PRESIDENT’S REPORT The second half of the biennium for the Club’s current executive began in mid 2015. The beginning of this period saw the club fill the long-standing vacancy of Vice President position, with Patricia Dent appointed to take on the role. I am very appreciative of Patricia volunteering for the role and her willingness to step up to the President position after only 12 months as Vice President. The Club Executive for 2015/16 is: President Sandy Nicholson Vice President Patricia Dent Secretary Karen Low Treasurer Maggi Gregory Board member Pru Blackwell Other club members for all or part of 2015/16 are: Val Mew Naomi Reschke Dagmar Bevan Robyn Ruchel Robyn Arnold Lina Cianci Denise Costin Chris Frick Carmen Gurd Robyn Evans Wendy Randell We were fortunate in gaining three new members in this period; Carmen Gurd in October 2015, Robyn Evans in November 2015 and Wendy Randell, inducted at our AGM in April 2016. I warmly welcome all three women to our club. One member has chosen not to continue her membership in 2016 as she had moved away from Gawler; Dagmar Bevan. Dagmar was our Treasurer during the previous biennium and I thank her for her commitment to Zonta, her enthusiasm and support of Zonta projects and wish her well in the future. We have two D23 representatives in our Club - Pru Blackwell, Membership Committee and Naomi Reschke, Chair of the Advocacy Committee and D23 Conference Committee Member. Additionally, Maggi Gregory is the Treasurer and Board Director of the Birthing Kit Foundation (Australia). With this being my last year as President and with the Executive handing over to other members in June, I wish to thank all members of the Club for their dedication and enthusiasm for Zonta and the projects of our Club. I particularly wish to thank the executive and board members for their guidance and support and for taking full responsibility for their roles. We are a small club yet we manage to achieve great things.

Planning

Our January 2016 Planning Day are now confident that we will generate the administrative funds we need for the Club. Of significance, we have changed our meeting venue to the home of Devine Dining, the catering business of Christine Andrews. Chris has supported us in many events in the past few years and provides a great venue with better member access and the food really is ‘devine’.

REPORTS ON OUR ACHIEVEMENTS Birthing Kits Led by Maggi Gregory The Birthing Kit Foundation (Australia) has been established to deliver a sustainable birthing kit model to some thirty overseas countries in the Asia Pacific region and Africa, to contribute to the improvement of maternal and infant health. Generally, about 140,000 kits are assembled annually in Australia for distribution. In 2015, we held two assembly nights. Club members met at the Zion Lutheran Church Hall to assemble 200 birthing kits. The second assembly night was held in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Gawler Light where another 200 kits were assembled. The Rotary Club of Gawler Light has indicated they would be keen to repeat the event in 2016.

_________________________________________ Emergency kits Led by Karen Low and Lina Cianci. Kits containing emergency toiletries are provided to local public schools to be distributed to girls in need. Generally 30 bags are produced each year and distributed evenly between the schools. The counsellors at the schools gratefully accepted the Emergency Kits and several parents have also expressed their thanks. The 2016 bags are now ready for distribution. We were lucky to have received a $1000 donation this biennium from Bluelight for this project.

The annual planning day was held in January 2016 and began with recognition of the Club’s achievements for the 2015 calendar year. We spent the day celebrating our achievements, deciding on projects and events for 2016, allocating responsibilities to Club members, and budgeting for projects and events. Our achievements since July 2015 will be detailed later in this report. This year also generated a lively discussion about raising administrative funds. This has been an area of concern for a little while and we are

Breast Care cushions Led by Robyn Ruchel The Zonta Breast Care cushions provide comfort to women (and men) in the post-operative phase of breast surgery. Cushions are supplied to most hospitals in each Area and distributed by Breast Care Nurses. The feedback received from recipients has been positive, with one woman noting that receiving the cushion was a turning point for her in helping to change her outlook and feel more positive. We’ve been approached by several women when we display them at community events and our fundraisers because they have either used one or know of someone who has. The feedback is always positive.

This D23 service project is strongly supported by Club members. Breast cushions are made by Club members with the support of other community volunteers and are supplied to local hospitals and individuals who request them, either locally or interstate. In the past 12 months, 77 cushions have been supplied to Lyell McEwen Hospital pre admissions clinic, 5 to Calvary Cancer Centre, Elizabeth Vale, 5 to Zonta Club of Darwin and 1 to

Lina, Val and Robyn at a stuff’n’sew night a local individual. Fabric and wadding comprises the bulk of our budget, with fabric for the last 12 months costing $114.43. We still had supplies of wadding, elastic, wrapping & tags from the previous year. This year we also had a substantial donation of various fabrics, which enabled us to make approximately an extra 30 cushions.

