CAREER-FOCUSED LEARNING

WHEN HUMBER STUDENTS AND FACULTY TEAM UP WITH INDUSTRY, GREAT THINGS HAPPEN.

Ooyavah Inc. is a leading Ontario business in stereoscopic technology that has developed a prototype for glasses-free 3D visualization on the Apple iPad. They had one problem, though: their technology required users to mount the lens on the iPad and then store it when not in use, all without compromising the iPad’s other functions.

To find a solution to this challenge, Humber Industrial Design professor Odin Cappello led a team of nine Humber students from a variety of programs to design and prototype a case that would house the Ooyavah lens, as well as develop a user interface, social media campaign and marketing video.

Students Abigail, Keith and Dimitri, as well as Cappello and industry partner Ihor Petelycky, are named as inventors on a pending patent for the case.

The project received funding from the Ontario Centres of Excellence and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

“Working on Ooyavah was a wonderful opportunity for students to learn and experience a real-world project,” says Dimitri.

“It wasn’t only schoolwork, but an opportunity to design something that is actually going to be produced.”

OUR MUSIC STUDENTS WORK WITH INDUSTRY LEGENDS.

Music producer Bob Ezrin has worked with Lou Reed, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Alice Cooper and K’naan – and, this year, with a group of Humber music students.

Ezrin, who produced K’naan’s song “Wavin’ Flag” in 2010, was Humber’s 2015 Producer in Residence, giving a Humber student band the opportunity to get up-close and personal during a live recording session.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for students to have an experience with a world-class producer – one who has an established career and is credible in the music industry,” says professor Ian Terry.

Fifteen students submitted songs for Ezrin to produce. He selected “Like You Do,” which was written and sung by Meagan, a student in Humber’s Bachelor of Music program.

Meagan and her band, which is made up of other music students, were given feedback as they recorded her song.

“He knows what works in the studio and wastes no time,” says Meagan. “He’s a people person who keeps the atmosphere together while having everything run smoothly and efficiently. He lifted my song to great heights along with my spirit.”

DEGREE STUDENT PROFILE

ROBYN BLACKMAN, AN INTERNATIONAL GRADUATE (2015) OF THE BACHELOR OF COMMERCE HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM MANAGEMENT PROGRAM, WAS LOOKING FOR AN OUT-OF-THE-BOX EXPERIENCE, AND STUDYING INTERNATIONALLY WAS AT THE TOP OF HER LIST.

“What made Humber stand out from other institutions were the small class sizes, which meant more one-on-one time with professors,” said Robyn. “There is also an internship component which gives you an edge in the industry.”

Robyn was grateful to be able to use credits from her fi rst two years of college in Barbados to accelerate her studies. Humber introduced Robyn to a new career path through her Global Geography and Destination Development, and Globalization and Sustainable Development courses.

“My ideal job would be to travel the world assisting countries in their development process in regards to sustainability and tourism,” said Robyn.

As a Student Ambassador working with the International Centre, she had the chance to gain valuable work experience and further develop her skills and knowledge by assisting with coordinating numerous events on campus.

Robyn, who is now pursuing her MBA in the UK offers this advice for students who are thinking about studying abroad at Humber College: “Go for it! You will not regret it.”

OUR BACHELOR OF COMMERCE DEGREES HAVE THE SAME FIRST TWO YEARS.This common platform means that you’ll build a sound understanding of general business principles for the first two years of your program, which will give you a solid foundation in the essential aspects of business – something employers value. In your final two years you can then focus on your chosen specialization. Most business programs allow you to transfer from one specialization to another if your interests change during the first two years.

WE WANT TO REWARD YOUR HARD WORK WITH SCHOLARSHIPSYou’ve worked hard to get where you are – and we want to recognize that. We offer automatic academic scholarships to newly admitted degree students entering their first year directly from high school/secondary school. Refer to page 39 for more information.

MELANIE, A FOURTH YEAR STUDENT IN THE BACHELOR OF COMMERCE DEGREE PROGRAM SPECIALIZING IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS, MADE THE DECISION TO TAKE PART IN A SEMESTER ABROAD PROGRAM IN IRELAND.

“I had always heard people say that you can’t compare anything to an international exchange and now I know exactly what they meant,” said Melanie. “I feel more aware of the world.”

Melanie’s goal had always been to work internationally and this experience allowed her to see if living abroad was something that she would want to do full time once she graduates from Humber and starts her career.

FACULT Y PROFILE

MANY STUDENTS SPEND READING WEEK SOCIALIZING, RELAXING OR STUDYING. SOME EVEN USE THE TIME TO READ.For Francisca Burg-Feret’s nursing students and others in Humber’s School of Health Sciences, reading week 2015 was an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of 240 children living at the Valle de Los Angeles orphanage as well as more remote communities in Guatemala.

Ten students from the nursing, practical nursing and early childhood education (advanced studies in special needs) programs travelled with Burg-Feret, as well as a pediatrician and a family physician, to help perform health assessments and conduct mobile clinics in small towns.

Taking students out of their comfort zones and giving them the opportunity to contribute to communities around the world is a key element in Burg-Feret’s teaching.

“Reaching out to under-resourced communities gives our students an eye-opening experience, and helps them grow in their cultural sensitivities,” says Burg-Feret, who has volunteered extensively in the area. “We’re looking to develop sustainable relationships with the people we meet, and to provide what those host communities tell us they need.”

For the students who participated in Burg-Feret’s trip, the experience was, indeed, life-changing.

“A lot of us had never met – we all had different backgrounds – but we all learned to work in sync really well,” says Daniel, a student in the practical nursing program. “This kind of trip makes you appreciate not just nursing, but life itself.”

POSTGRADUATE STUDENT PROFILE

WHEN SHRIYA LANDED IN CANADA, SHE HAD MIXED EMOTIONS. She was both happy and sad, but once she got settled in, she realized that Humber was the best place for her to be.

Shriya noticed right away that the teaching style and classroom environment at Humber was very different from her home in India. Students not only gain theoretical knowledge, but they also gain the practical knowledge required to work in the real business world.

Even though Shriya was away from friends and family, she found the support she needed on campus. Through the International Centre, Shriya made friends from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Making friends was easy during the Humber planned group activities in which Shriya participated, allowing her to visit many famous attractions.

When Shriya was asked, what she would like new international students to know about Humber? She said “At Humber, each person will have their own unique experience. I was able to fi nd hope and joy in the simplest things that I once overlooked at home. Welcome to Humber!”

“When I was selected by my program coordinator to enter the contest, I was honoured” said Lichuan. “By the time I finished building the website, I felt very satisfied and the contest results were not that important since I knew I had tried my best.”

Lichuan was grateful to her program coordinator for believing in her. “I want to say a big thank you to Humber for creating a great environment where I can learn practical skills and gain confidence!”

Lichuan came to Humber because of its great reputation for academics and for its support of international students. “Knowing that Humber respects multicultural students, I knew I would feel safe and welcomed, which is important to any international student,” said Lichuan.

Now almost finished her program, Lichuan believes that web design is an essential platform for transferring information to users. She has big goals for the future and hopes to use her skills to benefit others.

“I WANT TO CREATE WEB APPLICATIONS WHICH HELP PEOPLE SOLVE THEIR PROBLEMS WHILE CHALLENGING MYSELF. I BELIEVE THAT I AM ON MY WAY TO ACHIEVING THIS DREAM.”
