#GoCavSGoSTORYLINES – VS ELIZABETH CITY STATE UNIVERSITY For the third consecutive year, the Cavaliers will open up their season by taking on the Vikings of Elizabeth City State. It is the second-straight year UVa-Wise is participating in West Virginia State’s Earl Lloyd Classic tournament as a cross-conference challenge to begin the season. In 2014, UVa-Wise defeated the Vikings 108-106 in double overtime but Elizabeth City State got the better of the Cavs last season and earned a four-point 73-69 victory. In that game a year ago, UVa-Wise shot just 33.9 percent from the field including going 4-for-21 (.19) from beyond the arc, despite hitting 27-of-29 free throws (.931). On the contrary, ECSU shot 41.8 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from downtown (6-of-14). The Vikings went 9-15 in 2015-16 and posted a 6-10 record in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, falling to Fayetteville State 69-39 in the opening round of the CIAA Tournament. This season, ECSU will be without the services of key players DeCarlos Anderson, Miykael Faulcon and Stephen Asihene. Anderson and Faulcon accounted for a combined 31.7 points per game last year, which was about 46 percent of the Vikings’ scoring. However, the Vikings do return three starters from a year ago in 5-foot-7 senior guard Clayton Cowell, 6-foot-6 senior forward Matthew McIntosh and 6-foot-6 senior forward Jermaine Brown. Clayton led ECSU in assists last season (80) and averaged 6.9 points per game, while Brown posted 5.2 rebounds per game and McIntosh averaged 5.9 points per game off of 47.3 percent shooting. The Vikings were picked to finish 11th in the CIAA this year with 23 total points, finishing ahead of Lincoln (Pa.) and behind Chowan University and Livingstone College in the preseason poll.

ABOUT UVA-WISEUVa-Wise is looking to begin the 2016-17 season on a high note after going 4-25 overall and 2-20 in Mountain East Confer-ence play last year. The Cavs will have to do so without forward Matt Day, who averaged a double-double of 22.7 ppg and 10.6 rpg and accounted for nearly 30 percent of the Cavs’ scoring last season as a senior. Picked to finish last in the MEC, UVa-Wise is eager to prove their preseason ranking wrong. The Cavs return just two starters and a total of five letter winners from a year ago, but welcome seven newcomers to the roster in addition to bringing back two players who redshirted last season. One of the starters returning for the Cavs is 6-foot-6 redshirt sophomore forward Dimitri Sousa (São Paulo, Brazil), who averaged the second-most points per game (14.9) and was second on the team in rebounds per game (4.9) in 2015-16. Sousa’s 49.3 field-goal percentage was a UVa-Wise best among players who attempted more than 25 shots.

HEAD COACH BLAKE MELLINGERFourth Season

Blake Mellinger enters his fourth year at the helm of the UVa-Wise men’s basket-ball program for the 2016-17 season. After guiding his team as full NCAA Division II members last season for the first time in his career, Mellinger looks to improve upon a 2015-16 campaign that saw the Cavaliers play one of the toughest sched-ules in the nation.

Highlighted by a 100-87 home win over rival and 14th-ranked King University on Dec. 20, 2015, where the Cavs made a school-record 18 three-pointers, Mellinger coached senior forward Matt Day to one of the best single seasons in UVa-Wise his-tory.

Mellinger developed Day into one of the best forwards in the Mountain East Con-ference between his junior and senior seasons, helping the Buckhorn, Kentucky, native nearly double his scoring average and improve his rebounding average by 4.3 per game. In his final season as a Cav, Day scored an impressive 658 points and

grabbed 307 rebounds to launch himself into sixth place on UVa-Wise’s all-time scoring list and earn All-MEC Second Team honors. He also set three UVa-Wise and MEC single-game records when he scored 49 points and made 24 of 27 free throws in a 102-89 home win against West Virginia State on Feb. 25, 2016. Before being named head coach, Mellinger spent six seasons as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator for UVa-Wise. Over that time period he spearheaded the recruiting efforts for the Cavs, and assisted in leading the program to its second Appalachian Athletics Conference championship and an NAIA National Tournament appearance in 2010. In addition to his recruiting responsibilities, Mellinger was responsible for developing game plans and strategies, on floor coaching, scheduling, team travel, day-to-day operations, monitoring team compliance and academics, scouting opponents, individual player development, setting up community service projects, and assisting in the coordination of team camp. Mellinger is no stranger to the game of basketball as his father and grandfather were both coaches, making him a third generation coach in the Mellinger family. A native of Glade Spring, Virginia, Mellinger was a three-sport athlete at Patrick Henry High School, lettering in basketball, football and track and field. After completing his career at Patrick Henry, Mellinger accepted an offer to play at fellow NCAA Division II Limestone College in Gaffney, South Carolina, where he played for Coach Larry Epperly from 2001-2003. He then transferred to UVa-Wise and played for Coach Lee Clark from 2003-2005. Blake served as team captain for the Cavs and went on to become an all-conference player as a senior. Mellinger received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from UVa-Wise in 2006. He and his wife Amy gave birth to their second child, Mckenna, last January and have a son named Mason. The head coach and his family reside in Wise.

Assistant Coach Drew Absher

Third Season

Drew Absher is in his third season at the College where he also serves as head coach for women’s golf. Last season Absher helped guide the Cavaliers through the program’s first year as full NCAA Division II members, in which UVa-Wise played one of the toughest schedules in the nation.

Highlighted by a 100-87 home win over rival and 14th-ranked King University on Dec. 20, 2015, where the Cavs made a school-record 18 three-pointers, Absher helped coach senior forward Matt Day to one of the best single seasons in UVa-Wise history.

Absher came to UVa-Wise after a four-year basketball career at Virginia Military Institute. While at VMI, he aided the Keydets to the All-Military Classic title and an appearance in the CIT Final Four during his collegiate career.

Prior to attending VMI, Absher was a four-year letter winner in golf and basketball at Davie County High School in Mocksville, North Carolina. He also was a member of the golf team at The Gunnery in Washington, Connecticut, during his post-graduate year. Drew’s younger brother, Davis, was added to the men’s bas-ketball coaching staff in September of 2016.

First Season

Head coach Blake Mellinger and the UVa-Wise men’s basketball program an-nounced the addition of Davis Absher to the Cavaliers’ staff for the 2016-17 season in September. Absher, who is the brother of fellow men’s basketball assistant coach and women’s golf head coach Drew Absher, serves as an assistant coach for the team.

A recent graduate of NCAA Division III member Averett University in Danville, Virginia, Absher came to the College after serving as a basketball camp coach in the summer of 2016 at both Duke University and UVa-Wise. Hailing from Mocks-ville, North Carolina, Absher was a member of the Averett Cougars basketball team where he helped the team to the 2015 USA South Athletic Conference regular sea-son title in 2015. Absher also aided the team in claiming USA South Sportsmanship and Team Service Awards during his four years at Averett. His senior year, Absher was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was invited to join the National Society of Leadership Success.

Off the court, Absher has been involved with several community service projects including volunteering his time at Special Olympics, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and Goodwill. Davis was a four-year letter winner at Davie County High School in North Carolina where he was team captain as a senior and named CPC All-Conference. Absher helped lead Davie County H.S. to a 4A Midwest Sectional championship in addition to a 4A Final Four appearance.