Domestic Violence Strategy The Zonta Club of Gawler has developed and implemented a number of strategies in service and advocacy to address the issue of Family and Domestic Violence. Zonta International encourages all clubs to implement service and advocacy initiatives. Zonta International defines advocacy as:

the expression of support for or opposition to a cause, argument or proposal. Advocacy may include influencing laws, legislation or attitudes. Zonta advocacy is an action taken in “the public interest” or for “the greater good” with respect to advancing the status of women and girls and their human rights

Say No to Violence Strategy April 2015 – March 2016 Led by Pru Blackwell Zonta Gawler, having already built a strong relationship with the Mayor of Gawler (the first female elected Mayor in Gawler’s 132 years of local government) directly met with her to advocate for the establishment of an integrated community service commitment to family and domestic violence. This approach was endorsed by the Club at its April 2015 meeting and that its previous activities in saying No to Violence would be sustained within an integrated approach with other service providers in Gawler. 2015 was potentially poised as a year in which family and domestic violence would be more publicly profiled than ever before and that we ought to establish a Domestic Violence and Family Violence prevention approach for Gawler with an integrated service group. The key planks of the Strategy for the year were:

• Building a violence prevention framework with other service providers • Providing Boxes of Love • Showcasing the “Walk In my Shoes” project • Delivering a “Girls in Education” program

Building a violence prevention framework with other service providers

Some of the attendees at the first DV Forum Each of the Forums realized a strong willingness to develop a range of violence prevention programs in the Gawler wide area and to seek external funding to assist that. A grant application to the federal Government’s Building Stronger Communities for Women was unsuccessful. An integrated steering committee has re convened in March 2016 to seek out further funding and to work towards establishing a Gawler Family and Domestic Violence Network.

A planning group was established consisting of Zonta, the Town of Gawler and Regional Development Australia Barossa, (RDA). Concurrently, the local press was running some lead up stories around family and domestic violence with the Northern Domestic Violence Service (NDVS) and was very willing to promote our upcoming Forums. The RDA facilitated two Forums, which were well attended by Club members and representatives from health, education, DV service industry, SAPOL, local government and interested local people. They were held on July 1st and August 12th 2015.

Showcasing the “Walk In my Shoes” project Arranged by Pru Blackwell Leading up to Christmas and the New Year, the “Walk in my Shoes” display was set up in the Gawler Health Services foyer. It was a static display consisting of domestic violence survivor storybooks, information about Zonta and domestic violence support services. All survivor storybooks and significant numbers of pamphlets on support service information were taken by interested visitors to the display. Implementing a “Girls in Education” program with a focus on respectful relationships. Led by Naomi Reschke A Preventative and Supportive programme for year 7 and Year 8 girls at Gawler and District College was implemented in 2015. The programme focussed on interactive workshops, which aimed to support girls to develop and maintain safe and respectful relationships with the ultimate goal of contributing to the prevention of violence against women by:

• Raising awareness about unequal gender and power relations and options for accessing help.

• Deconstructing attitudes that are based on inequality. • Building skills to negotiate non-violence and respectful relationships.

The programme was interactive and worked with single gender groups of boys and girls and included looking at respect, effective communication, taking action against disrespectful behaviour and the impact of choices in relationships.

A presentation following the Girls in Education programme at Gawler and District College, where Tony Piccolo MP, centre, spoke about the importance of respect for self. The programme will continue in 2016 in collaboration with the Gawler and District College and with further support from the Zonta Club of Gawler.

Participants completed evaluation forms at the end of the programme. Facilitators evaluated the effectiveness of the programme with regards to participant satisfaction, engagement and understandings. All students were engaged in the workshops and made positive comments about the content. Staff involved in the programme will continue to programme and reinforce the learnings as part of the general wellbeing programme at the site.

