N McDonald/H Brownlie Matters Arising: Nil Chairman’s Report: After welcoming everyone to the 2015 AGM making special reference to the presence of David and Trudy Small from Omakau Neil McDonald presented his report for adoption making comment on the following:

o Once again emphasized the importance of the funding we received from the Otago Community Trust; the various gaming trusts and our loyal interclub and squash sponsors. Acknowledged expenditure needed to be tightly managed.

o Congratulated Don McDonald for receiving the SNZ and Otago District ‘Volunteer of the Year Award’ as

well as Life Membership to the Cromwell Club; acknowledged the Cromwell Club for what they had achieved in adding a third court, hosting the ‘D’ Grade Super Champ Nationals and their achievements on the court of the men’s team winning and the women’s team coming runner up in the event.

o Comment was made of declining membership numbers and the need to address this.

o Commented on the progress being made in the development and upgrade of the Sunnyvale Complex.

o Congratulated all successful players and teams as mentioned throughout the report. Acknowledged the time and effort put in by coaches, selectors, parents and club volunteers who indirectly were responsible for allowing players to enjoy and play our sport.

o Thanked the Dunedin Games Committee and the Central Otago administration & committee for

managing and overseeing the interclub competitions.

o Thanked the Board for their continued effort behind the scenes.

o Lastly thanked Aynsley and Ken Rewcastle (Auditor) for their contribution in 2015.

Financial Report and Statement of Accounts: Stuart Hammer presented a written report for consideration on the financial situation:

Squash Otago Incorporated Year Ending September 2015

Financial Report

For the year ending September 2015, Squash Otago Inc. reports a deficit of $5,421. This was higher than budgeted for with variance being mainly attributed to the decline in competition and development activity revenue. Fortunately the balance sheet is still reasonably strong for a sporting entity with equity at $153,931. Overall, income and expenditure were well managed and were consistent with expectations. As always, Squash Otago Inc. needs to endeavor to have a positive cash flow to ensure that capital is not used to support negative operational costs albeit a challenging year on year exercise. I would like to again thank Aynsley Munro for her commitment and dedication for a well-managed operation and to Ken Rewcastle for his auditor services and advice.

Budget 2016

A draft budget has been completed, and while still to be finalized, it is targeting at least a break even situation or better. Also, and mentioned in previous AGM financial reports, it is important to remember that a sizable level of income is from grants and sponsorship. As always, this financial support is very much appreciated as we strive for sustainable self-generated revenue. Consequently, and as always, it will be necessary to manage revenue and expenditure again next year with the normal diligence that we have been accustomed to. I.S. Hammer December 8th, 2015

Motions & Remits: Life Memberships – Aynsley Munro presented a motion to the meeting that inaugural life memberships of Squash Otago Incorporated should be awarded to the following long-serving members:

o David Small (Omakau) o Neil McDonald (Pirates) o Stuart Hammer (Taieri)

Aynsley read out lengthy resume’s about each nominee which accumulated in a combined contribution to the sport of over 100 years. All three had played the sport for numerous years, worked tirelessly for the sport for even longer having held nearly every position possible in their own clubs, the current association as well as Southern Districts Squash Association before that. Aynsley moved the motion which was seconded by Mark Gribben and passed unanimously. Each recipient then responded accepting the awards with honour before leaving the meeting to have an interview and photo session with the Otago Daily Times. In their absence, the meeting continued. General Business:

o Otago District ‘Open’ – Aynsley explained the confusion over the Otago District ‘Open’/Otago Championships and the Otago Squash Club ‘Open’. It was agreed that the district would organize the tournament and continue to run it at the Otago Squash Club in the immediate future.

o Combined interclub - lengthy discussion took place over combined interclub but it was decided that it

was an area for the Games Committee to adjudicate over. Conclusion: There being no further business, Neil concluded the meeting by thanking everyone for their attendance wishing them a happy Christmas and holiday. The meeting closed at 7.04 pm

