Welcome to the 2016 GHSA Championship Series for

Baseball, the final GHSA events of this school year. Nearly four weeks ago these teams began competing in these playoffs, and now they are poised for the final challenge – com-peting for the State Championship. The Georgia High School Associ-ation is proud of the commitment to excellence that these players and coaches have demonstrated throughout the season, as the qual-ity of play in high school baseball in Georgia continues to grow. Congrat-ulations to Ernie Yarbrough, GHSA baseball administrator, on a job well done now and throughout the entire season.

We hope that you, the faithful fans, will enjoy these games, and that you will demonstrate the high-est levels of sportsmanship as you positively encourage “your team” toward victory. The GHSA is grateful for the gen-erous contributions of its corporate partners and preferred vendors who enable the GHSA to provide these events. As you see the list of these partners around the field, please sup-port them at every opportunity.

There were 71 former GHSA baseball standouts that heard their name

called out in the 2015 MLB Draft last year, led by No. 1 overall pick, Dansby Swanson. For the next crop of GHSA talent, look no further than this year’s state championship matchups where the Peach State’s top prospects are vy-ing for the elusive state title. Arguably the best matchup in any classification for the state champion-ship can be found in AAAAAA as No.

without any earned runs. Seniors Christian Young and Odlanier Rodri-guez have also helped guide Locust Grove on the mound. It’s a Region 4 matchup in AAA as Westminster takes on two-time de-fending state champion, Blessed Trini-ty. Power hitting lefty and Duke signee, Will Benson, another possible early round draft pick, leads the Wildcats as they try to dethrone the Titans. Joining Benson, is LSU signee Rankin Woley, Missouri signee Armaan Painter and standout sophomore Ryan Miller, in a powerful Westminster lineup.Leading Aces... Blessed Trinity’s Hayden Lehman (10-0, 0.70 ERA) and John Michael Bertrand (9-1, 0.78 ERA) lead the Ti-tans pitching. At the plate, the Titans have a powerful line up of brothers Conor (.442 BA, 5 HR), a senior Au-burn signee, and Colin Davis (.408 BA, 3 HR) and freshman CJ Abrams (.464 BA, 1 HR). In AA, Wesleyan, junior Georgia Tech commit Colin Hall is the center-piece for the Wolves at the plate. Junior Jordan Ward and Georgia Tech signee and Andy Archer lead on the hill. For Lovett, the Lions go as senior Aaron Schunk goes. Schunk, a Georgia signee, leads the Lions on the hill, in the field and at the plate. David Easterling and Freddy Achecar (Georgetown) are also potent batters lining up for Lovett. Photos courtesy of David McGregor and Walton HS

2 nationally-ranked (according to Per-fect Game) Walton makes the four-mile trip to take on archrival Pope. Leading the way for Walton is Clem-son commit, and a projected early round draft pick, Carter Kieboom. Kie-boom (‘16) is joined by Georgia Tech commits, Parker McCoy (‘16), Michael Guldberg (‘17), and Jason Rooks (‘17) in a very dangerous hitting lineup for the Raiders. Pope is led by arguably the best

player in the 2016 class, Joshua Lowe. Lowe, a Florida State signee, is ranked as the No. 4 player in the country by Perfect Game and is projected as an early first round pick in the upcom-ing draft. Lowe isn’t alone though as Georgia commit, Ryan Webb and Ken-nesaw State signee, Matt Rowland, command the hill for the Greyhounds. The most intriguing aspect of this se-ries is how the pitching for Pope will match up against the star-studded lineup of Walton. In AAAAA, Houston County takes on the winner of South Effingham and Loganville. D.L. Hall, a junior Florida State commit, leads the Bears at the plate. He’s ranked as the No. 7 pros-pect in the 2017 class by PerfectGame. Georgia signee and Perfect Game All-American, Anthony Locey (‘16), leads the group on the hill and will be looking to bring a state championship to Houston County with his mid-90’s fastball and plus off-speed pitches.Familiar Foes... Another top team in the country is featured in the AAAA State Champi-onship as No. 8 ranked Buford takes on Locust Grove in a rematch of last year’s Eliyte Eight. Georgia commit Justin Glover leads Buford on the hill while Georgia Tech commits, Austin Wilhite, Nick Wilhite, Griffin Jolliff and Ken-nesaw State commit Brandon Marsh lead the Wolves at the plate. For Locust Grove, the Wildcats boast a deep pitching staff led by junior Ethan Lindow. In the past two games, Lindow has struck out 18 in 14 innings