Providing Boxes of Love – Service Project Led by Chris Frick Zonta Gawler’s Family and Domestic Violence Strategy included developing Boxes of Love for women victims of family violence who have fled their homes. The Boxes of Love have been intended to provide women with toiletries and some small “luxuries” for which many victims have little money to buy or which can’t be gathered when leaving their homes for safer destinations. A Club budgetary amount of $1,000 was allocated in October 2015, with $500 provided as a float to construct the boxes as needed. In December 2015 the Town of Gawler awarded a $1,000 grant for the project. Statistics from NDVS indicated that at least 200 women would require the service in the financial year. Original costings of $20.00 per box meant the project would only succeed if donations were obtained. Almost immediately after the project commenced, donations were received from Gawler Dental Clinic, ADRA Parafield, Priceline Pharmacy Munno Para and members of the public. NDVS also provide substantial supplies that were donated through their office. In December 2015, NDVS requested Zonta to consider providing toiletries for babies. This is a much more expensive exercise; however it was agreed by the club to support this within the existing budgetary allocation. To differentiate the baby supplies from the Boxes of Love they are referred to as Baby Bags. Because of the substantial donations received there currently is very little expenditure required for the Boxes of Love, and it is anticipated that the Baby Bags will be funded this calendar year. Deliveries to NDVS since inception of the project in October have been 18 Boxes of Love and 5 Baby Bags. An exact cost per Box or Bag is not possible as many items have been donated and funds have been expended during sales for future needs. The project has currently spent $482.70, with $517.30 cash in hand. There is a requirement to spend the $1,000 grant plus an equal input from the club in funds or donations. It is expected that this commitment can be met by the continued inclusion of the Baby Bags. Feedback from the NDVS worker is that the women are very happy when they receive the attractively presented gift from Zonta and friends. This project won the Town of Gawler Australia Day Community Group of the Year 2016 Award in Janurary 2016 (see photo front cover).

Area Workshops and District Conference

At the A2 Workshop from L to R: Gawler Zontians Chris Frick, Dagmar Bevan, Pru Blackwell and Robyn Arnold.

At the Leadership Workshop, held in June 2015, Pru Blackwell co-operated with representatives from other Clubs planning the workshop program and delivered a presentation on strategic planning. The District 23 Conference was held at the Grand Chancellor Hotel in Adelaide, October 2015. Naomi Reschke was responsible for the programme, which included the overall format for the three days, and guest speakers. The conference was a success and members who attended gained significantly from the programme with further insights into the organisation at the District and International level. Pru Blackwell was the MC and there was a large Gawler Club membership in attendance.

_________________________________________ Fundraising Led by Patricia Dent with the support of Lina Cianci, Denise Costin, Chris Frick The Fundraising Committee worked very hard to raise funds for various projects in the past year. We began the year with an Easter Raffle, followed by a Mothers’ Day Raffle and both went well, thanks to the members for selling the tickets. August saw the High Tea and Antique Appraisal, the first we had tried, and it was most successful, held in the Gawler Institute. Fortunately we had the experienced Appraiser Lachlan Marshall, from the Antique Rooms at Stepney, who gave his time freely to the Club. We thank him so much, I know quite a few were very happy with their results. Liz Musico from the Lingerie Shop, and Diane from Harriets both displayed their goods for sale, which added to the profit on the evening. The SALA Art Festival was being held at the same time, which provided extra interest for those who came. Chris Andrews of Devine Dining catered for the Event and donated her time along with a few helpers. Jade Kirby organised her school band from Strathmont High, to come along and entertain for a few hours. During the District 23 Conference, Harrietts came along and raised funds for the Gawler Zonta Club, this proved very successful.

The Area 2 Workshop in May 2015 was co-hosted with Para District Club with Sandy Nicholson being the coordinator for the Gawler Club. The workshop was held at the Manor Inn, Gepps Cross and was well supported by the Gawler membership. The Gawler Club was visible on the day with Sandy Nicholson as MC, Pru Blackwell delivering a presentation on membership and Naomi Reschke, as the D23 Advocacy Chairman presenting on Advocacy. All members were encouraged to think about supporting women within the community by actively advocating for change to improve the status of women.

October was busy with The Masquerade Quiz Night held in the Gawler Institute. The committee rallied and wrapped prizes and table decorations making it a fun social evening as well. Thanks ladies. The Quiz was a good fun night, including a silent auction, lucky dip which proved to be a lot of fun. We thank Adrian and Michael our Quiz Masters for all their experience and time they put into the evening. There were various Zonta Displays for the guests to look at and proved very successful with donations being made. Members made donations, as did the Kingsford Hotel, Priceline and The Sanctuary Hair and Beauty. There was a prize for the Best Masks and the Winning 3 Tables. We had another raffle, which extended to Christmas, and also sold tickets at the Village Fair held in November. Magazines and Books were also sold at the Village Fair, showing again our Projects. The Raffle was drawn the weekend before Christmas. Tickets were on sale at Dean St Chiropractic Centre, and the Sanctuary, which gave us more income. I would like to thank all the committee and the Zontians for their part in this successful Fundraising year. Our sponsors during the year were: Kingsford Hotel Devine Dining Priceline Pharmacy Munno Para The Town of Gawler Harrietts Liz Musico Lachlan Marshall – The Antique Showrooms The Sanctuary Hair & Beauty Jade Kirby and the Strathmont School Band Dean St Chiropractic Centre Office of Tony Piccolo MP The Bunyip