Chairman’s Report – 2016

The Board of Squash Otago Incorporated presents the Annual Report for the year ended 30th September 2016. Squash Otago again thanks the Otago Community Trust for their continued support and along with the Bendigo Valley Sports and Charity Foundation, New Zealand Community Trust, The Lion Foundation and The Southern Trust we thank you for helping grow and improve the great game of squash. Thank you also to all the loyal interclub sponsors and those who support squash by way of product and services for our tournament and junior events. I cannot emphasize enough how difficult procuring sponsorship and funding is becoming, so I urge everyone to support our sponsors in every way they can. Congratulations to all the players and teams mentioned in the awards and results section of this Annual Report – well done to you all. Also, a huge thank you to the various coaches, administrators, referees, selectors, parents and volunteers who, indirectly, are responsible for the majority of these achievements and squash events and who enable our game to continue to be played and enjoyed by many. The Otago District got the opportunity to host the NZ Masters Nationals this year, which we accepted. The Otago Squash Club and the Taieri Squash Club were the main clubs associated with hosting and running this big tournament. It was a huge success and my thanks go to all the personnel involved. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it highlighted what fantastic people play and organize our sport as well as giving all those players from up north a good dose of Southern hospitality. Thank you to the Games Committees, both here and in Central Otago, who manage, control and oversee the formal interclub competitions. Again, I cannot thank this person enough and I know I thank her at every opportunity I get, but without a special person like Aynsley Munro our great game would struggle to be the force it currently is. She spends countless unpaid hours (weeks actually!) making sure everything is done correctly and runs smoothly. Thank you Aynsley – we take our hats off to you again. Thank you to the Board of Squash Otago and to our loyal friend, Ken Rewcastle, who diligently does the auditor’s role. Have an enjoyable and safe festive season and see you all in 2017. Executive Officer’s Report

2016 As 2016 comes to an end, I can reflect on a very busy year which seemed to disappear very quickly. As usual being the even year, it was our turn to host the New Zealand Master’s Games and coincidently we finished the year with the New Zealand Master’s Championships. Both tournaments were a huge success and a pleasure to be involved in. In between these two events, there was the South Island Quadrangular and the Otago District ‘Open’ and of course the away events, the Otago Junior ‘Open’ in Alexandra and the South Island Junior Age Group Teams Event held in Canterbury. New Zealand Masters’ Games: Ninety-two players fronted for the New Zealand Master’s Games with grades mainly consisting of 4 player round robins ranging from 35 – 39 age group to 70 plus in the men and 65 plus in the women. It was pleasing to see Barry Wearth (Sydney - gold) return to defend his title with three of his club mates, Roy Daly (Sydney - silver), David Titmarsh (Sydney - silver) & Stephen Creak (Sydney - silver). Another Aussie returning to defend his title was John Scully (Melbourne) who was not so lucky playing in the very strong 70 plus age group which was won by Rod Waugh from Tauranga. Otago District Championships: Next event on the calendar was the Otago District ‘Open’ incorporating the Otago Champs. Finals in the ‘Open’ grades were dominated by the Otago University Club with Tamati Brooks winning in three over Matt Ditchburn and Sophie O’Connell coming out on top over Laura Rogers in four games (reviewed on page 18). Congratulations to all players who succeeded in the 2016 season as well as those that came second. Interclub: As mentioned below by Helen, it was decided to trial mixed interclub this season to try and make for tighter competitions throughout the grades. Although a few initial teething problems, it was on the whole considered to be a very successful with it being agreed to continue that format through the 2017 season. Top Clubs: Congratulations to the Otago University Squash Club for winning the Cableway’s Challenge; the Dunedin area ‘Top Club’ Award and for hosting an excellent Interclub Awards Night made even more special for myself with the surprise awarding of life membership to the Otago University Squash Club. I felt overwhelmed and very humbled to receive such recognition so a very big ‘thank you’ to you all. Congratulations also to the Wanaka Club who seems to have a strangle-hold on the Central Otago ‘Top Club’ award winning it for the third year in a row as well as taking out the Cableway’s Shield from Otago University in a 19 – 16 countback. The current strength of the club shows in how many teams they are fielding in the local interclub competition. Let’s hope it will not be too long until you get the four court complex which is will make such a huge difference to squash in the Wanaka and Central Otago area. Refereeing: Congratulations to Jackie Hamilton from Cromwell Club in winning the 2016 Derek Cook Memorial Trophy for Refereeing which was presented to her at the New Zealand Master’s Individual Championships Prize-giving at Taieri Rugby Football Club in October. Jackie also travelled to Melbourne for the Victorian ‘Open’ in August. This event saw her assessed by John Small (Oceania Assessor) and gain passes towards her Oceania Regional Referee status. She then capped off a great year with completing Regional Requirements at our Nationals. She was presented with her Oceania Shirt at the New Zealand Master’s dinner held at the Dunedin Art Gallery. Well done Jackie.

