A Message fromthe EVP & Chief Administrative Ocer
Ruth E. Hennessey
xtraordinary Care, Everyday Miracles, the theme of this year’s Annual Report, speaks to the heart of our hospital’s mission
to provide state-of-the-art care for some of the most complex health needs in our community. Last year, St. Francis
continued to expand and enhance our role as the region’s premier provider of cardiac programs and services, even as it
made important advances in providing patients with the highest quality orthopedic, neurovascular, and cancer care.
St. Francis also continued to earn national acclaim for clinical care, patient safety, and patient satisfaction. Once again, we were
the only hospital on Long Island to be nationally ranked in three adult specialties by U.S. News & World Report, and we were one of
the only hospitals to earn an A grade for patient safety from the Leapfrog Group, and we did so ten out of eleven times in the past five
years. St. Francis also won several PRISM and Beacon awards for nursing excellence, while remaining one of the few hospitals to
have received the top nursing award, Magnet Recognition, three consecutive times. St. Francis also continues to be the top hospital
on Long Island for patient satisfaction, according to a survey published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
In the end, there is no recognition more meaningful than the gratitude of our patients, and in this year’s Annual Report we highlight
several remarkable patient stories that truly live up to the description of “everyday miracles.” These stories reflect the mastery of
state-of-the-art technology, unrivaled clinical skills, and a determination to “never give up” on a patient. They are real-life examples
of who we are and what we do at our best, and how we strive to treat each patient as if he or she is a member of our own family.
The success of St. Francis Hospital’s mission would not be possible without the generosity of our friends, and I am truly grateful
for their support. I would also like to thank the Sisters of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary as well as our physicians, nurses, sta,
and volunteers, for their hard work and commitment to excellence. I would also like to thank Alan D. Guerci, M.D., CHS President
and CEO, for his leadership. Finally, I would like to thank our Bishop, the Most Reverend John Barres, for his spiritual leadership of
Catholic health care on Long Island.

Catholic Health Services of Long Island:
A Message from the President & CEO
Alan D. Guerci, M.D.
atholic Health Services made great strides last year toward achieving its goal to be the preferred health system on Long
Island. Our path has been the pursuit of quality, the delivery of compassionate care, and the prudent stewardship of our
financial resources. I am pleased to report that our eorts were rewarded last year with favorable financial results that
allowed us to invest in sta, new capital projects, and needed clinical programs.
At St. Francis we are opening a new hybrid cardiac OR to accommodate increased volume in our most advanced cardiac
procedures, and we are renovating and upgrading procedural rooms in our cardiac catheterization lab, one of the busiest in the
nation. This past year we also launched a state-of-the-art neurointerventional program that, along with another center opening this
fall at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, is a part of a system eort to provide advanced emergency stroke care to the Long
Island community. Later this year, a new ambulatory surgery center will open its doors at 2200 Northern Blvd. in East Hills, a project
developed in partnership with area physicians.
Our focus on quality continues to be a top priority, and last year we had outstanding results. U.S. News & World Report once
again ranked St. Francis the best hospital on Long Island and one of the fifty best in the nation in Cardiology & Heart Surgery,
Gastroenterology and GI Surgery, and Geriatrics. St. Francis had the distinction of being the only hospital on Long Island to be
nationally ranked by U.S. News in three adult specialties. The Hospital is also one of the select few in the nation to have earned
the coveted Magnet designation for excellence in nursing care three consecutive times.
These achievements are hard won and are the result of a hospital culture that prizes teamwork, attention to detail, and always
putting patients first. In this regard, I am especially grateful to Ruth Hennessey for her leadership in maintaining and enhancing this
culture, and I would like to thank our physicians, nurses, sta, and volunteers for their enduring commitment to excellence. I also
wish to thank the Sisters of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, who are a daily inspiration to all of us. I would like to acknowledge
the support of our benefactors, who make so many things possible, and for the guidance of the CHS Board and its Chair, Salvatore F.
Sodano. Finally, I would like to thank our Bishop, the Most Reverend John Barres, for his spiritual leadership and his commitment to
our vital health care ministry on Long Island.

