A LETTER FROM THE MUSEUM CHAIRMAN AND PRESIDENT

Thank you for your continued support. In 2016, thousands of children came to the National Hellenic Museum (NHM), helping them grow into informed citizens with a sense of pride in their heritage. Thousands visited the exhibits, attended classes and fieldtrips. And all gained insight about themselves and society. The National Hellenic Museum proudly serves as a steward to your history and our future.

The year of 2016 was a time of transition for the NHM. Through growth and change, more professionals have joined the team and the infrastructure is more robust as museum best practices are being implemented. The education team expanded to offer more classes, community events and public programs. The Trial of Antigone was a great success and filmed for television. Through these efforts, we have reached more people than in any prior year.

As 2017 begins, in the first quarter alone we have already exceeded last year’s attendance numbers by 20%; by April, over 6000 children and and adults had visited for fieldtrips, school programs and evening lectures. In this way, the NHM is poised to reach even larger audiences in 2017.

We are proud to announce here, the Future Funds, with a strategic vision for positioning the collections of the National Hellenic Museum as the hub of all Greek American archives. As the physical heart to our diverse community, and the center of a wide ranging diaspora, efforts at the Museum are now focused on taking our Museum collections into the digital age.

By digitizing our archives and library, the Museum will provide resources for family historians and scholars of all ages, everywhere. Through digitization, the National Hellenic Museum can be explored from your home, a classroom or onsite in the Museum. This is the future of lifelong learning. With your generous help, these endeavors are possible.

SUSTAINING THE NATIONAL HELLENIC MUSEUMTHE FUTURE FUNDS, Μελλοντικά Kεφάλαια

The Future Funds are four financial accounts centered around four practice areas of the National Hellenic Museum. Each fund holds temporarily restricted, and investible, assets that ensure long-term sustainability and also guarantee that current resources are available to provide exciting and vibrant programming where the Museum serves the community.

THE EDUCATION FUND – LIFELONG LEARNING FOR ALLThe Education Fund supports learning as it happens every day at the NHM. Trained museum educators use a variety of interactive and differentiated teaching methods to promote culture and heritage, encourage critical thinking, and inspire children and adults. The Museum School offers classes, courses and fieldtrips where anyone can learn about the arts, sciences and humanities as related to Greek history. Offered for Pre-K through grade 12, fieldtrips with guided tours and all school programs match Illinois Learning Standards and Common Core Standards.

THE MUSEUM EXPERIENCE FUND – SHARING CULTUREThe Museum Experience Fund supports the NHM as a center of experiential learning and engaging storytelling that brings cultural topics alive in ways that diverse audiences can understand. This fund enables the development and curation of engaging temporary, permanent, and traveling exhibits that inspire visitors throughout three floors of gallery spaces. Thought provoking tours share the Greek American experience and rich aspects of the Hellenic legacy, using an interactive museum experience to share lessons from the past that inform and enhance our present day experiences. Additional community events, public programs, and lecture series engage students from all walks of life.

THE COLLECTIONS, ORAL HISTORY, & LIBRARY FUND – PRESERVING GREEK AMERICAN HISTORYThe Collections, Oral History, and Library Fund supports all the ways the Museum holds, builds, and preserves the heritage of our community. The NHM uniquely specializes in gathering Greek American stories through historically significant objects, archival collections, and oral history. Artifacts, books, manuscripts, and digital media files require special care, shelving, and preservation. These activities require museum specialists to properly store, care for, and provide access to our culturally significant holdings. Archival processes also include cataloging and digitization, and in the future, the Museum archives and library will include accessible portals for locating the artifacts and histories held in the NHM collections. Through digitization, the NHM’s ability to support genealogical, historical, and academic research will be greatly enhanced by the Museum’s ability to reach audiences onsite, offsite, and online.

THE MUSEUM BEAUTIFICATION & OPERATIONS FUND –SUPPORT & SUSTAIN THE INFRASTRUCTUREThe Museum Beautification and Operations Fund supports the Museum’s long-term position as a hub for the national community and a place where all can gather and share memories. A museum facility that is safe, secure, and enjoyable enhances the museum experience and helps draw community groups together. Needed support includes general, preventative, and emergency maintenance for the facility, enhancement of operational functionality, and overall upkeep and decoration. As the only national museum dedicated to the Greek American experience, keeping all aspects of the NHM in working order ensures that the Greek American community displays visible pride, demonstrates civic responsibility, and effectively supports learning for all.