_________________________________________ Media presence for Zonta Gawler Led by Pru Blackwell The Club continues to have great support from the Bunyip newspaper. It especially thanks the following journalists and Editor who willingly follow up a range of our events and stories where ever possible. The Bunyip has significantly increased individual members and the Club’s profile. The journalists are: Carl Pfeiffer, Amelia Dawkins, Rob McLean (editor) and Kimberley Pratt. As part of the promotion for the Family and Domestic Violence Forums in July and August 2015 Naomi Reschke and Pru Blackwell were interviewed by BBBfm 89.1 Barossa radio. Pru Blackwell was interviewed by Radio Adelaide. Erica Majba, D23 Governor organised D23 Area 2 co-ordinated interviews around work that Clubs have undertaken to further the Zonta Says No to Violence program. Pru outlined the Club’s Family and Domestic Violence Strategy and its outcomes to date. This recording and other examples from other Area 2 Clubs has been stored for future use as examples of good practice.

These plans have highlighted the need to come up with ideas on raising funds for Club administration. Currently, we swap books at meetings for a gold coin donation and we recently took on an idea from another club where we individually collect our 5c pieces during the month and donate them at the meeting.

COMMUNITY EVENTS The Zonta Club of Gawler is also involved in local events where we work closely with other service clubs for the benefit of the community. Some of these events also give us an opportunity to be involved in ways that are not the usual Zonta business yet allow us to honour the commitment other volunteer groups make to the community. Gawler Australia Day Breakfast

_________________________________________ Gawler International Women’s Day; 8th March 2016 Pru Blackwell Chairs the Gawler IWD Committee with Maggi Gregory as Treasurer, Naomi Reschke, Sandy Nicholson and Karen Low as committee members. The Zonta Club of Gawler has again been heavily involved in this event which has been developed by an inter community service group over the last ten years. Zonta Gawler is proud to work alongside the Girl Guides, CWA Gawler, the View Club, Gawler Health Service GASWAGS group and the Town of Gawler to present the event. As usual there was a lot of support for raffles and materials from local businesses for which this event is always extremely grateful. This year the committee repeated last year’s successful breakfast function and held the event on the actual IWD date. We also continued with the awarding of cheques to senior girls from the three local high schools, who would otherwise be at risk of leaving school without the financial assistance.

Led by the local Apex Club, local service clubs combine on Australia Day to serve breakfast to the community. Serving of pancakes, jam and cream has been our role for the past few years and again, our club was well represented at this event with (pictured left) Naomi Reschke, Val Mew, Patricia Dent, Karen Low, Maggi Gregory, Sandy Nicholson, Chris Frick and Dagmar Bevan (not in photo). This event is an opportunity for the Town of Gawler to show local community gratitude by awarding individuals and groups with Australia Day recognition. This year we were extremely honoured to be awarded the Gawler Community Group of the Year for 2016.

The breakfast attracted 92 people and was held at the newly renovated Gawler Greyhound Clubrooms. The Mayor of the Town of Gawler, Karen Redman attended, as did Mr Nick Champion MP, Tony Piccolo MP, and the Hon John Dawkins MLC. Their spirited support was reflected in the generosity of their time present at the event.  Mandy Macky was the guest speaker this year. She is the Director of Dymocks Books and is the past South Australian State Commissioner and Australian Chief Commissioner of Girl Guides and spoke about her experiences in each of these roles. Accompanying her was Rebecca Kimlin and Aunty May Turner, who are both indigenous women and who are very active in supporting their respective communities. Rebecca is a community development worker in Gawler Health Service. Aunty May Turner gave the Kaurna welcome to open the breakfast. The MC for the morning was Ms Anneka Deaton from RAAF Edinburgh.  Pru Blackwell has handed over the role of Chair to the representative from GASWAGS. The other Zonta members will remain on the Gawler IWD Committee.

_________________________________________ Blaze Aid – Pinery Fire – Roseworthy Camp This year, we were invited to prepare, serve and share dinner with the Blaze Aid volunteers who are helping the community recover from the Pinery fire. The Blaze Aid group have been working out of the Roseworthy Campus The routine was to provide a two-course meal (of our choosing), serve the volunteers then join them for dinner and chat with them. Each evening was a lovely opportunity for us to learn about the Blaze Aid volunteers – many of them come from interstate, and for them to learn about us. We catered for between 20 – 35 people on three evenings, 15th Feb, 5th and 22nd Mar with most Club members available to cook on at least one of these evenings. They were fabulous hosts and were very appreciative of our varied and sumptuous dinners. The Blaze Aid volunteers do a great job of clearing burnt fences and then rebuilding them, saving the farm owners many hours of work. It was an honour to provide meals for these people and hear their stories.