The John Brancaccio Heart Valve Center
t. Francis Hospital’s Heart Valve Center continues to be one of the busiest centers of its
kind in the Northeast. Its pioneering physicians performed their 1,000th transcatheter
aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in 2016. Demand for the minimally invasive procedure
keeps growing. Led by Co-Directors, George Petrossian, M.D., and Newell Robinson, M.D., initial
research at St. Francis helped win FDA approval of the revolutionary device for patients too elderly
or ill to undergo open-heart surgery. Now, the Center has embarked on the second phase of a major
nationwide study that could expand this life-saving procedure to an even wider range of patients.
Besides oering a one-stop destination for the treatment of aortic valve stenosis, the Center
provides patients with several options for treating mitral valve disease. As a leader in mitral valve
repair and replacement, St. Francis was the first hospital on Long Island to implant the MitraClip, a
catheter-based device for patients with symptomatic degenerative mitral valve regurgitation who
are too high risk for surgery.

IN THEIR 66 YEARS of marriage, Harvey and Rose Zaks have shared many heartfelt moments. But a revolutionary breakthrough in medicine has brought their hearts even closer together. Six months after Rose received a transcatheter aortic valve replacement or TAVR, her husband, Harvey, received the very same minimally invasive device. Under the expert care of George Petrossian, M.D, (right), Newell Robinson, M.D., (left) and Kristin Pasquarello, P.A., both husband and wife are on the road to recovery. The couple hopes that road will take them to Florida to celebrate their 67th anniversary next year.

Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery
t. Francis Hospital’s cardiothoracic surgeons performed 1,375 open-heart
surgeries in 2016. Their highly skilled expertise helped earn the Hospital a
national ranking in Cardiology & Heart Surgery by U.S. News & World Report
for the tenth year in a row. Led by Newell Robinson, M.D., the department welcomed a new
member to its team, Albert C. DiMeo, M.D. Dr. DiMeo was previously Chief of Robotic and
Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport,
Connecticut, and was named one of the Top Doctors of Fairfield County.
The department recently constructed and activated a second hybrid OR, which will enable
cardiac surgeons to work side by side with interventional cardiologists on complex cases,
sparing patients additional anesthesia, and pre-empting the need for being transferred to
another operating room.

Truly “The Heart Center”: St. Francis Hospital prides itself on utilizing state-of-the-art ORs and leading-edge surgical expertise. We recently unveiled a new hybrid OR with the latest technology, which enables cardiothoracic surgeons and interventional cardiologists to work side by side when necessary, compressing the surgical time span, sparing patients additional anesthesia, and pre-empting the need for being transferred to another operating room.

t. Francis Hospital’s Cardiac Cath Lab remains one of the busiest medical facilities of its kind in our region.
Directed by Thomas Pappas, M.D., its physicians performed nearly 11,200 cardiac catheterizations and
peripheral vascular procedures in 2016. The Cath Lab was also the site of several nationwide studies that
could change the face of treating coronary artery disease.
“The St. Francis Cath Lab has become a world leader in advancing the use of novel imaging modalities as a new
standard to gain further insight into coronary artery anatomy,” says Dr. Pappas. “These emerging technologies have
eclipsed the older diagnostic capabilities of coronary angiography alone.”
Led by Chairman of Cardiology Richard Shlofmitz, M.D., major clinical trials include testing drug-eluting stents as
well as investigating orbital artherectomy to clear blocked arteries, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) to get
a better picture of them.
The Cath Lab also launched an exciting new breakthrough for treating stroke patients. Using the Lab’s existing
infrastructure, neurointerventionalists are now performing a state-of-the-art procedure called a thrombectomy
(see page 14).
State-of-the-art intravascular imaging enables
St. Francis doctors to correct arterial blockages
and implant stents with pinpoint precision.

