Farmington The Farmington CVB tracks and studies Lodger’s Tax on a calendar

year basis by visitors’ month of stay to monitor tourism trends and

visitor behavior. A total of $1,235,719.44 was collected in Lodger’s

Tax by the City of Farmington, in calendar year 2016. This is down

2.15% from 2015, when a total of $1,262,954.97 was collected. 2015

Lodger’s Tax collections were up 3.09% from 2014. The City of

Farmington collected $4,386,305 Gross Receipts Tax under the

Accommodation and Food Services sector, in FY2016. This is a 6.4%

increase over FY2015, and a 15.3% increase over FY2014.

Business travel has long been a staple for Farmington hotels. Several hotels

continued to report a marked decrease in their corporate contracts and

business travelers throughout 2016, which was a continuing trend from 2015.

The New Mexico Tourism Department (NMTD) works with Tourism Economics to

provide a detailed look at tourism throughout the state. Reports show that San

Juan County experienced a 4.9% increase in visitor spending in 2015, with

8.9% of the county’s employment dependent upon tourism.

New Mexico

The New Mexico Tourism Department (NMTD) works with Tourism Economics, an Oxford Economics Company to provide a detailed

annual analysis of the economic impact tourism makes in our state. In July 2016, the NMTD released the results of their 2015

analysis. Overall, 2015 proved to be a strong year for tourism throughout New Mexico.

2015 Impact of Tourism in New Mexico

Tourism generated $629 million in state and local taxes

2.1% Increase in Total Visitors

3.6% Increase in Visitor Spending

2.4% Growth Tourism Employment

United States The tourism industry relies on the Travel Trends Index (TTI) from the U.S. Travel Association (USTA) when reviewing and predicting

leisure, business and international travel. USTA reports U.S. domestic travel increased 1.2% from 2015 to a total of more than 2.2

billion persontrips in 2016. Leisure travel accounted for about 79% of all U.S. domestic travel in 2016. In 2016, domestic and

international travelers spent $990.3 billion in the U.S. This spending supported more than 8.6 million jobs directly, and generated

$248 billion in payroll income and $158 billion in tax revenues for federal, state, and local governments.

Domestic business travel declined marginally (0.6%) in 2016 to 457 million person-trips.

International inbound travelers are estimated to have made 76.8 million visits to the United States in 2016. Due to the slowdown of

the world economy and a stronger U.S. dollar against most of foreign currencies, international travelers spending in the U.S.

continued to decline in 2016.

The Farmington Convention & Visitors Bureau tracks industry trends and statistics in order to make decisions on

marketing strategies. Annual conversion studies are conducted and monthly website analytics are reviewed to

measure performance of specific marketing opportunities and to learn more about our visitor demographics.

In 2016, 71% of visitors surveyed stayed in a Hotel or B&B, 27% stayed in an RV Park and 5% can be classified

as a Family/Friend stay. Results indicate a 2% increase in both Hotel/B&B stays and RV stays over the 2015

conversion study results.

The 2016 Farmington Vacation Guide received an industry nod as a finalist for the New Mexico Hospitality Association's

Top HAT (Hospitality and Tourism) award for 2016 Best Print Campaign. This is proof that the information provided to

visitors, and the way it is organized, is effective and well received.

“I played Civitan golf course with my son yesterday and picked up a copy of the (2016) vacation guide. I just wanted to tell you that it looks

spectacular. The front cover does an excellent job of drawing you in and the adventures listed within keep you reading it. Great job! That is an

Website Performance

The FCVB’s website,

www.FarmingtonNM.org, is a valuable

promotional piece. All marketing efforts, from the Vacation Guide to ad buys, are directed to the website in an effort to

provide valuable information to leisure travelers as well as to capture the analytics and measure performance of brand

messaging and ad performance. In 2016, the Farmington CVB worked to grow content on the website. The Calendar of

Events has been adopted locally as the community calendar and much effort has gone into promoting events that are visitor

friendly, as well as those of local interest. In coordination with XYNERGY, website visitation has continued to grow rapidly

and has proven to meet and perform above the industry standards of a Destination Marketing Organization.

In the spring of 2017, DMA West presented the findings of their yearlong DMO Website and Conversion Study. The DMA West

Education and Research Foundation engaged Destination Analysts, Inc. to conduct the study. Their goal was to assist DMOs

(Destination Marketing Organization) in developing a profile of travelers who use DMO websites and estimate the ROI (Return On

Investment). Thirteen DMO websites participated in the study, providing valuable data and analytics for DMOs, such as the

Farmington Convention & Visitors Bureau.

The Farmington Convention & Visitors Bureau used Facebook, Instagram and Twitter in 2016 to

showcase the recreational opportunities, cultural experiences and historical treasures waiting to be

discovered in the Farmington area. These social media platforms have proven to be ideal for inspiring

travelers and sharing information with locals.

