaware, too.
Several institutions in this sector have roots going back decades. Trimble Insurance Agency has three generations working in the iconic Insurance institution; Wesbanco Bank opened its first branch in Delaware County in 2015 but the bank began in 1870. And even though there’s lots of tradition, there’s also today’s technology and communication, like CES Credit Union’s personal finance blog and podcast. Today, the names are updated and the array of choices seem as abundant as the Delaware County crops.
There are many categories under the financial services umbrella: banks, insurance agencies, savings and loans, credit unions, accounting firms, financial planners, and invest-ment management firms. Delaware area banks
have every product expected in a competitive market, and includes Huntington Bank, one of the largest users of the Small Business Admin-istration loans, helping start-up entrepreneurs. Several credit unions in Delaware County offer
many of the same services as banks. Their char-ters allow them to offer programs and rewards to their members.
The insurance agencies in Delaware insure a vast array of products from farm prop-erty to IRAs. Several of the agents specialize in health care insurance, a complicated and changing sector.
Accounting firms fill a niche for audit-ing, accounting, payroll and bookkeeping. Their services include mergers, acquisitions and sales, financial and retirement planning,
estate and trust planning and financial and retirement planning. Some investment firms that focus on individual investors handle a similar range of services plus savings programs and investor education. Others offer expertise
in corporate investments with equity-related plans, fixed-income resources, pooled prod-ucts, insurance, cash management, investment and advisory services.
The financial market is aggressive, competitive, and consumer-driven. There is a wealth of information available to get a great deal. Do the research, then walk in and talk to the local banker or financial institution rep-resentative. Don’t be surprised at the neigh-bor-to-neighbor atmosphere.

INDUSTRY AND COMMERCE
Location, location, location! The adage of the relationship between success and location holds true with economic devel-
opment in Delaware County. Delaware County has been the strong
pulse of Ohio’s economy. Location, infra-structure, and workforce; large tracts of rea-sonably-priced land, proximity to highway
and rail transportation networks, utilities, plus government collaboration attract and retain business; all factors that contribute to a continued positive business climate in Del-aware. And it doesn’t hurt that the county is located within 600 miles of two-thirds of the
U.S. population. Delaware has been the fast-est growing county in Ohio and is the 21st fastest growing county in the United States. The population of the county increased 50.4% from 2000 to 2008. Median household income has outpaced the rest of the state with the influx of professionals and two-in-come households. City and county officials
collaborate to maintain and enhance a cli-mate that works for business and the greater community.
The City of Delaware’s location favors business development. The interstate high-way, major state roads, two railroads and a
municipal airport serve the area. Seventy per-cent of the county’s manufacturing capacity is in the city’s two industrial parks, Johnson Industrial Park and Delaware Industrial Park. Orange Point Industrial Park and Sunbury Commerce Park are not far from the City of Delaware and are located on major highways. These parks are ideal for distribution cen-ters and manufacturing. The current mix of manufacturing includes disposable diapers at one site, custom hydraulics and cylinders at another, hoists and rigging for suspended work platforms at a third. Several of these companies have a global reach. One man-ufactures color concentrates and another makes resistance-welding electrodes and accessories, both for global distribution. The headquarters of a world leader in contain-erboard production is within a few miles of the city. A nearby Japanese-owned com-pany makes automotive shock absorbers and power steering unit components, also for

customers around the world. The Distribu-tion Center sector also is broad-based, from high-performance automotive parts to food and produce.
And in 2015, PPG Industries, celebrated its 50th anniversary. Why is that so notewor-thy? PPG’s opening spurred the creation of the industrial park in the City of Delaware, which today is the home of 70% of the county’s man-ufacturing. Beginning as a plate glass factory in Pittsburgh in 1883, PPG is responsible for eliminating the “rust bucket” when, in the 1960’s, PPG commercialized an automobile paint coating process that protects from rust.
PPG’s color palette is virtually endless with the introduction of its DesignaColor System for custom-tinting consumer paints.
And in 2015, the City of Delaware and Delaware County broke ground on a 3.8 mile north/south road extension. Roughly 5.2 miles, the $30.4 million, Sawmill Park-way extension will not only provide another north/west corridor, but will provide the opportunity to develop another in-demand industrial park.
And the entrepreneurial spirit contin-ues to take root in Delaware County. From HVAC to marketing, lawn care to digital man-
agement, automotive sales and automotive service, products and services are born and flourish in Delaware. With the holistic view and guidance of strong, experienced economic development leaders at all municipal levels, the endorsement of the governing bodies, and the support of organizations like the chambers of commerce, Delaware County’s arms are open to business.
Delaware has it all: location, infra-structure, workforce, an atmosphere of col-laboration, plus city and county economic development organizations that find and take advantage of opportunities for growth.