TAMI LAMON considers herself a walking miracle. The 78-year-old avid runner and jewelry
designer was diagnosed with a 99 percent blockage of a major artery, known as the widow
maker. But Richard Shlofmitz, M.D., Chairman of Cardiology, helped Tami avoid open-heart
surgery. Using a high-tech procedure called orbital atherectomy, he was able to clear the
hard-to-reach calcification and implant two stents. “I love him and think he’s the greatest!”
says this grateful patient about her favorite doctor, who also happens to be her husband,
Fred’s, physician. “I’m not jealous,” says Fred. “Thanks to him, I still have my beautiful wife.”

ardiac rhythm abnormalities are a special focus of St. Francis Hospital.
Our Arrhythmia & Pacemaker Center has a proud history of pioneering
new approaches to treating cardiac rhythm abnormalities. We were
among the first in the nation to oer implantable defibrillators and to oer
radiofrequency ablation to cure certain arrhythmias. We helped pioneer the use
of the defibrillator as a tool to prevent an initial sudden cardiac death. These
approaches have led to more permanent cures and improved management of
cardiac rhythm abnormalities.
The volume of electrophysiological cases has increased substantially over the
past two years, warranting the construction of new EP labs at St. Francis Hospital,
due for completion the fourth quarter of 2017.
“The implementation of our new state-of-the-art EP labs will allow us to bring an
even higher level of excellence to the patients we treat,” says Joseph Levine, M.D.,
Director of the Arrhythmia and Pacemaker Center at St. Francis Hospital. “We will
never stop reaching for best-in-class treatment and care.”

Success Combating Heart Failure
he experimental device known as the Barostim neo™ is already being used in Europe to treat
hypertension. It’s now being tested in the
United States in a major nationwide study. St. Francis was
the first hospital in the Northeast to implant the small
device, which inserts under the skin beneath the collar
bone, where a thin wire is implanted on top of the carotid
artery. Using wireless technology, the device is programmed
to stimulate a healthier flow of blood to the heart.
“I’m feeling pretty good,” says the willing research
study participant, who only had to spend one night in the
Hospital for the implant procedure. He continues to work
selling architectural details and looks forward to many more
years of cooking and traveling with his wife of 43 years.
Timothy J. Vittorio, M.S., M.D., the trial’s principal
investigator at St. Francis, recommended the Barostim
to Mr. Amato as a possible long-term solution to his
condition. “There are nearly 500 subjects taking part
in the study, which is projected to take five years. But
if the results prove as positive as we hope, the FDA will
likely discontinue the study and green-light the device for
widespread clinical use.”
Rita Jermyn, M.D., Director of the Center for Advanced
Cardiac Therapeutics at St. Francis, sees several
advances on the horizon. “At St. Francis, we employ
device strategies as well as drug strategies to reduce the
instance of hospitalization for more and more heart failure
patients. We’re on the leading edge of new solutions and
that’s great news for our patients.”
First in Northeast to Get New Device for Controlling Chronic Heart FailureThomas Amato, 68, found himself getting easily fatigued, retaining water, and feeling short of breath. But now, the architectural restorer is breathing a little easier thanks to a minimally invasive device he received at St. Francis Hospital.

Advances in Neuroscience
eurosurgeons and interventional neurologists continued to make advances in their specialties during 2016,
bringing new state-of-the-art approaches to the forefront at St. Francis. Richard Johnson, M.D., Director
of Neurosurgery, introduced a high-tech navigation system for spinal surgery to the Hospital. The recently
incorporated three-dimensional neuronavigation guidance system acts like a GPS for neurosurgeons, allowing them
to see exactly where spinal rods, screws, and cages are being placed. Although almost all hospitals in the metropolitan
area have neuronavigation systems for cranial surgery, St. Francis was the first in the Catholic Health Services system
to extend the tracking system to spinal surgeries.
Neurointerventionalists, a new field of specialists, also brought an innovative approach to treating stroke patients
at St. Francis. Through a small needle puncture in the leg they can thread a catheter into the arteries of the brain,
suctioning out blood clots during a procedure called a thrombectomy, resulting in some amazing recoveries.

Family and friends call Phil Wolhar “the miracle
man.” And his doctor, David T. Parrella, M.D., a
neurointerventionalist, definitely agrees. Phil was
working as a marketing director in an East Hills
Chevrolet dealership when he suddenly collapsed.
A co-worker suspected it was a stroke and called
911. When Phil arrived at St. Francis, doctors
confirmed there was a clot in the artery supplying
his brainstem. Their 49-year-old patient was in
imminent danger of being “locked in” — left totally
paralyzed, only able to move his eyes. With minutes
to spare, Dr. Parrella used a suction device to
remove the clot, resulting in the “Lazarus eect.”
Phil instantly revived and returned to work after
a brief recovery. Despite temporary damage to
his vision, he hopes to soon be back in the
driver’s seat.