The official Farmington hashtags were launched in early 2015, encouraging locals and visitors to share

images of their Farmington journey with #JoltYourJourney, #LiveFarmington, #WorkFarmington,

#StayFarmington and #PlayFarmington. Over 10,000 positive images of Farmington, and area

attractions, have been shared across social media platforms using the hashtags!

A few words from our friends on social media

“Thank you for the hospitality allot (sic) different then the east. You guys went up and beyond my expectations. I can't thank you enough.” Joe Semanchik, New Jersey (W.E. Rock Championship) “Thank you for the info and all your help! LOL, I didn’t know I could plan a family trip using Facebook.” Kristy Rivas, Albuquerque

Social Media

In 2016, the FCVB hosted the Big Catch Contest to showcase Lake

Farmington as a fishing destination for anglers and to promote the

recent renovations and increased recreational activities. Over the

past two years, this social media based photo contest has evolved

into a successful marketing campaign. The Big Catch Contest drew

interest locally and brought overnight visitors to Farmington from

Cortez, Santa Fe, Gallup and Albuquerque.

In 2016, the Farmington CVB promoted Farmington across radio, television, online and

print mediums. The FCVB targeted specific markets within the states of Arizona,

California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas and Utah. As a result, the Bureau

reports an increase in website visitation, vacation guide requests and social media

engagement in targeted regions.

The 2016 online marketing strategy of the FCVB and advertising agency Griffin &

Associates was recognized statewide as a finalist in the New Mexico Hospitality

Association’s 2016 Top HAT (Hospitality and Tourism) Awards for Best Digital Campaign.

New and Noteworthy Campaigns

The FCVB ran specific campaigns to convert the regional retail market to overnight guests. A special “SeptemberFest” campaign was

created to encourage school shoppers to stay in Farmington as they prepare for the new school year. Members that worked with the

FCVB on this campaign reported an increase in guests.

The Bureau also ran a Holiday Shop, Play & Stay campaign October through December 2016. The Holiday campaign was successful

in the targeted markets and the Bureau plans to continue marketing Farmington as an overnight destination to regional retail shoppers.

In 2016, the FCVB ran a successful billboard strategy utilizing a new digital billboard technology offered by Clear Channel Outdoor.

The FCVB was their first advertiser to launch such a campaign. The billboards ran May to August 2016 and featured six locations in

Albuquerque. The billboards incorporated images from Instagram using the official Farmington hashtags. The campaign drew much

attention and the FCVB received a variety of compliments from statewide industry partners and visitors.

The Farmington CVB’s public relations team works directly with media,

pitching story ideas and responding to inquiries to garner positive

editorial coverage. In working with Griffin & Associates, the Bureau

initiated a new media policy, striving to release at least 12 media

releases a year with a national reach. In 2016, the FCVB issued 27

media releases, assisted 29 media inquires and saw 20 media pieces

published.

Media coverage ranged from Instagram travelogues and blogs to

newspaper and magazine coverage from the likes of National

Geographic, New Mexico Magazine and USA Today. The earned media

from public relation efforts greatly maximizes Farmington’s positive

exposure beyond what the marketing budget can produce on its own.

In June 2016, the Farmington Convention & Visitors Bureau conducted a Media Familiarization Tour (FAM). Over a course of 48 jammed packed hours, the journalists experienced the adventure and culture for which Farmington is known. It’s a delicate balancing act between work and play, as the journalists are reminded of all the activities people can do while visiting Farmington. Media companies that participated represented the following:

Denver Post Dallas Morning News USA Today 10Best Travel and Leisure Magazine AAA NM Journey Westways Magazine Pagosa Daily Post New Mexico Magazine

Activities included: Tour of Kokopelli’s Cave, off-roading in the Glade Run Recreation Area, tour of Artifacts Art Gallery and Studio 116, dinner and a presentation at Hogback Trading Co, also with a fry bread making demonstration, Pueblitos and Rock Art, Bisti Badlands, rafting down the Animas River, golfing at Pinon Hills Golf Course and a guided tour/walk at the Riverside Nature Center, all while experiencing our local hotels and restaurants. This took many FCVB members and partners to pull off and was well worth the long

hours, hard work and preparations! To date, $408,340 of earned media has resulted

from the FAM. With stories running in the Denver Post, Austin Chronicle and a three

day article in Pagosa Daily Post. The biggest result to date was Kokopelli’s Cave

landing on National Geographic’s list of 10 Most Unusual Hotels in the World and

being the only place listed in the United States. In 2017, New Mexico Magazine is

working on three articles, the first will be in their July issue.

work is rarely seen locally. Through the Farmington

The Farmington Convention & Visitors

Bureau partnered with the New Mexico

Hospitality Association in 2016 and

served as the sponsor and beta testing

community for the Visitor Journey A2D

(Arrival to Departure) customer service

program, created by the Visitor

Engagement Academy. The beta

testing, comprised of 24 participants

from tourism/hospitality businesses, as well as other sectors within the community received great feedback and helped

refine the product for roll out. Farmington was able to launch its customized course in May 2016 and by the end of the

year had trained 230 employees.

