Community is a word that encompasses so

many different ideals. One definition is: a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. Each one of you have helped us put “community” into the Boulder Junction Community Foundation. Through your generous donations and vote of confidence, we were able to accomplish many wonderful things this past year. Here are the highlights!

Our Restricted Endowment Fund saw donations of $51,000 which brings our total Fund in 2016 to just over $192,000. We have a solid beginning on our goal of $1 Million dollars. This fund produces interest that is, and will be, available for grants annually . . . forever. The foresight of Boulder Junction donors to invest in the future of our town in this way is truly a gift to all of us.

Our newly established Community Enhancement Fund saw a flurry of activity also this past year.

o $20,140 was donated by the family of Earl Sturm and was used to upgrade and beautify our ball field. New bleachers, a new sign and safety lines were installed. This will be enjoyed by our youth as well as adult leagues for years to come.

o $4,400 was donated through the Boulder Junction UpShift Bike Group and was used to purchase two bicycle repair stations with signage. The stations have just been installed at the waysides of both M/N and H/K Highways.

Our Restricted Endowment Fund granted $1,000 toward the Chamber’s mural project. The Foundation created an Arts & Culture Fund and was the fiduciary agent for collecting over $7,000 to cover 100% of the costs for this beautiful mural depicting life in all four (4) seasons in Boulder Junction.

$13,100 in artwork was gifted to the Foundation and we, in turn, gifted it to the town to enhance our Community Center. Please check out the conference room, outer entrance by the library and the High-Fishtrap-Rush Lakes Room.

A $200 grant was given to support Music on Main Street performances.

A $695 grant to the Children’s Summer Reading Program.

Through their wait staff stipend and tips at the Foundation’s Colorama Dinner, the 8th grade class was able to realize $1,930 toward their class trip.

Through the funds above, the Foundation gifted over $45,000 toward projects in the town of Boulder Junction in 2016 to enhance our community.

The Foundation is honored to be able to play such an integral role in Boulder Junction and looks forward to 2017 with anticipation for another great year. Thank you for your continued support of our collective future. We look forward to strengthening our relationships and our sense of community in the coming year.

Giving Back to the Community A Family Builds a Legacy

Boulder Junction has been a part of our family’s life for over 67 years. Our Mom and Dad, Earl & Evelyn Sturm, vacationed in Boulder Junction in the early 1950’s at Pinewood Lodge on Fishtrap Lake, owned by Phil and Meta Francis. We spent our summer vacations with our parents from the time we were very small at one of the cabins at the Lodge. In the early years there was no running water, indoor plumbing or electricity. We can’t imagine how challenging that was, but they loved Fishtrap Lake, the people and the beauty of the area!

Mom and Dad bought a lakefront parcel on Fishtrap when Pinewood Lodge was sold and built by scratch, their special retirement home. Our children also spent time in the summers on the lake, enjoying the Boulder Summer Parks and Recreation program, and creating special memories with Grandma and Grandpa. Our Dad served on the Town Board, was a long-time member of the Lions Club (and Mom a Lioness) and was a religious softball fanatic- playing for decades in the Boulder leagues. Many knew him as “Earl the Pearl.” Our parents refurbished a cabin on their property called “The Loons Nest”. It was our Mom’s role to promote, book the cabin, and turn it over for the next vacationer. Our Dad was the “fix it” guy. Their lives, as a newly married couple with young children and on through their senior years, were intertwined in Boulder Junction.

Our parents have both passed now, and it was our pleasure as Earl and Evelyn’s children along with their grandchildren and great grandchildren to provide a gift through the Boulder Junction Foundation, to upgrade and then name the baseball field “Sturm Memorial Field.” This legacy is so important and is imbedded in our family’s lives now. We look forward to keeping these memories and shared experiences of Boulder Junction alive and build new ones for generations to follow.

Local Organizations Make It Possible

On Your Mark, Get Set…Read Every summer, the Boulder Junction Public Library offers a Summer Reading Program for the children who live in, as well as visit our community. Last summer, readers explored all things sports and fitness with the theme, “On Your Mark, Get Set…Read!” The most exciting part of the reading program was the Reading Challenge Bike Raffle which was funded with a grant from the Boulder Junction Community Foundation. Last year's Reading Challenge held an additional incentive over previous years: even the reluctant reader

had a chance to win a bike, by reading 30 minutes or more. Encouraging and rewarding all readers - proficient or reluctant - was our goal. The Boulder Junction Community Foundation’s mission is to preserve and enhance Boulder Junction for present and future generations. The Summer Reading Program Bike Raffle fit perfectly into the Community Foundation’s mission since it encouraged and rewarded Boulder Junction’s future generation and provided children with a means to utilize our town’s bike trails. Seven children won bikes in our special bike raffle. Names were drawn from four categories: PreK-3rd grade Girls, PreK-3rd grade Boys, 4th-8th grade Girls, and 4th-8th grade Boys. A special thanks to the Boulder Junction Community Foundation for awarding the library a $695 grant to purchase the bikes and helmets. The Foundation is an integral part of our community and we are fortunate to be able to turn to them to enhance the lives of our town. – Cherie Sanderson, Director, Boulder Junction Public Library

Music and Art on Main Street In 2016, the Boulder Junction Community Foundation granted the Boulder Junction Chamber of Commerce a total of $1,200. $200 was received in support of our Music on Main Street Series. Music on Main Street was enjoyed by approximately 100-200 people each week for 6 weeks. We had a variety of local musicians perform during this summer series which 11 businesses sponsored, in addition to the Community Foundation’s grant.