When Daniela Maniscalchi and her family first learned she had cancer they were devastated, yet they vowed to get through it with as much positive energy as possible. So they decided to dress up in fun costumes for each successive chemotherapy treatment. They chose a new theme for each visit — from “Christmas in July” to “Crazy Wig Day” to “Pajama Day” to “Stars & Stripes.” The fun got so infectious, the nursing sta would eagerly join in. “Daniela’s energy and enthusiasm was absolutely contagious — captivating the sta and many other patients who joined in on the fun themes,” said Eileen Dwyer, R.N., Nurse Manager at the Cancer Institute. When the 40-year-old Sound Beach woman with Hodgkin’s lymphoma completed her twelfth and final treatment, it was a true celebration for her family as well as the St. Francis medical team, especially her physician, Dilip Patel, M.D., Director, Malignant Hematology. “I didn’t want them to worry about me,” recalls the aspiring social worker. “I tried to keep things light.” For Daniela, the experience was a true continuum of care. She selected St. Francis for her oncology treatments because she had been a cardiac patient at the Hospital years earlier. Now as a cancer survivor, Daniela has a simple message for others struggling to survive: “Stay
strong and do whatever you can to get through it.”
Cancer Care Patient Dresses for Success
Early in 2016, The Cancer Institute at St. Francis Hospital was accredited with commendation by the Commission on Cancer, the highest award possible for a new program . “Our Cancer Institute is maturing rapidly, which is of immense benefit to our patients,” says Bhoomi Mehrotra, M.D., Director of Oncology for St. Francis Hospital and Director of the Cancer Institute. Our multidisciplinary programs include Malignant Hematology, Thoracic Oncology, Gastro-IntestinalOncology, Neuro-Oncology, Breast Cancer, Gynecological Oncology, and the treatment of other solid tumors. Recently, we’ve welcomed our new Division of Radiation Oncology to the Cancer Institute. Support services include oncological pharmacy, pathology, andlaboratory services; imaging services;nutrition counseling; social workersupport; clinical navigation; geneticcounseling; pastoral care; psychologicalsupport programs; screening programs;plus survivorship and palliative careservices. Our services and leadership in community activities have been recognized by many organizations, including the American Cancer Society. St. Francis Hospital has also initiated a Cardio-Oncology clinical and research program to evaluate the eects of cancer therapies on the heart.

Orthopedic Surgery
he Department of Orthopedic Surgery continues to be one
of the highest volume surgical programs of its kind on Long
Island, and one of the leading non-cardiac specialties at St.
Francis. The program is nationally and regionally ranked, with surgeons
setting new strides for orthopedic care, including leading-edge surgical
care in total hip, knee, and ankle replacements. Their surgical expertise
also extended to intricate hand, elbow, and shoulder procedures. In
2016, the Hospital named Richard D’Agostino, M.D., Chairman of its new
Department of Orthopedic Surgery, after 20 years of division status. The
highly regarded orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine expert looks
forward to further enhancing his department’s services in 2017.
When Frank Osman took a slip and fall on black ice, the impact was so intense his hip
socket dislocated, with his femoral head hitting his pelvis like a billiard cue. As shattering
as it was, Frank says his doctor, Hamid Mostafavi, M.D., put him back together again. The
highly skilled surgeon is one of a handful of physicians who are trained to treat orthope-
dic trauma. Using two long plates fastened with multiple screws, Dr. Mostafavi helped his
patient avoid hip replacement surgery in what he describes as “not your typical case.”
Just months after taking the painful spill, the 74-year-old certified public accountant was
back on his feet. “It’s so gratifying to see Frank walking and makes all my years of medical
training well worth it,” says Dr. Mostafavi. “He went back to work and hasn’t missed
a beat.”

