TJ’s MUSIC PROGRAM PROVIDESGUITAR LESSONS AT FSBGC

In memory of the late T.J. Cunningham, small group guitar lessons are being offered at the Stephens and Evans Boys & Girls Club this Spring. Club members ages 9 – 12 are eligible to participate and classes are 45 minutes in length. Instructor Joseph Underwood is teaching elementary basics to the participants. The program is sponsored through fundraising efforts led by Tommy Cunningham, who established a fund to support the Boys & Girls Club Musicfest in 2010. The late T.J. Cunningham passed away in 2009 as the result of automobile accident. “T.J. was a former Club member who loved music” said Tommy Cunningham. “We felt the best way to memorialize him was to set up a music program at the Club in his honor” he added. Since 2010, the TJ Guitar Program has given away new guitars to Club members selected from an annual contest. The guitars are presented to the winners during the Summer Musicfest. Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club recipients include:

Cunningham is hopeful the program will soon expand to include piano lessons and group performance.

FREE BASEBALL CLINIC SETFOR GOLDTRAP ON MAY 9

Boys & Girls ages 6-14 are invited to take part in a free baseball clinic sponsored by Chevy and Cal Ripken. The event will take place at Goldtrap Boys & Girls Club on Monday May 9 from 6 p.m. til 9.p.m. This will be the fourth year in a row that Chevy has provided the clinic at the Club. More than 200 participants are expected to register for the free Clinic. “These coaches are all former college players who are great at working with young people” said FSBGC athletic director Chris Reeder. “With four fi elds at our Goldtrap site, there is plenty of room for several learning stations” he added. The clinic is open to the public, and parents interested in registering their children can do so on-line or at the Goldtrap Club. The hands-on clinic keeps participants busy with various skills, drills and learning sessions. “We will have the event rain or shine” said Reeder. The clinic was moved indoors two years ago because of a storm.

Summer Golf Instruction Provided By PGA for the FSBGC

For the fi fth consecutive year, PGA professional Steve Nichols will be teaching golf lessons this summer for FSBGC members through a grant provided by the PGA and Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Weekly sessions will be available for Club members at the Evans Boys & Girls Club on June 17, 24 and July 1, 8, 15. A late summer/fall session will be offered August 19, 26 and September 2, 9, 16. Participants will learn basic fundamentals of the game while practicing sportsmanship and respect.

531 Games Played DuringFSBGC Basketball Season With Cooper Clinic Road to the Final Four championship games concluding the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club basketball season, a total of 531 games were played. All fi ve FSBGC gymnasiums were used for league and tournament play. For the second year in a row, the FSBGC offered gold and silver brackets for tournament play. All of the teams fi nishing in their top half of league standings advanced to the gold tourney. The silver bracket consisted of teams fi nishing in the lower half of their league standings. The formation of the gold and silver brackets was established to create a more equal competition among teams in the rinky dink, pee wee and midget age divisions. (see standings on pages 10 & 11).

GIRLS INTRAMURAL SOFTBALLLEAGUE SET FOR SUMMER

Since 2012, the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club has offered an intramural softball for girls (grades 3-6) during the summer program. Games are played on Thursday mornings at the Evans Boys & Girls Club ball fi elds during June and July. Last year, four teams from the FSBGC (Stephens, Jeffrey, Evans, Goldtrap) participated along with the Van Buren Boys & Girls Club. Club offi cials are hoping that additional teams will be added during the 2016 season. Games are scheduled for mid-mornings to avoid the summer heat. The Club offers transportation for participants from each unit to the ball fi eld and back. “This is a league that focuses of participation and fun” said Chris Reeder, FSBGC athletic director. “Many of the girls playing don’t have the opportunity to play on travel teams or with elite programs” Reeder added. Jerseys are supplied by the FSBGC and girls need their own glove and shorts. Sign-ups for the FSBGC girls softball league continue from May 1 thru May 31. Staff and volunteers serve as coaches and umpires for the program. Practices are conducted at each Club unit. The purpose of the program is to promote team work, sportsmanship, fi tness and fundamentals of the sport.