A $1,000 grant was received in support of the Boulder Junction Community Mural Project. The mural was completed in late July of 2016 and is a wonderful addition to downtown Boulder Junction. This

work of art, located on the western side of the Badger Heating and Air Conditioning building on Main Street, will be enjoyed by residents and visitors for many years to come. The grant helped fund the project which totaled $5,624. The remaining funding was raised through private donations to the Mural Fund Account which the Foundation established and administered.

The Boulder Junction Chamber of Commerce truly appreciates the work and fundraising that the Boulder Junction Community Foundation is doing. Their short-term efforts are helping to add to the beauty and fun that already exists in Boulder Junction, while their long-term goals will help to protect and enhance the quality of what we all have come to enjoy in our community. Thank you BJCF! - Theresa Smith, Executive Director Boulder Junction Chamber of Commerce

Boulder Junction Community Restricted Endowment Fund

Our Finance Committee and Board have been vigilant in monitoring and reviewing the investment management services provided by the Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin in managing the Community Endowment funds that have been entrusted to them. Gary Plouff, Treasurer

The Boulder Junction Community Foundation Restricted Endowment Fund was established for the purpose of creating a fund that will generate proceeds in perpetuity to benefit the Boulder Junction community. The Foundation’s goal is to raise $1 million for the fund. The Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin manages the investment of the principal in the Restricted Endowment Fund. Upon the recommendation of the Board of Directors of the Foundation, a $200 grant was given in 2016 to the Boulder Junction Chamber of Commerce for its summer “Music on Main Street” program, a $1,000 grant was awarded to the Chamber for their Boulder Junction Community Mural Project, and the Boulder Junction Public Library was awarded a $695 grant for their summer reading program challenge. During 2016, $50,947 was contributed to the Endowment Fund, with approximately $30,947 coming directly from donors and $20,000 coming from the net proceeds of foundation special events.

For 2017, $5,900 is available for grants to nonprofit or other qualifying organizations for projects that benefit the community. Grant availability will continue to grow yearly based on the fund’s earnings.

Boulder Junction Community Enhancement Fund

The BJCF Community Center Building Fund Comes to a Close

While it is the Restricted Endowment Fund that ultimately will ensure Boulder Junction’s vitality long into the future, the Foundation established the Community Enhancement Fund for donors and project sponsors who have an interest in supporting current community projects and programs enabling them to see their financial support in action right away. In addition, the fund framework allows the Foundation to assist a donor’s philanthropic wishes by facilitating a fund for the donor’s specific wishes as long as it fits within the Foundation’s mission.

The exciting news is that the new fund took off immediately with the creation of four special project funds including the downtown mural, bike trail enhancements, a memorial fund for improvements to what is now the Sturm Memorial Ballfield, and an Arts & Culture Fund for potiential music, dance, theater programs, and more. $33,891 was generously donated to the Funds highlighted below.

During 2016, the Foundation received the last $1,400 in long term pledge donations to the Community Center Building Fund, originally established in November 2012, for the “Building Our Future Together” fundraising campaign, to offset the construction costs of the Community Center & Library Building. The Foundation formally closed the Fund, having turned over the last of the $402,432 in donations raised to the town. The Foundation is honored to have played a role with the town and all donors and volunteers who contributed to the success of the fundraising campaign.

Townwide Rummage Sale - Treasure Bazaar

2015 Annual Report

Special events allow the Foundation to raise additional funds for the Boulder Junction Community Foundation Restricted Community Endowment and supplement operating expenses (for example, in 2016, through the proceeds of the townwide rummage sale.) During 2016, the Foundation raised over $34,000 through special events with net proceeds exceeding $26,300. After retaining seed funds for 2017 events, $20,000 in special event proceeds were directed to the Community Endowment Fund.

In addition, special events benefit the community in other ways. For example, the Colorama Dinner that serves 300 diners family-style, literally ”takes a village” to put on. In doing so, new community relationships are forged and strengthened with a lot of hard work and comradery. Also, the NLS 8th graders received a stipend of $650 to supplement their dinner tips through their service and participation at the Colorama Dinner that they use for their Spring trip. Their efforts helped to raise over $1,930 for their trip.

The success of the Foundation’s special events would not be possible without the board and committee members, community service organizations, and other community volunteers who continue to donate their time and personal funds for Foundation activities. A heartfelt thank you to all contributors!