RISM Award In November of 2016, the 1 East Nursing Unit at St. Francis Hospital received the prestigious
PRISM award for exemplary nursing practice from the Academy of Medical–Surgical Nurses (AMSN) and the
Medical–Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB). PRISM, which stands for Premier Recognition in the
Specialty of Med–Surg, is the first award of its kind honoring med-surg nursing units in the United States. Three other
nursing units at St. Francis — 2 West, 2 East, 1 West — had already been honored with the award, so that brings the total
number of PRISM awards to four.
In the entire United States, only 19 medical surgical units currently hold PRISM awards. St. Francis is the only
hospital in New York State to have achieved PRISM status and the only one in the country that has four units that hold
this prestigious recognition.
Beacon Award Also in November of 2016, The American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) gave the
Beacon Gold Award to the Intermediate Care Unit (3E) at St. Francis Hospital. This recognition for nursing excellence
brings the total number of Beacon Awards to five for the Hospital. Other care units includes the Cardiac Cath
Lab/Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU) and Medical Intensive Care Unit 2 (MICU2), both of which received a Silver-level
Beacon Award. Two intensive care units, CTICU and SICU, hold Gold-level distinctions.
The Beacon Award for Excellence recognizes unit caregivers who successfully improve patient outcomes and align
their practices with the AACN’s six Healthy Work Environment Standards. Nursing units that achieve this recognition
meet national criteria consistent with Magnet Recognition, the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, and the
National Quality Healthcare Award.

A Global Initiative: St. Francis Hospital’s outreach eorts aect not only nearby communities, but are beneficial worldwide. Through its partnership with the Gift of Life, children from across the globe receive life-saving heart procedures. Erblin Sllamniku, a six-year-old boy from Kosovo, recently reaped the benefits. Erblin suered from Patent Ductus Arteriosus or PDA, a congenital heart defect that made him too tired to play like most children his age. Sean Levchuck, M.D., Chairman of Pediatric Cardiology, donated his services and repaired the hole in the little boy’s heart. The results had a major impact on students from St. Anthony’s High School, who helped sponsor the child and witnessed the procedure firsthand. It was a real-life lesson they’ll never forgot.

Research and Cardiac Imaging
ane Cao, M.D., Director of Research and Cardiac
Imaging, talks about the vision guiding St. Francis
Hospital’s research strategy. “We’re working to
create an institution-wide research community. Certainly, the
Research and Education Department provides the structure
that undergirds the Hospital’s many research projects, but an
equally important role for us is to foster a culture of collab-
oration across all areas. We have many subspecialties at St.
Francis — non-invasive cardiology, interventional cardiology,
electrophysiology, heart failure, cardiovascular surgery, and
now the new cardio-oncology program, and so forth. There
might be dierent tools for each subspecialty, but we share a
common interest in research, which is to better understand
the cardiovascular pathophysiology. By collaborating among
departments and subspecialties we magnify our ability to increase our knowledge base
and augment our research productivity, ultimately producing better outcomes for our
patients.”
Liz Haag, RN, Administrative Director for Research, puts it more succinctly. “I can
sum up the research strategy in one word: integration. We are breaking down the walls
between the various departments where research is concerned. That’s producing much
more collaboration among groups, which is very positive.”
By the end of 2016, St. Francis Hospital’s Research and Education Department was
managing 110 active studies, with another 30 ready for initiation early in 2017. Clinical
trials make up about 40% of that portfolio; most of these are
multi-centered, which is to say, St. Francis is not the only
participant. The other 60% are termed investigator initiated
studies, in which a physician at St. Francis takes the lead.
“Over the past year we’ve definitely upped our game for securing
funding from The National Institute of Health,” notes Dr. Cao. “The
NIH will fund certain research projects if you can make a compelling
case for doing so. We’re doing very well with that, which is a huge
win for St. Francis. It reflects a federal agency’s recognition of us as
a major research institution.”
The focus on collaboration is not limited to departments within our
Hospital. It extends to collaborations with other research centers,
both nationally and internationally. “For instance, in the
interventional area, we have a great deal of collaboration with the
Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF),” says Dr. Cao. “On the non-invasive side, we
have a great deal of collaboration with Cedars Sinai Medical Center in LA, with their MRI and
CT studies. Together, we have acquired a large grant to fund our continued imaging research.”
The recent additions of Allen Jeremias, M.D., Director of Interventional Cardiology
Research, and Rita Jermyn,M.D., Director of the Center for Advanced Cardiac Therapeutics,
are expanding St. Francis Hospital’s research portfolio all the more. “We are forging greater
collaboration among our non-invasive, heart failure, and interventional services,” says
Haag. “The intermingling of each service allows for a truly integrated research community.
That’s going to make for major strides going forward.”