AGRICULTURE AND HORTICULTURE
Traditional farming continues to be a strong part of the Delaware County economy. According to the Ohio County
Profiles website, 53 percent of county land is in cropland and pasture land. There are 720 farms with an average size of 182 acres. The total land production of approximately 131,000 acres is predominantly crop farms, most of which produce corn and soybeans, wheat and hay. Annual cash receipts from crop farming are approximately $79 million.
Nine farms are registered with the Ohio Department of Agriculture as Century Farms, in the same family for 100 years or more. One family has been on the same land since 1814.
Livestock farming is a significant part of the agriculture picture. Ohio is the sec-
ond-largest producer of lambs east of the Mis-sissippi and Delaware County contributes in a big way. Delaware County farmers also raise hogs and cattle—and sheep in substantially smaller numbers.
Nursery products in the horticulture sec-tor are another notable segment with nearly $22 million in annual sales, not quite half that of agriculture, but a significant size.
Both agriculture and horticulture busi-nesses drive a second tier of business. For example, livestock farms buy materials for enclosures, purchase feed and use veterinary services. Crop farmers buy seed and plants and they carefully employ agricultural chemi-cals, fertilizer lime and soil conditioners. Crop farmers and horticulturists have a substantial
investment in trucks, tractors other self-pro-pelled machinery and auxiliary equipment. And everyone needs fuel and maintenance.
The Ohio State University Extension office supports agriculture and horticulture with a mission to bring the resources of the University to the county. Extension programs help landowners and farmers manage their property, finding ways to improve land pro-duction and efficiency while protecting the environment.
The future of the agriculture and hor-ticulture sector is shaped by several develop-ment programs. The Delaware Area Career Cen-ter presents the greatest variety. High school students can learn skills and explore interests in Equine Science, Environmental Technolo-
www.DelawareAreaChamber.com 21
gies, Landscape and Turf Management and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium School. The National FFA Organization, known as the FFA or Future Farmers of America until 1988, prepares young people for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agricul-ture. Middle school students can join FFA and continue through college. FFA agricultural edu-cation programs have grown to encompass all facets of agriculture from production farming, agribusiness and forestry to biotechnology, marketing and food processing. During their education, some members select a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE), a “hands-on” application of the classroom learning that rein-forces preparation for career success.
4-H is a national education program for youth and in Delaware County there are 75 clubs involving 1200 young people ages five to 19. About 320 adult volunteers give over 15,000 hours annually to guide the program and teach life skills in leadership, decision making and communication skills through project work. Projects include raising livestock, training pets, making clothing, growing plants and even mak-ing model rockets. Project literature is prepared
by The Ohio State University Extension faculty. With traditional agriculture holding
steady, horticulture has emerged in the mar-ket. This is the science and art of growing fruits, vegetables, flowers or ornamental plants, and also includes landscaping, lawn care, garden-ing, nursery, turf grass and tree care.
Why is this sector growing? One owner of a principle Delaware business in this seg-ment says the answer is quality of life in Dela-ware. Beautification creates a positive impres-
sion of the city. Beautification is furthered by the Master Gardener program managed by the OSU Extension office. The Master Gardener Volunteer Program provides intensive training in horticulture to interested Ohio residents who then volunteer their time assisting with educational programs and activities for Ohio residents through their local OSU Extension
county office. Volunteers are not required to have gardening skills or knowledge; a passion for learning about gardening and sharing this knowledge with others is a must!
A key point of the horticulture segment that many people would not necessarily know is that advancements in horticulture include use of organic materials as disease inhibitors and natural plant food.
What’s the trend and the future in agri-culture and horticulture? Think organics with
increased composting as the collection and transportation details are worked out. Also agritainment, where traditional farms and hor-ticulture outlets partner with the urban dwell-ers to give a taste of the country worlds. Think corn maizes, hayrides, pumpkin patches, berry picking, farm festivals and haunted barns at Halloween!

Getting and staying healthy is near the top of everyone’s long list of priorities these days. And chances are you’re already taking steps in that direction — eating more fruits and vegetables, drinking water, exercising and going for regular check-ups. But we all can use a little help sometimes, whether that’s a motivating incentive or a partner in the process. And if a partner’s what you need, you’ve got one in MC Fitness & Health.
It’s a new integrated health and fitness facility from Mount Carmel that’s opening on U.S. 23 in Lewis Center, and it’s giving you a convenient partner on the journey to get and stay healthy. That’s because MC Fitness & Health offers everything you need — a fitness center, health services and an emergency department — all in one convenient location.
At the core of the facility is MC Fitness, a 50,000-square-foot fitness center with a medically integrated approach to helping members achieve optimal health and fitness. In addition to spacious workout areas with state-of-the-art functional and strength training equipment, MC Fitness has four fitness studios for a wide variety of group exercise classes. The facility also has an indoor walking/jogging track; a 25-meter, 8-lane lap pool; an exercise pool and warm water therapy pool; full-service locker rooms with complimentary towel service; plus showers, whirlpools, saunas and steam rooms.
Beyond the equipment and facilities, the center boasts a team of degreed, certified fitness professionals, class instructors and other staff dedicated to helping members achieve their health and fitness goals through personalized exercise plans, personal training and unlimited group exercise classes.
MC Fitness isn’t just about fitness, though. It’s about community and wellness, too. The facility features common areas and community space for meetings, a demonstration kitchen for healthy cooking classes, a healthy food café and even a spa.
The key to a medically integrated fitness center isn’t just great fitness facilities, of course. It’s having an expert team of physicians and other medical professionals working hand in hand with the fitness team to improve your health. That’s what makes MC Fitness & Health unique.
It starts with having plenty of outpatient health services available right on site. From primary care, cardiology and sports medicine physician offices to centers specializing in physical therapy, cardiac rehab, women’s health and disease management, MC Fitness & Health has proactive care well
covered. And the adjacent full-service, 24-hour Emergency Department can handle your acute care as well.
The Emergency Department is part of Mount Carmel St. Ann’s, so patients have convenient access to the same high-quality care, board-certified emergency room physicians and state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment they would expect at a full-service hospital. They also have access to a full clinical laboratory that utilizes the latest medical technology to provide timely medical testing. And any CTs, MRIs, ultrasounds or x-rays they need can be read through a seamless electronic link to Mount Carmel’s board-certified radiologists.
It may be hard to imagine having all the health, wellness and fitness resources you need in one place, but if you’re looking for a true partner in the process of getting and staying healthy, that’s how it ought to be.