Other involvement As if all that isn’t enough, some members also have further responsibilities within Zonta and related organizations. We have two club members who sit on District 23 Committees. Naomi Reschke is the Chair of the Advocacy Committee and Pru Blackwell is on the Membership Committee. Zonta International is closely linked with the Birthing Kit Foundation (Australia) and Maggi Gregory is the Treasurer and a Director of that board.

_________________________________________ Collaboration and support As mentioned earlier in this report, we are a relatively small Club of 15 members. Despite this, I believe we achieve a great deal. That cannot happen without the support of individuals and groups in our community. On behalf of all Club members, I would like to acknowledge the support of the following community groups and individuals and offer our sincere thanks. Without this support, we would not be able to achieve so much. For our monthly meetings, we have enjoyed the support of Café Nova, who provided us with our meeting room for the past three years. We now have the support of Christine Andrews of Devine Dining who has opened up her function room for our meetings and planning days and serves us the most ‘devine’ food. Our DV service projects have been wonderfully supported by the local community and, without their work, the projects would not have been so well integrated in the Gawler community. Thanks go to Linda Weiss from the Town of Gawler, Rhonda Smedley from the Hewett Community Centre, Julie Felus and Elaine Lloyd of the Northern Domestic Violence Service. Fundraising also requires a great deal of input from the community, either through the donation of raffle prizes, time and energy to help set up and decorate events, catering, arranging ‘stuff’ and these sponsors are listed in the Fundraising section. Annette formerly of Helium House regularly provided us with decorating items for our functions and fundraisers before she sold her business and we cannot thank her enough for her support. Particular thanks to the Mayor of the Town of Gawler, Karen Redman, who is a committed supporter of our Club. Also to, Tony Piccolo, MP, a long standing supporter of our Club, who provides display space for our events in his office window as well as printing support. Additionally, we also wish to thank all those who come along to our events, and buy our raffle tickets. Last but not least, I’d like to thank all the spouses, kids, extended families, and close friends of our Club members, who are very supportive of our involvement in Zonta, are happy to lend us a hand and do not begrudge the time we spend honouring our Zonta commitment.

Account Balances to carry forward for 2016 Zonta Club of Gawler: Holding Funds: Treasurer’s Comments: Overall this year has been financially successful. We worked within our budget and used some of the surplus funds that were carried forward from the previous year for our district and local projects. We applied for, and were successful getting a Grant from the Town of Gawler Council to help fund the new Boxes of Love Project. As expected, the final result for year ended 2016 was a deficit of -$1,828.26. The surplus funds to carry forward in the Fundraising account are $4,114.11. However, some of these funds are committed to our ongoing community projects. The Fundraising Committee has worked well again this year with 2 very successful events as well as various raffles. We participated again in the People’s Choice Community Lottery. This allowed the Club to distribute funds to existing District and Local community projects as per the budget set at the Planning day. Funding was also allocated/donated to:

• $1,515  to  ZI  Foundation  • $1,000  was  allocated  to  a  new  social  justice  program  called  Boxes  of  Love  • $     200   donated   to   the   Craft   &  Hope   Group   for   the  Days   for   Girls   International

In Closing As I finish up my time as President, I wish to thank all the members of the Zonta Club of Gawler. This past two years has been an enormous learning curve for me and I have relied heavily on the support of all members, particularly those who have been Zontians for some time and those who have shared their additional knowledge gained from their District positions. Everyone gives freely of their time, expertise, money and energy to make a difference to our local community, nationally and internationally. In meeting monthly and working together on Zonta projects, we aim to meet the Zonta International Objects and Vision. ZONTA OBJECTS:

To improve the legal, political, economic, educational, health and professional status of women at the global and local level through service and advocacy.

To work for the advancement of understanding, goodwill and peace through a

world fellowship of members. To promote justice and universal respect for human rights and fundamental

freedoms.

To be united internationally to foster high ethical standards, to implement service programs, and to provide mutual support and fellowship for members who serve their communities, their nations and the world.

Zonta International, its districts and its clubs are nonsectarian and nonpartisan. ZONTA VISION Zonta International envisions a world in which women’s

rights

are

recognized

as

human

rights

and every woman is able to achieve her full potential. In such a world, women have access to all resources and are represented in decision-making positions on an equal basis with men. In such a world, no woman lives in fear of violence.