Sponsors and Funding: As mentioned by Neil earlier in this report, funding is and will continue to get harder to secure. Squash Otago was grateful and appreciative of the continual major funding received from the Otago Community Trust. A huge thank you to the other trusts that supported different projects organized by the District. They were: Bendigo Valley Sports and Charitable Foundation; New Zealand Community Trust and the Lion Foundation. To our loyal interclub, tournament and service sponsors, your tangible contributions all add to make the difference of a sport succeeding. On behalf of Squash Otago and all squash players, I offer our appreciation and thanks. Clubs and Volunteers: I can’t emphasis enough the importance of Clubs and more importantly the members and players running those Clubs. They continue to dedicate a huge amount of their time and expertise to keeping our game alive, not only at club but also district level – a huge thank you to you all. The on-going commitment by new and old members is an essential part of the survival of squash within Otago. 2016 New Zealand Master’s Championships: My comments above about clubs and volunteers could not be more relevant to the recent commitment by the Otago and Taieri Squash Clubs in helping me host the very successful 2016 New Zealand Master’s Individual and Team Championships. To the organizing committee of Anna Bartlett, Justine Dahlenburg & Warren Cox from Taieri and Andy Bryant, Tony Johnston & Don Denniston from Otago a big ‘thank you’ from me, the Board of Squash Otago and all squash players – you were brilliant. To both clubs and members take a bow – the accolades continue to come in. Also, thank you to Tamati Brooks for his help and to the Otago University Squash Club members for stepping in at the last hour when we realized that court space was tight. Personally, I would like to make mention of Rangi Clark, Maxine Massetti and Ngaire Lynch for their continual support to me when staging such events – your efforts were very much appreciated. As should be the case, I learnt a lot about running events during the Masters but overall it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Hopefully we will get the opportunity to put into place the lessons learned when we run our next bigger and brighter National event. New Website: Squash Otago now has a new website and face book page, thanks to Tamati Brooks. If you have any feedback please let us know. We want to make sure our site is easy to use for everyone. Conclusion: In conclusion, to the Dunedin Games Committee and Helen Brownlie (Chair) my thanks for your time and effort for another well- organized season. Dunedin Games Committee Report – 2016

The Dunedin Games Committee continually endeavours to provide good, competitive squash across all grades, to promote squash and to encourage the development of individual players.

Over the past couple of years, the marked decline in the number of squash players in the region has affected the standard of the Dunedin Interclub Competition. A number of club teams have consisted of players with a wide range of abilities, and the lack of depth in some grades has meant considerable juggling of both the teams and divisions to ensure a fair competition.

As a result of this, 2016 saw a major overhaul of the Dunedin Interclub Competition. The men’s and women’s competition was replaced with a mixed competition with 68 teams playing on either a Tuesday or Wednesday night. Despite a few issues with the grading of individual players, the new format has been successful and has produced a more even competition.

Congratulations to the Otago University Squash Club for winning the Top Club of the Year, the 2016 Cableways Club Challenge, runners up (on count back to Wanaka) in the Cableway’s Shield, and for hosting a very successful prize-giving function.

In addition to the organization of the Dunedin Interclub Competition, the Dunedin Games Committee plays an important role as a conduit between the players, the Clubs and Squash Otago. I would like to thank the 2016 Dunedin Games Committee for their commitment to squash both at the Club and District level.

