Dear Future GREEN Student,

You are going to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. It sounds unbelievablycorny, I know, but it is the absolute truth. The week I just experienced issomething that I cannot really put into words but I will try my best. The way Isee it the trip and my experiences can be broken into 3 main categories. Thefirst is academic. No matter what your major is, you are in this programbecause you care about sustainability and that field is going to be so much moreaccessible to you after this trip. You are going to learn the hows, whys, andwhy nots, and you will speak knowledgeably about it. It's impossible to say whatyou will do with that knowledge but knowledge is power and this program putsincredible power in your hands that will allow you to make important changes inthe world.

The second category is adventure. You will do more on this program than youcan possibly imagine. Even after reading the itinerary extensively I was notprepared for the experiences simply because they were too amazing to imagine.I hiked in a blizzard, bathed in a hot spring in the middle of winter, climbedbehind massive waterfalls, and drove in a super jeep across a glacial valley. Bethey big or small the week is filled with countless adventures that will make youfeel alive. My advice to you is to embrace every single one of them with openarms. Even if you are uncomfortable or nervous go for it. Trying new thingsand getting out of your comfort zone offer the best experiences and memoriesin life.

The last category is relationships. I met 18 complete strangers on the first dayand am leaving with 18 wonderful friends. Put yourself out there, embrace eachindividual and share your experiences. Life is best when it is shared and youwill meet incredible people to share this part of your life with.

Make every second count.

Best,Erin GlockePenn State UniversityIceland Spring 2015 Alumna

About us Our Philosophy & Partners

thegreenprogram.com/apply GO 2

The GREEN Program unlocks doors for students togain exclusive education, industry access, andauthentic bucket-list experiences around the world. We exist to use the world as our classroom in orderto give meaning and purpose to education, adventure, and life.

Founded in 2009, we created one of the first-everstudy abroad experiences catered to the not-so-average student who is seeking that no-so-averageexperience that provides something more. Ourprogram attracts students who are curious aboutthe world and seek opportunities to adventure, break out of their comfort zone, and stand outamong their peers as a global citizens. Whatevertheir ambition might be, our participants have oneunderlying mission in common: they haveconsciously chosen to pursue a future of possibilities andare determined to be part of the solutions toward a betterworld.

With The GREEN Program, we don't want studentsto choose between a job, an internship, or a studyabroad experience. In fact, we want them to do itall. We help students maximize their winter, springand summer breaks in order to allow them to get afulfilling study abroad experience within just 8-10days. All the while, students are able to have thatawesome internship they've had their eye on orthose remaining summer classes they need tosqueeze in to make sure they graduate on time.

We live in a time where opportunities are endless,so why limit ourselves?

Director of Iceland School of EnergyThe CourseThe GREEN Program at Iceland School of Energy

The GREEN Program has worked in collaboration with ReykjavikUniversity's Iceland School of Energy to develop a 50 plus hour intensivecourse worth 3ECTS/1.5 U.S. credits. Through the course, our programfaculty and industry experts teach classes on sustainability, hydropower, geology, bio fuels, and geothermal energy. These lectures arecomplemented by various facility tours including hydropower plants, geothermal facilities and bio fuel innovation. During the course studentsalso form interdisciplinary groups and develop a final Capstone Projecton a specific renewable energy subject that they present to fellowstudents and professors upon the course's culmination. Each group isrequired to present a project highlighting an identified problem andsolution and they must also detail the financial, political, education, engineering and social impact aspects of their innovative idea.

Iceland School of Energy is Reykjavik University's MSc program andaccredited by Reykjavik University's School of Science and Engineering. The program brings together Reykjavik University, Iceland GeoSurvey, and Reykjavik Energy to offer unique opportunities for students to studysustainable energy in close cooperation with leaders in the field. TheGREEN Program is proud to support their mission to provide each newgeneration with trained experts in the field of clean energy for asustainable world.

As part of The GREEN Program, each student is required to choose anddevelop an independent project related to renewable energy, publicpolicy, business, environmental science, ecology, and more. Each studentwill work in interdisciplinary groups to collaborate on this CapstoneProject.

The project must address a current issue that can be solved or improvedthrough the application of renewable energy policy, technology, business, sustainable ecology, and environmental policy.

The Capstone Project inspires and motivates students to think outside ofthe box and implement their newfound knowledge while creatinginnovations of tomorrow. A number of student projects have beenpresented as proposals and are currently in their beginning stages ofimplementation. Several projects have gained university funding andgrants upon return to the students’ home institution(s).
