The Gospel JubilatorsFriday, November 10 at 7:30 p.m. - Orringer Auditorium

Using “only the instruments God gave them,” the Gospel Jubilators have kept the Jubilee tradition alive and well in North Carolina for over 40 years. Although Jubilee singing may have peaked in popularity in the 1930s and 1940s, the Jubilator’s founder William P. Conner rejuvenated the style in 1972 when he founded the ensemble as a response to the growing commercialization of gospel music.

The Gospel Jubilators now consist of the second generation of performers faithful to the Jubilee tradition set by Daniel Massenburg. They are Don Adair, Frederick Tyson, Fulton Waddell, Robert Sherrill and Harry Leak, and they now carry the torch of the Jubilee tradition. This all-male vocal group performs acappella music with rare purity and soul, highlighting vocal traditions of the golden age of ‘30s and ‘40s gospel.

Feeding off the energy of Holiness congregations, historically these groups worked to turn out performances that were powerful, swinging and divinely inspired, and by the 1930s and ‘40s, jubilee quartet singing was arguably the most popular form of black gospel music in America. Many gospel devotees, including the members of the Jubilators, consider the jubilee years to be a golden era of gospel music.

2018Molasses CreekSaturday, January 27 at 7:30 p.m. - Orringer Auditorium

Back by popular demand, Ocracoke Island’s own Molasses Creek returns to the Explorations series this January. As phenomenal songwriters and interpreters of song, Molasses Creek concerts run the gamut from traditional to contemporary acoustic folk, from sweet ballads with ensnaring vocal harmonies to truly hot instrumentals.

Since their last Craven CC visit in 2013, band regulars Fiddler Dave Tweedie, Gary Mitchell and Gerald Hampton have been joined by Kim France. Kim’s captivating command of the bass, beautiful harmonies and lead vocals, organically blend with Dave, Gary and Gerald, and create a spark for the next generation of Molasses Creek.

The band performs frequently throughout the eastern seaboard and New England, and as far west as Oklahoma and New Mexico. They own and operate Deepwater Theater on Ocracoke, performing and hosting shows there and touring off the island extensively October-May. Their 14 recordings have received airplay around the world, including releases in 2012 and 2014 reaching the top 5 in the National Folk Charts. They have won awards on “A Prairie Home Companion” and have also received a nomination for European Country Music Association Band of the Year.

The spectacular sculptures and paintings of Michelangelo seem so familiar to us, but what do we really know about this Renaissance genius? Who was this ambitious and passionate man?

Spanning his 89 years, Michelangelo – Love and Death, takes a cinematic journey from the print and drawing rooms of Europe, through the great chapels and museums of Florence, Rome and the Vatican to explore the tempestuous life of Michelangelo. We go in search of a greater understanding of this most charismatic figure, his relationship with his contemporaries and his valuable artistic legacy. Through expert commentary and Michelangelo’s own words, this film takes a fresh look at an enigmatic man whose life is celebrated in every mark and every stroke he made.

A virtuoso craftsman, Michelangelo’s artistry is evident in everything he touched. Beautiful and diverse works such as the towering statue of David, the deeply moving Pietà in the Papal Basilica of St. Peter and his tour-de-force, the Sistine Chapel ceiling, still leave us breathless today.

A giant artistic force and universally loved, discover why Michelangelo is without a doubt one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance – and perhaps of all time.

USA Adventures and International Travel Registration deposits, fees and final payments for out-of-state or out-of-country travel where the LLC contracts with a tour company will follow a payment schedule specific to each trip. Many of the payments for these trips are paid directly to one of our group travel partners. Rules for refunds and the specific details for each trip will be posted on our website.

Please note that Craven Community College requires that each person participating in an extended trip must sign a liability waiver and purchase cancellation and post-departure emergency insurance. We offer a reasonably priced option with each trip that we sponsor. Participants who have other travel insurance coverage may opt-out of our offer, but they are required to provide Craven Community College with proof of insurance that specifically documents insurance coverage equivalent to our minimum standards.

Refund PolicyTickets purchased for Explorations in The ARTS events or our Performance Day Trips are not refundable. However, the tickets or registrations are transferable. If you are unable to attend an event that you have registered and paid for, you are welcome to share your tickets or transfer the registration to another person.

One-to three-day trip registration fees are not refundable. These are the only exceptions: 1) the predetermined minimum enrollment is not met, and the trip is canceled due to low enrollment; or 2) the college, or the performance, or exhibit venue determines that due to threatening weather or unsafe conditions we must cancel a trip or performance. No refunds will be offered if a new date is selected and the program is completed as advertised.

There are no refunds offered after an event has occurred. A refund of fees to a registered participant will only occur when a cancellation is made in advance of the event AND a replacement from the waiting list registers for the open spot. We understand that “life happens,” so please contact us as soon as possible if last-minute circumstances arise. We often have an extensive waiting list for each day trip and we will attempt to fill a spot if we are notified.

Online registration, tickets and additional information are all available through our website:

About the Adult Enrichment ProgramDiscover, Learn and Grow!

The Adult Enrichment Program is designed to provide a wide array of affordable non-credit, non-graded classes for adults to increase their knowledge, explore new interests and offer opportunities to make social connections with people of similar life experiences and interests. Fun, not performance.

Classes are taught in a relaxed atmosphere. They may be offered as a one-day workshop or a series of weekly meetings, with a maximum of eight weeks. Classes in nine categories are offered at various times throughout the year:

• Arts• Crafts• Music & Language• Recreation & Wellness• Kitchen & Cuisine• Home & Garden• Money Matters• Enrichment & Special Interest• Technical & Devices

Daytime and evening classes, based on community input, are held in New Bern and Havelock on the Craven Community College campuses and in community locations. Fees vary based on class duration and materials and may require a minimum enrollment of students which will be included with the class listing on this website.

In choosing a class, you can be practical, serious, find new passions or just fill in a knowledge gap. With as many as 50+ classes offered in the fall, winter and spring, and hundreds of students participating, this program is bound to offer a class that is right for you!

Anyone who has suggestions for future courses or is interested in teaching a class, should go to cravencc.edu/aep/suggest-an-adult-enrichment-class/ and submit their ideas through the online form.