SQUASH OTAGO - 2016 JUNIOR REPORT

2016 was a relatively quiet year for juniors with junior squads reduced to five – 3 in Dunedin and 2 in Central Otago. With squad numbers down and a lack of juniors available for representative selection, concerns over many areas of the development structure are currently being carefully looked at for the 2017 season. The structure as it stands sees clubs nominating juniors that they believe have potential to improve to a level for consideration for Otago Age Group Teams and further. Players are put into squads of similar ability and then a squad coach is allocated. A fee of $50.00 is charged and for this, juniors receive 15 hours of squad coaching with their allocated coach. Selected members are expected to attend squad training sessions and selection tournaments and to make themselves available for selection for teams representing Otago at the South Island Age Group and South Island Quadrangular Teams Event and the NZ Junior Nationals. Well done to all junior players for their progress this year with special mention and congratulations to Martha Toghill (Wanaka) and Caleb Madden (Cromwell) who have been selected for the 2017 Aon Junior Development Squad and 2017 Elite Junior Boy’s Squad respectively. Congratulations to Caleb in winning the Under 17 title; to Martha in coming runner-up to Natalie Sayers (Remuera) in the Under 13 Championships and to Gemma Thompson from Alexandra in winning the Under 11 title at the South Island Junior Age Group Championships held at Squash City in July. Well done to you all - a worthy reward for all your hard work. Team entrants to the 2016 Super Champ District eliminations was once again reduced with only 10 teams entering – 7 men’s teams and 3 women’s. Without Central Otago and the Otago University’s support of this event, local elimination would be a non-event. This is a far cry from the situation of 8 – 10 years ago when we would have 30 plus teams entered. This year the Otago University lead the way by entering four teams followed by Alexandra, Cromwell & Wanaka with two teams each. The lack of Dunedin teams outside of the Varsity Club is very disappointing and doesn’t reflect well when allocation for hosting such events are up for grabs. Of late, various districts have expressed their concern over certain aspects of Super Champs which has led to a committee being set up to address these issues and a paper will be presented as an agenda item at the forthcoming SNZ Forum. Top of Squash Otago’s wish list is consistency of dates when the event is held with finals being held no later than the end of September as was the case in the past. Hopefully any changes that are made will be positive and will encourage participation resembling something like the graded team’s events of old.

2016 Central Otago Squash Report The Six Clubs that make squash happen in our neck of the woods continue to thrive thus contributing to an overall successful season. Congratulations to the Central Otago Triangular Team that took out the 2016 title from Midlands and Otago metro which was hosted by the Omakau Club. Juniors continue to be the beneficiaries of our supportive club members and experienced coaches. Caleb Madden (Cromwell), Martha Toghill (Wanaka), Gemma Thompson (Alexandra) and Soloman Lewis (Alexandra) caught the eye (among others) at a national level as attested to elsewhere in this publication. As usual ‘Top Club’ preceded interclub with this year all six clubs taking part which is a very positive sign. Wanaka was victorious for the third year running and went on to win the Cableway’s Shield over the Otago University Club in a very competitive countback 19 – 16 games. Interclub was contested by 23 teams with the spoils being spread - Cromwell (Premier); Queenstown (Division One) and Omakau (Division two). Wanaka fielded 7 teams , Cromwell 6, Alexandra 4 with 2 each from Omakau, Queenstown and Maniototo. . The Central Otago ‘Open’ Champs were hosted by Cromwell this year with Shaun Madden and Stephanie Chambers taking the respective honours. Major thanks to you Aynsley from all our squash players and administrators for the usual top all round service and support.

The Computer Concepts Limited - Otago District ‘Open’ incorporating the Otago Champs was held at

the Otago Squash Club over the weekend of 27th – 29th May. Entries were consistent with those of the 2015 tournament with ninety-four players making up draws of 3 sixteen men’s; 3 eight women’s; 1 sixteen mixed and 1 six mixed. Our grateful thanks to Daryl Swann of Computer Concepts who once again was our major sponsor and to Brent Davies of the Otago Sports Depot for his continued sponsorship and support of our sport and of all squash clubs in Dunedin. Players from the Otago University Club once again took out both Otago Titles. Top seed Sophie O’Connell defended her efforts of 2015 by beating club mate and 3rd seed Laura Rogers in 4 games. Seedings didn’t mean too much in the men’s draw with 1st and 2nd seeds going out in the semi-finals and first round respectively. Keidah Bungard from Oamaru toughed it out winning 3 – 2 in the first round over 2nd seed Nick Askin who was returning to the game after a lay-off due to back surgery. On the other side of the draw, top seed Mark Fairweather was defeated in the semi-finals by third seed, Tamati Brooks from Otago University. Kediah went down to 7th seed Matt Ditchburn in the other semi-final resulting in an Otago University final between the more experienced Tamati Brooks winning convincingly in three over his younger opponent Matt Ditchburn.