Chairman of Cardiology, Richard A. Shlofmitz, M.D., served
as course director for Intravascular Coronary Imaging &
Physiology 2017, a two-day event that took place April 21
and 22 at the Lotte New York Palace. The conference drew
renowned physicians from four continents.
A conference highlight was a series of live telecasts from the
Cardiac Cath Lab at St. Francis, oering attendees the ability
to witness live catheterizations, narrated by Dr. Shlofmitz as
he performed them.
“The conference really covered every aspect of intravascular
imaging,” he commented. “Our physician attendees all got a
very good sense of all the cutting-edge imaging modalities
we’re making use of here at St. Francis. That includes optical
coherence tomography (OCT), intravascular ultrasound
(IVUS), and fractional flow reserve (FFR).”
Although the technology St. Francis uses is certainly
ground-breaking, most physicians are not yet using it. “They
don’t yet know how,” Dr. Shlofmitz observed, “which is why we
wanted to sponsor the conference; it’s a way of educating our
colleagues, sharing our knowledge.” To put that in context,
OCT is currently used by only 2% of interventional
cardiologists around the world; both IVUS and FFR are
presently used by approximately 12% each.
An Illuminating Conference
All-Star Cast: Jerey Moses, M.D., and Richard Shlofmitz, M.D., perform a cardiac catheterization at St. Francis Hospital, which is telecast live to over 200 conference attendees in New York City. A number of St. Francis cardiologists served as panelists and speakers at the international conference, including Andrew Berke, M.D.; Jane Cao, M.D.; Andrew Lituchy, M.D.; Allen Jeremias, M.D.; Thomas Pappas, M.D.; George Petrossian, M.D.; and Newell Robinson, M.D.

ne patient’s gratitude may be the next patient’s miracle. That’s because at
St. Francis Hospital, a philanthropic gift from one grateful patient will help
ensure that the future needs of many other patients are met.
In 2016, more than $22.8 million in support was received by the St. Francis Hospital
Foundation from grateful patients and others in the community who are inspired to
support the extraordinary work of the Hospital’s caregivers. Philanthropic support
included a $9.5 million gift from the Fred and Nancy DeMatteis Charitable Trust.
As a result, St. Francis Hospital moved forward with plans to build a second hybrid
operating room and invest in the latest technology for the Cardiac Catheterization Labs.
At the Cancer Institute, where a capital campaign has helped build a new Infusion Center
and Radiation Oncology Center, total giving reached the $28 million mark at the end of
three years, far ahead of schedule for the five-year $30 million campaign.

Volunteering for Compassion
t. Francis Hospital has a reputation for excellence as well as for compassion.
Patients and visitors see and experience this the moment they enter our lobby.
A good part of the Hospital’s personality is generated by our many volunteers
— over 400 — who give so freely of themselves, assisting in most every area of the
Hospital, from the information desks to the gift shop to the transporting of patients.
Each year we honor these dedicated men and women at an awards luncheon.
This past year, longtime volunteer Rose Repke increased her visibility, quite literally.
She participated in a photo shoot, which ultimately yielded 2016’s accolades banner,
displaying St. Francis Hospital’s many honors and accreditations. Her picture is seen
throughout the Hospital and its various campuses.
In addition, Rose was honored by the Town of North Hempstead by being selected for
their 24th Women’s Roll of Honor, a recognition of residents who have done much to
improve the well-being of the community.
“Rose is one-of-a-kind,” says Kimberley Arlotta, Director of Volunteer Services at
St. Francis. “She brings warmth and compassion to every patient situation. She is the
perfect ambassador for our great Hospital.”