All eyes will be on a pair of two-time state champions as Region 5 foes

Walton (30-4) and Pope (28-6) do battle in the Class AAAAAA finals. Pope edged Walton for the No. 1 seed coming out of the state’s toughest re-gion with a 14-2 mark while the Raid-ers finished 13-3. The two squads split during the regular season with Pope winning at Walton 16-1 and the Raiders winning at the Dog Pound 10-5. The Greyhounds rely on a strong pitching staff that is bolstered by Matt Rowland (Kennesaw State), Cameron Allison (Middle Tennessee State) and junior ace Ryan Webb (UGA). At the dish Pope is powered by hot prospect Joshua Lowe. Lowe, a 6-foot-3 third baseman set to attend Florida State, is ranked No. 15 in Baseball Factory’s Top 100 players. The lefty with power to all fields will be important for Walton to slow down. The Raiders have their own star hitter with designs on being drafted this June in infielder Carter Kieboom (Clemson). The shortstop/third base-man is pegged as the No. 4 ranked high schooler in the entire nation by Base-ball Factory. Described as the “most advanced hitter in the high school class with a mix of barrel accuracy, quick hands, patience and confidence,” Kie-boom forms one of the best infields in the nation alongside Parker McCoy

son has all five tools that MLB teams covet. His name will be called early in the MLB Draft. First baseman Armaan Painter (Missouri) joins Benson in a lineup that has scored a statewide-best 353 runs. The Wildcats’ only kryptonite this season has been 33-2 Blessed Trinity, who took three games to get past a gritty Jackson County team. The Ti-tans thumped Westminster in their two meetings this year 15-1 and 9-3. Hayden Lehman (10-0, 0.70 ERA), John Michael Bertrand (9-1, 0.78 ERA) and Peyton Glavine (6-0, 0.80 ERA) lead a devastating pitching staff that is in search of their third straight ti-tle. Jake Bogosian (.294, 38 RBI), Au-burn-commit Conor Davis (.442, 5 HR, 34 RBI), Garrett Dupuis (.381, 30 RBI) and freshman CJ Abrams (.464, 29 RBI) power a deep offensive onslaught. Class AA... Alex Thompson hurled a com-plete-game shutout in Game 3 against Holy Innocents’ to lift defending state champs Wesleyan (28-9) back into the state title game. Thompson was mas-terful in the 4-0 win and will be asked to come up big yet again as the Wolves meet yet another Region 6 rival, Lovett (23-11-1) who ended Greater Atlanta Christian’s season with a 4-0 Game 3 victory of their own. Back in mid-March, Wesleyan took two of three from Lovett winning 3-1 and 9-1 with a 3-1 loss sandwiched in between. The Lions have won seven titles with their last coming in 2013. Cole Mannion finished 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs in Wesleyan’s series clinching win over Holy Innocents’. Ben O’Meara and Freddy Achecar (Georgetown) com-bined for a one-hitter in Lovett’s shutout of GAC. Aaron Schunk (UGA) provided the offense with a 2-run homer. Photos courtesy of Brian L. Morgan/ Brianography, Pope HS, Walton HS, and Westminster HS

(Georgia Tech). On the hill, Zac Kristo-fak (UGA), Chris Hummel and Aaron Toporek are among the staff’s most re-liable pitchers. Class AAAAA... Houston County (28-8) punched its ticket to the state championship by surviving Gainesville in Game 3, 2-0. The Bears aim for their second title in three years as they face South Effingham or Loganville. Tanner Hall hit an RBI double in the third and Dil-lon Strickland popped a homer to give Houston County the lead 2-0 before Hall, a lefty, escaped a bases loaded jam to preserve a complete-game one-hit shutout. In the finals, expect a heavy dose of aces Tony Locey (UGA) and D.Ll Hall (Florida State). Locey trans-ferred in from Hardaway and is ranked No. 58 in the top 100. Hall, a junior, is a devastating lefty. In the semifinals between South Effingham and Loganville, University of Georgia-signee and righty Timothy Elliott of Loganville pitched his way to a 5-4 victory in Game 1. The Mus-tangs responded by finding success against Mississippi-State signee and lefty Mitchell Miller in Game 2 before holding on for a 5-1 victory. South Eff-ingham’s Davis Hare allowed just four hits in the Game 2 win. On the plate, South Effingham’s Austin Thompson

finished the double-header 5-for-9 with two RBI.

Class AAAA... Buford (31-3) enters the Class AAAA state championship as the de-fending champs but Locust Grove (31-4-1) has established itself as a worthy title contender. The two programs met back on Feb. 29 at Buford where the Wildcats announced their presence to the rest of the state with a 3-0 shut-out of the Wolves. Locust Grove is in search of more sweet redemption after Buford swept them out of the playoffs in the Elite Eight a year ago. Class of 2019 standout Nolan Crisp is a Mississippi State-com-mit. The right-handed pitcher/third baseman can carry the Wildcats at times. Justin Nicholson, Ethan Lindow, Christian Young (Andrew College) and Odlanier Rodriguez make up an experienced and deep pitching staff for coach Stephen Phillips. Gavin Lee cranked the game-deciding 3-run ho-mer against Buford earlier in the year. Rodriguez danced in and out of trouble going three innings in relief of starter Lindow, allowing three hits, three walks and striking out five. Crisp picked up the save. Buford stranded 15 runners in the game. Brothers Austin and Nick Wilhite are both set to attend Geor-gia Tech. Brandon Marsh (Kennesaw State) provides power from right field while right-handed pitcher Griffin Jol-liff (Georgia Tech) is the team’s veter-an pitcher. Class AAA... Two-sport star Will Benson leads Westminster (28-6) into the Class AAA finals where they have a chance to claim their first championship since 1975. Benson, the No. 6 ranked pros-pect out of high school, is a Bo Jack-son-like outfielder that has committed to Duke. At 6-foot-5, 225 pounds, Ben-