It was pleasing to see our up-in-coming junior, Martha Toghill (11) from Wanaka win the Women’s ‘A’ grade over more mature and much higher graded players and also the tournament entries allowing for all but two draws to be of the same gender. Special thanks to the Otago Squash Club for hosting the tournament as well as providing the necessary man-power and services that are an essential part of making a tournament successful.

South Island Quadrangular Team’s Event

Southland took out the 2016 South Island Quadrangular at the Otago Club over the weekend of 23rd – 24th July accumulating 36 points from Otago in second place on 28 points; Canterbury third with 18 points followed closely by Midlands on 15 points. The Otago Master’s Team of Shaun Madden (Cromwell); Mark Fairweather (Taieri); Ange Button (Otago) & Anna Bartlett (Taieri) won the Master’s title only dropping one match on the way through and our junior team of Caleb Madden (Cromwell); James Baker (Taieri); Olly Johnston (Taieri); Hayley Green (Otago University); Martha Toghill (Wanaka) and Jess Moore (Alexandra) came a creditable second behind a very strong Southland line-up. A big ‘thank you’ to the four Otago players (Lyndal Askin, Shaun Funnell, Laura Moore & Bianca Malcolm) who in the spirit of sportsmanship and for the success of the event, agreed to overlook their parochialism for the weekend and played for a depleted Canterbury team. The Midland’s Team also had an Otago import in Steph Chambers from Wanaka.

South Island Junior Age Group Team’s Event

2016 Otago Junior Age Group Team

The Canterbury Junior Squash Teams were too strong

winning seven golds and one silver of the eight gold

medals available at the South Island Junior Age Groups

Teams Event held at the Christchurch Squash Club

over the weekend of 17th and 18th September. This

achievement also won the district the overall trophy

for best performed district for the first time with

Southland 2nd; Otago 3rd and Midlands in 4th place.

Otago did not field teams in the Under 11 Boys or the

Under 13 Boys and Girls. A new ruling which was

enforced this year didn’t allow districts with two

teams in one age-group to pick up two sets of medals

– thus allowing a couple of Otago teams to pick up

medals at the expense of Canterbury.

The South Island Age Group Teams Event is competed between the four districts in the South Island; Canterbury, Midlands, Otago and Southland. District teams consist of three players of the same age group (U11, U13, U15 & U17) who will compete against other teams of the same age group. Districts may enter more than one team in each age group. A review was held after the completion of the event this year with changes being introduced for the 2017 tournament which will be hosted by Southland. Although the event has been in existence for much longer, the current trophy for overall winner of the event was donated by Squash Otago Inc. and Logan Park Squash Club in 2011.

2016 Highlander Series

Ninety-four juniors played over the four 2016 Junior Highlander Series Tournaments with 28 players eligible for prizes having played all four. Makarewa’s Regan McNaught was the overall winner on 710 points from last year’s winner Logan MacLeod from Gore on 700 points. Third place was shared by Jacob Dudley from Gore and Charlotte Wilde from Sunnyvale on 690 points. The new format of four tournaments; starting Friday instead of Saturday and both districts adding an extra $500.00 for prize money for their respective Junior ‘Opens’ had little effect on the overall number of entries especially those of the more experienced juniors. At a recent meeting between the two districts, it was agreed that the same format will be used for the up-coming 2017 season with a bit of tweaking. The emphasis of the series will be on C1 players and below although the expectation of both districts will be that all juniors vying for representative honours will play their respective Junior Open’s. The following changes will apply for the 2017 series:

No series points for players with gradings higher than C1

A player needs to be C1 and below at the closing date of 1st series tournament to play the series.

Junior ‘Open’s will be selection tournaments for each district

Tournament dates to be spread evenly – one a month

All other rules to remain as for 2016