The Farmington Visitor Journey A2D program has two required elements. First is an Online Class that takes 60-90

minutes to complete that does not have to be done all in one sitting. Next is a Live Class but the Online Class must be

finished and passed with a 75% or higher prior to taking this part. Combined, the classes teach customer service skills

paired with knowledge of all there is to do and see in the area. Community pride is elevated and enthusiasm for the area

is heightened. All of these aspects are vital to a stronger tourism economy because it takes all residents to sell a

destination, create an experience that encourages visitors to make repeat trips and foster a friendly and positive

environment.

Since the Farmington launch, other communities in New Mexico such as Las Cruces, Santa Fe, Gallup and Taos have

signed on to offer this program. The VEA also has it running in parts of New York. To say Farmington, New Mexico was

the first city in the US to offer the Visitor Journey, and do it successfully, is a badge of honor.

With premier trails throughout the area, Farmington is primed to serve as an off-roading mecca to enthusiasts from all over the country. The Farmington CVB has actively supported projects and opportunities to enhance this tourism offering. Starting in 2015, the FCVB organized meetings with local user groups, government entities and BLM personnel that opened up lines of communication that had been broken for quite some time. This positive step has allowed projects in the Glade Run Recreation Area to get underway such as marking trails, supporting existing clean up efforts by user groups and mapping trails. While these efforts are ongoing, the Glade has begun to receive national attention with recognition such as being named the #1 off-road trail system in New Mexico by PartCatalog Magazine. In early 2016, local State Senator Steve Neville introduced Senate Bill 270 to

the New Mexico legislature to allow off-road vehicles on paved streets. The FCVB strongly supported this bill, seeing it as an opportunity to grow tourism in the Farmington area as it would allow off-road vehicles to be able to be driven from hotels to the trail systems instead of being trailered to trail heads. By spreading the message and positive aspects of this bill, and rallying the support base, SB 270 passed in the legislature. Farmington immediately sprang into action to create its laws in alignment with this bill. Further proof of growing off-roading activity is the return of the W.E. Rock Grand Nationals in September 2016. This event has not been in Farmington since 2009, largely due to the lack of support from various entities. The Farmington CVB financially supported the event and also partnered with the CliffHangers 4x4 Club and the Farmington Downtown Association to host a welcoming reception called the Fall Crawl. These efforts resulted in not only a successful 2016 Grand Nationals but the event is returning in 2017. All parties involved want to see it bigger and better this year.

FCVB Director Tonya Stinson serves as the liaison to the New Mexico Film Office for Farmington and San Juan County. In 2015, she was appointed by Governor Martinez to the Governors Council on Media and Film Industries. In 2016, the Farmington CVB, also serving as the San Juan County Film Office, offered the 7 Deadly Sins of Filmmaking workshop taught by Contract Locations Coordinator Don Gray with the New Mexico Film Office. This is part of an ongoing initiative to build a skilled local workforce for the film industry. This will allow locals to be hired when projects occur in San Juan County instead of projects having to hire people from elsewhere. Over 20 people attended this fantastic workshop and the information was very eye opening to all. The New Mexico Film Office has the third largest photo database of any state film office in the country, following Texas and New York. The San Juan County Film Office works to consistently add possible location photos from the county to that database. Over 800 images were submitted to the NMFO in 2016. This is an ongoing process.

2016 FCVB Membership

The Farmington Convention & Visitors Bureau offers membership to local businesses involved in, or supportive of the Farmington

tourism and hospitality industry. The FCVB and members work together to equip visitors with information to best experience all that

the Farmington area has to offer.

Why Join the FCVB?

The Farmington Convention and Visitors Bureau is the first stop for most visitors planning a trip to the area for the first time or

considering a return trip. By becoming a member of the FCVB, you ensure that when visitors call, email or stop by, your company is

referred to them. Members are also recommended to the tour operators, meetings and conventions that we assist.

A few additional advantages of being a Convention & Visitors Bureau member are advertising opportunities, featured website listing on

FarmingtonNM.org, social media promotions, one-on-one Facebook marketing assistance, promotional opportunities via monthly

partner and membership newsletter as well as the monthly visitor e-newsletter and brochure display in the Visitor Center. If you are

interested in promoting your business to area visitors, a membership with the FCVB is a great place to start!
